Whenever I place an order at the deli, the worker named Jaime tends to make mistakes with every order. It's difficult to trust that I will receive the correct sandwich when he is working. It takes him 30 minutes to prepare two deli sandwiches, which would be acceptable if the sandwiches were made according to my original requests. Additionally, when he adds ingredients, I often receive very small portions, such as just two tiny onions... I'll not be returning to this deli as there are other businesses that offer better service and actually get my order correct. It's sad because luckys deli used to be once in good standing. Too bad. I started going to Lucky because the other major chain has become a sh*t show. Prices are about the same as expected. There was a huge turnover a year or so ago. The customer service has completely suffered. The last 2 visits (a week apart) one checker, long lines and the expected problems at self check. The sole checker had to come and clear my issue. The issue was cod, with an expiration date 3 days from purchase. As I was running it over the scanner I could smell the rancid fish. The lone checker had to come refund and go back to his long lines. Today, again one checker. Asked if I wanted paper or plastic. I said I brought bags. She finished my order, handed my receipt and went to the next customer. I guess it's my job to bag groceries? I usually help but this was solely me. Honestly! This place is awful. read more

I picked up a dog food here one Sunday night but realized once at home that it'd expired several MONTHS prior. Next day I was back to return my unopened bag, finding the checker, bagger and a third employee chatting leisurely round the sole open register, at which time not a single other customer could be seen in the store. I approached, interrupted their social circle to explain I'd purchased expired dog food there the previous night which I hoped to return or exchange. I realized then I had the wrong Lucky receipt in my pocket & offered to go grab the correct one from my car. First the checker asked me if I was sure I bought the expired bag there, elaborating that it was not likely as the week before they'd just gone through their pet aisle, end to end, to rid it entirely of any expired products. In explaining I had no doubts I repeated how it had been bought just the night before and for proof that my expired bag of dog food was purchased from that Lucky, less than 24 hours prior, I retrieved my correct receipt even though they'd said it wasn't necessary, as their instructions were for me to go ahead and just swap the expired bag out for a fresh bag. That sounded fine to me, after all, I still needed dog food. Alas, all remaining bags of the same brand, size & flavor I found on the shelf were ALSO well expired. I looked to the other flavors of same brand/size/price but sadly every one there had expired even earlier than the bag I was returning! Even the adjacent bags of the same brand/flavor in other sizes were expired. I finally found an acceptable replacement bag from another brand on sale marked down to the same price I'd paid for the original expired bag & brought it to the counter along with the bad news re: all those other expired bags I'd seen on the aisle. I just thought it funny they went out of their way to express disbelief at the possibility of my purchase of an expired item from that aisle, flexing that it was rid of all expired items yet the first 9 bags of dog food that I checked at were all expired. I might've given those guys three stars just for being easygoing but unfortunately, other times I've been to this Lucky I leave feeling genuinely perplexed and frustrated by the offensively nonsensical way my items get bagged. I am very intentional about grouping together items on the belt before they get scanned, groupings are like all frozen, all non-perishables all non-food items etc and furthermore I put everything within each group in order on the belt from heaviest to lightest to arrive to the bagger in an efficient way and hopefully facilitate the bagging process. In other stores I've found this to be a strategy that helps to ensure that even the laziest least intelligent baggers can avoid completely messing up the way that my items get packed. Yet despite these efforts at this store the bagger somehow scrambled items in a way that completely undoes everything I have tried to do and instead takes each item individually and holding on to it while they ask me questions about my experiences and opinions about the item before moving on to the next item and repeating the process. They manage to stack all heavy things on top of things like fresh fruit or bread or chips, and put harsh chemicals like cleaners with produce and baked goods, put frozen items with warm food and I bring my own bags, but it gets uncomfortable trying to argue with them to let me bag my own stuff and nonetheless. Ultimately, I end up having to stop at my car and repack every single bag before I drive home so that certain items don't get ruined in transit beyond the initial damage done by the bagging process. I still could've given them two stars but honestly, their muffins are always under baked and mushy and I always have to put them in the air fryer to their credit. They do taste good once you cook them fully, but I really think that baked goods sold to be eaten should be completely cooked when you buy them, but the dough seems fully raw on top. I read in the paper that the store also has been shut down more than once for pests and other health code violations which really rounds out my one star review I don't give one stars lightheartedly. I usually give the benefit the doubt, but despite giving them plenty of chances this place just is not the place you go for a great experience, something always seems to happen between entering and leaving that makes you wonder how they are still in business. read more

This review is solely on Lucky's fried chicken. Why go anywhere else?! I mean, it's really good. Need 250 pieces for a really big party? The folks at Lucky will get that ready for you on your pick up day and time for pre-orders. When we picked up our big order every piece was super hot, moist, and was a huge hit at our party. You can't go wrong feeding a lot of people with this and it really is tasty, not too salty or too much batter. Leftover fried chicken also heats up really well in your oven or air fryer. A bit of advice though...make sure you call the morning of picking up your order to make sure they get your order right. We initially ordered 250 pieces wanting to pick it all up by 4:00pm, but they mistakenly only had 150 ready by that time. We had to come back at 5:30pm to get our full order. But mistakes happen and thankfully they were able to get it all done in the next 1-1/2 hours. read more

