What a unique resort on Big Sur! We spent a few days here exploring the property & area around Cambria. No WiFi or cell service while on the property, but it was not a negative to be unplugged for a bit. Beautiful views from room, fireplace & deep tub was bonus (jacuzzi tub not working). The rooms were charming but could use a good cleaning - they allow pets & our room did have pet smell. Beautiful sunsets & lots of spots to enjoy the resort & garden. Staff were friendly, coffee shop & restaurant on-site as well as a small market w/gas. All in all a nice stay!

I absolutely adored our time here. We came right before Highway 1 reopened so we experienced a quieter Ragged Inn than probably exists now. First off, get your calls and emails done before you get here. You will have very spotty wifi and zero cellular service. Frankly, I rather loved that. It was so nice to be forced to disconnect. I laughed out loud watching my teenage son discover his phone no longer worked. The view is spectacular and stretches on forever. There really is no bad room view wise. There is a fire pit, a coffee shop, a nice restaurant and a very, VERY steep hike than I only recommend to those planning to be careful. Go at low tide or the beach disappears. Bring a book and enjoy the quiet. I'll review the restaurant separately, but it is great to have this on site so you aren't driving back to Cambria to eat out.

Ants. Limited hours, lots of amenities closed in peak season. The grounds are gorgeous. The restaurant is amazing (reviewed separately), the host was kind and informational... though, as he was giving his run down of all the things we needed to know as guests, it was quickly apparent that he was pretty much running the show with a skeleton staff. The general store "could be open if you need it" and he'd be the one to do it, but only takes cash. The snack bar: closed. The room. Double beds, who has those anymore? They were pretty tight for 4 adults, one had to sleep on the ground (brought a sleeping pad just in case for this reason). We were told they did not have rollaway beds, but as we were walking back to our room the next morning to leave, we saw they had at least 2? Not sure why that was kept from us. The bathroom in the room needs to be updated badly. Sitting on the toilet you notice ants wandering around on the floor; not one, but many. You pay for the views, I guess. From the room the view was great, and really makes up for 2 of the 3 stars, and the 3rd is the amazing iced oat milk latte I got at the cafe on the day we left. The girl at the cafe was very sweet, and the coffee hit the spot. Would stay here again, but I'm hoping maybe some updates can be done or maybe at the very least some pest control.

If you want gorgeous secluded views in a remote off grid area this is for you. A friend recommended this location after seeing it off the highway. Hotel: It's not far from Hearst Castle or San Simeon. I was informed that it is the unofficial entrance for Big Sur. Big property with gorgeous views of the ocean. We booked our reservation online. Around 3:00pm the same day I received a call from an unknown number. They left a voicemail stating that if I didn't update my CC within 3 hours my reservation would be given away. I quickly called back and sorted it out. I arrived at the hotel a little after 7:00pm. Checked in at the front desk. I was given 2 keys along with 2 parking passes. Oh and be advised, there is LITTLE TO NO CELL SERVICE OR WIFI. I went upstairs to the room, it was pretty cute. We had to jiggle the lock for the balcony. The curtain for the window wasn't secured properly and fell on my friend. The shower turns on by itself. Oh and while being a pet friendly hotel sounds like a plus. Be advised the walls are paper thin. You will hear every bark and scratch throughout the night. Food / Gas: We went to the restaurant to get some food. We waited about 20 min to speak with someone. By then we decided to order the food to go. I ordered mushroom soup and a ham & cheese croissant. Only thing I can say is don't order the mushroom soup. Disgusting dishwater looking substance. We went to the gas station they have onsite to see if there were any snacks. It's a limited selection and cash only. while it sound like only negatives, I will say the views are breathtaking. The property itself is gorgeous. Outdoor benches and seating to enjoy the views. I read that there are also firepits. I didn't partake in it but it's nice to know.

