This review is for the Deli, I was here to buy a lottery ticket, but wanted a sandwich it was early about 8:00 am I got a turkey ham and Swiss cheese on a soft roll with Everything on it. It was $9.99 which I thought was high price for a deli sandwich but it was delicious and fresh with lots of meat and veggies I couldn't be happier The girl who made it was friendly and engaging for a Monday morning. The parking lot looks like a third world country. There's run down RVs with people living in them. There's men in the parking lot stealing from cars. And today there was a man with a loudspeaker blasting the parking lot with nonsense and gibberish. The man is literally foaming at the mouth screaming at the top of his lungs. Don't shop here. Then I get a reply from management acting like they're completely oblivious to what's going on. That somehow they never see the parking lot right out in front of their building. There's nothing worse than an empty message trying to placate me. I would respect you if you had a modicon of integrity and admit the truth. Just visited here after Thanksgiving and saw the parking lot was finally repaved! The only reason why I'm keeping it to 4 stars because there was nobody watching the self checkouts. I used to work for the company and to my understanding, it's an obligation to have someone at self checkout at all times! I'm sorry to rant, but if you don't like your job, get a different one! I was at Lucky today and decided to do self checkout because there was a line at the one line with a checker. From the get go every time I put an item in the bagging area it would recognize it and then stop working and say "item removed from bagging area" so I would lift up the last item I added and put it down again. This worked the first few time but then stopped working. I looked over at the employee managing the self check out and ask her if she could clear it. She tells me in a snarky voice that it's because the self check out is only for 15 items and I have 21. So I tell her that I got 11 avocados and 3 cilantro to which she doesn't respond. And then I remember that it had been doing this since item number one so her explanation makes no sense. What happened to the customer is always right? There was no line behind me, where there was still a line at the one manned check out, and there was no reason to be so rude. read more

I've tried to give businesses a break since the pandemic, sometimes though you just can't. Went to get chicken after reading it's really good. Totally grossed out when the guy getting the chicken ( not wearing a mask) swipes his hand under his nose and proceeds to get the chicken. Ewwwww! Employees here seem like they'd rather be anywhere else. Most most wearing masks if they are they are under the nose so really why bother. I have shopped at this San Carlos Lucky store on and off for over 20 years. I have reviewed this store on Yelp unfavorably for years. For some unknown reason, corporate continues to ignore this store to fix the issues that have plagued the store for years. The complaint list is long but mostly at the top of this list are the unprofessional and untrained employees that work at this location. The Deli has been a disaster for years! One longtime deli employee NEVER greets a customer and practically ignores customers until you get their attention. She doesn't ask what you want... and she doesn't thank the customer afterwards. The checkers are no better. No greeting, they barely respond to questions and most of the time they are talking to coworkers and not paying much attention to the customers at all. Many times they are swearing out loud in front of customers about other departments or other coworkers. This has been going on for years! Courtesy clerks somehow are never available to bag and when I bag my own groceries the checker never thanks me for doing so. The list goes on and on to out of stock shelves and other inadequacies that somehow never plague other stores in this area at this level. San Carlos is a choice location. It's the only superstore in town, other than some of the smaller markets. Most of the time I end up going to Trader Joe's or Safeway instead. How many more years is corporate going to keep this store in its current state. It would be better to sell off this store to a competitor and then we may have a store in town that serves our needs! It's not a surprise to me that no one shops at this location (it's never busy) and that the Yelp review is 2.5 stars. The store is inconsistent at best. Some areas shine like produce but overall I wouldn't shop here if you are looking for a shopping experience that is at the very least competent. read more

