Oh, South Loop...I forgot how you have hidden classy gems in your hood now. If I hadn't seen the valet sign for M Lounge, I would've driven right by! I felt like I was in Manhattan when I walked in - Dark, with candles on every table, ottomans and leather seats...Forget the fratastic crowds in LP/LV, this place has 'sophisticated' and 'mature' written all over it. There's music, but it's low enough that you can have convos with your friends (and be able to HEAR them!). What a welcomed change of pace for a Friday night. Drinks were pretty reasonable, too. ($6 for a gin and tonic, $5 for a Miller) And, parking is a little difficult, but you can always find an open meter on Wabash if you circle around for a bit. read more

I'm guessing that the "M" stands for the initial of owner Reggie's last name, but for me this is the "Magnificent Lounge." It's one of the best bars in the city, and it's only a few blocks away from me. Reggie is the root of the experience here. He's been "in the house" almost every time I've been here, and he truly cares about making sure his guests have a good time, and he's thoughtful about how he can improve their experience in the future. In fact, he once followed a friend and me out the door to ask us about our experience, what we liked and what could use improvement. Wow! I love when owners of restaurants & bars greet the tables, but this went well beyond that. Trilion is equally hospitable behind the bar, suggesting and crafting high-quality cocktails. While M Lounge doesn't serve food (they would do well to at least sell some munchies such as fancy nuts, like The Whistler), they welcome you to order in. I've been here when it's busy, and the energy is overwhelmingly positive and energetic. But I prefer to come early in the evening, before dinner, or on a weeknight, especially a Tuesday or Wednesday when they have live music. It's free! And the music is goo--ood. For such a small place, I'm surprised at the quality. The talent must really like Reggie and the room. Most recently, I saw Tracye Eileen, and her sultry voice made me fall in love with her at first sound. She rocked, romanced and soothed the room with her R&B and jazz, both up-tempo and ballads. A great voice accompanied by a muy tight band. I also like that the clientele is diverse, like is the South Loop (at least by Chicago standards). While M Lounge is most-frequented by African Americans, those of us with lower levels of melanin are warmly welcomed and equally taken care of. My friend suggested this spot after we departed the Yelp holiday soiree. I had heard of it before, but had never made any effort to try it out. Seeing as I was already floating with a decent amount of drinks, one more seemed like a great plan. From the street, it doesn't look like much. Actually, you may even wonder if they might have left off "S &" before the M when you first walk up. In my mind, "Am I remembering this correctly to be what I read about?" I had some brief reservations as I recalled the fact ou can never really know a person - 'a person' being my friend who suggested the place - until I got right up on the door and could see how nice it was inside. Relieved and impressed, I entered this contemporary posh venue. It's dripping with a classy atmosphere that isn't too full of itself. I really liked the interior decor. My friend had also suggested the Yummy Bear martini here, which I just had to try. The drink... was more like Tasteless Bear. There was really no flavor to it outside of the three skewered gummi bears garnish. Have you ever gotten a gift that was in a big box, only to open it to see it's something like a pair of slippers? That's how I felt. Jaded. My same friend assured me the drink had been excellent her last visit and it was even the same bartender. She got the same thing I did and agreed this time around they weren't up to par. All 4 of us in the party felt all our drinks lacked any merit. The $6 margarita I had in Chinatown the week prior was better than this lackluster $11 cocktail. Jaded, I was, but not ready to totally count M Lounge out. It really is a nice spot and I was happy with the music. I'm willing to give them another go to see if their drinks can bring it like their atmosphere and interior does. read more

I had never Heard of this Little Swanky Spot until my Luv took me here before my surgery (sort of a last drink up cause Saturday you're down for a while) .. The seating was cozy from sofas to the chairs. the bar area was nice to hang out as well. The music was Fantastic! the Ambiance was amazing and the drinks were pretty decent. About $70 for about 10 drinks was pretty nice. The jazz band playing that night was Greymatter and I absolutely LOVED them!! I will certainly ggo back here again ! read more

