    Cabin #9 overlooking the ocean

My wife and I have lived on the Central Coast for several years and have visited Lucia Lodge a few times during our time here. It is not glamorous or trendy or full of nightlife, but it is a hidden gem along the most spectacular part of the Pacific Coast Highway between San Simeon and Big Sur. Built in the 1930's, Lucia Lodge is part of a mid 1800's land grant that includes 10 well appointed cabins including en suite bathrooms, comfortable queen beds, gas fireplace and one of the most stunning views of the rugged California coastline found anywhere. Staying here doesn't require a wave machine to lull you to sleep because the Pacific Ocean is 500 feet below you and waves of 10-15 feet in height crash against the shoreline creating one of the best nights' sleep EVER. They even have modern conveniences like WiFi, and in room coffee in the morning. If you ask me, I'm surprised that they aren't booked a year in advance, so this is a great time to visit.

We decided to keep going down Highway 1 through Big Sur to see what's out there. I remember reading about Lucia Lodge, but thought was a little out there and we ended up here. We decided to stop in and check out the gift shop/restroom. Then we saw the restaurant and decided to have lunch. The dining area is on the deck and we chose the seats facing towards the ocean (we can choose our own seats). I thought the view was so relaxing, almost romantic, even though there's nothing romantic about splitting a burger (we weren't that hungry). When you walk in, the menu is on the board when you walk in (simple food menu, more drinks to choose from). The staff is wearing masks and there is hand sanitizer available. Keeping the menu simple is easier on the staff and the customers, less contact in a good way. I thought the burger was a good size to split and the fries made our favorite list (yes, we judge fries). I had a glass of Estancia with my burger - it's one of my favorite Central Coast wines. It's a good stop on your Hwy. 1 adventure and worth checking out. I think if I ever spent the night next door, I would enjoy it.

    So pretty in the patio

Stumbled upon this restaurant, and we were sold on the view. Their patio faces the ocean, and it is just so luxurious sitting outside, feeling the ocean breeze while having a drink and enjoying some food that makes you just appreciate life. Really, is there anything much better than that? We didn't stay at their accommodations, so can't speak for the lodge. We had the salad and fish&chips, and although not great, it was fine. At least you won't feel like it was a rip off, when you get such a beautiful view thrown in. Enjoy, since life moves so fast, and it's nice to stop once in a while and take a deep breath.

Location, location, location... First thing is that, if you're in cabins 1-6, you don't have a sea view, you have car park view. For that reason, the cost is just unjustified. Sure, leave your room, cross the car park and sit on the bench and it's a million dollars!! The rooms are small, the bathrooms basic. There's not another restaurant for 12 miles and expect to pay at least $180 per couple at the lodge restaurant if you're drinking wine. The food is not great - dinner or breakfast. The staff are good. Service is attentive but not overwhelming. Stay a night. Take your own wine and food for a picnic. This is not my business but I feel compelled to say that the owners are missing a massive opportunity. A decent chef and an interior decorator... this place could be 600-800/day.

Truly an ideal location Reserve one of the cliff side cabins 7-10 for the most amazing view No frills means no microwave tv or phone but they have limited satellite internet and with a cozy little spot like this who wants a tv Food is just wonderful and the staff couldn't be more friendly and helpful If you order food to take back to your room they pack it up in little warmer baskets and it will be super hot when you get back The portions are gigantic; we should have ordered one each night and shared Take a little walk up the trail in back for a great spot to watch the sunset or do your morning workout

Cute little cabin on the cliff overlooking the ocean and listening to birds chirping. So relaxing and serene. A good getaway. There is also a trail behind the cabins. The room is equipped with a heater and a fireplace, as well as a keurig. The queen sized bed and pillows are pretty soft. 4 stars cause the bathroom wasn't that clean. Luckily I came equipped with cleaning supplies. The WiFi is pretty decent. No tv or phone service. If you want to disconnect from the world, I'd definitely recommend staying here.

View - 10 stars Had a glass of wine for a quick break along the way. Server was unobtrusive and kind and didn't mind that we were only there for a quick stop, just long enough to enjoy the view with our wine. Seriously though, that view. That View. THAT VIEW. Can't be beat. There is a cute little general store at Lucia Lodge along with the restaurant. If we'd have had the funds at the time of our stop, we would have rented one of the cottages overlooking the cliffs. Absolutely stunning views!

