My family has been using Lyons & Sons Plumbing since the 1970s. They have always been reliable, offered fair rates on their work, and friendly. Just this week, I had a number of plumbing repairs that needed to be done in my home, including diagnosing a leak in my master bath shower. I was surprised that they were able to schedule an appointment for the next day (most contractors are so busy these days). They arrived within the time frame given, and Mark was very thorough in the work he did. He needed to purchase a couple parts to finish the repairs, and was able to come out the following day, again, within the time frame given, and finish the repairs. We contacted Lyons 2 days before we needed our kitchen plumbing (sink/faucet/garbage disposal) reconnected after new countertops/sink would be installed. We noticed that a leaky faucet in an upstairs tub was leading to watermarks on our kitchen ceiling and were able to guess there was an issue with the cartridge in the faucet. After watching a few YouTube videos about DIY cartridge replacement, had a gut feeling I should reach out to a professional. Made a request on Sunday and had Mark out to take a look at the issue Tuesday morning. It turned out to be a great call as the cartridge, which might've never been replaced before, broke off when trying to pull it out. Luckily, Mark was unphased and went above and beyond to clear it out and get the cartridge replaced, leaving everything better than when we got the house, in under an hour. I have been calling 4-5 plumbers to fix our problem at my mom's condominium, but no one could expedited an appointment. When I called Dan, with all the explanation of not having hot water with zero water pressure at both of our showers -less than 24 hours, he gave me an appointment, even though they were super busy. We've had two separate (but related) service visits from Lyons, and neither were great. The first was a plumbing inspection. We just bought this old house and knew there were problems but wanted to make sure we knew everything. I was surprised when Mark arrived and was gone again within 15 minutes. We paid $275 and only had my own notes (I was scrambling to write down what he said and make sense of it) to show for it. I felt a little cheated, so after sitting down with my husband and trying (and failing) to make sense of my notes and figure out next steps, I called up Lyons and talked to Dan. After some back and forth that evening (including a Facetime call), we discovered that Mark was wrong about what he had told us about our water heater. Other stuff made more sense after we talked to Dan. (Dan also told us that apparently Mark had thought our water heater needed to be worked on ASAP because it was pretty unsafe... but Mark failed to convey that urgency to us during the inspection.) After getting so much attention from Dan, we decided to give them another chance (they have such good reviews!), so we hired them (got Mark again) to actually come do things: install a Flo by Moen water shutoff system, cap a gas line, and replace a volumetric thermostatic cartridge - Mark is the one who told us that we needed a new cartridge to fix an issue we were having with our shower. So Mark arrived and did the first two things, then said he couldn't do the third that visit because he didn't have the part. That was annoying because he's the one who told us what we needed (and we had repeated it back to Lyons when we made the second appointment), so why didn't he come prepared with it? In fact, Dan had told us when we talked to him that they have all those parts on the trucks (I remember him talking about how much $$$$ worth of equipment they have on their trucks). So Mark came back a third time, with the cartridge, and installed it. We checked it out and the problem was still there - just as before. The cartridge hadn't been the problem at all. Mark asked me to describe the problem again. I described it (for what was the third time at least, the first being Mark's initial visit and the second being when we made the appointment for the second visit). He said "ok, well then the cartridge wasn't the problem - but you needed a new one anyway because yours was old and didn't turn smoothly." (Note: We had expressed zero concern about how smoothly it turned.) It turns out that the real problem (something about the cold water not actually being delivered to the faucet) was an easy fix, requiring no new parts. But we paid Lyons $265 dollars to replace the cartridge anyway. I can't tell you how much was labor and how much was the actual cartridge (their invoices are not very specific), but either way, we didn't need it. Mark is a really nice guy and it's taken me over a month to finally write this review because of that. But I find myself still annoyed by all this over a month later, and the fact is that we will NOT be calling Lyons again. read more

One of my toilets was clogged - plunging wasn't working, chemicals didn't work, so after a Yelp search, I called Lyons. My original appointment for Saturday had to be rescheduled because their truck was in the shop and repairs were taking longer than expected. I was told that they would be at my house by early afternoon, Sunday. While they didn't show up until about 4, they were very apologetic. And Kevin is just hilarious! They were finished in about 15 minutes and Kevin even took the time to clean up any mess and make sure that everything was tidy when he finished. In all honesty and being fair, I would have taken off one star because they were late, but they were so very friendly and efficient, that I gave them the star back. I would recommend Lyons to anyone looking for plumbing service. I hope I don't have a need to call them again - no one likes to deal with home repairs/expenses, but if I do, I will call Lyons. read more

We did not have a good experience with Lyon's plumbing. We formerly were satisfied with their service, but unfortunately the trust we had in them was broken after this visit. For a simple issue we were charged a huge fee, and when we discussed it with them they basically talked down (otherwise known as "mansplaining") to us for 15 minutes until we relented - they simply weren't open to listening, and resolving - just giving a lecture about how expensive it is for them to run their business, and how it was our fault we should have known that it was a simple problem that could have been solved with double checking a valve. We simply gave up the discussion as we eventually felt sorry for them, and felt they must badly need the money in order to treat customers that way. We hope the money we paid them helps them and their business since evidently they have to fight for every penny. As a former business owner ourselves, we can spot a desperate soul who doesn't have a handle on their expenses and good customer service. We won't be returning for their services again. UPDATE: In response to the comment, we did not ask for the service to be free, and yes, the plumber did come and turn the valve on the toilet and left, for $225. That is 100% accurate. They will charge you $225 to come to your home. We didn't ask for it for free - we said we were happy to pay a rate for the 5 minutes the plumber came, walked up the stairs, turned the valve, and left. read more

They have been around this area for a long time, so they know the ins-and-outs of the plumbing in the various houses. They are also respected by WSSC, and this came in handy when tree roots were clogging our sewer line beyone the limits of our property. Excellent!! Steve is the best!! Magnolia Plumbing came out the day before with an estimate of $2000 to replace 3 valves. I called Stephen that afternoon & he came the next morning. Said the replacement was totally unnecessary. Leak was only in one valve, and that could be repaired - no replacement. Stephen successfully repaired the valve - took 10 minutes. He also diagnosed an issue with our leaking dishwasher. Until I can get an appliance repairman out, Stephen capped the garbage disposal so we can use the kitchen sink. And he diagnosed an issue with our shower faucets. Told me how to order warranty parts - and then he can fix. All this took less than 1 hour! Cost $175 - not $2000. read more

I retained Steve Lyons a year ago to fix my water heater. He got good reviews online, and he seemed nice on the phone. Unfortunately, he misdiagnosed the problem and I spent over $600 (which was double his estimate) for nothing. His pleasant demeanor quickly faded when I questioned the bill and the quality of the repair. He also advised me to go online and research possible pipe configurations and different check valves that could solve the problem my water heater was having. Isn't that the plumber's job?!?! During the initial phone call Dan asked a few basic questions to understand the issue and scheduling was done in matter of minutes. Mark arrived a few minutes ahead of schedule. I had an issue with cold water pressure with the basement shower faucet. The hot water side was just fine. Mark checked the cartridge and found that there was no issue there. There were no obvious answers. This is typically where most people give up or look for excuses. He methodically checked water pressure at various points in the cold water line (sink faucets, toilet inlet etc.) and narrowed his examination to a small section of the piping and made a couple of strategic cuts. Lo and behold we saw that stuck near the T section of the piping was a small plastic ball. While we could not determine where that obstruction came from, removing it completely fixed the problem. Efficient work done systematically and professionally is what you get with Lyons Plumbing. Recommend without reservations. read more