A unique opportunity to stay near the end of scenic highway 1. One of my favorite hotels with serene oocean views and walking paths in the gardens. It also has one of the best restaurants, holding up to the quality found in San Francisco and Carmel, with us proclaiming it our favorite meal after our trip to those stops. Rooms vary in views , and we have our favorites which I won't divulge because I want them available on our next stay since we stay here frequently. The complex has a gas station and a small store. A remote scenic place, and yet a favorite for destination weddings and special events.

A Breathtaking Family Escape - Ragged Point Inn, Big Sur Our recent stay at Ragged Point Inn with our two grandsons was nothing short of magical. Nestled on the cliffs just north of Big Sur, the inn feels like a hidden world where the views stretch forever and time slows down in the best way. From the moment we arrived, we were taken in by the natural beauty of the grounds. Towering trees, vibrant flowers, and sweeping ocean vistas made every corner photo-worthy. We took advantage of the nearby hiking trails, which led us to scenic overlooks and quiet moments by the coast--easy enough for the kids but rewarding for all of us. The weather was just right: crisp mornings, cool ocean breezes, and plenty of sun during the day. Sitting outside with a cup of coffee while watching the waves crash below was pure peace. Our room was clean, comfortable, and designed to showcase the view--opening the curtains each morning felt like unveiling a painting. The boys loved exploring the gardens and spotting wildlife along the cliffside paths. We had a lovely dinner at the restaurant, where the food was fresh and the portions generous. The coffee bar in the morning was a welcome touch, serving quality brews to enjoy with a view. The gift shop was a hit too--charming and well-stocked with local art, souvenirs, and snacks the boys couldn't resist. It's rare to find a place that appeals equally to adults and kids, but Ragged Point Inn struck that balance perfectly. Whether you're chasing adventure or just need a quiet place to reset, this spot delivers. Added notes: the front desk person graciously helped my wife with roll away beds for our grandsons and unfortunately we lost one of our key fobs during our trip and someone turned it in - they are very happily shipping it to me - wow! Five stars, hands down. We left refreshed, reconnected, and already dreaming about our next visit.

Our second stay at Ragged Point Inn was even more magical than our first. It's been about 15 or more years and all the things we loved here are the same, plus it's only gotten better. Our ocean front room was clean and fine for my hubby, our teen and me. I'm sure she would have preferred her own room but we barely spent any time there. We walked the grounds, photographed the view, relaxed and chilled in the incredible Big Sur air. Weather was perfect. Food at the restaurant was great! I enjoyed both breakfast (great avocado toast) and dinner. The koi in the pond are so friendly and went nuts for a bit of hand-fed bread! The views are exquisite - one could never tire of those cliff views. The gardens are lovely with hummingbirds galore. And kitties! Our teen was like a young girl again, running and playing with all the resort cats from sunrise to sunset. I can't wait to come back. I adore the sights, the sounds, the smell and the energy of Big Sur. Ragged Point Inn captures the best of all of it.

The Ragged Point Inn is renowned for its breathtaking "million-dollar view," offering not just stunning scenery but also great food and friendly people. What truly sets this place apart is its unique disconnect from the modern world, no Wi-Fi or cell service, allowing you to escape into a simpler time, far removed from technology. For those needing a connection, there's only a dial-up option available at the front desk. However, the most captivating aspect of this incredible destination is the inspiring story behind its creation as they mentioned in their site. It all began with Wiley and Mildred Ramey, a visionary couple who transformed a humble piece of land into the enchanting retreat it is today. Starting with a small motel, gas station, and snack bar, they worked tirelessly, often by themselves, attending to guests as if they were family. During Thanksgiving, when visitors arrived hungry and the snack bar was closed, the Rameys generously shared their own holiday turkey. Over the years, Wiley, Mildred, and later their children, worked diligently to grow the business, all while maintaining their deep hospitality and love for the land. What started as a two-room motel has now blossomed into a thriving property featuring 39 rooms, an expanded snack bar, a gourmet restaurant, a gift shop, an artisan jewelry shop, a coffee bar, and a mini-market. Today, the Rameys' legacy continues with their children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren who carry forward the family's vision of warmth and hospitality. The story of the Ragged Point Inn began in the late 1950s when Wiley and Mildred, visiting California's Central Coast from their home in the San Joaquin Valley, stumbled upon a lonely stretch of Highway 1. Known for their love of scenic drives and Wiley's penchant for buying land they admired, the Rameys discovered a small outpost on the ocean side of the highway north of San Simeon. Once part of the vast Hearst Ranch, the outpost was little more than a snack shack with a neon "EAT" sign, a couple of rusty gas pumps, and a few travel trailers. Despite its modest appearance, the Rameys were captivated by the area's natural beauty. Determined to make it their own, they spent two years persuading the landowner, carnival man Monte Young, to sell the property. After acquiring it, they removed the "EAT" sign and built a modest two-room motel. This marked the beginning of the Ragged Point Inn as we know it today, a place born from love, determination, and a deep respect for the stunning landscape that continues to enchant visitors from around the world.