I've been going to M lounge for years, and it is now a South Loop staple. It's a very intimate space, but has cosy seating, dim lights, and a little background music, making it a great spot for a date. The layout and seating also makes it a great spot for groups. They don't serve food, but they do allow people to order delivery from area restaurants. The service here is always exceptional, even when they're super busy, and the drinks are always well made. I haven't been there for a while, the last time I was there it was really crowded and they were at capacity, but everytime I am there, I have a great time. I've been to M Lounge semi frequently over the years and I've always enjoyed the ambiance and service. The drinks are hit or miss in my opinion but generally they are okay. My favorite drinks are the fruit fusion cocktail and the x-rated fusion drink. The best thing about M Lounge has got to be the live music. I've seen some of the best bands there. The last time I visited there was an R&B band called Delivery Point playing. They were amazing and I really enjoyed their set. It was almost a crime that there was no cover charge to see them. However, this past Sunday afternoon, we stopped in for the JoAnn Fastoff Book Signing of Two Years of Heaven at M Lounge. M Lounge is one of those uber-cool bars that makes you feel like maybe you should have reconsidered your outfit before venturing out. The vibe here is relaxed-trendy. Look around, this isn't a sports bar. This is the true definition of a lounge; drink and enjoy the company of who is joining you. M Lounge is really small which only adds to the good vibes. It sort of has a private lounge/club feel to it. M Lounge was more of an upscale watering hole for locals than an upscale swanky cocktail lounge. The real stars of this place are the Martinis. I'm very happy that M Lounge has arrived in the South Loop. It's a quiet, intimate lounge bar with extremely attentive staff. Upon my first visit, we were shown to a group of couches by a very helpful man, who came by to check on us several times and even offered us a complimentary tasting of whiskey. At the end of the evening, he provided us each with a voucher for $10 off our next visit, which I gladly used when I returned on a Wednesday night for an evening of jazz. If you do come for the jazz, which is offered twice a week on Tuesdays and Wednesdays starting at 7:00 p.m., you won't be disappointed. The musicians were quite talented, and it's so refreshing to be able to sit and listen to live music rather than finding yourself surrounded by 10 television screens, all featuring a different sporting event. I'm not wild about the decor - M Lounge feels a bit more like a hotel or airport lounge than a serious bar - and the space is a bit cramped, but M Lounge is a welcome addition to the neighborhood. read more

M Lounge looks small and nondescript from the outside so I'd walked by it a bunch of times before a friend suggested we go in for a drink. It's beautiful inside with comfortable seating arranged so that you can relax, hang out with friends and catch some good music. It's great to find a place that supports so much local talent. Sitting down for a nice drink and some good live music makes for a great night out. The drink menu is extensive with options for a variety of tastes. I think it's worth highlighting that they also have a pretty good selection of non-alcoholic beverages to choose from that are no less tasty and fancy than their standard cocktails. It can get pretty loud, even during the week but its more the buzz of groups of people having a nice time out than anything else. The only bad experience I have had here was one night when I was in with friends and we were aggressively harassed by a guy who said he was a regular customer. We mentioned this to the bartender who said he was going to cut him off but the guy kept coming over to our table and bothering us. read more

I went here on a Saturday night recently with some girlfriends. The staff was extremely nice, although part of that may have been because my friend frequents the bar and is a regular there. When we arrived, we were shown to a nice loungy area at the front of the lounge to enjoy our drinks. The martini I had was amazing! I think I had the raspberry lemon drop martini. Hands down one of the best martinis I have had in Chicago. My friends all had really good martinis too. One friends martini came with a gummy bear in it...yum. I loved the ambiance of this place. It felt laid back and chill, and felt like you were hanging with business and professional people. The night my friends and I were there, there was a DJ playing music. I also believe it was the DJ's birthday, and so they passed out free cupcakes. There also was a liquor company there passing out shots and promoting their liquor. Needless to say, my girlfriends and I had a nice chill, laid back time here at M lounge. I will definitely be going back for more fabulous martinis and to experience one of their jazz music nights that I believe they have. read more

