    The Ocean room.

We love staying here. The cottages are all very cute and clean, and the location is perfect - right at the top of Ocean blvd. The rates are also super reasonable. Best of all, its dog friendly.

They also gave us a complimentary bottle of sparkling wine for anniversary!

Loved our stay we went around October for our 2nd wedding anniversary and it was the perfect time!

Lots of sunlight in the room (can close the drapes at night).

We stayed over Easter weekend in the Ocean Avenue Cottage. The cottage was very charming and quite a lot of space, a great fireplace, water station/fridge and a parking spot (huge plus); the bathroom also had a nice set-up/space. The property itself is in the best location (corner of Ocean Avenue at Torres and Mountain View) - there is a park across the street and Carmel Plaza within a quarter mile. The cottage looks out into the garden; you can hear some street noise, but that is to be expected with the location of the property (and honestly, if you're sensitive, just wear ear plugs to bed). James, a manager at the front desk, has lots of suggestions for restaurants, etc. We will certainly be back!

Breakfast basket! Delivered to our cottage.

Had a great weekend here in the Einstein cottage with hubs and 2 pets! A few things to note: - Each cottage has its own parking space! But only room for 1 car. - Einstein cottage is right in front of the main office so you'll want to keep the living room blinds closed. - Lovely breakfast basket is included! Just be sure to let them know when you check in that you'd like breakfast delivered to your room. - From 5 to 6pm, they have a wine and cheese hour! But you have to go to the lamplighter location, which is a 7~ min walk down Ocean (nice walk!) - No air conditioning but they have a room fan. Heater and fireplace are great when it's chilly. Gets colder in the room at night (40s outside when we stayed here) - All their snacks are $1, including water. They call it an honesty bar so you just leave cash in the basket. (Do the right thing) - There is a path/trail that's great for walking your fur baby for a quick potty and walk. Another road leads straight to Mission Trail Park! (Really convenient and lovely walk). - You'll want to bring slippers for wearing around the cottage. The ground is kind of dirty (socks were dark gray every night). We enjoyed our stay and liked that the forest cottage was not in the main shopping area as lamplighter is. Staff is very friendly and helpful. Good price for the area it's in. Yes, I'd recommend.

For parents getting two rooms, note that a pack n play barely fits, no door.

I have mixed feelings about this place. The staff are lovely; friendly, engaging, and really want the stay to be great. The room was not good. It's sad but the Best Western I stayed in a few days before, in Capitola, was so much nicer. The room smelled of sewer gas coming from the sink. It took us a few days to figure out the smell, we let them know on the last day. On the second day I pointed out that there were black smudges above the same sink; it looked like black mold. The place just doesn't look well cared for. I reserved the Garden Room because it's a two bedroom and we traveled with a one year old. She goes to bed at 7pm. I don't. Unfortunately the room isn't adequately described as "an alcove with a twin bed, nightstand, chair, and no door." Had I known that I would have looked elsewhere. It essentially confined us to the very small bedroom with a very old TV because any time we left to use the bathroom, or minifridge, which is located in the small space, the "wet bar" that connects the two sleeping areas and bathroom, she woke up. The front door is very noisy and rickety, so our hopes of sneaking out for a drink on the porch while she slept were never met, given the drama that would have ensued. There are multiple lights around the property, that's good, nobody will fall in the dark. The bad? They glare into all the windows like a thousand tiny suns. The blinds are cheap Home Depotesque miniblinds, so I resorted to putting blankets over the blinds. I could read without having a light on inside the rooms at night. If you need a darker space, or have kids, bring black trash bags and blue tape and put the bags up every night. Which seems like a silly thing to do in a room this pricey. Would blackout blinds be a crazy thing to expect with so many lights right outside the room? Also, there is no screen on the master window, which is at a height a child could fall from. Just FYI on that one. There's a locked door in the master bedroom; we quickly found out it connects directly to the attached unit, as we heard the occupants sneezing, coughing and watching TV as they came in later that night. It made us so nervous that our daughter crying would be heard, we became completely neurotic trying to keep her quiet. Which meant I got no sleep, because when she was up at 245 am, because she thought it was daytime due to the blinding lights, I stayed up and played with her so we wouldn't annoy the people in the next room. Good times for our family. We were all tired and cranky. Breakfast was good. If you have a small kid, drive to it, don't walk. It's too hard to schlep all their stuff, the portable high chair, the bibs, the sippy cups, as you walk 20 minutes down a pretty steep hill, and then hike back up with all the stuff again. Unless you want to do that in lieu of the gym, and if that's the case more power to you. There's a ton of parking at 8am, and you'll be up then anyway, as your child wont sleep in the open, bright sleeping alcove. Since we were up between 2 and 4, and then again at 6, we had lots of time to think about the mechanics of getting to breakfast. At home, the kid sleeps from 7pm to 6am without fail. She just can't sleep under a spotlight in a room that leaves her exposed to all the noise and activity. That's with a sound machine and a blanket on the window in the room and window in the door. Why not put her in the bedroom with the door? The whole falling out the window risk, as leaving it open was the only way to get fresh air in the place. And there was nowhere in the room the pack n play would fit unless we moved the bed right up against the not safe window. I guess this room would be ok for two friends, or a family with an older kid, but if you are traveling with a young child, do not book this room unless they put in light blocking shades, a screen on the window, and a door on the small bedroom.

