We loved our stay at Big Sur Lodge! There is a lot of history in this location and you can start your hikes from the Lodge's main building. The cabins are a little bit of a walk to the Lodge so I recommend driving and parking by the Lodge start your hike. Cabins aren't world-class but are certainly cozy cabins that immerse you right into nature! Not all rooms are close enough to WiFi and not all areas here have cell service so plan accordingly! On Check-out, the same staff member presented the checkout key bucket without a Thank you or any appreciation. Overall, a poor and robotic experience at the Reception Desk. The room while being a Deluxe King Room, was poorly furnished. It lacked any sense of warmth. The closet was missing the door. It looked unattractive. We loved our stay here. We had the lodge with a gas fireplace and the kitchen. The lodges are very spacious. They strike a nice balance of rustic and remodeled in the interior. I was surprised at the quality of the kitchen - you can definitely cook a full meal and bake some cookies in there. The main lodge is super cozy and serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner. If you want a bite to eat somewhere else there are a few surrounding restaurants. Or of course, bring your own ingredients to cook with. Staff are very accomodating. It's our 2 years wedding anniversary. We're always here at big sur. We always stay at the campground where my in-laws are the camp hosts, but this is the first time we stayed at big sur lodge. The room is cozy with dining room, living room and kitchen, you have access to a fridge, stove and microwave. Only thing is no TV. Their purpose is you to be with nature and focus with the family, which i like. If you want to get out of the civilization and forget about things, this is the place you can go. This place is zero frills. Go into it knowing that and I think expectations won't exceed reality. It's funny, I went into it knowing that but after looking the website I thought, oh maybe it'll be better than I thought?! Nope, lol, I was right the first time. We checked in, our cabin was ready so we were ready to get settled. The room has a small fridge, a couch and coffee table/ottoman, bed (or course) desk and chair, nightstands, and rack to put luggage on. There was a box fan which was helpful because the room felt like it got stuffy each day by midday. There is a skylight in the room which is pretty nice to give natural light and add to the vibes of being in the park under the trees. It's cool that the lodge is in Pfeiffer state park. It is walkable to several trails right out your door. I actually loved that in the cabins there is no cell service so you can truly unplug. If you need service there is a business center near the pool or in the lobby. The store on site is really nice. A good mix of fun souvenirs and nice little market for snacks, staples, etc. Restaurant is also on site, we had dinner one of the nights. It was fine and about what I expected, but it's not killing it, lol. Be prepared to be eaten alive by mosquitoes if you are prone to that. After dinner I felt like I was dinner for them! lol I loved the location, it was comfortable, but for the price I'd have loved just a bit more in the room. This spot was a nifty little stop for food, restroom, gifts/souvenirs about an hour south of Monterey. It's literally off the scenic Pacific Coast Highway - turn at Pfeiffer Big Sur Road - and follow the signs to the lodge. The good and the bad I guess is that it's a shared lot - for both hotel guests and visitors - I actually had to circle the lot a few times when I realized even the farthest out spots were taken. Connected to the lodge is a bit of a cafe (I didn't eat anything here since I had a full lunch before leaving Monterey), gift shop (picked up lots of unique souvenirs here), and a rustic-like lounge area - complete with a Tic-Tac-Toe tabletop game. Prices for food, souvenirs were reasonable considering the tourist-heavy area. Cell reception was a bit bleak - but that's understandable, considering where you are. Nearby are one of the few gas stations in the area - so make sure to top off your tank before continuing on your adventure! read more

We were in there a while looking around and noticed how great she was with everyone who came through... top notch customer service, and a 10/10 personality. Terrible customer sevice. You need to self service your food. You can only pick up the menu on the counter and then look at it and order. Which delays the order process. They could easily hang it somewhere else (ok spreadable way) that you can see the options while waiting for your order (which was 10 minutes for us). Then you go and sit yourself. All (not exaggerating) the tables had piles of dirty plates from previous customers. Gross. We picked a table and set staring at the dirty plates for 15 minutes. A waiter finally came and started cleaning the plates one by one. Starting from tables that there were no customers (all while we were staring at the mess on our tables). I had to ask the waiter to maybe clean ours first (instead of going with a sequential order). I mean which other waiter would do that? If there are customers who sat on a table, you need to make sure they are taken care of first. You don't need to be genius to think about that. And the to top that, when we finished our food, there were still some left over plates from previous customers on our table. Cause after I asked, our waiter cleaned some of them but not all . It was surreal. Definitely understaffed. Won't visit again. Food was mediocre the best as well. read more

