I have enjoyed visiting hardware stores and have bought hardware things from them since high school. I visited Lutz for the first time in the neighborhood. I'm very familiar with the big box hardware stores. Lutz has the things that home owners need while the big box hardware stores use their space for things Lutz does not carry to focus on contractors. They have everything. They do have their own brand of tools, one step up from Harbor Fright and less than name brands. They have their own parking lot. On more than one occasion I have found myself in the Camas/Washougal area (don't ask why) and in need of a good hardware store. Locals all say "Lutz", for a while I thought they were just figure skating fans celebrating the 1962 World Figure Skating Championships when Donald Jackson landed the first triple lutz. Turns out no one knew who Donald Jackson was and they were, in fact, telling me about a hardware store. Lutz Hardware is in downtown Camas, has convenient parking, an excellent selection of everything I need (again, don't ask) and even a friendly store cat who likes to get pets. The people who work in this store must be on some serious mood elevators because they are all friendly, upbeat, happy to drop whatever mundane task they are performing and make sure you get what you need. My most recent experience was this weekend when Mr. Lutz himself helped me pick out the power sander and oil I needed to turn an old gray back yard table into something beautiful again. I come to this hardware store about twice a month for various things around the house. All the time my wife asks why don't you go to Lowe's or Home Depot? Here's my take.. it's a small business and I support small business when I can. It doesn't feel like you're at the hardware store. It feels like you went to your buddy's house who happens to have everything you need for small projects around the house. The staff are all friendly and polite. They have almost everything you could need for projects around the house and more. They even have a U-haul location there. There is plenty of parking, and the staff will help you load your stuff if you need. In addition to having all the usual screws, nails, paint, electrical, and chain or whatever you may need they also have the little things that make a small hardware store great. We just moved to this area and it's always nice to find a local hardware store that carries almost everything. The few times that we've gone in there most of the employees are very helpful, nice, polite and knowledgeable but this morning the young girl at the front tending the cashier was a a witch! No smile, had a terrible attitude and when we asked her where to find what we needed she barely replied. Maybe she was having a bad day but in a store where must of the staff are nice she shouldn't be working there especially since she is the first person a customer sees when entering the store. I found exactly what I needed and had been having trouble finding elsewhere (a miniature version of a "hairpin" clip for our grill).