Terrible customer service. I have always liked this store. Clean and organized. Went in today, bought some items through self service. I noticed I had paid twice for an item. My mistake. I go to customer service counter. Rude checker lady says there is no one available. I ask her what should I do, she says get in line. Her line which is long which is why I went to self service. I get in line and finally they open up another line. Male checker tells me he can't do refunds and sends me to customer service. I tell him the rude checker sent me to checkout line. He says he can't do refunds. I go to customer service and the manager gives me my refund. I tell him about my experience with the rude female checker and he says he will talk to her. This used to be my go-to Lucky's location. However, I don't think I will be returning. I went there around noon today to purchase a few items. there were 4 self-check machines at check out but only 2 were open. The employee who was supposed to help the customers at self-check was too busy talking to his coworkers about something nonrelated to work at all. There were 2 customers before me in the line with 2 having difficulty paying at the machine. No one helped. It took so long so I decided to go to the only open cashier. Guess what? The cashier guy, the guy who helped with bags, and the self-check worker were all super busy having their chitchat! They had no intention to help customers but just kept talking and laughing. There were other upset customers trying to express their feelings but they didn't care. I left and came back to customer service because there was a price discrepancy. No one was working at the customer service station. The guy at the self-check said: well you have to wait for someone to come. After a few minutes, the only cashier at #3 was yelling for his station: What's the problem? I said: wrong price, they said, you have to get in the line and wait. Then it was another round of waiting and hearing them chitchating. Oh well, I will stay away from this Luckys until they can hire something who's competent and has the right working ethic. read more

A big shout out to the bakery lady who baked the chocolate dipped macaroons. My husband spoke with the lady baker and she was very pleasant and she made the BEST chocolate dipped macaroons ever!!! The place is going downhill, badly. Very unhappy employees. Everything is overpriced. $10.00 for a box of cornflakes? When I commented to an employee about it "You don't have to shop here..go somewhere else.." Rotten apples in a bag..? Had to throw them away. Inedible. There are a few good employees, but they are overwhelmed. Scheduling issues. I haven't confirmed it, but was told that they will be closing in San Carlos. Others are closing their doors, including Blossom Hill in San Jose. Non producing locations? Really? I wonder why? There are other issues. I feel bad for the good, hard working employees but they are between a rock and a hard place. Self-Help counters are usually non-functioning, just like a few days ago. read more

I shop at Lucky all the time since it is right around the corner from me but many times the employees are not that friendly or helpful. I was in the store on Friday during the pandemic and asked 2 different employees where something was and was directed to the wrong aisle. I was in the store both Friday and today Easter Sunday and saw 2 different employees not wearing masks- one was in the bakery and the other was stocking on the floor. This is very upsetting since I am over 65 and shop for my 91 year old mother. I had a bad experience just trying to stop by and grab some lunch I got to the deli at exactly 12:30 so I stood àhere to be helped and no one will never help me everyone else that was helped came after me and they just looked at me so I said excuse me she wanted to help me but she called for the other guy I told her just finished helping the guy who you helping now but it's 12:48 I still ain't got no help less than three people online I felt like discrimination they just looked at me cuz I'm a young black lady as much I'm not too young I'm in my 40s but it's not right so I just left and said f*** Lucky's Bart my feminine products and got out of there this is one store I would never return to they have the poorest customer service ever read more

Not sure why all the supermarkets out here, save the upper crust ones like Lunardi's and Whole Foods, are pretty awful in the Bay Area. However, I'll take this place probably 9 times out of 10 over the Safeway in my neighborhood (the Jefferson Station one). Aside from the one pro-Trump tirade we got from a particularly rowdy cashier one night, overall, the staff does their job and does not make trouble for the customer or themselves. After getting major lip all the time from the staff at Safeway, I could use a leave-me-the-eff-alone shopping experience and this will suffice if I'm in a pinch. Pros: With a bunch of other businesses -- I guess we're at Home Depot a lot so I stop in here fairly often. Dollar Tree is also in this plaza. Some VERY good deals in the mail with free bottled water, free bagged salads, free ground beef, etc. Not chaotic. I don't have to feel my blood pressure spiking from buying groceries. Produce section has not failed me yet with freshness. Big enough selection of items, and things are appropriately in stock. Cons: Looks like the 80s never died here. Very dated looking and sorely needs a remodel or at least a dusting. Occasionally has few lines open, probably my fault as I visit at night close to closing most times. read more

