Came here with a large group and had a mixed experience. The famous tamales truly live up to the hype, absolutely delicious and unlike anything else. I also ordered the Margatini Passion, which was refreshing and well made. The guac and chips were decent but a little too much salt on the chips. That said, service was where things fell short. We arrived right when the restaurant opened, yet it still took quite a while before our drink orders were even taken. Overall, everything moved very slowly. When the food finally came out, one person in our group didn't receive their dinner until the rest of us were already halfway through eating, which was pretty frustrating. The food was great, but the service timing made the experience less enjoyable, especially for a larger party.

We ordered take out for lunch. The restaurant is nice inside, but a little loud. We got the shrimp quesadilla, rice and beans, a burrito, and brisket tamales. What I will say is, this didn't feel like authentic Mexican food in any way. The chip were ok. The salsa reminded me of thick marinara sauce. The texture and the taste just didn't do it for me!! The shrimp quesadilla was good with the queso. That was the best thing I had!! It wasn't much filling inside, but what was there was tasty. The tamales were decent, but it did throw me off because there was a hint of cinnamon which I absolutely didn't expect. I thought they were ok, but probably wouldn't order them again. The burrito was ok also. It's not wrapped like a normal burrito, so that was a little different. It's like if the food was seasoned it could have been much better, but some of it was bland and just missed the bar. All in all it was ok!!

Shrimp Tacos with Onions

I had the Shrimp tacos, they serving size is huge and could be good for sharing. The way they serve is very unique, you make it your own. Our server was great and very friendly. The place is not a typical Mexican restaurant it is more of a different vibe.

Enchiladas de queso

It's been a hot minute since I have dined here, but we popped in on a lovely Saturday evening and they happened to not be slammed so we were seated immediately for a table for two. I had the Enchiladas de Queso while my husband had the Luna Maya salad with flank steak. He said the meat was marinated nicely but the salad itself was pretty benign. My enchiladas were flavorful. I opted to have the red sauce on one and the green sauce on the other; so just know that is an option per our server's suggestion. The ambiance was nice. I feel it can tend to get loud in there but so many guests were dining outside that it wasn't too loud inside. Still a favorite place for a nice vibe, consistent food, and good service.

Was immediately seated. Seats are modern and clean. I got corner seat, good view to the bar and other seating. Very loud. Server was friendly, she had several recommendations: I ordered the steak chimichurri, served with dipping sauce, no sides of even micro greens. Am giving 3 stars for the food. The dipping sauce was super salty! Almost inedible .

This is a really nice place to have an intimate date or dinner out with your partner. Great menu items for sharing too. My only qualm is that it gets ridiculously loud. The echo is crazy. Unluckily I also had a really loud table behind me and that was a mood killer. I still recommend it but you'll prob get a better spot if you reserve ahead. We just walked in. It's a really big space and a bit dark in the evening.

Tacos de Carne Asada

So about Luna Maya... This place gets 3 stars because the staff are all so nice and attentive to everything going on. The decor is beautiful, a little artsy/industrial vibe. It's pretty dim inside which sets the mood for an intimate dinner. There is also outside seating. The experience was well worth it. About the food, respectfully it wasn't bad. But was it better than going to your average Mexican restaurant and spending half the price? I honestly couldn't say it was. The carnitas had such a "different " taste to them than I'm used to. The meat wasn't shredded, all though tender it was still somewhat dry at the same time. I believe that is because they use a more lean cut of pork, but if you're getting authentic carnitas it's going to be fatty. It's not meant to be a healthy option lol. I tasted the carne asada, nothing really special in my opinion. One size margaritas that were way too sour. The chips and salsa are not complementary and the chips tasted like they came out of a bag. Maybe I was expecting more because of all I've heard about this place and I traveled from across the water. I hate to leave a review that doesn't shine the best light but people should know what to expect. I did enjoy my time here, with the company I had and the wonderful service. If I do come back maybe I'll try the brisket instead.

Luna Maya was pretty good. I enjoyed my meal, but it's not somewhere I'd go again. The tamales...hard pass. It said sweet & savory, but it was all sweet. The meat had a strong cinnamon taste, & it was sitting on a bed of sweet mashed corn (maybe a sort of cornbread situation?) I'm not entirely sure what it was, but it wasn't a tamale. The guac was delicious. I wish we'd gotten the guac for a crowd. Our server said the single portion would be enough for 4 people, but we all wanted more after we finished it. The enchiladas de queso were good as well, but I've had better. The flan was the highlight of the night. It was rich & creamy. I loved it. The tres leche just seemed like a vanilla Bundt cake from Nothing Bundt Cakes that sat in a pool of condensed milk. Overall, it was fine, but it was expensive for what you got. I'm glad I tried it, but once was enough for me.

My wife LOVES their guac ($6 Happy Hour)

Norfolk staple restaurant I recommend to all in and out of towners. Best skinny mojito and Bolivian inspired Tamales around; other faves are the chips/guac, chorizo queso, chimichurri steak app, and mushroom poblano quesadilla. Indoor and outdoor seating, open for dinner only, staple margarita/mojito menu and rotating beer taps (happy hour on select weeknights at the bar). On street parking, typical Ghent.

