First time here in a really long time for restaurant week! My boyfriend and I got the $15 lunch menu which was a lot of food for $15 each! The tacos were fish and asado! Both very good, but the asado was my favorite! It was a sweet BBQ flavor and simple with pico on top! Large tacos may I add! I got rice and beans for a side which were pretty good, but not great! Black beans were mild on the spice level and rice was unremarkable. My boyfriend got the arepa (shredded beef) and it was pretty good! The plantains were my favorite side by far! They were cut thick and fried with a good crunch! We got queso and street corn for an appetizer and the street corn was my favorite! It was sweet, savory and tangy all at once! This is such a cool restaurant! They have indoor and semi-outdoor seating. The semi-outdoor seating reminds me of a big garage where the doors opened, but there's a roof so you're covered if it rains. We ate inside :-) at one of the tables. The service was great. Madeline was new, but she did great and the bartender (didn't catch her name) helped out. We started with the guacamole fritters. It was so yummy! Crunchy on the outside, but soft on the inside. The chicken arepa was excellent!! The black beans were also great. They were almost like a stew with various peppers and onions. I also tried a salmon street taco. It was delicious. Whenever I need a taco pick me up, I head to Luna. The crispy fish and club tacos are my favorite! They're always stuffed to the brim with ingredients, hot, and packed with flavor. The $5 margarita is a sweet deal but their regular shots and cocktails are tasty too. I typically sit at the bar and it's always good vibes. Their staff is friendly and attentive, with great menu recommendations. The meatballs are my fav appetizer but the avocado bites are a close second. They also have some loaded fries that taste amazing, but be prepared to take a nap after eating them. The food at Luna was amazing! So why only 3 stars? The service is lacking, but the quality of the food saves them. I have tried to go to Luna twice. The first time, I didn't realize there was a concert at the brewery next door. We waited in line for a long time, only for the cashier to be extremely rude and short. Nonetheless, I understood. They were extremely busy and staff seemed very limited. No big deal, I thought. A few months later, a friend and I decided to stop by on our lunch break. The place is relatively dead. There's two tables and two people at the bar. We wait to be spoken to because there's no sign directing you to sit or come to the bar and order. You do order at the bar, but there were no menus near by. I've been wanting to try them so I knew exactly what I wanted to try-- the arepa burger. Nope, no arepas, no flour tortillas, no corn salsa. Apparently, they were pretty busy on Sunday so they ran out of almost everything on the menu. Luckily it was taco Tuesday so ALL tacos are $3. That was nice, so I order the shrimp, salmon, and club taco. My friend was hoping to order the burrito, but it's unavailable so she gets the nachos. We waited for probably about 40 mins for our food. Unfortunately, it took so long we had to ask for it to just be packed up as a to go order. I didn't get to try the food there, but when I did get to eat it. The food was really good! I think if you're wanting to try them. Your best bet is gonna be a week night dinner. I wouldn't recommend if you're wanting somewhere quick or if it's any other big events going on around them. This is one of my favorite places in Avondale. The servers are always friendly and the food is always amazing. Also, their cocktails are delicious. My favorite meal is the Cachapas. It is a sweet corn pancake stuffed with cheese, drizzled with a sour cream-based sauce, and stuffed with meat. And, when I say stuffed with meat, I mean A LOT of meat which makes this place even more amazing. In the past, I have ordered the roasted pork as well as the shredded chicken. Both were delicious, but to me, the best one is the roasted pork. Regarding appetizers, I have tried the Mexican street corn as well as the Guacamole Fritters both were really good. Their mojitos are also really, really good. They have three flavors lime, passion fruit, and raspberry. I have tried the passion fruit as well as the raspberry and asked them to leave out the mint in both drinks. My wife prefers her drinks with the mint, so I have tried the drinks both ways. My favorite of the three is the passion fruit. What makes them so good is the fact that they use fresh fruit, and make their own syrups. read more