Shop here off and on many years between trips on the road. One afternoon I was ahead of the line with a dozen customers waiting behind me. ( reminder with only one line) Bagger had more professional attitude telling the cashier we should call for help, the cashier response was "well they can shop at safeway if they like its down the road" I think we now realized whos going to clean toliets and the other will take his job! This review had nothing to do with the employees nor Covid. It has to do with the frequency of being over charged for items which is criminal. I've had as many as four items at one time being dollars more at checkout. And at least one item was muispriced on each of four trips this fall. And it's a waste of time for how long it takes to get someone at customer service to refund your money. And never with an apology! If it weren't that it's the closet store to me I'd have left them long ago. Have been coming here for years, but then noticed people walking in and out a lot without buying anything, just grabbing food bread rolls etc. Then I realized oh ok they are feeding the people hanging around outside. Four men where having a sit down pick nick near the shopping carts when we arrived Laughing and talking very happily, I thought what a strange site to have a pic Knick next to home depot and lucky son the sidewalk. So we go in to buy only a few items The ugly skinny white dude with the scraggly beard was super nasty, we asked about a high price, he says nothing free here, I was shocked, in big bold type is the price then down below in small print it says per lbs. We where just glad not to get got in this bait and switch. Many elderly shoppers or Moms would never notice. We only bought 3 items so I was very aware. Had to have the clerk open a new package and it was all dried out. Stood in line for 45 minutes with 2 checkers. I dont get it. I swear, the Bay Area really needs to step up their game when it comes to grocery stores. You'd think that chains would be just fine but I find myself thinking that most grocery stores in the Bay Area are just not that pleasant to shop in. The interior is clean, but it feels slightly dated and there is not that much variety in its stock (especially in produce). I also got back and found that the cheese I purchased had a sell by date of May 2015, and now it's well into June. I thought it was illegal for grocery stores to sell products by the sell by date? Sorry about all of those other reviews Lucky's... Here is a review that may improve your "Star Count" averages. I am going to give you 4 Stars with your Option to improve it to a 5 on this Review. I was in The SC Lucky's last Sunday to grab a couple of Bottles of Wine and some Kitty Litter. I had just grabbed the Wine and was on my way over to the Pet Aisle when Eureka! I spotted some Jars of "Small" Pacific Shucked Oysters. Manna from the Pacific Northwest! I love Oysters and do buy the Jolly Roger " Mediums" when I need a Fix. There are usually only 3 to 5 of those Beasts per Jar which I cut into 3 Pieces each to simulate "Smalls" or better still "Extra Smalls". Lucky's had The Pacific Seafood "Searock" Brand "Small" Oysters in the Cold Case. I grabbed two Jars because I knew that one would just not be enough. I was visiting my Mom in Tigard Oregon in February and found "Extra Smalls" in there Cold Case. I bought 3 Jars & my Mother and I enjoyed a great Mess of Pan Fried Oysters for Dinner that evening. Last night I prepared Oysters 2 ways. If I can figure out how to post some Pics to Yelp, I will. One Jar was made into some Sunny Select Panko Crumb Crusted PFO'S & the other Jar became a cross between Oysters Rockefeller & Florentine. I was in Heaven and the net result of my eating 16 ounces of Oysters made my Girlfriend pretty happy as well. Smalls cost more than Med's and Extra Smalls cost more than Smalls. Lucky's Seafood Buyers especially in our area here in San Carlos should understand that people will pay a little more the the Best in Quality! If you stocked Extra Smalls I would be your Best Oyster Buying Customer. Along with that I would Tell & Sell all of my Friends on Smalls and or Extra Smalls. I am pretty good at promoting Products that I like. Ask the Wine Buyer in San Carlos what has happened to the Sales of Concannon Vineyards "Crimson and Clover" Red Wine Blend in the last several Months... Though I had as yet to prepare the ones that I had bought last Sunday the 23rd I was ready to reload and get 2 or 3 more Jars for my Stash. Alas, they were out! I asked the Seafood Guy if they had anymore in the back. He told me no, but he thought more may be coming in next Week. I hope so to say the least. Throw the Dice and see if you end up having a hard time keeping "Extra Smalls" on the Shelf. A promotion with some Sunny Select Panko Crusted Pan Fried Oysters would blow a whole shipment of Oysters let alone a bunch of Tarter & Cocktail Sauces out the Door. Pair that up with a Wine Promotion and your "Star" Count averages on Yelp will be on the Climb. I and my Girlfriend Thank you for the high Quality Ingredients for such a Fantastic Meal last night! I had trouble with a Coinstar machine yesterday where it ended up eating my money and jamming the machine due to my own error of placing too many bills in at once. Jesus and Russ were extremely helpful in this process, showing compassion and sincerity in doing their best to remedy the situation. I called Russ, the store manager the next day to tell him about my situation and he jumped on it asap, turning what could've been a tedious process of waiting for a tech from Coinstar taking up to a week to getting it done the same day. He updated me on the dilemma the whole way through. The kiosk is a separate business entity altogether and it's great to see so much compassion and empathy being utilized here. This review is for their bakery dept. Went in and ordered a cake 1 week before the date that I needed it for. The girl who took down the order details did not speak English, so I had to help her fill out the order list, which was fine.. we were able to work it out and get the details correct. The day before pick up, I called the bakery to double check that the cake was still on schedule to be baked/picked up the following day. I made sure to go over the details with the RUDE woman who did speak English this time.. (half sheet, white cake, fresh strawberry filling, whipped cream, the colors and the message). Okay, got it. Picked up the cake the next day, and was immediately disappointed and frustrated at the aesthetics. The flowers and border were not only done so sloppy, they were covered in condensation. The face of the cake was 90% blank/white because the only color was up in the left hand corner with the 3 little jacked up flowers and leaves that they added, the borders were white, and for whatever reason, they wrote the message wayyyyy at the bottom in little kindergarten penmanship. I wanted to go off but I didn't want to be a b and I was pressed for time, so I just paid for it and left. Got to the party, cut the cake open to find that it was chocolate, not white like I ordered AND confirmed the day before. Luckily, the person who the cake was for, preferred chocolate over white, so again - whatever. Took several bites and thought to myself, this doesn't taste like the usual whipped cream frosting that they use but it has a familiar taste... it was COOL WHIP. Ridiculous! I have ordered cakes from other Lucky's stores in the past which always turned out fine. This was my first time ordering from the San Carlos store, but after this catastrophe, will also be my last. read more