Beautiful resort, caring staff, good restaurant on site and only 20 min drive to Hearst Castle. You may see Elk and even Zebras beside the road and there is an Elephant Seal viewing area. Sunsets are spectacular!

Beautiful views- are they worth it or maybe just stop by?

To the locals and maybe people looking to go here as well outside of the area-- the customer service here is horrendous with an immense lack of communication and care for their clients. You can apparently lose your room at a moments notice depending on their mood and if they remember to communicate. I had an understanding that they wanted locals to stay as well as foreigners, and that dogs were welcome. My stay made me question that as well as the competency of the staff and the business. I paid ahead an ocean view dog friendly room and Nancy had helped me get the breakfast included winter special. I was wanting my 13yo small dog to go so I had one pet and also have a service dog. This was for my birthday and I was excited to go. I told her then and three other times that I am interested in buying another night in the room but needed to make sure my partner wanted to do that as well and they were busy working so I was having to wait and wanted to make sure there wasn't a cutoff time. She and the other front office ladies never specified a cutoff time that I should pay for the room and said it was no problem we could let them know later the same day. When I got there, alone, on my birthday, with my service dog, I was greeted in such a cold manner despite me coming in friendly and excited for the stay. They rushed me through the checking in process and commented grumpily about my ADA Service Dog, and instead of asking what questions they are legally allowed to ask me about my service animal, they made me feel discriminated with rude gestures and comments acting like they knew all the alerts and tasks an ADA service dog will make to their specific owner with a disability the person /should not have to address, talk about, or feel the need to defend/. It did not stop there. I went to a nice birthday dinner in Cambria and my partner agreed to another night. I went in with him to the front office after dinner and told her we were ready to purchase and finalize the second night. She tells me they sold the room 20min ago and we would have to stay somewhere else. I'm at this point shocked and confused why there was no communication. I am not sure if it was discrimination on my age but she also said "well they are paying for 2 dogs and /you/ have a service dog so you're only paying for one dog" Visibly SHRUGS). At this point that's blatant discrimination but it's my birthday and all I had been trying to do was be nice to them. I literally do not understand the hostility besides it being discrimination and lack of good customer service skills and communication. After MUCH back and forth she finds another room that we will then have to move to the next day. ((In the middle of this she exclaims that she needs to call another person to let them know they could not stay in their room tomorrow and called and left a message for them at 9pm (who does this??)) and I took a mental note how she couldn't even call me to communicate about my room but had time to throw a fit in front of us and call a customer about theirs. This was INSANE. Oh it doesn't stop there. The next morning I wake up trying to make this a new day and a good trip that we could still salvage besides the fireplace clicking loudly all night, and I go to the restaurant to get breakfast and the staff asked for my breakfast voucher. I never received or was told about a voucher. I then had to have a waitress walk me to the front office and without looking up the woman tells me "no she does not get one!" At this point I'm like what is going on here we've paid a lot of money and she looks up and says "oh sorry I didn't see it was you" and then helps me get a breakfast voucher. We then moved to the other room in the afternoon and had a quiet stay in the smaller garden room for the rest of the time. They waived my pet fee for the next one night, but honestly for ruining a birthday and doing this to a local who was trying to support another local business, I will be telling friends and family about this experience. *Discrimination against a person using a service dog who is trained to perform tasks to assist with the persons disability and question them even when the dog was under control and doing its job, no disruptive behavior and with me at all times, and favor someone without a service dog and treat me differently, is a HUGE reason why I have made this one star so others who have actual service dogs can be made aware of this experience and a caution for the upper management to swiftly find a resolution for this illegal behavior from their staff. The views are great, the rooms are nice, I felt like the grounds were pet friendly, and the customer service is discriminatory, unorganized, dishonest, lacks communication and professionalism and needs to be reviewed and managed. Proceed with caution, one night stay might be the way to go. Really was hoping for a better stay than the one I experienced.

