This is a rating for the bakery dept only! The bakery dept consistently does excellent work on their cakes! I have zero complaints. I used to order all of my cakes from Safeway on Contra Costa Blvd but no more! I have gotten specialized Cars 2 cakes, with the mini and quarter for my son's birthday... for my dad's birthday, an 8 inch with his face on it! For my graduation a red velvet that was decorated SO well with EVERYTHING I wanted! The spelling is always right... the cakes are always moist and everyone always raves about the cakes! I have recently observed that Lucky Market, here in Martinez, has been placing advertisements, online and in "snail mail" adverts/flyers for discounted items that suddenly seem to no longer be available ("Sold Out") when actually shopping for these items at their store during the dates that they specify. I have observed a significant increase in this particular "tactic" within the last two years (I experienced myself this morning @10am when shopping at their store for advertised keto salmon - "sorry, Sold Out" I was told, but plenty of far more expensive fish available). This seems deceptive, almost "bait & switch," if you will. I have personally experienced this said "tactic" on far too many occasions recently. No. Nope. I've shopped here twice and both times I bought an item that was expired. The first time, it was a salad dressing that I went back to exchange. I looked at the bottles to find a non-expired one, and such a thing *did not exist.* I let the customer service clerk know, and he genuinely did not seem to care. The second time, it was an expired pack of juices. I'm probably not going to die from consuming either one of these past the expiration date, but if they're messing up such a basic function of a grocery store, then what else are they ignoring? Lucky's has drastically remodeled their store in Martinez .New floor ,layout and all glass cases thru out. Just bought Dungeness crab at $4.99 a lb. Deli shines new salad bar .and all types of ethnic foods ready to take out. For a great sandwich made to order, bread, meats veg. you can't beat the price ($5.99) and top quality. Deli manager greets you with a smile and makes the best sandwich par none. read more

Please teach your employees on service animals. Only because my service animal does not have a vest. Does not mean it's not a service animal!!! A service animal does not need a vest that says service animal on it! Anyone can get those online!!! I visited the store and it was well stocked. The employees were very friendly and helpful. There are so many employees at this store. They were willing to help pick out cakes and even went out of the way to get fresh seafood for us. The service at the meat counter was great. You just ring the bell and someone comes running to help you out. There is even an organic produce section. I even found Brown Cow yogurt and Wallaby Australian style yogurt. This store even features La Brea Bakery artisan bread. They even barbecue fresh food right at the store. It looked really great. The store was busy for a Friday afternoon, but they called 3s A Crowd and suddenly more cash registers opened. The employees are very good at helping you get through the checkout fast. There is even a Bank of America ATM inside. P.S. the review by Michael B. is a quite a story. I saw no birds living in the supermarket and I did not meet any hostile employees. Hands down, the worst, most miserable supermarket in the area, and maybe the worst I've ever been to. Every employee I have had the displeasure of interacting with is rude, unfriendly, unhelpful, and slow. The store actually had a bird nesting in the roof/signage above the bakery area last year! I called the health department and since then, no more birds inside... The self-checkout is a joke, since the employee that is supposed to be monitoring this is usually wandering off somewhere, while customers have to stand there waiting for someone to clear some machine error or approve a beer purchase. I live just a few blocks from this store, but I make the drive over to Nob Hill every week to do my shopping. A little more expensive perhaps, but worth it for a much nicer shopping experience, and MUCH better employees. read more

I think the only reason why Lucky can survive is because it's the only grocery store in like a 2 mile radius (if you don't count Walmart)... which is shocking, because I thought when I moved here that there certainly would be more places to choose from. Then again, I've been spoiled by Safeway, Trader Joe's and Fresh & Easy right around the corner when I used to live in Walnut Creek, so Lucky's was my only choice. The ups: close to home and open late. The downs: EXPENSIVE! And whenever I've gotten produce here, it's just been weird. Or smelled/tasted funky. I'm sure that has to do with whoever they outsource from, but still. I've had funky brussel sprouts and some weird kabocha squash. Deli section has much to be desired. I bought a pre-made salad for $4 and it was nothing special, and mostly lettuce. And the main reason: EXPENSIVE! I know i said this already, but eggs are $1-$2 more expensive than Safeway. I mean, come on. You're not even a brand new, clean, sparkly store where you can justify the costs. You don't even have hand-drawn tags or murals painted on the walls greeting customers. Let's be real: you're kinda dirty and ghetto. Get with the program. My laziness cries out when I think about venturing elsewhere (Concord, Pleasant Hill, or maybe even Walnut Creek) for groceries... but I'd gladly pay a little more (or, rather, Lucky's prices) for quality, locally-grown vegetables at Pleasant Hill Market or the Farmer's Market or Trader Joe's, or even Fresh & Easy 13 miles away. read more

