My husband and I stayed at Vagabond Inn in Carmel this week, and there were definitely some highs and lows. The property is really charming and has that classic cozy Carmel vibe. The staff was warm and welcoming, and the happy hour with wine, cheese, and fruit was a great touch. The courtyard with the stone fire pit and waterfall is beautiful and makes the whole place feel extra inviting. You also really can't beat the location--it's an easy walk to the village, shops, restaurants, galleries, and the beach. Our room was updated, very clean, and well-appointed with a fireplace, large TV, microwave, fridge, and a nicely renovated bathroom. Now for the downsides... Carmel happened to be in a heat wave while we were there, and the room was HOT. There's no AC, and the tiny fan they gave us barely made a difference. It definitely made sleeping uncomfortable. But the biggest disappointment by far was the breakfast. For the price you're paying per night, it was honestly shocking how underwhelming it was. The only protein option was hard-boiled eggs (and if you don't eat eggs, you're out of luck). Everything else felt like the bare minimum--mediocre toast, bagels, croissants, granola, yogurt, etc. The yogurt was so watery we couldn't even eat it, and the rest was just very basic and forgettable. We did appreciate that it was delivered directly to our room. Overall, we did enjoy the stay because of the charm, location, and friendly staff, but the heat and especially the breakfast were definite letdowns. We'd consider coming back, but with much lower expectations for the food--and definitely not during a heat wave. read more

We stayed in room 11. It's clean, there is the sound of a water feature in the courtyard that is nice, the bathroom is amazing, there's a fireplace, fridge and a real coffee machine with some comfy chairs to relax in. The service is great! They also bring you a nice breakfast in the am! The downsides and probably dealbreakers for us is the noise-you can hear everyone talking, closing doors, etc. The actual bed mattress feels old and isn't very comfortable. The WiFi is spotty too.Put double paned windows in, better WiFi and a new mattress and you'd have it! Unfortunately we won't be staying here again. Back to the candle light we go. read more

Such a cozy and relaxing stay! Loved the heated bathroom floors, huge soaking tub, and the fireplace that made the room feel extra inviting. The antique windows added so much charm, and you can tell a lot of thought went into the little details. Jura automatic coffee machine it has an automatic espresso machines that grind beans fresh and can make drinks like espresso, cappuccino, latte, and flat whites with the touch of a button. Everything felt super comfortable--breakfast is personalized and delivered to your door step. No need to even leave. Oh man. Loved this place! A++ service. Diego was awesome. The lobby coffee machine was a modern miracle, better than coffee shops in town. Daily breakfast was healthy and delicious. We were on our honeymoon there and soaked together in the huge tub. The fire place was easy to use and kept the room warm and cozy. The whole establishment was well curated. We stayed in room nine. It was nice and quiet. Brophys Tavern is across the street. Quick affordable food and snacks are available at 5th Ave Deli. There are so many great places in walking distance. read more

This place is so quaint, it's super cute, they are friendly in the front office. Very helpful, willing to help when it's needed. Morning breakfast is tasty and just enough. Beds are very comfy, at night when it gets cold there's always the fire to light and for that extra warmth booth there is the heater!!! The blankets are quite toasty!!!! We had two pups w us and they loved the blankets. I do wish they have them for sale, they should get some made to sell. Located in a really good location. Randal and Thomas have become a great example of what we enjoy so much about the B&B as has everyone else we have met there. Will 100% stay again, Randall was amazing for local recommendations and also just conversation (he is the best!!!). We stayed for our honeymoon and wished we could have stayed longer. The breakfast, was honestly so good for eggs and cereal and yogurt we left every day feeling fueled for a day of excursions. Plan on coming back as the second we got in we just felt the stress leave our bodies and immediately just feel happy. Could not recommend this place to enough people. We had a wonderful time here at the Vagabond. Next time we want to try out one of the larger rooms with a vintage bathtub. Unfortunately many of their rooms were all booked up. Our room was clean, had all the amenities, cute small fireplace, nice view of the courtyard, a pretty camilia bush in front of our window and although the room was a bit small for my husband who is 6'4" the room was comfy. The filtered water taste amazing (not sure why), sheets were always clean and the room had no funky smells which I am so sensitive to. The hosts and staff we're wonderful. They have wine and snacks in the lobby and we had a wonderful conversation with one of the guests who is good friend with the owners/managers. During checkin they have you fill out their breakfast menu and omg their jam, croissants and soft boiled eggs were perfect everyday. We will definitely return. read more