Finally went back for my husband's birthday. This place is so calming, but if you're looking for a lot to do, there isn't anything. They have a cute little gift shop, coffee, shop, and market. Some of the places were cash only. Gasoline was seven dollars plus a gallon but I guess it's because of where it's located. I asked for second story bedroom king size, and it was perfect. Left the door open a little bit so we could hear the waves at night. We took a walk around the grounds and bought a bottle of wine at the market along with a few crackers and sat down and relaxed. The bedroom is spacious and it has a fireplace. Our bathroom had two sinks, which was nice. I noted on there survey sheet that they needed some grab bars in the shower and also some towel bars. Coffee and tea are provided, and the coffee was pretty good. They also have a TV and you can sit out on the deck in some comfortable chairs just staring at the ocean.

What an amazing experience! This is definitely going to become an annual destination for us. First off, they are incredibly dog-friendly--truly dog-friendly. It's so easy to spend the day here with your furry friends. There's plenty of space to walk them around, and they're even welcome on the outdoor patio of the restaurant. Now, let's talk about the food. Everything we tried was fantastic, but the coffee bar and dinner menu were definite standouts. We also indulged in some amazing cake that was the perfect treat. As for the rooms, they were spacious with large patios that were perfect for relaxing and enjoying the day. The property itself has so much to offer. Not only were the views stunning, but between the restaurant with three separate menus, the coffee bar, a snack bar (closed during our visit), a store, and a gift shop, there was plenty to explore. It's the perfect place for a little staycation without ever needing to leave the property. I'll definitely be back! P.S. limited cell service. Plan to disconnect or use their wifi.

Surprisingly good coffee shop at the southern end of the drive into Big Sur. You're not here for coffee. You drove this way for spectacular views. But you stop for a restroom and maybe a snack. Wait, is that a coffee place? With a Pistachio Rose Latte?? Ragged Point is a bit of an expected kind of test stop and inn along Ca-1. Everything we saw was $2-$5 more than it needed to be. Because *they can* out here with literally no competition. But, despite my cynicism this is a cooler-than-it-needs-to-be cafe with an explorable coffee menu. The line became long while we waited as the single worker take orders and made drinks. But the drink was worth the wait. There is no cell service and no wi-fi. So you'll have to wait to post your Yelp review :) Grab a latte and take the scenic walk behind the inn. You'll be happy you did!

The entrance of the hotel was very promising, but it all came down with the experience that followed. We were standing at the desk for 25 mins, no one came to help us check in. In those 25 mins we kept calling, and we could hear the phone ring, but no one answered. From the same room the receptionist came out after half an hour. He had a foul smell coming from that room, although I dont want to comment on what the smell was. After we were provided the room, the room was dirty, there were soiled towels in the bathroom, bedsheets were soiled, and not replaced. When we mentioned this to the receptionist, he provided a different room on the same floor. The room was facing the parking lot, had ONLY A CEILING FAN, A TABLE FAN, AND NO AIR CONDITIONING. One of the bulbs in the new room was not working either, it was flickering the whole time. The sofa was dirty, and stained, and I didnt feel comfortable using it anyways. The only positive of the room was the pressure of the shower, but the spray modes were not working. Overall a very poor experience.