My Mom and I stayed at the Carmel Forest Lodge in January. We relish the memories and time there, even if it took a few months to write this review. First, the staff was remarkably friendly. We did have a few concerns, and they were "Johnny on the spot" to take care of the issues. Guests are able to hang out at the Lamp Lighter Inn where complimentary breakfast and Happy Hour is served. They will also bring breakfast to your room. The service was absolutely remarkable! They went out of their way to handle special requests and made us feel like royalty. We stayed in the Garden House, which has a queen in one room and a twin in a separate area. The cottage is a little small with no sitting room. The lack of having a chair or a place to sit in the open area was our main complaint. We resolved this by bringing a chair in from outside. The location is ideal for walking access to downtown Carmel and not far from the beach.

Breakfast delivered in a basket to your door.

I HIGHLY recommend this place. Our cottage was absolutely adorable, decorated stylish but cozy, and the grounds are great. This inn in located at the top of Ocean Ave, right by the mall, so if you want to be next to the beach, this is not the place for you, but walking all the way down Ocean is great too. They drop a cute little basket of continental breakfast on your doorstep each morning and we stayed in the Ocean Ave Room, which had a fireplace, TV, couch, and breakfast table with a little kitchen nook that had a microwave and mini fridge and a few dishes. This place really captures the magic of Carmel. We will stay here again, for sure. There is only one staff person that is around, but not really anyone else. You have to go down to Lamplighter in (at the bottom of Ocean) for any services, but it's not a big deal and they are really helpful. They do wine and cheese receptions in the evenings (don't get too excited, the wine is meh and the cheese is like store bought cheddar, haha) but it's cute. TIP: This place is also owned by Lamplighter Inn. They do really great specials every Spring. If you call, they will let you know what the deal is. They also do last minute deals at huge discounts if they have vacancies.

This is a lovely and affordable place to stay in Carmel. It's immaculate, quaint and comfortable with a separate livingroom, mini fridge, microwave and toaster. Continental breakfast provided daily. Friendly staff and lovely grounds to relax on Adirondack chairs, tables for picnics, within one block of shops.

The staff was warm and welcoming, and the happy hour with wine, cheese, and fruit was a great touch. The courtyard with the stone fire pit and waterfall is beautiful and makes the whole place feel extra inviting. You also really can't beat the location--it's an easy walk to the village, shops, restaurants, galleries, and the beach. Our room was updated, very clean, and well-appointed with a fireplace, large TV, microwave, fridge, and a nicely renovated bathroom. Now for the downsides... Carmel happened to be in a heat wave while we were there, and the room was HOT. There's no AC, and the tiny fan they gave us barely made a difference. It definitely made sleeping uncomfortable. But the biggest disappointment by far was the breakfast. For the price you're paying per night, it was honestly shocking how underwhelming it was. The only protein option was hard-boiled eggs (and if you don't eat eggs, you're out of luck). Everything else felt like the bare minimum--mediocre toast, bagels, croissants, granola, yogurt, etc. The yogurt was so watery we couldn't even eat it, and the rest was just very basic and forgettable. We did appreciate that it was delivered directly to our room. Overall, we did enjoy the stay because of the charm, location, and friendly staff, but the heat and especially the breakfast were definite letdowns. We'd consider coming back, but with much lower expectations for the food--and definitely not during a heat wave.

The downsides and probably dealbreakers for us is the noise-you can hear everyone talking, closing doors, etc. The actual bed mattress feels old and isn't very comfortable. The WiFi is spotty too.Put double paned windows in, better WiFi and a new mattress and you'd have it! Unfortunately we won't be staying here again. Back to the candle light we go.

We booked one of the double rooms with a fireplace. While the room itself was fine, the walls and ceilings are extremely thin. From around 9pm to 1:00 AM, we could clearly hear footsteps from the room above us, along with conversations. It didn't seem like the guests upstairs were being intentionally disruptive -- it felt more like an issue with how the property is built and the lack of sound insulation. We did call the front desk and asked if they could notify the guests upstairs. After that, they were more mindful of their steps, which we appreciated, but we could still hear them trying to whispering. We chose this property because we were looking for a peaceful place to rest, reset, and enjoy quiet evenings. Unfortunately, that was not our experience. For the amount we paid for a weekend stay, we expected much better soundproofing and overall comfort. Sadly, we won't be returning or recommending this property to our family or friends.