Quaint, quiet, and cozy, the Vagabond's House Inn is an ideal place to retreat and recuperate when visiting Carmel-by-the-Sea. Located within walking distance of downtown Carmel (a few uneven blocks), this boutique B&B is superbly situated near Carmel cuisine (such as Le Soufflé and Toro) and nestled within a quiet, convenient neighborhood (one of the adjacent streets has untimed parking--essential because of the limited free and/or available parking within the city). While Carmel is dog friendly, the Vagabond's House Inn is dog welcoming. From the greetings with treats to the provided doggy blanket to the treat dishes on which our dog's name was handwritten, the personal attentiveness and touches by staff made the inn that much more inviting. (Only select rooms allow pets.) The mixture of modern and rustic decor makes the buildings and rooms sophisticated but not stuffy, refreshing yet reminiscent of simpler times. In fact, the Dutch door for the room was a simple design choice that delivered spaciousness and seclusion, openness and remoteness. The remainder of the room exuded elegance along with comfort--impressed, I spent a week after in search of the room's recliner. Happy we chose this spot! Clean and nice, centrally located, breakfast provided. They also offer a wine hour and have a cute patio with a fire pit. They deliver breakfast to your room and it was good. We stayed in room 7 and felt like it was our own room. Waking distance to everything we wanted to go to. Parking provided. The window view from our room was amazing. They don't have AC and it was unusually hot the first day/two of our stay. They brought us a fan but keep this in mind if you go when it is hot. Just stayed at this quaint B&B over Christmas and it was incredibly charming. Apparently it just got voted by Forbes as one of the best places to stay in Carmel, not surprised :). It is such a special place and Randal takes incredible care of all the guests there. So much thought is put into the beautifully appointed rooms, from heated marble floors, fireplaces, comfortable beds and a delicious continental breakfast. My husband and I have stayed here twice now for our January anniversary and we love it. The rooms are beautiful, the morning coffee and delivered croissants are a lovely touch, and the fact that they have the most awesome bathrooms ever, can't be mentioned enough! My husband also tacked on the roses and rosè option for our anniversary and so we had champagne and roses delivered to our room upon arrival. Beautiful! They also have a massage room on site that you can reserve a couples massage that is better than most we have received just about anywhere else ever! The only reason for my taking a star away from this review is the thermostat or lack there of in the room, and the fountain! The noise from the fountain is a distraction all night long to an otherwise quiet environment and I asked if they'd turn it off at night and they said no. As for the thermostat, there isn't one and the rooms get really hot! If you put the fireplace on, even for a little while for ambience in the winter, it gets to be so warm, especially with a feather bed, you can't cool down the room unless you sleep with the door or window in the bathroom open. Would be much better served to have an in room thermostat you can manipulate to your own comfort level. These two adjustments are what I'd be looking forward to in order to stay here annually. read more

My wife and I felt very welcomed by the hosts and the attention to detail made us feel like we were honored guests even though the house was full. My husband and I came here for our anniversary. It was amazing! They were so kind and attentive. We had breakfast brought to us in the mornings at a time that suited us best. It was presented to us in a such a special way as well! Upon arrival we were greeted kindly checkin was easy. Our room was beautiful and had champagne chocolate, wine, and flowers sitting waiting forever us. They had a latte maker up at the front as well as a wine and cheese hours. It was a quiet peaceful relaxing atmosphere with the fountain continuously running and the smell of jasmine outside our window. It was super conveniently located close to town. I really loved my stay here! It's such a cute inn, and all of the staff that I encountered here were so nice!! I stayed in room 10, which was on the second floor, and it was great! The room is so beautiful - it had such a modern, cozy feel to it. And the bathroom was gorgeous! Everything was so spacious with all the comforts of home - fireplace, huge TV with streaming services, a pretty big mini fridge with freezer, microwave, and sofa :) I would highly recommend this inn! The only difficult thing was parking - it was hard to find the dedicated parking lot, but street parking was doable. read more