We booked room #4 along the Big sur coastline, and because it was a surprise (for me), I knew nothing about it going in. Location is a breeze to get to, just off Highway 1. The views from the restaurant and the lodges are gorgeous, as long as the fog stays at bay (har-har). The rooms are small, but space is at a premium, so I understand. We stayed in one of the rooms that had been recently "renovated," which pretty much consisted of a new coat of paint and new linens. The shower floor was flexible, which made me nervous, and the bed was REALLY squeaky, which proved to be quite hilarious. I loved the four Andes mints scattered around the room like a impromptu chocolate treasure hunt, and with no TV and no internet access, such random activities take shape. Each of the units share one wall, so when our incredibly drunk next door neighbors came back from a wedding, we actually had to ask them to keep it down because we could hear literally every word they said like they were in the room with us. "Hey I just met you, and this is crazy, but the walls are SUPER thin, so shut up maybe?" In the morning, we took a snooping tour of the rest of the units and the grounds, and found a secluded trail off the north end of the property. The path leads up to a private picnic area, surrounded by trees and wildflowers, overlooking the property and the south coastline. It's a secret garden of sorts, and I could see it being a gorgeous place for an event. The restaurant is overpriced for the quality of food. We started with the Lucia Lodge salad, which was fresh, flavorful and full of goodies, but that was the only culinary success of the evening. For entrees I had the Risotto with corn, mushrooms, and broccoli, which was bland, boring, and gluey. Darling man had the Pan fried salmon with risotto cake, the salmon was overcooked, dry, and again, boring. Continental breakfast was included in the room reservation, and consisted of pastries, fruit and yogurt. Nothing exciting or worth eating, really. All in all, you come for the views, to escape, and to re-focus. I was hesitant with the lack of reception or internet, but it gave us some awesome time to just be, adventure, and soak in the gorgeous natural beauty of the coastline. For 100 years old, the place is doing well for itself, leaning on the romance of yesteryear, with a slight updated flair. It's not the Ritz, but WOW what a view!

    Beautiful view from the cabins

My husband and I came here on our honeymoon this past week, and we're absolutely blown away. The cabins are charming and delightful, extremely clean. They take covid seriously- but it felt like taking a break from the world. The view is one of the best I've ever seen. Great food for lunch/dinner even if you aren't staying here. Very sweet, down to earth, relaxing, and private .... I can't wait to come back.

Lucia Lodge has been around for 85 years (http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/xBHyr710TTzHj95qnVXB9A?select=YUHuiCAKB_ecWF7IBQnHRg) and has some great views of the Big Sur coast from the dining room and patio areas (http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/xBHyr710TTzHj95qnVXB9A?select=AQ6rw3HOBFDMEX6ETI4PMw). Their Fish & Chips were named one of the top 5 Fish & Chips in the US by Coastal Living Magazine (http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/xBHyr710TTzHj95qnVXB9A?select=e-v_I3gIW-GRYXy1jBilJQ) Still, $21? They do provide a very large portion of 2 full fillets (basically 1 whole fish http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/xBHyr710TTzHj95qnVXB9A?select=WIjmOTgObQXnxB_K3AWJ8w). Tartar sauce comes with the plate & malt vinegar is at the tables if you want to go British. Fish was well cooked with moist and flaky flesh, but really bland batter so the vinegar & tartar sauce were a necessity along with some salt. I'd give it 3 stars. Garlic chicken sandwich ($16.50 http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/xBHyr710TTzHj95qnVXB9A?select=uTp5iOQeYk51j92EvtOuew) It did have nice char-broiled flavor, though no noticeable garlic flavor. Again the protein was well cooked and moist and the veggies were fresh and tasty. I liked it despite the lack of garlic. Unlike the large serving of fish & chips, this wasn't a big sandwich to make you feel like you got a reasonable value. 4 stars. Fries were mixed. First fry with my sandwich was cold. Others on plate were barely lukewarm. Fries with the g/f's fish & chips came out hot. My dish possibly sitting around under heat lamp while waiting for the fish to cook? 2.5 stars for the fries. OK food. A bit pricey. You're in the middle of nowhere so I guess you take what you can get.

Major shoutout to James!! First we couldn't get our door open and I emailed the after-hours email address and James showed up SO fast. Later in the evening, around 9pm, we realized we ran out of diapers for our son. My husband emailed the after hours email asking where the nearest store was because our maps was showing the closest one was about 40 minutes away and was about to close. James responded immediately, ended up getting diapers from a neighbor and dropped them off to us. He went above and beyond to help and made a huge difference in our trip. We got the honeymoon cottage and it was a great size, incredibly clean, and had the most breathtaking panoramic view of the cliff side and ocean. There are little paths you can take to explore the place. The location of this place alone is enough stay. So beautiful. It's also the perfect getaway to spend quality time with your loved one as there's no tv, no service, and not very good WiFi. Loved the lack of those distractions. The ONLY bummer was the restaurant wasn't open since it was affected by the fires. So the closest restaurant was 20 minutes away. No grocery store anywhere near either. And if you choose to bring your own food there is no refrigerator to keep it or microwave to heat something up. They provided breakfast which was a hard boiled egg, half a muffin, orange juice, and a tangerine. But definitely wish we came at a time the restaurant was running.