Was a nice lodging space, but ran into some issues that could have been avoided by the staff. Woke up in the morning to no water . Had to find out through maintainence workers that the water was turned off. I called the front desk and they apologized but said it was preplanned and did not offer any help. Very neglected outdated rooms. All the caulking and trims were rotten in bathroom Wall heater is so loud nobody could sleep, every 20 minutes it would have this real loud bang extremely loud and woke me up every 20 minutes.!!! Upon entry noticed a big black widow in the bathroom window. My oldest son had to take the fold out couch, which was miserable super thin mattress. He said he could fill every spring I didn't take enough pictures, but it was bad. Luckily we walked in to check out the dinner menu and they told us we were closing in one hour. I believe there is two fireplaces, but none were lit. Nothing to make it even somewhat inviting.!? No communication before we arrived which we booked for two nights they were closed the first night as they had no power. So we would've had nowhere else to eat as there is nowhere else to eat for miles!!! I have to say the staff was not that friendly very helpful! Every time I walked in the building, they looked like they were annoyed that we were even there. We were the only ones in the building for dinner, which is always scary.!!!! Dinner was great. Carpet and furniture were full of stains, and likely hadn't been cleaned in years (toenail clippings found on carpet). Walls, especially around the switch plates and doorknobs were filthy. Shower water varied between freezing cold or scalding hot. There were holes in the window screens that allowed insects to get in. We were not expecting luxury accommodations, however, the level of uncleanliness was not at all what we anticipated. My only regret about staying here was not staying long enough! My family and I took a trip to Monterey and spent one night at Big Sur Lodge. Finding parking to check in was kind of a pain but that's my only complaint. Front desk was super inviting and staff were so friendly! There's a shop next to the check in desk with souvenirs and any last minute items you may need. Our lodge was so darling! The room was clean, it was huge, and the beds were comfy. The balcony had a lovely view of the trees but honestly, anywhere you looked was quite the sight to see. I also loved that they included a park pass with our stay. I'm a little surprised by the overall rating. It's about the expectations. This is Big Sur. So you will get the wilderness and nature experience. The rooms are small but feel like cabins. The main lodge is in a different section (parking can be challenging depending on time of day). But, the Lodge is also walking distance from the Trail. We did the nearby trail in the rain (using some plastic garbage bags to cover us). Each cabin/room has its own parking. Pets are also allowed and trash bins/bags are available. I love Big Sur and would come back to this property for more nature Hiking. read more

