A 40+ year old red alder on the property line with our neighbor had reached the end of it's life (typical for alder at this age). It was frequently been dropping large branches that were largely rotten. More concerning, it had been poorly pruned years ago and now was leaning over our house. With winter storms approaching, we were concerned. Greg came out and gave us an opinion. It could be saved and give us another 5 years or removed altogether. Bids were made for both. We also sought competitive bids and Lukens' was a tad lower than two others. Considering the age of the tree and the age signs it was showing, we opted for removal. Lukens came out with a crew of 4, one of whom was a climber. They also had right equipment to quickly move large tree chunks and protect the lawn from those small "tractors". I was very impressed not only by the level of tools to do the job, but of the crew. Watching the climber and crew work together was like watching a well practised dance! The job was done in about 4 hours, site left clean and undamaged. We've had other arborists/tree maintenance companies look at and prune our evergreens over the years. Lukens is the most professional and high quality of them. I am adding them to my "I hate franchises" list as a result. read more

Greg came out to consult and bid on a job at our new house. It involved a lot of work; many trees, overgrown landscaping, multiple removals, and so on. Greg was very generous with his time, answering all of my questions and volunteering information. He even popped over to my neighbors' house for a quick consult on a tree they had questions about, which they greatly appreciated. Greg exhibited a lot of expertise and professionalism, and additionally I appreciated that he often saw ways others didn't to improve tree health and longevity instead of just taking it down. His bid was competitive, though they did get edged out in the end. Loved the consult and the process, and I know the company has done good work with friends and neighbors, which is how I heard about it in the first place. read more

My wife and I decided a few days ago that our maple tree needed a trim. I hadn't had a chance to call around for quote yet but when we ran across two limb trimmers I decided to see if they knew, roughly, how much a job just like the one they were performing would cost. Now I understand if they dont know the business side of the operation. I'm surprised they didnt considering you would think management would want their employees semi-literate in certain things for situations like these but whatever. In response to my question one of the two men said, "a million dollars" and offered a smug smile before turning away back to what he was doing. I responded by saying, "what a great way to drum up business" and then thanked him for his time. A simple "I'm not sure. Here's a card. Call that number" would have sufficed. Courtesy and professionalism start at the top and this interaction told me all I need to know about how this business is run. If the ownership/management cared at all about the integrity of their business they should have a little chat with their employees about respecting customers, potential or otherwise, especially with two limb trimmers working in the NE Olympia neighborhood on 04/25/19 near Marion and Pine. This was my first interaction with a tree service in Olympia and it left a bad taste in my mouth. The conduct of Lukens' employees was enough to deter any potential sale with my wife and I. What people say and do while on the clock is a direct representation of the business they work for and I am not impressed. read more

Greg and his team did a fantastic job yesterday of taking down a few trees and cleaning up several others. I can see the sunshine and the smiles of special trees that don't have to work so hard to get to the light. The crew were easy to work with and made sure they were only cutting what I wanted and what would be best for my trees. After getting estimates from several other contractors, in the end I decided not to hire Lukens. The work would have created a lot of firewood, which I can't use. He would have cut up the logs into firewood length and left in my yard. I don't have space to store firewood, and don't burn wood, so that wasn't an option. Greg said he couldn't remove the wood without charging for disposal because he didn't have need or use for it and couldn't sell it. That put an already expensive job out of my price range. read more

This business is a joke. I called to have Lukens come out and asses the health of a large fir tree. As we were walking to the tree, Greg observed one plant of poison oak near the tree and almost ran away. He stated he was aware the area had poison oak in it but then turned around and blamed me for not informing him of this. I had no idea there was poison oak near the tree to begin with. You would expect a tree expert working in the Thurston County area for several years should have known this. The evaluation of the tree could have easily taken place without coming near the small area of poison oak but he just left me stranded and abruptly left. What a poor excuse for a business man. read more

I called Lukens Tree Preservation from a neighbor's recommendation. Greg was responsive from the start and came out to our property to meet with us to discuss a problem tree. The bid was fair and we asked to be put on his schedule. He came as scheduled and I was impressed from start to finish. My kids were fascinated too! He made the job look easy (even though I know it wasn't) and he and his crew left our entire deck and roof cleaner than when they started. I will definitely use them again for future work! read more
