I'm shocked about the good reviews and sadly disappointed. Can't even finish my drink. I ordered an iced white mocha latte with light ice. It literally tastes like milk. It might have been a one off because it seemed pretty crowded, with a cute patio to work at. Even my bf was disappointed with his cortado, essentially an espresso shot with barely any milk. Looking for a little escape from lockdown, I was fortunate enough to do some beach camping in Carpinteria. As I usually do when traveling, I wanted to try a non-chain based coffee house. I was fortunate enough to find Lucky Llama Coffee right before they closed at 2pm. It's important to note that Lucky Llama is taking the proper precautions for it's patrons and employees with it's covid-19 protocols. Masks are obviously a requirement but they also limit the number of customers in at a time. Then the orders are called out and picked up at tables just under the doors (so there's no waiting inside). Fortunately Lucky Llama has generous outdoor seating for all to enjoy. Now for the coffee; it was still a relatively warm day so I went with the iced Mayan mocha. The drink was smooth and satisfying. Additionally, the "Mayan" portion of the drink was perfectly balanced with chocolate and spice. Highly recommend! Parking is ample in their lot along with parallel parking right next to the shop. So regardless if you're staying in Carp or just passing through the 101, stop by Lucky Llama Coffee. It's well worth the visit. read more

Stopped by here on a day trip to the Santa Barbara area. COVID conscious set up was good - there were also outside tables available for seating with lots of space between them. The oat milk latte (I believe they use Oatly) was great - if I lived nearby, I'd grab this coffee all the time. Cute little coffee shop for regular visits or a stop as you're driving by. A very popular coffee shop in Carpinteria and probably the best one in town. Great drip coffee with both light and dark roasts served, my wife and I tried the dark yesterday and came home with a box of the light one this morning =D A variety of food and baked goods are available as well with a pumpkin chocolate chip scone being honestly the best scone I've ever tasted - incredibly fresh, the delicate crust broke away to a spongy soft interior loaded with melted chocolate chips. So did not see this one coming! With COVID precautions and allowing only one party in at a time to order, one can imagine how long the line gets, so come early if you can. As for service, it was fine and, as others have noted, not the warmest with some staff nicer than others. read more

With a line out the door, I was eager to try this spot! After waiting a little (not unpleasant at all), I ordered a Moon Bowl and a Iced White Mocha with oat milk. The iced white mocha was flavorful and the barista was fast and kind. The Moon Bowl was HUGE and the granola and actual açaí was delicious (along with the toppings). Great price and had the bowl with me on the beach and it lasted as a snack all day! Overall, a must stop by for a fresh and delicious açaí bowl! read more

My kids and I needed to wait around for a bit for my husband to pick us up. They were hungry so I decided to let them each pick a pastry here while we waited. The staff (and even other customers) were all so friendly. So sweet to my kids when they had questions and wanted to place their own orders. We never felt rushed at all. The croissants were so good... flaky, buttery and fresh! We enjoyed the atmosphere, especially the outdoor seating area. And my kids loved being able to say hi to every dog that came near us. Tasty, cute, central-location. Lucky Llama Coffee is adorable. It's in the middle of the little downtown Carpinteria area, although next to a grassy field with a lovely, large tree. The tree even has a plaque! Carpinteria is so cute. I had the Mexican mocha, bagel, and an açaí bowl. I liked all of them. I personally prefer a more intense flavor to Mexican mochas- more spice, more bitter chocolate. But it was good. The bagel was a touch undercooked. The açaí bowl was very fresh and tasty. I enjoyed seeing the locals mingle on a Sunday morning. Overall a lovely experience. read more