I liked the property/lodge overall. Restaurant, coffee shop and gift shop were great. There are some trails nearby the lobby, plenty of parking, and good overall location next to other trails and restaurants. I'd say that's about where it ends. I thought the lodge was very overpriced for what you got. Very basic cabin, didn't feel very homey. Lipstick stain on one of the mugs made me question the cleanliness of everything else. Bed was not uncomfortable, but also not comfortable. I didn't sleep too well. Not entirely sure the heater in our unit worked, although it may have been something I just did wrong. Ultimately what turned me off was the pungent smell of marijuana that seeped through the walls of our cabin overnight, and woke me up from my sleep. I get that marijuana is legal in California, but I shouldn't have to smell it within the confines of the cabin I paid nearly $500 a night to sleep in. My neighbors must have been smoking either inside their cabin or outside on the porch. The smell makes me super nauseous and I felt like it was in my face. I woke up exhausted and cranky. Smoking should not be allowed on this property but apparently it is and it can get into your bedroom. There is zero wifi on this property with the exception of the conference center. No service in lobby or hotel rooms. I didn't really care for that. No TV in cabins either. I also felt like the staff generally were not very friendly. Young man at check in and a middle aged man at the coffee shop were a bit surley. I also did not care for the late check in time of 4 pm. I barely got to "enjoy" being in the cabin. So -- overall I'd say this is a great place to stop in and visit, but not stay. Maybe if it was cheaper, that would take some of the sting off all of the negatives. Free pass for the 3 parks. Going to the cabin was near by but it was super narrow! One car at a time going in and out. Place was spacious and clean. Sad I don't have signal or WiFi. A very well maintained state park. So much history here. We stayed in a cabin that felt like a hotel. Drove through the campsites, which all looked clean and spacious. And some right on the river. There is a pool, charming restaurant/cafe, lounge, and gift shop. There is an array of hiking trails. Some great for families, others more challenging. Our favorite was the Big Sur River Gorge trail where you walk through the river and over boulders to get to the crystal clear swimming hole. Five stars for all of the staff. Absolutely amazing experience. Breathtaking view, freshest air, great staff, comfortable room and good food! 1. Reservation: required. We got an insanely expensive lodge because of not planning ahead and that was the only cabin available. 2. Cabins are spacious, truly very large! In my case, our cabin could have easily housed 10 people, just cause I can, I slept or laid on every bed just to try them all. The cabin was too large for us, but better than being crammed, right? Shower takes a while to warm up, but still good. 3. Wildlife: You will hear birds singing, some other animals, I don't even know what they are make noise. There was a HUGE spider as big as my open palm in the shower. Panicked and screamed, but still managed to put it in the champagne bucket and threw it out. No spider was harmed in this story!!! What a thrill that was. I worried that my neighboring cabins thought I was either having an insanely satiating adult time or being killed. Guess what? Cabins are too far from each other for anyone to hear whatever was happening! The whole time the spider comes close to us or moves around, I was screaming while trying to capture it. This place gave me a forever memory.. involving a spider of all things.. good thing I have no arachnophobia. In short, this place will give you a new memory for sure. My husband and I thought we'd only be staying one night in Big Sur, which unfortunately meant that the nice place (Glen Oaks) we stayed last time didn't show up in our search and we ended up at Big Sur Lodge instead. The first room we stayed at would've been ok for an overpriced $150/night, but since it was twice that, it felt like much more of a dingy POS from the start. We weren't surprised by lack of WiFi in the room, but there isn't even WiFi in the lodge, which ended up being hugely inconvenient because of Nicole at the front desk not wanting to do her job. We were hoping to stay an extra night because of extenuating circumstances and Nicole told us nothing was available until Sunday (4 days later), so we had to pack up all of our stuff (which was much more than usual for a Big Sur trip because we were traveling from Japan with a stop in LA) and go elsewhere to use WiFi to find somewhere to stay. Turns out the only place with availability was Big Sur Lodge and we were able to book the exact same kind of room we had been at the night before. When we checked in, another girl had to come help us because Nicole was busy ignoring customers and looking at Facebook. The second room was somehow even worse than the first. The blinds didn't close at all in the bathroom and there was a bunch of stuff left on the counter from lightbulb maintenance. There was also no hand soap. The blinds in the main room didn't close all the way because of an air conditioning unit connected to the window. Can't recommend avoiding this place enough when there are actually nice places to stay with friendly staff in the area (though I will say the girl we interacted with at the Big Sur Lodge gift shop was very kind!). read more

Pros Your cabin is in the redwoods The lodge restaurant is beautiful with a lovely window that looks out into the redwoods, the gift shop is nice. The beds are very comfy with nice linens and comfy pillows of four on each bed. They have a refrigerator, fireplace and coffee maker. It is quiet and the maid service is great. Free beer flight per night. Nice furniture in room. Cons Cabin is in need of paint. No one likes looking at scuffed old moldy base boards in the bathroom where you have to view it daily. No WiFi uggg not even at the restaurant. No microwave. The restaurant is very expensive, way over priced and not great. My husband went in to partake of the beer flight and he was told that it's their choice what beer you will drink. There was nothing about this our first night and he questioned saying there is nothing about it on the ticket. He can't drink IPA's the server got mad and was rude. We had a two room cabin for three nights. The second room was freezing. They need a second heater in there. I brought a heating pad that saved me or we would have had to leave. With these things fixed we would have given a high score but it can ruin a trip to find these things. Fernwood has a chef quality restaurant, eat there! PROS: Amazing location & setting, wonderful dinner & dinner service, the well-stocked fireplace wood CONS: (1) Extremely paper-thin shared walls -- they need to flag or warn about this online -- heard every cutlery clank, personal conversation & song lyric, plus overwhelming cooking smells from our next-door neighbors. We couldn't taste our dinner because it tasted like next door's dinner. Be prepared for that possibility if you plan to cook in your unit. (2) Checkout isn't until 11am but the card keys stop working hours earlier, by 8am. We were loading up our car and got locked out before we were done (suitcase still inside room). Drove up & down the hills to try resolving this TWICE to no avail--they just told us to call a phone number and wait for someone, when they well know there is NO CELL SERVICE in the area! (And they did NOT offer to call for us :/) We flagged a maintenance person on our own, luckily, and he let us back into our room where we were able to retrieve our last piece of luggage. But a waste of too much time & avoidable stress. (3) Finally, the woman who greeted us at the front desk on Day 2 was having some major grumpy issue, looked very annoyed at our question about trails. Booked this place along the Big Sur as we wanted to see everything the Big Sur had to offer and not rush through everything. We were coming from LA and headed towards SF, so this was the perfect overnight stay. For the price and location, this was a good deal. Since the lodge is located right in front of the Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park entrance, you're literally in the middle of no where. With that said, don't expect to have any cell service. Also within the lodges there are no technologies in any of the rooms. No wifi (unless you're in the main cabin or community space, but spotty at best), no TV, no electronic alarm clocks, literally you and nature. Oh yeah, no A/C, but they have a heater. They do supply a huge fan for you to plug into an outlet. Although it was just the two of us, the smallest cabin they had consisted of two beds. During our stay, I noticed the wood floors were not clean as I like to walk around barefoot and the bottom of my feet would be black. We were also not very careful with opening the backdoor to our personal patio, as we let in mosquitoes and other flying critters, so be careful with that. Waking up the next day was super pleasant by nature's alarm clock, Turkey calls at 5AM. read more