Le Petit Pali in Carmel is a bit of a paradox. On one hand, it's absolutely adorable. On the other…read morehand... well, let's just say the experience doesn't always live up to the Pinterest board. First, the good stuff. The design is fantastic. Whoever did the interiors clearly knows what they're doing. It's charming, colorful, layered with patterns, vintage touches, cute wallpapers, cozy fireplaces. You can tell a talented designer was involved. The vibe is very "European seaside inn meets California boutique hotel." It's stylish without feeling pretentious. The staff was also great. Friendly, welcoming, and helpful. The location is excellent too. You're within walking distance of everything in Carmel, including the beach and restaurants. Now... the reality check. The property itself is basically a refurbished old motel. And while the designers did a heroic job dressing it up, you can still feel the motel bones underneath. I saw another reviewer call it "lipstick on a pig," and honestly that description is painfully accurate. The walls are paper thin. If your neighbor sneezes, you'll probably say "bless you." Our front door was close to parking and we barely slept as there was so much commotion and noise overall. Parking? Technically there is parking, but it's the kind of parking where you feel like you just won the lottery if you get a spot. Breakfast is advertised as "complimentary champagne continental breakfast," which sounds fancy until you realize it's basically coffee and a pastry, or maybe a soft boiled egg and yogurt. It's more "snack before real breakfast" than actual breakfast. Rooms look cute but are surprisingly impractical. There's basically nowhere to unpack. No storage. No space in the bathroom for toiletries. It feels like the designer won the battle but functionality lost the war. Very uncomfortable. Tech-wise the rooms are stuck somewhere around 1990s. The TV is very old school and you can't stream your own subscriptions. There's also no HVAC system or fan, which is be very surprising for a boutique hotel at this price point. They market themselves as pet friendly, but it didn't really feel that way. Yes, they allow dogs, but it costs $150 and there were zero dog amenities waiting in the room. No bowl, no bed, no treat, nothing. So where does that leave us? If you love design and want a cute, Instagram-friendly place in a great location, you'll probably enjoy it. But for the price they charge, it feels grossly overpriced. For what you actually get, this feels more like a $250 a night stay at very best, not the premium boutique pricing they're asking. In short: beautiful design, great location, lovely staff... but underneath the pretty wallpaper it's still an old motel 6 trying very hard to be something else... and failing. We will definitely find a better place next time in Carmel.

Check-in was lovely and welcoming, and we were offered a complimentary glass of sparkling wine, which set a nice tone. They offer complimentary continental breakfast in the morning and a hosted happy hour with wine and beer in the early evening. The staff running both were consistently friendly and attentive, and the quality of the snacks was very good. The community area was small but cozy and there's enough room there to crack open your laptop or read a book whatever you want to do. Evening cookies delivered to your room are also a charming touch. Cleanliness was ok but could be improved. The shower grout had visible mold, which is not something you expect at a hotel in this category. Housekeeping also felt a bit surface-level -- for example, couch pillows weren't straightened when the room was serviced. Small things, first world problems, I know. Storage is a primary area where the rooms fall short. While there were a few drawers, the closet is very small -- essentially enough to hang a handful of shirts. With suits, dresses, and winter coats, there simply wasn't anywhere to put anything, and we ended up draping clothes all over the furniture, which took away from the otherwise beautiful room. Given the generous size of the room, this feels like something management could easily improve (hooks? Coat rack? Armoire?). Also, the nightstands, while attractive, don't pull much weight functionally. There were three small drawers in the room and that was it. We clearly noted we were traveling with a teenager and needed the daybed prepared. Despite that, we arrived short towels and without bedding for the daybed and had to request both. And of course there's no storage in the room so we had to look at extra pillows and bedding piled up in a corner on the floor during our stay. The following day, we again had to ask for a third set of towels. Even the evening cookies initially came up short (two instead of three). Every issue was corrected quickly and politely when mentioned, but ideally guests shouldn't need to keep flagging these things. To be honest, this is not a particularly family oriented hotel, and has much more of a couples vibe, but that's kind of Carmel in general. The bed was also not particularly comfortable for us. The linens were lovely, but the mattress itself was quite firm. That's just a personal preference. TBH the hide a bed was actually softer! In-room amenities were fine. There's a cute small fridge stocked with snacks for purchase (we removed them and used it for our own items). There's no microwave. And there is no coffee in the room -- only tea. While I understand the theme, most guests expect coffee, or at least the option of both, especially at this price point. The gas fireplace was awesome as Carmel is always cold. The hotel is dog-friendly, which we appreciated, though you do pay a premium for your furry friend. Given that, I was surprised there weren't more thoughtful pet touches -- you have to ask for a dog bowl, and there were no treats, dog bed, or similar amenities. The hotel itself felt quiet, which we liked. However, if accessibility is a concern, note that the upstairs rooms do not appear to have elevator access. The location is excellent -- an easy walk to downtown Carmel, shops, and restaurants. Parking can be a bit of a challenge if you plan to come and go because there is no lot - all street parking in a residential area with a lot of parking restrictions during the day, but once parked, it's very walkable. Overall, Petit Pali on 8th is a lovely, well-designed hotel with genuinely nice staff and a great location. With a smidge more attention to housekeeping and storage, it could easily justify its price. Since no one asked for feedback at checkout, I'm sharing it here. I would absolutely consider staying again next time we go to Carmel and I do recommend this location.
