The area is beautiful, not sure If I came late in the season (9/26) but the trees were mostly empty, and you have to walk a lot to get to some trees with actual apples that you can pick, as you can see in the attached pictures most the apples are high up out of reach (grabber arm is recommended). also the grass around the trees was a little too long, which can hide some nasty animals (snakes or something), just something to think about I guess. disappointing experience overall :( -One star knocked off because there was little sparse apples. - Another knocked off because of the tall glass -lack of signage or employee help to navigate the orchard read more

This review is only for pick-your-own. If I were reviewing based on prior years (prior to 2023), I'd give a five-star review. They generally have a good variety of apples and always a plentiful supply. This year, however, there appears to be some issues with some of the varieties - particularly the Gala, Honeycrisp, Macoun and MacIntosh. You could tell that many of the trees were dealing with some sort of illness or fungus. The Gala apples were either very small or significantly blemished. That does happen from time to time with orchards but Lyman should have notified visitors of this before selling bags that proved to be difficult to fill. read more

August 29 12 pm pear pick your own stand. I have been coming to this pick your own for 10 years since my kid was 5 years old. I had a little purse with by phone, Wallet, and water bottle. There were 2 ladies one old and one middle age. The old one told me to leave my purse in the car after I payed and walking into the picking field. They said it's their company policy. Yes policy not to bring own bags, but not a personal purse. NEVER have I been asked this before. The older one said she worked for Lyman for 50 years (does she own the place? Does not look like it if u know what I mean), maybe it's time for her to go. She is a legal liability for the company with her nasty unprofessional behavior and erroneous interpretation of the rules. We asked for refund for the large pear bag and medium size white peach. She did not care and was happy to ruin our day. We NEVER picked pears or white peaches. After we went to pick apples gala and yellow peaches at 2 different stands and no one even questioned me. This shows that she should never speak to people or represent Lyman orchards. She does not possess any human decency. high school kids at the other stands have better manners. read more

This is a CT staple in all seasons! I love how fresh everything is! From the pick your own to pre-packaged foods! Their desserts are everything! I'm so happy that I tried their deli. The sandwiches are made fresh to order, and just by reading the menu, it didn't seem like any of those sandwiches were going to be a let down. I had the anniversary sandwich. It comes with their homemade chips and a delicious apple. Yummy apple butter spread with turkey and Vermont cheddar cheese! Is your mouth drooling yet? Haha. The service here is great! This particular visit was on a Friday afternoon, around 2 PM. I have been here several times on weekends, but it is so packed that I hadn't had a chance to really enjoy it. We decided to order a late lunch and enjoy it outside sets there was plenty of seating room. We both ordered the brisket sandwich and a bottle of their apple cider. The sandwich was huge; if we ever return and order another sandwich, we would probably split it. It comes with chips. The sandwich was delicious, but it was so filling there was no room for the chips or a dessert, so we got those to go. I got the a German butter cake and my friend, an apple cider donut. Both good. I did notice that between 4 and 5 PM the place got packed. It was more the store than the actual grounds. I'm assuming it was people stopping in on the way home from work to pick up food or snacks. The market also has some prepared food, like stuffed breads and salads that I would definitely pick up if I were having people over. Overall, it was a nice visit and I think that from now on I would go on a weekday as opposed to a weekend because I got to walk around in a joke and enjoy the outdoor space without the crowds. read more

I am so disappointed with how Lyman is now handling pick your own. I should preface this by saying it is our annual tradition to apple pick at Lyman. We normally each grab a bag and everyone picks their favorite varieties for eating and then I pick a larger amount for baking. Today, we were required to go directly to the stand and tell them whether we wanted to purchase a small, medium or large bag and then pre-pay for that size bag. They claim this is being done so you don't have to wait in line at checkout, but that is a poor excuse. You are now waiting it line at check-in instead of checkout. I was also told it was to limit plastic bags found in the orchard. I am glad I brought my own bags with me because I separated my eating apples from my baking apples within the prepaid bag I was required to purchase. Otherwise, I am guessing which apples are which. They also claim there is a cost savings the larger the bag you buy, but when you underfill the large bag you have now overpaid and what happens when you underestimate the size of the apples or how many you will end up picking? Now I have to go purchase another bag? Not happening. I am just leaving with less apples, which means less revenue for them. Once the medium bag I purchase is filled I am done, thus limiting how much I purchased as opposed to when each member of my family had a bag of apples that we brought to checkout and paid for the unlimited quantity that we each picked. So, they lost money on me today. I also feel it is hard to lock yourself into which size bag to choose when you don't know the quality of the apples (I might pick less if they aren't sweet or the only apples left in my desired variety are too high up in the trees to reach, or the apples are really tiny, etc) until you start walking through the orchard to see what is available. This was so unnecessary, in my opinion, as we have never waited a long time in line to checkout when apples were weighed. I honestly don't think I have ever even waited 5 minutes in line to checkout and we always go on weekends when it is busiest. I seriously hope they reconsider this price structure for next year, as I will head to Bishop's Orchard in Guilford instead. read more