Friday afternoon at Target, I get the phone call, "it's been a rough week and I need a drink" I hop on yelp and look for bars nearby and M Lounge pops up. At this point, expectations are very low. First the atmosphere is perfectly low key. There were couples in the seats but some singles in the mix too and the bartender is absolutely amazing. First drink was the Tiramisu martini complete with a shot of espresso. Right on time since i missed my evening cup of coffee and delicious. The rest of the night was filled with the Nut Case, which was described to me perfectly as tasting just like melted ice cream (but cold) once my friend got there, she had the raspberry lemon drop which was also delicious. We also ordered some takeout from nearby which, I think, is genius. Just ask for the book of menus and you can get pretty much whatever you want. Suffice it to say that at many points during the night we looked at each other and said, "yeah this might be a new spot" and left for home knowing it would. I'll be back soon for sure. read more

Classy place! I was in town for business and I wanted a Chicago vibe for an hour or two. I was the only white person there, so that's how I knew my experience would be pure. Very warm and friendly service. I loved how you could order-in food as long as you order drinks. The live music was just the right volume. This is going to come down to what you are going for. If it's a jazz performance, then it's a real good spot to go to. It's not nearly as crowded as some of it's after work mixers so you'll be able to find a seat. After work though, it can be a little crowded and the bartenders can be a little slow. M Lounge is one of those rare places where you won't feel forced to shut up and listen to music (due to venue layout, an exorbitant cover charge, etc). That said, the vibes and talent here will definitely make you want to groove along by your own volition. The drinks can be a little hit or miss (depending on your tastes, I suppose), but the quality of the musicians makes everything worthwhile. It definitely fills up, so go early if you're going with a sizeable group. Aside from the bar stools, there are ottomans and lounge chairs placed around small tables. Me likey the M Lounge. Used to live in the building where it's located, but moved right before they opened. Fast forward four years and a couple blocks east... I'm just now getting over there after hearing much buzz about the place. Seems to be the grown 'n sexy spot to be. Very cozy, long stretch of a space with an intimate atmosphere. I gotta give props to the bartender who, unlike most, made me the perfect mojito from scratch. Side note: Down with the mojito mix in a big kool aid glass! If you can't be authentic, take it off the menu! Was kinda surprised to see that the crowd wasn't more diverse, but maybe it depends on which night you go. I'm not complaining though, 'cuz there was no cover and alas, no pretention. People came in waves so the crowd would thin out and thicken up again. I went on a Thursday so there was a DJ spinning soul and a lil bit 'o Latin. Keep an eye out for the Artists' Circle (see www.pureartistry.org.) that has events there monthly. It's a great networking opportunity for people involved in the performing arts. Parking can be a doozy but there are meters on surrounding streets. I absolutely love this place. It's very close to me, so it's a frequent after-dinner spot to bring friends. During so many trips, I've tried most of the martinis on the menu (either myself or trying someone's in my group) and I have to say they are unbelievably consistent in quality regardless of which one you get. Trillan is a master at mixology and insanely friendly. You can also get food delivered there since they don't have a kitchen. I love going to M Lounge. The place is intimate and great to go on a date to listen to live jazz. One thing that I enjoy is the fact that you can bring in your own food. BYOF is the way to go for a small lounge. Its upscale and Reggie the owner really tries to ensure his guest enjoy their experience. Last year, we held a SITC party there. The ladies loved the service and of course loved the party. We had a wonderful time. Reggie ensured that the place was shutdown for us. In addition, they allowed us to pipe in our own music for the occasion. If you have out of town guests, this is a great spot in the So-Loop that your people will enjoy. This new martini lounge is quickly becoming one of my favorite in the south loop. It's very close to some good restaurants (think Firehouse, Opera, Cuatro) so it's the perfect way to end the night. The drinks veer toward the sweet, but the bartender is always willing to try something new out on you. Ask for his recommendation, and you might end up with a new concoction that you can spend the rest of the evening trying to name. The music and the clientele are both jazzy and urban cool. One word summation: Chill. The only con is that the place is intimate (read: tiny) and fills up fast on the weekends. read more

So I was bar-hopping/lounge hopping and decided to try this hidden gem. I was a bit skeptical when I hopped in the cab from downtown and asked him to take me to 'said address'. Can you say sketch and nervous all at once? Even the cab driver didn't know where it was. I pulled up and asked the cab driver NOT to leave because I was not sure it was open. I saw it was open and decided to take a chance. I was sooo glad I did. This place is cozy and supposedly known for its martinis. The vibe was nice, the crowd was good without the pretentiousness.