Beautiful breathtaking views. Very secluded and romantic setup. Such a nice cabin with leather furniture and a fireplace. Get the amenities of home inside a cabin. The bruschetta appetizer was delicious, but the main entrees were so-so. Overall, loved this place. Very friendly and helpful service. Very clean cabin. Highly recommended this place and definitely hoping to be back again.

The famous fish and chips... it was ok

You are paying for the view while having lunch/dinner at Big Sur... the price was definitely not cheap. We got fish and chips and it was about $24 or $28. Crispy, can eat with vinegar, but after a while it was kinda bland. Fries were shoestring types and crispy. Not bad.... the view was spectacular though. Friendly service.

Long time coming. What an exotic stay!

Let me shape your note so it flows beautifully but still feels personal and honest: Arriving at The Pinnacle Inn late in the evening was a bit of an adventure for us. The winding dirt road lined with grapevines felt a little intimidating in the dark, and I have to admit, we were feeling a bit unsure at first. But once we sorted out the gate and settled in, everything changed. The next morning, we headed out for a hike in the forest, and with the sunrise lighting up the hills, we finally saw just how incredibly beautiful this location truly is. It's a bit complicated but the signage was clear and there were a couple of parking spaces right by the check in office. Wow what a place Old Victorian and absolutely beautiful inside. Check in was easy and fun, we could keep our car where it was parked. There were small socializing events, a champagne pour at 5, cookies at 7...Our room was just off the parking area with no stairs to climb. We were also close to the breakfast spot. Our room was updated, very clean, and well-appointed with a fireplace, large TV, microwave, fridge, and a nicely renovated bathroom. Now for the downsides... Carmel happened to be in a heat wave while we were there, and the room was HOT. There's no AC, and the tiny fan they gave us barely made a difference. It definitely made sleeping uncomfortable. But the biggest disappointment by far was the breakfast. For the price you're paying per night, it was honestly shocking how underwhelming it was. The only protein option was hard-boiled eggs (and if you don't eat eggs, you're out of luck). Everything else felt like the bare minimum--mediocre toast, bagels, croissants, granola, yogurt, etc. The yogurt was so watery we couldn't even eat it, and the rest was just very basic and forgettable. We did appreciate that it was delivered directly to our room. Overall, we did enjoy the stay because of the charm, location, and friendly staff, but the heat and especially the breakfast were definite letdowns. The downsides and probably dealbreakers for us is the noise-you can hear everyone talking, closing doors, etc. The actual bed mattress feels old and isn't very comfortable. The WiFi is spotty too.Put double paned windows in, better WiFi and a new mattress and you'd have it! Unfortunately we won't be staying here again. Back to the candle light we go.

For my boyfriend's birthday weekend, I decided to book J Patrick House and Inn. I was really…read moreplanning on giving this place a 5 star review but after the awful experience here on our last day, I decided to take 2 stars off. Let me start with the positives. Before our arrival we were given a code to enter the living space and our room, so it was very convenient to have such an easy check-in with no hassle. Plus was a warm welcome from Nana, the Inn's pet cat. She was really cute and friendly. The room itself was cozy and patios enough for the two of us. The room was spotless clean and loved how spacious the bathroom was, and how comfortable the bed was as well. As far as the complimentary breakfast we received. It was okay. It was a quiche, yogurt with fruit, a muffin, sausages, and orange juice, on both days. It was left by our door around 9 am the two days we were there. Now, for the negatives. Parking spaces are limited and each room doesn't have a guaranteed parking spot. They have misleading information on their website. If you come back after 8 pm, forget about finding parking there. You will need to park in Cambria Inn, their sister property, and walk up a very dark and dangerous road back up to the Inn, which is unsafe! When I let their Inn know about this parking situation, the night before, I couldn't reach anyone after 8 pm, so I was told to call Cambria Inn. The person who picked up was extremely rude, and told me to park anywhere there was parking, after I explained there were no spots available. Finally we ended up parking at the Cambria Inn. The next day, I let the J. Patrick house know about this parking situation and someone over text got super defensive and was trying to send me screenshots of there being parking, when clearly there was none when we arrived, and kept arguing with me about it, which left a really bad taste in my mouth, and in stress I ended up leaving my super expensive jacket, which I still haven't heard about from the Inn. It's unfortunate that this situation happened because I was really hoping that we would have a better ending to a special weekend! I will not be coming back here again!

I just love this place! Stayed here twice now and I think it's my new go to place in cambria. I've…read morestayed so many places in cambria, I come here at least once a year. Very quiet, beautiful, and safe.. staying here alone is great! Comfortable, clean, easy.