So, this place is in a convenient location, yes but thats about the only thing thats good. It is kinda run down, there has definitely not been any re-models lately but they could use it. The last time I went in there I only need 3 or 4 items so I went to look for a hand basket. I searched all up and down the front of the store and couldn't locate one. I went to one of the cashiers and said, "Do you guys have any..." and before I could even finish my sentence she said "We only got 5 and I guess they're all bein' used." I've been shopping here for years this store gets no stars from me. Or well one star because that seems to be the minimum I can give it. I have never worked with a managerial staff that cared less about customer requests than this store. When I asked them to carry a basic item like Standard avocado oil, one of the managers insisted I needed to go find a bottle of an avocado oil at another store bring it in so he could scan the barcode. THEN he would see if he might be able to get that item but no guarantees. You are a grocery store Manager this is your business don't you have suppliers?why should I have to go find a product and bring it to you on the off chance that you might be able to actually get that product? there's plenty of companies that carry avocado oil - go source it! These folks are either very lazy or they have an extremely messed up ordering system. The store is also ugly and poorly laid out and it needs a major remodel it looks like it's still stuck in the 50s. Avoiding Luckys more and more and only going there in an emergency. read more

Lucky's has been out of my grocery store for rotation for a few years now just because I moved away from the area, but when I popped in on a Sunday afternoon to grab a few items for the upcoming week, I was for the most part pleasantly surprised. The store is as bright and spacious as I remember, and I was surprised to see their prices beat Safeway's on various items by quite a bit. What they don't seem to have, unless I missed it, is as many good quality store-brand items, and their organic produce section was quite small. My cashier was very nice also but when chatted up the woman in front of me in line who was commenting on their Three's A Crowd policy, he went into a rather long explanation of why this is obsolete, how management, etc. are working them as understaffed as possible. In general it wasn't an informative or friendly conversation, it felt more like this customer hit on a sensitive topic and in return got an earful. It's never comfortable to listen to store employees trash their managers to your face, whether they deserve it or not. Our feet and our dollars are your job security, so be careful what you say, no matter how good your intentions. So a mixed experience. While I won't go out of my way to shop there, it's good to know some bargains can be found. read more

I do the bulk of my grocery shopping here. The prices are usually good and the quality is fairly good most of the time, as normal per most large grocery chains. This store is fairly typical of the Lucky's chain. Each and every store is laid out almost the same so its not a big trial to get used to if you are coming from a different location. The staff is friendly and courteous. I have no idea what Michael B is talking about myself. The store is also cleanly and I saw no sign of any infestations of any wild-life. I will not give this place a 5 star rating, however, mainly due to the sporadic quality of their produce and meat sections. However, its not too bad. Its just not Whole Foods or Trader Joes quality. read more

I live right near by, and sometimes I go here if I just need a quick couple of items, but almost never purchase any meat here, because the thought of it makes me a little nauseous. The staff seems really depressed, and I dont blame them. They work in the ugliest, smelliest grocery store of all time. It smells like luke warm water, leaking from a plastic bag of old fish. There have been a number of times in the past where I bought something here, brought it back home and realized it was spoiled or expired. The layout of the store is one of the ridiculous I've ever encountered. First of all, if you just want a basket instead of a cart (which normally I do because like I said I rarely go on big grocery trips here), you have to walk from the entrance to the opposite side of the store to get a basket from the self-checkout station, BECAUSE THATS FOR SOME REASON THE ONLY PLACE WHERE THOSE ARE KEPT. I mean, it would make sense to just have a stack of baskets near the entrance of the store like every other store that ever existed, right? Lots of other weird layout issues as well, but i'll leave it at that. The self-checkout station, by the way, is one of those super frustrating ones where nothing works and you basically have to wait for the attendant to fix problems/glitches constantly. Lots of seedy characters roam the aisles here as well, toothless mouth breathers and whatnot. Little creepy. I wish this was just a Trader Joes since theres already 3 safeways near by. read more