After finishing up pumpkin picking nearby, my family and I stopped by the Market to buy some apple cider and apple cider donuts. We arrived at around 12PM on a Saturday and there was a pumpkin painting event and a nice amount of people visiting. Inside the Market was pretty packed and there was a line at the bakery for the apple cider donuts, but we did not mind waiting. Near the bakery, there were refrigerators filled with juice, dairy, eggs, etc... so we grabbed some bottles of chilled apple cider. The staff were friendly and gave us a choice between Cinnamon Sugar, Glazed and Plain apple cider donuts. We went with ordering a half-dozen, three cinnamon sugar & three glazed. They also had other desserts such as cupcakes, pies and cookies. I was also prepared to buy an Apple Fritter but they were completely sold out so I'm assuming those are amazing, if you can get your hands on them! We then checked out at the register and sat ourselves at one of the tables nearby the market. There was a beautiful view of a Lake and farmhouse in the distance as we enjoyed the beautiful weather and refreshing apple cider. Then, it was time to crack open the box of beautiful donuts. I decided to go with the glazed one and it was not only moist, flavorful and sweet but slightly dense in the BEST way possible. Almost cake-like. Definitely one of the best apple cider donuts I've ever had! We wrapped up our time at the Market since it got pretty crowded, but there was a lot of fresh veggies & fruits, all-natural jellies & butters and fun Halloween-themed treats available! I would say this is the best orchard around Hartford area, or may be the best orchard anywhere that I have gone to. Every year I make it a point to go here twice or thrice. On warmer months they have breakfast on the deck. Butter grilled cider donut is my favorite. An apple cider donut is cut into 2 and grilled with a lot of butter. This year (2018) I felt they are using less butter. Until last year donut used to be drenched in butter. Its so yummy and filling. Apple cider pancakes are good too. I always take a side of home fries. They give a ton of home fries. You need 2 - 3 people to finish it. Apple crisp is sold in a separate stand, which opens up at 11. Apple crisp with ice cream is nice as well. Apple barrel store is very congested. They should think about doubling or tripling the size of the store. Apple cider donut is a high demand item. Apple pies are very good as well. Apple picking and other fruit picking (depending on the season) is fun. Keep in mind that honey crisp apple is sold in a separate stand. This orchard is a great place for families and really anyone! This was our first time here, we came for the Fourth of July barbecue that was advertised but we ended up eating at the restaurant that's attached to their golf course -- their burgers were delicious!!! We then ventured to their blueberry and raspberry orchard, it was amazing! and we got a great haul of fresh raspberries and blueberries for a steal of a price! If I lived locally I would only get my fruit from here, it's that delicious! My only downside is that each orchard is separate, so you do have to get back in your car to get from the raspberry fields to the blueberry fields. Our experience at the orchard was great and we will definitely be back in the fall for pumpkin and apple picking :-) read more