So good, I ordered three more. The workers were super friendly, just some good people trying to make a good living. I love finding authentic Latin American places that have a familiar warm environment. La Boquita is…read moreno different. Its a whole in the wall in a neighborhood thats not the best but unfortunately a lot of good places are. I've been here twice, once for a late breakfast and once for lunch with a buddy of mine. This place centers around mostly South American foods (El Salvador + Honduras) and is a local hotspot for the Hispanic locals around breakfast time. The outside is ugly and parking can be limited but just park at another vacant establishments parking lot. Once inside theres a couple of rinky dink tables and overall the layout reminds me of a butcher shop my grandparents frequent in Puerto Rico...but don't worry its clean and you won't find blood splatter anywhere. The food is cheap cheap cheap! And the portions are large. I usually go for an order of baleadas, which is mostly a typical Honduran wheat flour tortilla folded and stuffed with mashed beans, eggs, Mexican style cream and avacados. One is usually enough but somehow I managed to fit two ;) They also put pork instead or chicken but I opt out on that options. This goes great with coffee too! I try replicating this simple dish at home and fail horribly. They also make bandeja paisa which is usually associated as a Columbian breakfast meal but its quite typical in many countires in Central America. This dish is definitely heafty offering a fried egg, a strip(s) of chicarones ( a seasoned pork rinds that has a chewier texture), refried beans, arepas (corn tortillas) plaintains ( usually sweet) rice and avacados. My friend who is a Honduran native usually opts for this as he eats meat. He says it reminds him of home and that this is his favorite local joint for it. This place is a small family owned business and has been here for quite a while. They know thier regulars and are nice people. They aren't too chatty almost shy but that doesn't stop them from inviting you to eat some good food at thier place. Overall, I'd be a regualr if I didn't live 30+ miles away but when I'm in the mood for a full belly and food that is reminescent of my culutral roots I go here. So please people come here and give it a shot :)

I had never had Guatemalan before and while many of the ingredients were familiar, it was put together in a fun and very tasty way. The pupusas were legit, and everything was fresh down to the house made flour tortilla (make sure to request 'hecho de mano'). Only miss was that the whole fried fish was a touch dry. I will definitely hit this place up again. I think it's major selling point is that it can make foods from a variety of Central American countries very well. My husband & I both had the Lengua tacos, rice on the side, & my nephew had the carne asada tacos & raved about them. I ordered the cheesy birria taco plate, which came with three tacos, consomé, rice, and beans. I also got a mango margarita because, well, it's Taco Tuesday. It only seemed appropriate. The food was really good! The birria tacos were exactly what I wanted them to be. Cheesy, flavorful, and satisfying, with a delicious consomé for dipping. The rice and beans were good as well, and I was very happy with my meal. The mango margarita, on the other hand, wasn't my favorite. It tasted like it was made with some sort of premade sour mix rather than fresh ingredients. Definitely not what I'd consider a craft margarita, but to be fair, I wasn't expecting one either. It was fine for what it was, just not something I'd be particularly excited to order again. Our server was Giselle, and she was attentive enough throughout the meal. I do have one small service-related gripe, though, and this is something that bothers me at restaurants in general. Once we'd finished eating, our table was cleared, and then... nothing. No check, no explanation, no "Can I get you anything else?" Just the assumption that we'd figure out the next step ourselves, I suppose. Eventually, when Giselle came back around, we asked about paying and learned that we were supposed to pay at the counter. Which is perfectly fine! I have absolutely no issue with that setup. But how were we supposed to know? It would have been nice to hear something as simple as, "No rush, but whenever you're ready, you can pay up front." It's a small thing, but I think those little moments of communication make a difference in the overall dining experience. A little reading of the room goes a long way. As for the atmosphere, I really enjoyed it! The music was great, with a hip-hop and R&B vibe that made the restaurant feel lively and fun. I'm not sure if that's their usual playlist or something specific to Taco Tuesday, but either way, I was here for it. We were seated right away when we arrived around 6 PM, but the restaurant definitely started filling up as the evening went on. It was noticeably busier by the time we were finishing our meal. One thing worth mentioning is that we were told Taco Tuesday comes with a 90-minute table limit. That wasn't an issue for us at all, but it's something to keep in mind if you're a particularly slow eater or planning to settle in for a long evening of tacos, drinks, and conversation. Apparently, Taco Tuesday comes with a countdown clock! Overall, I enjoyed my visit to El Rey 2. The birria tacos were delicious, the atmosphere was fun, and the music was right up my alley. The margarita could have been better, and there was a minor opportunity for improvement with the service, but neither would keep me from returning. I'd definitely come back, especially for those birria tacos!

Everything was packed with great care for takeout, neatly wrapped and organized. I also appreciated that the pico de gallo was served on the side, which kept everything fresh and well-balanced. The only small downside is that they don't offer a traditional salad dressing for the taco salad, but fresh lime works perfectly and still keeps it very enjoyable. On a separate delivery order a few days later, I tried their birria tacos with a side of rice and another fresca. Again, everything arrived fresh and flavorful.