Hey, he said to chill so I'm going to chill! Peace out!!! But, as a neurotic Virgo, this staycation was planned six months ago (he just forgot that he approved my time off months ago)... I love Carmel for its quaint, small town charm and picturesque ocean water views. And, I love how incredibly dog-friendly it is but when looking for dog-friendly accommodations, it was a bit challenging. I like supporting independently owned businesses and most places I looked through were super dated and/or charge $600+ a night with a ridiculous $100+ pet fee per a night. Why am I paying $100+ for my dog to sleep on the floor? Hobos sleep for free on the floor! I came across The Vagabond's House on Yelp and instantly fell in love with all the pictures of this small English-style Bed & Breakfast (it looks just as beautiful in person). There's only 11 rooms and most of them have been recently renovated so each room has a unique mix of modern vintage charm. I stayed at Room #11 for two nights over the weekend. It was $379/night and totaled about $900 including the $30/day pet fee, $30 room guarantee, and tax. Two night minimum stay on the weekends. Considering the location, renovated rooms, amenities, and complimentary breakfast, I thought it was a good value. (+) Boutique B&B located within walking distance to all the restaurants, cafes, and shops in downtown Carmel. You have to cancel within 172 hours (7 days) before your arrival time and there's a deposit of one night's charge. *No a/c but fans are provided. *No phone in rooms so if you need something (e.g. more toilet paper), you will have to go inside to the office and ask. *Weak shower pressure and the pump for the shampoo and conditioner kept getting clogged. *Private lot (free) has very, very tight spaces so if you're worried about getting scratches/dents from other drivers, look for street parking. 4th avenue has 24 hour parking (make sure to check the signs as most streets have 2 hour limits). *Bring your own shower cap, q-tips, and cotton balls. None are provided. I had a fantastic weekend getaway at The Vagabond's House and so did Tater Tot. When it was time to leave, he wouldn't leave the heated marble bathroom floor. It was just what I needed to decompress from work and city life. The Vagabond's House is the best place I've stayed at in the Carmel/Monterey area. This place is absolutely incredible and I can not possibly rate it high enough. I never knew I what I was missing in a B&B or Inn experience. Every detail has been thought about in each room. Heated bathroom floors, fireplaces, the most comfortable beds, heavy robes, breakfast is DELIVERED to your door every morning... and good breakfast! Soft-boiled eggs in egg cups, fruit, yogurt, fluffy croissants, bagels, and more. Oh yeah, and stick around between 4-6 for complimentary wine and cheese. The staff is absolutely incredible and super friendly. They each give you a walk through of your room to explain how to work the fireplaces, show you where the complimentary water and cream sherry is, give a little history of the book pages that wallpaper the bathrooms or the trinkets and decor that add all the personality to the room. (Carmel used to be an artist retreat where Dali, Hemingway, and many more have stayed and the whole place is decorated with snippets of their stories.) Then the bathtub! Oh the bathtub is super deep and comes with relaxing bath salts and soap to melt away the week. You can likely find cheaper rooms in the area, but none come with the experience that you have at Vagabond's. From the staff, to the conversations with other guests, to the central location to downtown and the beach, to the delicious breakfast in bed, to the complimentary night cap in each room, the value and experience cannot be beat. read more