Do not ship anything to a yone from Lyman Orchards. I sent a very large and expensive gift to my disabled brother's caregiver. Who has always gone above and beyond on helping him. She was very much looking forward to it for her and her family. But she couldn't eat any of the apples because they were all bruised and smashed! And the pie and donuts were sealed. You're not a new orchard! I send fruit gifts allotment time. And your customer service for orders shipped is non existent. The apples were rotten. It's so embarrassing! Their customer service for online shipping orders is non existent. There is no choice on the phone menu for this. Then you have to call another department, like the bakery and that get defensive and unhelpful. I paid for 2 day air and it took almost two 2 weeks to get there. I could have ordered from other orchards in other states, but I was trying to support local and CT businesses. I've ordered and sent countless fruit gifts before and it has never shown up looking and tasting like this. It wasn't packed right. Like Harry and David would do. Like Stew Leonard's would do. This is a nice way to spend a couple of hours during the Fall. They have a cornmaze, a horse drawn hayride and pony rides for the kids. The activities were reasonably priced. They also offer pumpkins and other treats for sale outdoors if you don't want to go in the store. The store is stocked with farm fresh veggies and fruits, jams and other condiments and fresh baked goods. The aroma of the fresh baked goods is incredible! We purchased the glazed apple cider donuts. They are perhaps the best I've ever had. They have an amazing crunch outside and the inside is so soft and sweet. The glaze is far better than the cinnamon sugar. The only thing that we thought was odd, the store itself was packed. We haven't had that type of experience with so many people inside an establishment since before the pandemic. It was very strange. It was so crowded as we were leaving the employees clearly sensed an issue and were talking about how someone needs to be counting people at the doors. True, there are plenty closer places where we could get apple cider donuts, but Lyman's are always worth the drive. For this reason alone I keep coming back. Also, I haven't seen many bumble berry pies/crisps out there, but you can find them at the Apple Barrel, another reason to make the drive (and if it's not on the sales floor, ask! A bakery employee was kind enough to find me a bumble berry in the freezer). There are plenty PYO spots at Lyman but if you don't feel like PYO, there is plenty of fresh veggies, berries, and fruits here. If you're passing through and only have time to make one ag. stop, it will be well spent here! Pierogis, meats, dairy, preserves (their apple cider jelly is awesome on a biscuit/breakfast sandwich btw) and ice cream, anything you're looking for at a farm stand is here. The corn and sunflower mazes and carnival cutout/photo stops are always fun. When it's pumpkin time, go early in the day since this is the place to be. It pains me to give such a beautiful and seasonal place one star, but I feel compelled to simply because it is impossible to enjoy eating your food outside on their patio. I am hoping that management reads this and takes what I say into consideration. The entire establishment is ruined by Yellowjackets. That's right, I said it. If you take one look outside on the patio all you see....and this is in no way an exaggeration...dozen of people flailing about getting stung, children screaming, people dropping their ice creams in horror because they are incessantly being attacked by a barrage of wasps. The wasps land on your food instantly contaminating it. They swarm around the open garbage cans. They buzz woman and children. I actually witnessed a 3 year old get stung right on the top of his hand which made him scream and fling his ice cream cup a mile. My family and I tried to enjoy ourselves but finally gave up and took out food home. Now, I know what you're going to say. "Ooooh but this is nature and they can't do anything about it." Not true at all. There are methods of pest control that could reduce and eliminate wasps regardless of how much food there is around. You just need to hire a pest control company that specializes in this. Think Disney. I DARE you to find a wasp anywhere in Disney. Or a mosquito for that matter. So until these measures are introduced I'm afraid I cannot visit here anymore. This experience was completely ruined. After coming here over the last 20+ years, it seems the pick your own and store keep falling from the high regard I used to keep Lyman at. The pick your own strawberries had nothing left to the point they should have just said they were picked out. People stepping all over the plants, spitting strawberries out and onto the plans, not a fun experience. We figured we would take the kids to the store at least the get donuts and strawberry ice cream. No donuts available and no strawberry ice cream. The creamery staff were just plain ignorant when ordering and after the order was ready, just put it on the counter and left it in front of the other people ordering. Lyman Orchards is always a weekend go-to anytime between June and October. The Apple Barrel is always bustling with fresh picked fruit, frozen pies, ice cream, cold drinks, baked goods, jams, jellies, local candy, etc. There is a wonderful cafe inside where you can order fresh-made sandwiches and eat inside or on the patio. The patio is a great place to get breakfast in the morning, and I am not ashamed to admit I've enjoyed Lyman's grilled apple cider donuts with whipped cream for breakfast many times. There are also pony rides and a maze outside to keep kids and adults both entertained! In the early summer you can enjoy delicious strawberry shortcake and head out to the orchards to pick strawberries and other summer fruits! In the fall you can pick all different kinds of apples, pumpkins, and pears. Sometimes food trucks will visit as well and that is always a treat to order hot food and enjoy lunch on the patio. It can definitely get crowded, especially during the fall season, so be prepared to arrive in the morning to make sure you get plenty of treats! My favorite has to be the apple cider donuts and stuffed bread you can heat up in the oven at home for dinner. Although Lyman is "top of mind" for central Connecticut apple picking, I didn't make it there until yesterday. What a beautiful spot! It was definitely a popular day, but since their land is so vast, there are multiple spots for parking and picking apples. Some of the signs are a little confusing, but ultimately, if you have a specific apple you're looking for, follow arrows for that specific apple type. (There are lots of apples not represented on the street signs, however.) There was also an abundant pumpkin patch at the front of the PYO area. The Apple Barrel store itself was incredibly crowded on this given day due to a popular food truck "festival" going on at the same time. This made for difficult shopping, but I did notice they have a ton of apple products. If there had been mini free samples, I could have been convinced to wait in the long checkout lines. The land around the store is quite beautiful and would be a nice place to eat a meal. There are a fair number of tables, but I noticed a lot of people sitting on the ground with blankets, as well. read more

We love Lyman Orchards, specifically their produce and pies. Today we went in did some shopping and got some food to go. I ordered two wraps the team was super friendly and everything was made very quick. Super convenient. The issue I had was specifically with the lettuce used in our wraps. Upon bitting into the wraps it seemed as if there was a weird grit to everything. Thought it could possibly be the seeds in my strawberry turkey wrap. Upon further inspection we found that there was dirt/sand on the lettuce used in the wraps. This is the first and last time I will be ordering food from Lyman's. Leaves me to question the sanitation of the facility and other food items being sold in the market. read more

