Keith McNally opened the restaurant in 1980, and I've been going for over 15 years - usually for lunch or brunch. I typically order the Yellowfin Tuna Burger, which is outstanding, or the Odeon Burger, which is an excellent hamburger. Today, my partner and I went to brunch, and shared the French Toast and the Three Egg Omelet. The French Toast, as always, was superb - with a slightly crispy, caramelized exterior, and a rich, fluffy interior. Odeon uses brioche for its French Toast and it's always delicious! It had been awhile since I'd had the omelette. The server, who was very nice, asked if we wanted it cooked medium, medium well or well. For a second, I thought I was ordering a steak! I like my omelette cooked - I wasn't aware omelettes are now offered partially cooked. I cooked omelettes for a restaurant in 1972 while in college - I've cooked A LOT of omelettes. I like them light and fluffy - I only use butter - never oil, to cook them. I told the server that I like my omelette cooked through - not runny or 'creamy'. I ordered a veggie omelette with Gruyère cheese. It came very 'browned', and as a result, a little dry....and there was no cheese. Okay, one bite of the omelette had cheese - my partner and I shared - she had no cheese in her half. The fingerling potatoes were delicious and a nice change from French fries . I was disappointed but understood I probably should have been more specific about the 'well done' when ordering the omelette - and I understand, the cook sometimes misses an ingredient. I mentioned this to the server - she was very gracious, as was the Manager. They removed the charge from the bill. I felt bad mentioning it, but I'm a 'regular' customer and want to be helpful as I'll be returning. Making an omelette isn't 'rocket science' - they probably should cook them all the same - and change the order when the customer requests. I'll be returning and ordering both items again - this time, I'll give some specific input on the omelette!

The service was great and the restaurant itself has two floors of dining along with an outdoor rooftop. The complimentary pretzel bread was soft and warm and had great flavor. The appetizers were honestly great! The baby bok choy salad, while bitter had a tasty underlying flavor that made it worth it. The catch roll was good and the jalapeño was a nice touch. The crunchy rice cakes were a crowd favorite. The wagyu gyoza was good, but the weakest of the appetizers. For the entrees the branzino and truffle pasta were the unexpected stars of the show! The branzino was melt-in-your-mouth tender with an amazing flavor to it, while the pasta was rich and decadent with just enough truffle flavor to justify its naming. The steak was good but not a favorite among the party while the salmon felt a bit bland in comparison to the other dishes. We got a set of fries to accompany everything and they were good! We also got a lobster Mac & Cheese and while it was amazing, it was much more of just a lobster pasta dish than anything Mac & Cheese related. Both the sorbet and chocolate cake were ordered and both were enjoyed! The sorbet flavors were nice and tropical while the layered chocolate cake was delicious without being overly sweet. This was the first of the two decisions one has to make. The next was the entrée. I chose the Hanger steak. My wife, the branzino. The third option is a portobello mushroom dish, the fourth a burger. The food started with an amuse-bouche of broth from a French Onion soup and fresh bread served with soft butter and a ratatouille-like spread, moving on to an ample Champagne vinaigrette-dressed mesclun salad, which had large leaves of perfectly crunch lettuces, herbs, and other field greens. Then, began the unlimited service of simply excellent fries, taken straight from the fryer into a seasoning bowl and piled high into a wax paper-lined stand in the center of the table. Rounds and rounds and rounds of fries that are hard to stop eating. No ketchup. A stand of 6 sauces, from Au Poivre to Béchamel to an Aioli. The perfectly cooked mid-rare steak--better than some steakhouses I've been to came, and my wife's branzino, well seasoned, moist and with crispy skin (which I got ). Pleasantly gorged, we were finally served the berries and cream. Not too heavy and just the right amount of sweet. The only fault, my Cahors didn't come on time. The usually attentive staff didn't pick up on my looking around for the waiter. Half my steak was gone by the time it arrived. Still, it was a brilliant meal, in elevated environs. So when I heard about Golden Steer at One Fifth, bringing that legendary Rat Pack-era steakhouse spirit to New York City, I knew we had to experience it. I told the manager, SJ, that we had tried to get into the original Las Vegas spot--but we're so happy we ended up here! The location is beautiful, and the restaurant group did a fantastic job capturing that classic, old-school Vegas atmosphere while giving it a distinctly New York feel. From the ambiance to the service, it feels like stepping into another era--when dinner was an occasion, the steaks were serious, and Sinatra could very well have been sitting at the next table. SJ picked up on our frustration, she sent over two glasses of champagne to kick off our dining experience. While sippin' our bubbly, we started with a Golden Steer Dinner Salad and the Braised Spanish Octopus. The dinner salad was Red & White Endive with shaved honeycrisp apples and candied walnuts. This was a great salad, very large and tasted delicious. Braised Spanish Octopus, hat tip to the chef. Any octopus dish, my standard is Hellas in Tampa Bay. My mom is 1/2 Greek, this dish was better than grandmas and Hellas! Chorizo added to the dish, it added a little heat. I loved the two different balance of flavors. Now comes the star of the show, the Kansas City Cut steak. I also ordered a side of whipped potatoes. This isn't your aunts lumpy mashed potatoes. This was a creamy, silky side of potatoes. And my Kansas City Cut? Cooked absolutely perfectly with a beautifully seared on the outside, tender and flavorful on the inside. Exactly what you want from a classic steakhouse. This is how a steak is supposed to be done. Sinatra would approve. New York City has a few truly iconic steakhouses and what separates the great ones isn't just the steak, it's the hospitality. The hospitality we received from the moment we walked through the door was exceptional. The attention to detail, the warmth of the staff, and the way SJ and the team made us feel genuinely welcomed made the entire evening feel special. Great steak is one thing. Great hospitality is what makes you want to come back. Golden Steer at One Fifth delivered both and did it with the kind of classic New York style that would make the Rat Pack proud. I had written it off as another chain, and thought I might save it for when I'm in a small U.S. city and it's the best option in town. It's been years and this option hasn't materialized, so I finally made reservations, which were surprisingly hard to book. This place is well liked and popular. I was kind of surprised by the less than warm reception we received when I walked up to the host stand. They didn't say a word, just gave me blank stare and waited for me to speak. They seemed surprised that I had a reservation and seemed ready to tell me they were fully booked. Our servers were much warmer, and were nice about recommending a particular sushi roll, telling us the specials, and yes, replacing our martini glasses. I had read about how popular and well liked their sushi rolls were. My boyfriend expressed deep skepticism when I told him this, because he thought this was a classic American restaurant and that it would be a mistake to order sushi. But walking in we saw a large neon sign advertising their sushi and I pointed out how sushi was not only the first section of the menu but the largest one. When the server recommended the coconut shrimp roll, we decided to go for it. It was decidedly fine. It was wrapped in rice paper, which masked the fact that the rice was mushy and too sweet. My entree, which was the trout topped with crispy rock shrimp sounded delightful but was so salty to the point of being inedible that I didn't even finish it. My boyfriend thought his french dip sandwich was fine but not good enough to be memorable, and he also didn't finish it. The best bite I had was the spinach artichoke dip, which I have no notes on. The space is beautiful and we appreciated little details like that all the liquor bottles at the bar face the diners in the dining room so you can glance over at the bar and see what the selection is. And of course the martini glass trick was charming and I've read that many other restaurants have replicated this practice. I understand that people enjoy a place like Hillstone, a reliable place that maintains consistency, but the food was far too mediocre for this price point for me to justify return visits.