I really hate to give such a poor rating to a local business unless there is some blatant horrible service, ethical issue, or safety/cleanliness problem. That being said, I don't feel comfortable giving any more than 1 star for this business My husband and I showed up at 6:30pm on a Friday night. There's a sign that said wait to be seated, we stood behind a couple who had already waited a few minutes for any kind of update from staff. About 1/3 of the indoor dining area was not open for use (chairs on top of tables etc). Of the remaining tables, 1 was needing busting. The bar had 6/8 seats occupied. There was also an outdoor dining/bar combined area that was fairly busy but not totally full of people. I noticed several employees walk by and talk to each other, no one said anything to the now 3 parties waiting for seating. Finally after about 10 minutes the bartender (who seemed flustered) told us someone would be with us shortly. At that point we observed a large cockroach (3.5-4 inches long) slowly meander from the bar area into the dining room (all indoors btw). My husband and I looked at each other... and turned to walk out. All in all unfortunate, because we were excited to try out a new place offering arepas, something very difficult to find in the area. For what it's worth, we were willing to overlook the understaffed situation - that's common nowadays. Several employees walked by us though and made eye contact and said nothing, which is generally poor. We were still willing to overlook that - I've worked in restaurants, it can be very stressful at times. However, we were not willing to dine with the cockroaches. Mold, mildew, overflowing trash all over the bathroom an hour after opening. The bartender is the host, and the chef is the server. Not even an attempt to make a Latin friendly atmosphere. You'll get a more apparent atmosphere at an Applebees for what that's worth. You can still smell the transmission fluid from where the building used to be a mechanic shop. I grew up in South Florida and have for years regretted the lack of Cuban restaurants in the Birmingham area. Kook Korner makes great sammiches, but sometimes you want something a little more substantial. Tonight I found something a little more substantial. I had business in the Crestwood area tonight and swung by Luna Latin Cuisine on the way. I was there when they opened the doors--had the entire restaurant to myself. Everything looked good, but I settled on the Pabellon: jasmine rice, black beans, sweet plantains, and shredded beef. Man oh man! The plantains were perfect. Ripe and sweet. The rice and beans are plated side by side, but I made sure every forkful of rice had some beans mixed in and that every forkful of beans had some rice mixed in. Heaven. The beef was tasty and well-seasoned, tender and not at all chewy. In other words, it was just the meal I was craving. I can't wait to go back and try some of the other dishes. read more

My burger was tender enough to melt in your mouth... and it had bacon, avocado, cheese, and a fried egg how can you complain? I got the fried yuca which I'd describe as a tougher fry while still having a potato taste (I would get them again). Her tostones were fantastic as well and came with 6 decent sized tostones with chicken/bacon/avocado. Came here for dinner Friday night and we were immediately seated. As per my friend's recommendation we ordered rasberry mojitos and Cachapas (we tried roasted pork and beef) The mojitos were delicious, and I enjoyed the cachapas much more than I expected to. The subtly sweet corn pancake(?) was a nice contrast to the savory, rich meat inside and there wasn't that much cheese so everything was very well balanced. Stopped into this new place today after passing by last week and noticing that it was open. Pretty glad I did. A couple of things...nothing on the menu is more than about 12 bucks, they've got a full bar, and the people working there today were super friendly. So all in all it seems like a pretty good place to kill some time, grab a bite and or get a drink without breaking the bank. The food is authentic. I had the meatballs to start, and the asada but I switched asparagus for black beans. Every thing seemed fresh, well seasoned, and both were nicely plated. Looks like someone in the kitchen cares about what they're doing. For now, they aren't doing any deserts. But they plan to add them as volume picks up. If they add flan to the menu I'll be here all the time. Overall this place is definitely worth a visit. They've got some unique flavors going on, and the prices and service are on point. The world needs more places where you can try new things for 12 bucks or less. read more