Yes, this place is pretty special. Even in a place like Carmel-by-the-sea, this hotel stands out as a wonderful place to stay. Everything about it is charming, lovely, friendly, clean, open, well maintained and pleasantly fragrant. We absolutely had a great stay. They offer vegan options for breakfast as well as gluten-free. The room category we stayed in was super nice and quite affordable. They have several options with bigger rooms but the one we had was lovely. The only complaint we had was that our neighbor (on the second night) was playing the TV super loud. To the point were it was hard to hear our TV playing. The walls seem to be pretty thin. There are no phones in the room and no one to call (that we were aware of) if something goes wrong after 9pm. Luckily, our neighbor turned off the TV at about 10pm, just as I was getting dressed to go knock on their door (it was that loud). Otherwise, The Vagabond's House was one of the nicest places we've stayed at in Carmel. We'll stay here again for sure on our next trip. read more

This place exceeded my expectations. From the moment we checked it we felt right at home. We made it just in time for the complimentary wine and cheese night. To get to our room we pass a cute terrace with fIre pit and budding rose bushes and string lighTs. We are staying in room 6 and LOVE it! The bed is super comfy, all windows open to views of the oCean, trees, and rooftops of Carmel. The fireplace will get use every night. And the reading nook is picturesque. The complimentary breakfast was amazing- coffee, juices, soft boiled eggs, croissants, and fresh fruit. We love it here! read more

What a gem the Vagabond's House is. My partner and I stayed here for two nights to celebrate our anniversary, in room number two. It's hard to find just one thing to rave about. * The room itself was beautifully decorated, down to the walls of the bathroom, which were papered with pages from vintage 19th and 20th-century books and advertisements. The new gas fireplace and flat-screen TV were lovely touches as well. * The bed was probably the most comfortable I've ever slept in - seriously! I almost asked the front desk where they found such a comfortable mattress. * The bathroom itself was amazing, with heated marble floors, a huge freestanding bathtub, and an even bigger shower. * The grounds of the inn itself were gorgeous, too. The patio is lined with trees and flowers, with a water fountain, fire pit with tables and chairs, and string lights strung above the area that are absolutely adorable at night. * The inn itself is within a few seconds' walking distance of the downtown area, but even on a busy day, you wouldn't know that from the noise(or lack thereof) level, which only added to how relaxing the place was. * Breakfast(brought to the room) was delicious, with plenty of choices to select from. There was also a daily wine-and-cheese hour in the lobby for guests. More than anything, though, the service from the staff at the inn was incredible. When we hit more traffic than expected on our drive from San Francisco to Carmel, the inn staff called to make sure that we were okay. We were greeted warmly upon arrival, and everyone we interacted with was genuinely pleasant. There was even a bottle of champagne with a "Happy Anniversary" note waiting for us in the room on check-in. I'm sorry if it seems like I'm gushing, but the experience we had was just that good. It really does set the bar for how a "b&b" should be. My partner and I have already decided that, when we come back to Carmel, we'll be staying at the Vagabond's House again. read more

So much so that we chose the location for our daughter's elopement and intimate ceremony. The rooms and the courtyard are darling and quaint and were the perfect setting for our special occasion. We stayed here a few years ago and had a great time in the premium room. . However, this time we decided to gamble on the least expensive room ( nr 12), which shares a wall with the kitchen for the Inn. The room was adequate but nothing fancy. Standard bathroom , wall heater , towels were not very thirsty.. Noise issues: Most of the rooms face a small courtyard . Quiet hours are 9PM to 8 AM. However., a large group of 10 or so with children were at the fire pit until 9PM.. The same folks gathered 7 30AM after pounding on the office door for coffee ( Office opens at 7:45) and yelling loudly to each other right outside our door. Our room also shared a wall with the kitchen inn. which was a bit noisy. Breakfast is enough to keep body and soul together. Grocery store bagels and croissants., Eggs , fruit etc. Our tray did not include the egg we ordered. The kitchen first said no eggs available for" a while" . They handed me some from the stove.. which were raw inside (!!) On my third trip to the kitchen I just got some raw eggs and microwaved them.. I think we'll try another place next time. On the plus.. the front desk tried very hard to please.,. gave us a bottle of champagne when they were unable to deliver on a promise to have our room ready an hour early., and brought a decaf setup directly to our room when I discovered the fancy coffee machine only had regular coffee. read more