Party Platters. I received an email a while ago promoting custom cakes and party platters so I used their easy online ordering system. For Fathers Day the cake I wanted for my husband could not be made in time so the bakery phoned me to let me know but also to allow me the opportunity to choose a cake they had available so I would not be without a cake. The party platters were fresh and delicious! My only feedback is I wish there was an option for organic crudités and fruit platters to start. Can you imagine organic free range chicken pieces and organic sandwiches with boars head nitrate and hormone free meats/cheeses? I say try organic fruit and veggies first and see how customers respond. The platters are so affordable and plentiful - I am grateful. I would pay more for organic My husbands birthday cake was such a hit! Again, the bakery phoned me, which I appreciate, to let me know the photo I uploaded with the order was not the right size. I had my daughter drop off a printout. The cake was excellent, everyone loved the photo and it was gone before I could have a slice. I recommend Lucky for their great party platters and custom cakes. While we aren't completely out of the woods with Covid, we can still have small parties with the vaccinated ones we love living under one roof. The staff and service good but "corporate's" decision to rearrange the store is nonsense. Why flip the location of all the aisles? It will not make me "browse" trying to find what I need. This just causes frustration as I noted in other customers also. Yesterday, I also noted that inside gates were installed apparently to deter or catch thiefs. Once again...the fried chicken sucks...especially if you order 4 legs & 4 thighs, you'll never get that order because the guy that works in the deli does not want to cook the chicken...no siree...you get whatever is under the heat lamp or nothing at all. They leave the chicken under the heat lamp all freakin' day so if you order it later in the afternoon/evening, they give you from 6 to 8 hours old chicken that is hard, crispy, dry and rubbery. They need someone in that deli that takes pride in their work and aims to do their best to please their customers. And someone with enough knowledge to know that you only keep fried chicken under a heat lamp for 2 to "maybe" 4 hours max. Well, I'm done with Lucky's and certain deli workers there. Yesterday Lucky's had power because Lucky's prepared ahead of time knowing that PG&E was going to cut power to their store. Today I'm here again, they have a huge truck that delivered ice this am. My sister and I drove around today we thought we would check Safeway to see if the Starbucks was open. Safeway was sparingly open. All dark but but a checkstand. No ice, and only dry goods being sold. Lucky's however, stepped it up. Today they made an area open for their customers to plug in your devices to charge. I'm asking my community to please rethink when you do your grocery shopping. Lucky's rented high capacity generators to stay open to serve their community. I will always continue shopping at Lucky's. It takes me 3 more minutes to drive there but it took Lucky's over $20K to open their store for their community. read more

They consistently had big trucks of ice delivered in the mornings and they stayed stocked with food. They even had a charging station set up so customers could charge their phones. Some might say that I like grocery shopping, but I mean really, who ACTUALLY LIKES grocery shopping? But what I do like about grocery shopping is due to this Luckys. The flyer that comes in the mail is also online (plus I get it emailed to me which serves as a nice reminder that I need to make my list) and that makes comparing stores (gasp! I'm not even sure why I still do this bc they almost always win) super fast and easy. Once I make my list the shopping part is pretty easy. Their in stock item list is super reliable and they keep items together in the same isle every week, unlike some other stores that make me feel like they should hand out a treasure map to help me find my way around. "13 paces from the bread to the peanut butter and then 6 left hops to the jelly." The staff is friendly and the check out lines run pretty smoothly. Sometimes you do get that one person in front of you that holds up the line somehow, or sometimes the register breaks down, but that's life and I think we can all deal with it a little. The last plus is that once I did have a problem...with my bill. I had been rung up incorrectly, really incorrectly. I didn't know if it was the cashier or the machine, but I emailed through the website. Corporate contacted the store and the store contacted me, and they really worked for it too. I mean at first they couldn't get a hold of me so we were playing phone tag, but they didn't give up, which was nice. In the end they fixed the problem and were 100% nice while doing it. read more