This is a new restaurant that is in an old firehouse. So the atmosphere is pretty cool. The outdoor decor is pretty cool as well. We met friends here for dinner. Our drink order was taken right away. The menu isn't large but there are a lot of options for your choice of meat. Unfortunately, we waited a long time for our food order to be taken and actually finally had to call someone over to take our order. I decided to order the meatball appetizer so we could get some food right away. It was about five small meatballs and they were delicious. So I'm sure the meatball sandwich is probably really good too. Everyone tried them and we all really liked them. Everyone, except me, got the cachapas which are like a sweet cornbread pancake that is filled with your choice of meat. I tried hubby's and thought it was fantastic. The combo of flavors was really good. Our friends loved theirs too. I ordered the pabellon which was seasoned meat, rice, black beans, and fried plantains. I tasted it and it was delicious. The beans were great and the meat was packed with flavor. Unfortunately, the only food that was hot were the plantains. I sent it back to get heated up and when it came back again, the rice was the only thing that felt warmer. I decided to eat it anyway rather than send it back a second time. The fact that I still loved it despite the fact that it wasn't hot really says something. Obviously, they have a few kinks to work out particularly with the service like taking your order right away and making sure the order is correct (my friend got his cachapa with the wrong meat but they let him keep that one and made him a new one). Also they need to make sure everyone is served at the same time which is my biggest pet peeve. My husband and I got ours at the same time but our friends didn't get theirs. I sent mine back so it left hubby eating by himself. Overall, a great experience. I would definitely come here again and look forward to returning. The staff were super friendly and cared about our experience. My meal was taken off the bill which I didn't ask for and certainly didn't expect but I just thought that that showed how much they care that they got it right. Also, everything is reasonably priced. This place is awesome! We came here for brunch on a Sunday. I ordered a Morena to drink and it was fantastic and it was pretty. I ordered the Pabellon which so flavorful and delicious. The pork was plentiful and the black beans were a great pairing. It came with plantains on the side which were dessert... so good and perfectly cooked. We also got the Cuban sandwich which was also fantastic. I wish I took pictures of the food because the presentation was just as wonderful as the taste. Great quality and quantity for the price. I finally visited Luna Latin this week. I had been previously a couple times during their posted business hours, only to find they were randomly closed To keep the review brief, it looked like the main selling point for the establishment was alcohol. I solely went to sit down and get food, and almost felt like the food was an afterthought to the bar. Sadly just wasn't impressed with the quality of the food, flavors, or ingredients. Honestly felt a little bit Americanized compared to other Latin restaurants I've enjoyed. I don't drink so that may have made my experience worse than if I did. (Also, not a big deal, but there was no music playing at all, so it threw off the dining experience a bit. Almost like I was eating in a waiting room) All in all, if you're looking for a place to grab cocktails and maybe a quick bite to eat while you drink, I think it would be a good place to check out! But if you're specifically looking for a dining experience I honestly wouldn't recommend. Also calling ahead wouldn't hurt because I've found their hours to be a bit unpredictable read more

A lot of people tell me that they don't like mojitos because of the mint taste. This drink was more raspberry than mint and was really good! For my meal, I ordered a side of sweet plaintains and the cachapa with roasted pork. Cachapa is a Venezuelan dish that consists of a rolled sweet corn pancake with sour cream on top. I chose to have my pancake rolled around roasted pork. This dish was absolutely delicious. The texture of the pancake, the sweetness of the corn and the roasted pork was the perfect combination for an incredible explosion of flavor. Regarding service, it was a little slow. They are, however, new, and they'll admit they are working out the kinks. I am definitely looking forward to a return visit! read more

The bad news is 1) Maddie states that the kitchen closes at 9:00 (I was there at 8:48) so in order to place an order, I would need to pay first...I'm not sure how I would be charged before I placed my order...but ok 2) I was informed that they don't take Apple Pay 3) When I went to pay with cash, I was informed that they don't give change so if I did pay with cash the change would essentially be their tip...well if I have a $100 bill, I'm not giving you a $80 tip 4) Right before the kitchen closes at 9:00 (approximately 8:57) Maddie told me the kitchen was closed 5) Oh and there were no paper towels in the bathroom read more

The texture of the cachapa is like eating a pancake with only cheese, the cream had no flavor at all, it's horrible. the pavilion, the meat was very salty, the rice was old, the plantain needed to be cooked more, everything was horrible. Why haven't you been here yet?! I'm sold, I had an amazing time! We got there around 7:45pm on a Friday and had to wait because we had a table of 5 (it's a small place). We decided to get drinks at the bar while we waited. The margarita was delicious. Once seated, our waitress was so kind and attentive. Half of our group were native Spanish speakers and she so seamlessly accommodated us in both languages. After getting drinks, the non-native Spanish speakers were interested in testing our Spanish so the waitress agreed to help us practice by only speaking Spanish. It was a fun challenge and she got a kick out of it! Majority of the table ordered the Cachapa and it was AMAZING! I want another one as I write this review. I had mine with pork, but everyone loved theirs regardless of the type of meat they ordered inside. I also got a side of plantains that were good too, perfectly ripe. Finally, the decor and atmosphere was really cute. It's a great intimate setting. Before leaving, we got a chance to meet the owner and he was great as well. The façade of the restaurant draws you in for one of the best meals of your life. Food: fantastic. My table split an order of nachos as an appetizer and the consensus is that those nachos were the best nachos we've ever had. I had the pabellón. Zero regrets. Lot of bang for your buck. Ambiance: Lovely lighting and interior! Music is not super loud so you can carry a conversation with the table easily. Bathrooms are also super clean and well decorated. Staff: So kind and welcoming!