This review is for the bakery, and specifically Baker Martha. If you want cakes made for any special occasion, please consider having them baked by Baker Martha at Lucky Supermarket San Carlos! Baker Martha bakes and decorates such beautiful cakes, she's our go-to for all of our family's cake needs. Martha is kind, polite, patient and just "gets it" with what we need for the specific occasion and delivers! Just one example is a 40th birthday cake we needed for a last minute surprise birthday party. We went in the day before (no other baker would ever agree to this!), explained what we wanted, showed her a picture and that was it. The 40th birthday cake (pictures below) turned out sooo good, and looked like a piece of art (we didn't even want to cut it, it looked so beautiful!). While picking up the cake we saw two others that Martha had prepared for a wedding- just as beautiful, literal pieces of art! Later we found out from other Lucky employees that Martha came in on her day off specifically for our cake so we could have a freshly baked and decorated cake for our birthday party! The workers there harass customers. It a very dirty and a low quality store with the same kind of people who shop there and work there. I was harassed by some of the workers there as they don't understand high quality customers. There is a black girl who works at the front Nana who is extremely abusive and followed me into the parking lot. I was in fear of what kind of violence she may do. She seems dangerous. She played some abusive stuff on her phone directed it at me while sitting eating. The manager Russ is so ineffective and low quality he didn't do much about it and defended her behavior and came at me as he was scared that his horrific management would be found out. read more