In that the ocean view rooms were old and worn. Dirty curtains. Popcorn ceilings. Lots of things patched together. Small rooms and really dark. I was initially disappointed when we got into our first room. It was not at all what the pictures showed. Being initially on the downstairs unit people would walk by our patio while we're sitting there. Basically looking at us and disturbing our peace. Our 2nd unit was upstairs. Which was a lot better. As we had more privacy and a better view of the ocean. But basically the same layout as downstairs. There were alot of things I enjoyed about this resort, which ultimately left me satisfied with my stay here. For example: 1. The grounds was beautiful and expansive. Lots of greenery. They had a sand volleyball court. Multiple fire pits. A giant chess and checkers board. Multiple areas to sit along the cliff. 2. View from the balcony was unmatched. You have a very expansive and view of the ocean. We werent beach front. We were the ocean view balcony rooms. But it was nice too because you were able to see the grounds of the resort leading into the ocean. Rocking chairs and table too were a nice touch on the balcony. 3. Nice beach access and super close too. No street crossing or dodging cars. 4. Front desk. They moved our rooms (to an upstairs room) with no issues. They also have complimentary toiletries at the front desk. 5. Fire place. Our rooms had fire places. With a lot of compressed wood chip bricks. It definitely warmed up the room and made it so much more romantic. 6. Parking. They have parking right infront of your room. So there isnt that much walking from your vehicle to the room. 7. During the weekdays there was no one here!! You literally had the entire resort to yourself which was amazing!! 8. Close proximity to Cambria as well as the elephant seal viewpoint, as well as many other points of interest. Things that could use some improvement: 1. Rooms. They need an update. Their were stains on certain towels, which is disgusting. 2. Room service. We had our room cleaned one day. They didnt throw any of the trash away on the table. They didnt get rid of the used cups. Nor did they empty the trashcans..... 3. Pillows- the pillows tucked! Beds were super comfy. But im sore and my neck and back is tight.... 4. Gym. Again based on the pictures it was this huge thing. But it was extremely small. Served its purpose. But it looked like an after thought. They were also missing handles on their machines. Overall it was a wonderful 5 night stay. The views are unparalleled. I love how much green space is here. After the weekend there was basically no one here. So it was a very relaxing and enjoyable stay.

Maybe a bit pricey but the view is unbeatable! The room was comfortable and the staff at the front…read moredesk is very sweet and helpful, marking everything on a physical map and answering all our questions. The attached breach area is really cool, it's huge, and many different things to enjoy : a cabin, beach, grass, rocks, bonfires, stars. It was fun just waking around and exploring. However the bonfires were very crowded at night. Free coffee is nice though no free breakfast. We went to the attached restaurant for breakfast and it was amazing but also so much food we slipped lunch. I tried to go to the gym in the morning but it only opens at 9... So I watched the beautiful sunrise instead.

What a neat place to stay in Cambria. My only regret is booking only one night…read more The room had a retro vibe but was very well maintained and clean. Loved the little pour over coffee pods. Never seen anything like this. In the mornings they bring you a picnic basket with a thermos full of coffee, some pastries and a do it yourself mimosa. The hotel has easy access to the moonstone boardwalk that runs along the bluffs. Easy walk to the boardwalk and to the beach to enjoy the sunset. Need to come back to stay at this place.

LOVE the Aesop products in the room!!! a few downside during my stay were: the few times i went to the front desk, the "out of office" sign was up each time. i wanted to rent a bike to bike around the town, no one was around to assist. i waited about 10-15m each time. they have a fire pit that was on the entire time. i heard they provide s'more kits, but we were not provided with any. there isnt really any pet relief area on site. also, all units do not have AC, only fans. i had no service while i was there. i literally was on SOS. i actually loved it. don't worry, there is wifi avail! i would def book white water again!