We had an unfortunate experience with poor customer service at the Big Sur Lodge in August 2024, with truly surprising results. We realized the first night of our stay that the heat in the room wasn't working. It's pretty chilly in Big Sur at night, even in August, so that was unpleasant. The next day, we received a text from the management asking how our stay was going, and I reported the problem. The clerk told me they would send someone to check on it. I texted again when we got back to the hotel that afternoon, after I realized that no one had checked the heater. No response. I reported it again when we checked out the next morning, and was assured that the manager would contact us to discuss it. No contact. I responded to a survey, describing the problem, and asking again to be contacted. No contact. I wrote a letter to the manager, explaining the problem, and requesting contact. No response. Wow. Could you describe worse customer service? There were a couple of other minor complaints (for example, there was supposed to be bottled water in the room; there wasn't any), but since I couldn't get them to respond to the first complaint about the heat I don't hold out much hope that they'll respond about any other complaints. What's interesting is that Big Sur took a big hit during and after the pandemic (so much so, that we received various solicitations from a number of the local hotels). You would think that a hotel in a remote location that suffered so much as a result of the pandemic would be looking to make their customer's stays at least tolerable, if not comfortable. I actually really like this hotel so I am truly sad that their customer service was poor enough to warrant this review. Back to the Big Sur River Inn for us. read more

We decided to camp in Big Sur last minute for a M-W in October. Could not get a campsite. Decided to still go and rent a room. Expensive. $300 plus a night even with a promotion. Room was comfortable.Basic. Loved firewood each day to build a fire every night. Deck is shabby. Deck view was poor. But overall area of the lodge grounds is lovely. Gorgeous redwoods. We loved the Valley View hike. Location was perfect to explore all of Big Sur. Loved the spectacular nearby beaches at the state parks. Loved leaving lodge area each evening to drive 15 minutes south for roadside pull off and spectacular sunsets. We bought most of our food at a market in Cambria. Had a cooler and small fridge. Big Sur is expensive. We do recommend nearby Big Sur Bakery for out of this world pastries. read more

Definitely a place to stay to get away. I was happy there are no TVs, no AC (but fans), no phones or alarm clocks. Definitely a way to unplug, especially when cell service is limited. The rooms were nice (although shifting something awful), and it was extremely quiet, considering the place was sold out. The lodge was cute, but I was sad that due to COVID I couldn't sit inside by the fire. The staff was more than friendly, and it was a nice stay. I loved that you could walk to the lodge and trails from your cabin. The only things I would change are- they need more local beer at the café (there was 1 local- the rest were like Bud Light, Corona...meh). And the bathrooms were very outdated. Could use a remodel and a good scrubbing (our blinds were bent, so you could see in and out of the bathroom and there was no way to cover it with a towel). Overall I loved the quietness of it. I had a very great stay- the location is awesome, family-friendly, and even saw some "wild" turkeys. I say wild lightly, as you can tell people feed them as they come right up! P.S. I absolutely love this place and will definitely be back, but, this stay was definitely hit and miss. The layout and location of the cottage was fantastic. The cottage had 2 queen beds and was more like a one bedroom apartment without a kitchen. It was roomy and comfortable. The cottages don't have a telephone or Wi-Fi and there's no cell service in the area. Which is ok but, the Lodge was closed when we got there and I had no way to call the after hours number for help when we ran into trouble. We arrived to find all the windows in the cottage open and a moldy smell. When I tried closing the windows all of the locks were broken. I ended up putting the fireplace tools in the window to secure them so we could sleep. The cottage had a fireplace and a deck with patio chairs. The pillows were super cozy, the mattress not as much. The bathroom vanity is nice but, the bathroom itself turned out to be the source of the mold. The closet was full of stuff, an Iron, ironing board, fan extra blankets, etc. There was also a hairdryer. The cottages don't have TV's but, they do have cards and board games which my daughter and I played. There was also a mini fridge (ours had open items from the last guest in it). Brunch at the Lodge the next day was delicious and all of the staff were super helpful. read more