This is a quaint little coffee shop off the road. They have quite a few outdoor tables to sip your coffee at and relax. There are a few tables inside as well. They serve Dune coffee which is one of my favorites. The barista was a laid back guy who made our coffees with care. We were on a short trip to Carpinteria, and wanted something other than hotel coffee. I got the Mayan Mocha based on other Yelp reviews and it did not disappoint! I'm confident in saying it was the best mocha I've ever had. I can't put my finger on what the spices were, but it was delicious. I also ordered the jalapeño cheese bagel which was so good. My father was wrapping up his extended visit to California and he wanted to talk to me face-to-face, so we met for coffee and an açaí bowl at Lucky Llama in Carpinteria. Going out in public is no easy task for Dad because he suffers from agora-claustro-triskaidekaphobia, which is the fear of being in a confined space with precisely thirteen other people. The open, outdoor eating space at Lucky Llama is very pleasant and helped him manage his phobia. Dad is a musician and played the claves (aka 'rhythm sticks') and cowbell professionally for many years. He was recognized by Downbeat magazine as one of the top sixty-three best claves players of all time. The pinnacle of his success was being featured on Barry White's 1974 megahit "Can't Get Enough of Your Love (Baby)." You can hear my Dad's unmistakable and distinctive rhythmic contribution throughout. In fact, if you close your eyes it's all you hear. Dad made himself comfortable in the outdoor seating area at Lucky Llama while I ordered a drip coffee for him, a Cortado for me, and a Jupiter Bowl with açaí, bananas and mangos topped with strawberries, coconut and tasty almonds. The split-bowl charge is one dollar. Although he was far from a traditional influence in our lives, Dad has always been a hero to me and my siblings. He even dressed the part. He kept (and still keeps) his claves ensconced in a fanny pack affixed around his waist like Batman's utility belt. Unlike Batman, he wears a stylish and reinforced 24-carat gold bracelet on each wrist that can be used to connect the ends of his claves - thereby converting them into a set of martial arts nunchucks. We're not entirely sure why he modified his claves in that way, but in the 1970's, as Dad often reminds us, everybody was kung fu fighting. Dad really isn't a danger to anyone unless someone calls his beloved claves "sticks." When that happens, there's a pretty good chance that he might throw one of them at you, or quickly assemble his nunchucks in anticipation of a showdown. He's still as temperamental and proud as he is talented. Assembling his nunchucks now takes about 45 minutes, however, due to Dad's advanced age and increasingly arthritic hands. Lucky Llama offers great Dune coffee choices and the best açaí bowls in the area. As a bonus, the outdoor seating area is located beneath the canopy of one of the largest and most beautiful Torrey pines I've ever seen. Dad was visiting California to let me and each of my siblings know in person that the royalty checks from his disco-era hits were drying up and he could no longer afford the $50 that he sends each of his children and growing number of grandchildren on their birthdays and for Christmas. I let Dad know that we were proud of him and he needn't worry about taking care of my siblings and me, mostly because we were all now nearing or well into our fifties and supported families of our own. I suggested that he save that money, take a trip, or use it to buy a new set of sticks. Sticks. I immediately tried to take it back and rightly call them claves, but it was too late. Dad didn't hear anything I said after "sticks." He instinctively, and without success, attempted to remove one of his gold bracelets no matter how much I quietly tried to calm him. Eventually I just settled in, sipped my Cortado, and checked email on my phone. I had at least 45 minutes before I needed to be concerned for my safety. The Cortado was perfectly balanced and delicious. I recommend ordering the Cortado in a glass Gibraltar cup when possible; it just tastes better. After Dad tired himself out, he returned his claves to their holster, had a long sip of his coffee, and admitted aloud that Lucky Llama's Jupiter Bowl was extraordinarily fresh and delicious. As we left Lucky Llama and headed for our cars, Dad gave me a hug and slipped me twenty bucks for the coffees while insisting that I 'don't tell' my brothers. Old habits die hard. Dad is learning how to deal with the changes associated with his inexorable transition into his twilight years. I'm learning that superheroes may not be able to stop time in its tracks, but they can hold it at bay for a while in a 3-2 time signature with a distinctly Afro-Cuban beat. We stopped by Lucky Llama Coffee to refuel on our way home from Santa Barbara Monday afternoon. It was a cute, happening little coffee shop in downtown Carpinteria, with its own parking lot and a line stretching out the door (to be fair, the door was near the register). It took about fifteen minutes to order and get our stuff, but service was friendly and the pace wasn't unreasonable for a busy spot. I went in by myself while my husband hung out in the car with our dogs. While I waited, I checked out the Lucky Llama merch and the artwork on the walls, all for sale. There were several landscape paintings, I'm guessing by the same local artist, and they were all very expensive, like one had sold for $2,500. That makes Lucky Llama a kind of high-end art gallery in addition to a coffee shop. I didn't try the coffee, but I did get an açaí bowl to tide me over until dinner. The mango bowl came with blended açaí, mango, and bananas topped with granola, strawberry, banana, and honey (you can also get agave). It was a nice, light treat, and all the toppings were excellent--crunchy granola and really ripe fruit. My husband is a coffee fiend, so he got a latte. Lucky Llama is slower than Starbucks, but it's also cuter, and you can get açaí bowls and pricey landscape art to go with your coffee. I'd recommend it if you're looking to get your caffeine fix in Carpinteria. read more

Have you ever pulled up somewhere and just immediately fell in love with it? For years I had heard about this awesome coffee shop in Carpinteria that everyone loved to go to for meetings, study sessions, guitar jams, family outings, etc. and I had not gotten around to trying it. I am happy to announce that just a few months ago I tried the well built up cafe for the first time and automatically fell head over heels. Like a newb, I parked on the street the first time, not realizing there is a nice open dirt lot in the back. I walked up the dirt road watching children run around in the grass, laughing and playing while the adults sipped their coffee and had their own little chats. I walked in the door and the staff were also laughing and conversing with each other, but almost immediately reached out to welcome me and ask if I had any questions. It was the happiest, most welcoming vibe I have ever felt at a cafe. I quickly reviewed the menu and was automatically lured into the creativity of "The Mullet." To this day that "Mullet" was one of the greatest forms of liquid to ever have tingled my taste buds. I have ordered many drinks here since and all have been charming, but if you're in search of something unique that gives you that perfect caffeine buzz, my friends, "The Mullet" will prevail! Amongst the happy atmosphere, spacious parking, vast succulent beauty, friendly staff, quick wifi, and dainty coffee drinks this cafe also serves acai and breakfast bowls, along with fresh pastries delivered each morning. I was not a huge fan of the banana chocolate muffin as it was hard, dry, and somewhat bland, but their bagels and scones have worked well for me in the past. I also wanted to point out they no longer have "Castle Roasters" but instead carry "Dune Roasters" as their signature beans. You can also find trendy Dune and Lucky Llama branded accessories and apparel in shop. Love those white thermos bottles! You will definitely be seeing me back in shop here quite often.