I usually do not come here, but when I do it is ALWAYS busy with REALLY long lines, that includes the self-check out. There are always like 2-3 registers open, and the lady that always works when I am going through the self-check-out line is super slow when people get stuck on using the machine. The vibe I get here seems pushy, there are trashy people that come shop here, and I do not know why. The staff in the back however (not the registers), are super nice. The ones that restock the floor, or walk around putting things away or back in the meat section always help you out if you have a question, super friendly. A lot of the times they give out samples of a product in the back end of the store, for example an ice cream bar they are promoting. read more

Lucky's is a five minute drive from my house. Nob Hill is about twenty minutes. I have learned that going to Lucky's might save time on the drive but certainly not in line, products or service. No more than three in a line is a joke. Over the weekend I was fourth in line and waited in that line for ten minutes before moving to another line. The entire time the cashier kept calling for assistance but was ignored. When I finally moved to the other line, I was stuck behind two WIC moms (with their designer purses, fake nails, diamond rings and gold chains) and a cashier who didn't know how to process their freebie checks. The cashier was also had her hands wrapped up in bandages so was moving very slowly. I was another ten minutes in line here! I spent fifteen minutes picking up a few items and twenty minutes in line! Is this a one time experience? Nope. It is every time. One cashier even told me that the three in line offer is a joke because they don't have enough staff to open other registers. Besides this, their produce isn't the greatest. Rotten tomatoes anyone? Flies in the produce department? They also don't carry common items. Carpet freshner? You carry lobster but not carpet freshner? Which do you think sells more? Their self check out lines aren't any better. The machines constantly lock and need a cashier to clear them. I've repeatedly seen lines 15 people deep in self check! I've also noticed a significant number of meth addicts in this store. One started screaming at me because I wouldn't give up my case of soda. There were dozens of cases of the same soda on the shelves but she HAD to have mine. Did security assist me? What security? NEVER AGAIN! read more

I do not normally shop at this store but since I was in the area, I decided to. I'm pleased I did! I fully expected to spend $250 this trip. Imagine my surprise when my bill with tax was only $188. According to my receipt, I purchased 50 items. That included - 4 bottles of wine, a case of beer, 7 boxes of Kellog's cereal, lunchmeat, milk, eggs, butter, 2 - cookie dough packages, 2 - 24 packs of Pepsi, 2 liter bottle of rootbeer, 6 1/4 lb pork roast, 3 bags of Colombo sandwich rolls, plus many more items. The employees were all very helpful. The checker was pleasant to my children. Even though it was late and cold, the bagger had no problem taking my groceries to my car and loading them up for me. Considering I saved more than I thought possible, I'm sure I will be doing my shopping at Lucky's instead of Safeway! read more

I rather, go out of my way to grab something I need here than drive to the SAFEWAY that is close. I like the they have what I need. It is an older store but the produce is still good, better at the PH location. SAFEWAY has lost my business for the most part. I still go to the Alhambra location for items, but rarely. Wondering why the three handicapped spots for Lucky shoppers are on far side of store parking lot where it is sloped and uneven, yet the EV charging stations are in the more level choice front and center area. Are there really more EV owners that are dumb enough to leave home without a full charge and must charge their cars everywhere they go? Even the darn grocery store? This location is clean and I go here instead of other grocery stores in the area because they are cheaper. With that being said, the lines are OUTRAGES. When are they going to get the clue that you need to hire more staff. You should not have to stand in line for 30 minutes to get your groceries. I have purchased 2 1lb. portions of pre packed ground beef in the past month. On both occasions I found brown ground beef in the centre with fresh ground packed around. On my following visit I asked the butcher why I found brown beef in the centre and he told me it is common for the beef to turn brown when contacted by air. With that ridiculous response, I realise Lucky's California, Martinez meat department is packing old brown beef with fresh. This practice is dishonest as it appears the butcher is hiding old brown beef with new. I ask this question: 'How is it possible that beef packed in the centre turn brown before the beef packed outside'? read more

