Overall, I choose to keep returning to this shop because I prefer a no-frills experience and a cheap price in exchange for a hit or miss cut, as I've honestly been to more posh places that still give you hit or miss cuts.

Hair is serious business. If you are interested in developing the kind of personal, long-lasting…read morerelationship with a professional hair stylist I have enjoyed with Adam Callaway -- then by all means, seek out 4001 Duval salon. Located in Hyde Park (within walking distance of Hyde Park Bar & Grill) - this place is low key, relaxed and very much has an Austin feel to it. They always have interesting art on the walls from local artists and while they are an Aveda salon, it is an owner-operated place and each stylist is going to have their own rates (definitely a different feel than a commercially managed affair). Bottom line -- it's clear these people care about their business & their patrons, which is not something you are going to get at a large impersonal salon. Anyone can trim ends and burn your hair straight. Developing a rapport with me, understanding how my hair behaves naturally -- and playing to its strengths, giving me AMAZING color that gives my hair depth and light that no-one can tell is not mine, and making sure my hair always looks 'healthy'.... that takes true professional skill and talent. Using Aveda products, these stylists look to bring out the best in your natural hair -- and do not do excessive styling -- which is fine with me. They have always offered me coffee, water or sodas when I arrive -- which I find more than acceptable. I cannot imagine going anywhere else.

I had the pleasure of getting a long-layer cut by Drew, the proprietor of Luca Salon…read more Luca is a smaller, but very chic, full-service salon, on the second floor of a building featuring Elsi's Restaurant (Salvadorian food restaurant,) and El Paso Import Co (eclectic furniture & home decor.) Luca couldn't be in a better spot; it's easy access and easy parking on popular north Burnet Road. As for my haircut itself, I was extremely impressed with Drew. He is a true professional and was a wealth of information and good conversation. He was able to spot and point out some flaws from my previous haircut! He also gave me tips on how to dry my hair "curly" or "straight," and encouraged me to come back for more advice or if I needed help "getting it right." And the line of products he carries is amazing. I have thick, dark hair and most products simply weigh down my hair. Drew said the products he carries are: "Made in Spain especially for people with your kind of hair!"

I clearly requested a slanted, vertical side cut with the front length touching my chin, and suggested trimming only about 1 cm. What I left with was a nightmare--my hair chopped drastically short, front above my jawline, sides straight, and nothing like the photos. When I pointed this out, she casually said it would "look like the pictures in 8 weeks." I was shocked and humiliated. During the haircut, she even told me twice not to cross my legs--something I've never experienced at any salon. I asked to switch stylists, and was told I'd have to pay extra, even though the issue was not my fault. Ruby then claimed that because I agreed to a graduation in the back--which she suggested--she had to ignore my other requests. I cried in my car on the way home, devastated. $160+tax for a ruined haircut and a traumatizing experience. I can only hope no one else has to go through this. Without exaggeration, this was the worst salon experience of my life.

Mid-long, feathered, flowy, side-parted. No buzzcuts or generic barbershop bro cuts haha. Lived in Mexico City for years and I couldn't find anyone there or here who could really nail it, except the person who cuts my hair back home. Like sure my hair looks good after a week or two of a haircut, but that feeling of getting a great haircut, agh, never. Always convicing myself like aah it's not that bad, bla bla. Then I found Vina. I actually first noticed her from outside Roar. She was finishing a cut on this guy, and my girlfriend and I were like, "Damn, that's a great haircut." I literally took a mental picture of Vina Three months later, I booked with her. And yeah... she gets it. She's an artist. My hair has been looking UFF. From the moment she was done to now a little over a week. I look good. I feel good. I'm getting compliments everywhere I go. All thanks to her. She's my hairstylist from now on. No questions asked. Looking forward to the next one, Vina - Chris

She has been patient during the times I "colored" my own hair until I finally wised up and allowed her to work her magic with balayage. Sarah is someone I have trusted with my hair from when I was searching for someone who knew how to cut long hair (really long) to when I finally donated to locks of love, tried out some short bobs then let it grow out again and explored some color. She goes the extra step in not only learning and growing in her craft, but also teaching or offering input to other stylists when asked. I don't know what I would do if I ever had to move away as I have followed her to new salons! Outside of Sarah making me feel incredibly safe and comfortable during these past months, Jose Luis Salon is also set up for success. The salon itself is spaced out and divided to make sure social distancing is in place. You let them know when you are there/ready and they only bring in clients one at a time while doing temp checks too. So if you are tired of your quarantine hair or just ready to try a new look or color- Sarah Contey is your hair stylist and Jose Luis Salon is your place!

Although it is on the higher end with pricing, I was never disappointed with my service. A lot of that is because of my stylist, Mathew. He was willing to give recommendations but would never pressure (not that I ever resisted, once he did my hair once I trusted anything he recommended).