After our wedding in San Gregorio in early April we wanted to get away for several days instead of taking a big ocean-crossing honeymoon immediately. Very happy and very exhausted after a weekend plus of events, we wanted a place to truly relax (in driving distance) - and we could not have asked for a better place to do it. Upon arrival we were greeted by super friendly Thomas, who offered us a glass of wine, showed us to our room and arranged massages for us the next morning. Our room was gorgeous and the bed **very** comfortable. The breakfast (that is delivered to your room at your preference of time and which you essentially order the day prior) was delicious. And, if you're a coffee-lover/snob, they have an espresso/steamed milk machine that makes impressive drinks to your specifications. The grounds are gorgeous, and we spent much of our time lounging around the Inn, drinking coffee and enjoying the late afternoon wine and cheese hour. When we did venture out we were thrilled to be just blocks from the main street and a short walk from the beach. For restaurants and activities the helpful staff provided excellent recommendations. I really can't rave about this place enough. We were so well taken care of and it was a wonderful place for relaxation and rejuvenation. This place was a dream! Booked a surprise trip for my boyfriend for his birthday and I'm so glad we came here. It's the cutest and cleanest little inn/ bed and breakfast. This was my first time staying at a hotel since covid (stayed in room 12, first floor) and the room and bathroom was spotless, super clean and we felt comfortable. Super modern too. The courtyard was awesome and nice to sit out and enjoy the fire in the evening, plus the free wine and cheese in the late afternoon. The morning breakfast was super good and came right on time. Also a good location to the downtown area, we walked to dinner and it took less than 10 minutes with pretty scenery on the way. Come here! read more

Great room and location. This would be a five star rating, however customer service and employees make a memorable first impression. After less than 24 hours of a three day stay, I will never stay at this place again. Gianne or Jianne was extremely obtuse and disrespectful. I let her know that I would like the room to be cleaned. She told me,"you need to leave the sign on the door." I asked her if she could just notify housekeeping since I would have to leave my family and walk over a mile. Her cold reply, "it's policy. I can't go into your room." I told her I wasn't asking her to go to my room but rather just notify Housekeeping. She refused. I had to walk all the way back and leave my family at a restaurant. I will never stay here again. It's unfortunate because Randall was such a gentlemen over the phone when I booked the reservation. He was accommodating when we arrived late. He was an exemplary employee in all my interactions. When I asked for the email of the general manager she told me they didn't have one and to just the generic hotel email. I find that unusual. Regardless, when you pay $500 a night, you'd think they would call housekeeping. read more

We are just about to end our stay here. My wife and I were happy to find such beautiful accommodations that are pet friendly. We were trying to get out of the smoke for the recent fires and loved our stay here. Everything was very clean and they seem to be taking all of the COVID stuff really seriously which we really appreciate. The staff was all very friendly and accommodating. The breakfast was lovely and it even came with two little dog treats with our dogs name on the bowl. Amazing attention to detail. This place is beautiful, it is certainly not the cheapest place to stay but it's a wonderful value if your looking for a clean, beautiful, place to stay. read more

Simply put: Just a marvelous four night stay. Everything was picture perfect, from the courtyard to the room decor to the incredibly comfortable bed to the breakfast each morning. We made late reservations in Carmel and I was overjoyed when I found that The Vagabond House still had a few rooms available. We reserved Room Three and it was such a welcome respite at the beginning and end of each day. Having a simple but delicious breakfast delivered each morning through our Dutch Door was such a fun touch. I made great use out of our soaking tub before bed each evening. We continued our travels up to Napa Valley and our bed during our stay there was rock hard compared to the plush bed at The Vagabond- easily one of the most comfortable hotel beds I've experienced. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend The Vagabond House, and we're dreaming about the next time we can return! read more