Judy always greetts me she remembers my name which is pretty cool since my name is really hard to remember. This store is conveniently close to home but the customers service is not good . We go about 3 times a week and nobody is ever helpful or nice but the other day my husband asked the lady at the deli for a few things and she said she had already cleaned her machine so she wouldn't do it was 8:30 the deli closes at 9:00 I nicely said something about it to the cashier and she completely blew me off I understand we all want to get home but that's ridiculous. read more

Holy cow thank god i decided to stop here and check Luckys out. I live in martinez and safeway is super close to my house so ive been going there for the past year. I hate the safeway by me, produce is ALWAY ALWAYS rotten, ive had a pomegranate seeded cup open itself from being expired when i had JUST bought it the night before, just being one of the many incidents (they do refund you if you have time to do so). Anyways back to Luckys, produce was good, i felt like i was eating fruit for the first time ever. what a differance!! When i asked to be pointed in the right direction to find a specific item i was not given the vibe as if i was inconvienencing them but actuallu walked with me to insure i found what i was looking for which is what is the norm these days. I've shopped (and it will continue to be past tense) at Lucky's off and on for quite a few years. However the last few times I shopped it wasn't a positive experience. With the Exception of one Young Lady, the staff is not particularly friendly and my last experience was 'It' for me. The checker accidentally canceled my entire order, I found this out when I asked why he was ringing everything twice, he informed me that because 'I' had interrupted him he somehow deleted my order. My 'Interruption's' were asking about prices on items that were not in the correct section or just didn't have a price. While reviewing my receipt some of the items were more expensive than I thought. I went back in and the young lady called the Manager. I told him these items were to much, and I wanted to return them (While thinking had the checker listened to my questions I wouldn't have had to go through this) so he starts scanning the items, the first one had a coupon that was supposed to have been used, and the Manager asks me "Who was the Bad checker that didn't use this?" then he closes out the transaction. I told him I still had two items, after a huffy sigh he grabs and scans the other two items, and says "I thought you said this was to much Money?!?!" "Its only a couple of bucks!" (it was actually $14, which for cosmetic items in the wrong section seemed like to much. read more

I thought I would run in grab 12 items and run out quick, of course I was wrong. I get to the checkouts two lanes are open with 2 to 5 people in each lane and as usual they aren't moving at all. I go to the self checkout and start checking out my items as usual multiple items don't scan correctly and I have to hand code them in. So I'm now doing the checkers jobs but getting no discount for it . I get all my items bag which again I'm doing a courtesy clerk job and not getting paid for it And it gives me an error message that I removed an item from the bagging area put it back I didn't so I have nothing to put back. I then try to remove the bag and put it back and I now get another error message that says item removed from the bagging area please put it . There's no way to just pay at this point and I have no items to put back so I'm stuck. The person who watches over the self check outs is nowhere to be seen and I'm standing there with my young son who is very impatient at this point . After standing around for a few more minutes unable to pay with my son and absolutely no help from the staff I had enough left my bag and walked out. This store have the worst service of any grocery store I've ever been to in my life. And I don't think it's the staffing levels I think it's the staff. Slow and in efficient on an average day with very low customer traffic. I get the distinct impression that the checking staff doesn't care . It's a shame because the meat department and produce department do a good job and for the overall size of the store it's pretty well stocked. But with that said and the fact that the store is a block away from my house I will now be going to either Nob Hill and paying more money or the Safeway by Sun Valley Mall which rocks. If Lucky's cares and I don't think they do they need to do a huge customer service training for this store and get new management staff who correct these problems . My mom and dad each worked for over 30 years for Lucky's, so when it comes to this establishment I'm a bit of a softy. Unfortunately, the company has changed and no longer treats the employees the way they used to, and I can see it every time I walk through the store. Simple shit, like the small hand held baskets for the "lite" shopping experience, why do I have to walk to the check stands to get one? Why can't they be placed near the entrance where people would actually expect to find them? How about the freakin' self checkout area, maybe 50% of the time there is an employee there to fix the annoying "unexpected item in bagging area" error at the checkout machine? So pretty much think gateways always better than lucky, but I am taking it out on this specific location because it is closest to my house. They are overpriced, their produce and meat just doesn't seem quite as good.