I have to start with the best part first, then I'll get to the orchards! THE SUNFLOWER MAZE IS A-MAZE-ING! I was overwhelmed by the beauty of the humongous field of brightly swaying sunflowers just waiting for us to run through the maze! The set up was incredible! It was only $4.50 and provided hours of fun! I went with a group of fam and friends. After the tickets are bought, you grab a map and/or a trivia sheet to help you meander through the maze! I loved it! So many photo ops! Be careful of the bees, my daughter got stung. I also suggest bringing water as you get a bit hot in that labyrinth of flowers! Once completed you get a sticker for surviving the maze! There's also a walk up landing for a gorgeous view of the sunflower files! This is fun for the whole family and not to be missed! It was the Sunny spot in my day! (Im told Lyman's does a corn maze (maize lol) in the fall!! I'm a sucker for orchards! I love to bring the kids and have them pick their own fruit. Not only does it bring them close to nature, but it teaches them that food doesn't just appear in a grocery store. It's cool to watch them picking apples, peaches and berries. They get a sense of pride showing my their haul! And while my kids are now grown, we still love to visit orchards! Ly man's is one of the best! Acres upon acres of trees, bushes and vines filled with delicious fruits. Inside their main "barn" they also sell veggies and other food. It's set up thoughtfully. Each section is clearly marked: the bakery, the jams and condiments, the deli, the gift shop, the coffee shop... The fruit section is filled with bagged fruit and shelves where you can "cherry pick" you own if you are into going into the fields. The peaches were in season and were delicious. Some of the apples were a bit soft so check for crispness. The condiment area had a wonderful selection of honeys, apple butters, hot sauces, jams and jellies, plus teas and coffees! We ordered lunch at the deli. I got the brie grilled cheese with raspberry jam which came with fresh cut potato chips. The sandwich looked a mess on the plate, but it was tasty. The service was slow. The eating area could have been cleaner. But the rest of the place is so nice and well-stocked that I didn't pay this much mind. We come to Lyman's every time we visit CT! My hubby grew up here and Lyman's has been around for over a hundred years! The story of its history is printed on big posters in the restaurant! I love a family owned success story! read more

I have been coming here for many years and now I bring my own children here. They have fruit picking ,sunflower maze,fresh made to order food and donuts and groceries. Fresh apple pies or apple cider . They have it all. The smell inside is the best. I came for a box or their apple cider donuts today. Half glazed and half sugar. Crispy and soft on the inside just as if they just made it. They have a great selection for meals and it's so hard to choose. Fruit and veggies line the isles while fridge/freezers have many tasty items to take home. If you drive up the road a bit you will be at the orchards where apples, blueberries and raspberries are there for the picking. They weigh it on site there . If you love fall you'll love this market. It's located near the petting zoo and the corn maze, which is a must do in my opinion! Lyman Orchards is a classic staple of CT, I highly recommend going if you're new to the area or have never been. They have freshly baked pasteires from pies or donuts and they taste great! They also have packaged sauces and jams. The items are priced reasonably and spaced out all over the market. With a very packed environment, they did a great job of taking orders and checking out in an efficient time. The only downside was the upkeep of the bathrooms. They smelled gross and weren't as clean as I had hoped. read more

They have what they call festivals, which are very deceiving went to the strawberry festival. There was nothing there with wild seeing there were five food trucks and a face painting and he rides no booths for arts and crafts or nothing to entertain adults or children. Boring boring boring I need to stop calling Themselves having festivals the food trucks were horrible, outrageous prices they should consider screening their food trucks for even having them there get a petting zoo or some sort of pony rides. This is the most picturesque grocery store ever!! But seriously, besides offering something for everyone, including a high end grocery store with all local goods, there is also a sandwich shop that makes to order your delicious meal using ingredients from the grocery store. And of course, they have the best apple cider around. Parking was also easy and they have a huge lot. There was not a long line at all and after about 10 minutes, we got our order There is ample seating inside but it was such a nice day we sat outside at the picnic style tables. There were only a few others there and we had a great view of the valley and golf course across the way. My Macoun sandwich, which consisted of pastrami and swiss, along with their sauce, was great! I wish the bread was a bit softer, but not a big deal. read more

I was just having a blast running around here in wonder. I love that they have been able to expand their business into some great agro-tourism for families of all ages I love that even if I did not want to pick my own fruit (although that is quite silly) I can head over to the farm store stocked with not only fruit but local produce, food stuffs AND apple cider donuts. Sunflower maze was amazing! Such a fun kid friendly weekend activity. The maze took about 30/45 min to complete, (we took many pictures) Trivia questions were given to help navigate the maze. After completing the maze I went across the street and picked about a pound of peaches. Would recommend going to the market! They have an abundance of fresh fruit and Vegetables as well as some of the best apple cider donuts I've had! read more