He'll go the extra mile to answer the phones or do a product search for customers; probably because he knows everyone else is too lazy or incompetent. The bakery department gets 1 star for showing up for work. The bakery manager is rude and shouldn't manage anything dealing with customer service. Her staff are clueless probably because there's no communication between her and her staff. The deli department gets 2 stars for being borderline clueless. It's surprising that there is barely any wait just after lunch hour when getting a sandwich made here, even after Subway next door has closed down a month ago. Yet when I go to Safeway (or I should say when I use to go there to pick up my meds with more wait in line), they would be swarms of people waiting in line to get their sandwich made. I had their deli meat sammie before and it's not as high quality nor does it taste as good to justify the wait imho. Same goes on their extremely salty fried chicken at the hot food area. The fried chicken at Lucky are not too salty and is quite good actually. Now I'm just not saying that cause I do get a piece once in a while. And the fries are those big battered fried wedges that would put KFC to shame but they are only good when hot out of the friar, NOT when it's sitting in the heater for awhile ~ trust me (I recommend sampling this first before buying). On the chicken, it's good even if it's sitting in the warmer for hours and if they do go over the top in making it salty, they would label it as such like their salt and vinegar fried wings. Now I haven't tried any sweets at the bakery here (need to watch what I eat lol) but their handcrafted donuts looks good and a dozen for 7 bucks plus change is good value compare to donut shops. As far as value are concern, the deli prices at Safeway wins barely but is it all about getting the cheapest made deli sandwich in town or something?? It seems ironic considering Marin is one of the most expensive county to live in by far. I do understand convenience is a big factor and Safeway do have more items variety and selection in the grocery department which is what probably comes down to it, if you don't mind the wait. Once I broke my brainwashed self from all the useless bells and whistles that crowd the aisles at both Safeways (seriously, I do not need a Jamba Juice, Starbucks, and never-patroned flower department in any grocery store!), I found myself shopping here more and more in between my major Costco runs. Nowadays I show up here for organic produce, sparkling water, and random condiments. I tend to shop here on the nonpeak hours, usually in the morning or before the 5 PM crowd hits the store like a soccer mom invasion. The store usually has well-stocked aisles and its produce lasts for over a week. I find the organic produce prices are pretty reasonable, too. Today I came in here to begin some of the shopping I need to do for Thanksgiving. They had gravy on sale and Italian hot sausage links for reasonable price. I picked these items up in addition to some delicious grapes and Brussels sprouts. I also was on the lookout for fresh cranberries and some bread crumbs for my stuffing. When I was ready to leave, I was glad they still have the three is a crowd rule. As I pulled up my cart to the check out I was steered over to a new checkstand and quickly helped. My only disgruntlement with many chains like this is the self checkout lines. I always go to a cashier. I want to ensure that they keep their jobs and that machines don't cheapen or frustrate the experience. Human contact is still very important to me. Everyone in the store that I've met has been friendly, courteous, and helpful. The store may have a somewhat outdated interior design but it is the workers and the prices that keep me coming back. read more

Never ever ever again!! Whoever is managing the store should be fired immediately. I went in today to pick up a few staple items. I try to avoid lucky because there's always a problem. I put apples, bananas, iced tea, and rice cakes in my cart. When I went to self check, I forgot after having paid for everything else, that I never paid for the iced tea. I put the iced tea up on the counter to do a new sale and self check. When I went to put my debit card in, all the bells and whistles went off and it said "you cannot use the same card in the next transaction!" Why the hell not??????? Would they rather me steal it or not buy it? Of course the second thing is what I decided. I just left it there and called the woman over so that I wouldn't be double charged. This store is bizarre. There are usually a bunch of people working in the store, but no one even acknowledges the shoppers. The last time I was there, I watched three employees stand around near the milk and complain about their jobs. There were abandoned carts in the middle of aisles, and the workers just ignored them, leaving them to block all of the other carts belonging to current shoppers. When I went to pay, not one employee was at at register. I do not mind using the self checkout, but there should be at least one register open. Lastly, they have really weird displays. I've since moved from Novato a while ago. I don't know if I'm biased or what, Lucky is my goto supermarket. I can usually find what I need here because Safeway never has the items I truly want and I refuse to settle. Customer service I get it, I do it all day long. They have some questionable employees here. Meaning if you are not of the right skin colour, they think you may not need assistance, they watch you instead. I shopped here today and, just because my tan may have been a little too dark. The young guy, who was working the meat department refused to acknowledge me. It was strange how he said hello and acknowledged all of the people of a more fair skin tone than mine. It's ok because not everyone is customer service oriented or have knowledge that you don't judge because of skin tone, you treat everyone the same, even if you are judging at that moment. I will continue to shop here because, I am attached to this store and as I said earlier, I am biased when it comes to Lucky. The management needs a serious ethics meeting. read more

Ok, yes this is a grocery store so you may ask, why the 5 stars? This is why. Several days ago we had a county wide blackout imposed on us by PG & E. Of the several grocery stores in Novato that were either closed, or open with a limited selection of products, Lucky's showed up for it's customers, and they showed up big time! They were the only place I could find ice, and not once, but a day or two later they had more to sell. They were one of the few stores selling dairy, lunchmeat and hot food along with graciously allowing people to come in to use their limited electricity to recharged their devices. I tend to rotate where I shop sometimes just for a change of scenery. I never thought I would be so impressed with this Lucky location! Every staff member always asks if they can help me find something and is more than willing to guide me in the right direction. While the produce department could use more help - I think it's because people don't stop in as much as other stores.... The meat department is always attentive! The bakery department is our favorite - of course my son loves their chocolate donut with sprinkles or mini m&m's! Their donuts are probably the best I've had. I love the density and chewy-ness of it - it's perfect! And my husband agrees too and he's a donut fanatic! We will always be stopping in! read more

I actually like this Lucky store. But the self checkout section is not properly staffed. Today I was stopped needing some sort of override as was another patron. The staff member watching the self check was also doing the cigarette duty. After waiting way too long, including chatting with the other patron stalled I walked out leaving my groceries behind. Safeway is not as convenient but they staff the self checkout aisles properly. My suggestion get rid of the cigarettes as that seems to be the biggest issue. read more