I almost didn't book this place because of the mixed reviews. What a mistake that would have been. I rented the Queen room with the fireplace and refrigerator and it was fabulous - spacious and clean, and the location can't be beat. Recently came here for a weekend get-a-away and I LOVED it! Was it pricey? Absolutely. Would I come here again? YES! I got to the lodge almost 4 hours before my room was ready but the staff let me check in early and gave me a pass to get into all the state parks, so that I could kill some time before my room was ready. Very sweet of her and she also gave us recommendations for local hikes. The cabin itself was so roomy! Everything was clean and there was wood provided for the fire place. The bed was also surprisingly comfortable! We didn't have any wifi but that wasn't a problem, we didn't really need it. Spent the night lighting the fireplace ( it was our first time making one, so that was fun). The location of the lodge is really what sold it for us. Everything was nearby and super convenient to us! We were able to go to Andrew Molera state park for a 8 mile hike and be back in our room within 10 minutes of finishing it. Changed into our bathing suits and in less than 20 minutes we were able to get into the river in Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park to relax our sore muscles. We wouldn't have been able to do that had we stayed elsewhere. The beds were also SUPER comfortable, which was a big plus. I can't say any thing about the food at the lodge since we brought all of our food. But the mini fridge kept our perishables from going bad and the ice machine was always full which helped since I used it to fill up our water bladder to keep our water cold while hiking. Overall the price was well worth it! We saved time since we didn't have to drive far anywhere, the room was clean, the views were amazing, the fresh fire wood was nice, working ice machine, and getting access to all 3 state parks was wonderful! read more

So this an update from my previous review. You'll notice the 5 stars. Oh and it'll be a gooooood reason it is. Moving on. This review is for room 9. Which has a fireplace and two queen beds with two rooms and a living room area. They make you feel VERY welcomed here. The staff is absolutely OUTSTANDING. The rooms are updated, very clean and very well taken care of. I will also be writing a review on their restaurant. But this one is about the lodge/rooms. Upon walking up to the door of the room I noticed the deck was well maintained. Walking into the room it took me by surprise right away that it was VERY clean and well maintained. The room had a coffee maker, one sink, no bathtub but a great shower. The shower works well, the water is hot and the pressure of the water is great. The fireplace was clean and ready for the next guests. The beds were all fresh. I took the blankets off and inspected them to make sure there was no bed bugs or anything else. They were clean. The floors were vacuumed. Even under the beds had no dust or anything. Oddly I felt like it was TO nice if that's such a thing. But in Big Sur you're sort of use to the rustic cabin in the woods type of feel. And I'm 100% fine with that. I come here to be apart of nature and enjoy the scenery, the sound of the trees with the wind and the stream. It also might be the fact that we got very lucky on how not busy it was. There was absolutely 0 people staying anywhere near us. And I do believe that helped A LOT with how quiet it was and how nice our stay was. Had it been different with a full house of people I don't think I would of had such a good time. Overall though I will say this. The staff here has gotten MUCH better. The kindness and professionalism displayed by them is at the out most highest regard I can say from what it previously was. There was 3 staff members I remember by name in particular. Ashley. Which was a server in the restaurant that I will speak about in my updated review for the restaurant separate from this. Don't worry, everything about this server was good. Ernesto. He seems to take care of the rooms, maintenance, trash and well overall... a little bit of everything. He had an excellent attitude towards us as guests and a good vibe. His wife also works here to and she's a wonderful person as well. Would I recommend staying here? YES BUT I would 100% ask how busy it'll be. if you want the best experience here make sure it isn't busy. Or less busy for that matter. read more
