We booked a cabin recently, received confirmation, and showed up after hours. The campground is nice enough and in a great location, but when we showed up at 9 pm our name was posted on a white board telling us where to go. Our assigned cabin was not made up. No sheets blankets or pillows on the bed, musty/dank smell, refrigerator was on the patio for some strange reason, there was a space heater left running in the kitchen sink, random box of dishes in the corner, and we had zero clue what to do. There was nobody to help us, reception was spotty so we couldn't make a call, and ultimately we left. Clearly this cabin should not have been rented. We drove 45 minutes to a hotel and had to pay $600/night because there were no other options nearby. Worst of all, after emailing the manager about what happened and nicely requesting a refund, we got no response. No apology, no acknowledgment, no refund, nothing. We had to contact the credit card company to reverse the charge. Not good. Not well run. Stay away. read more

My family and I just got home from staying here in Cabin 2. We had a really good time and this campground is nice but there are things to point out. 1) The price of this cabin was 300$ a night with a 2 night minimum. Which is definitely expensive but it is Big Sur so your paying for the location. 2) This campground doesn't have much to do onsite within walking distance. Everything is driving distance away, nothing is walking distance. 3) The inside of the cabin was really nice. Nice heater, nice bathroom and shower. The hot water never ran out. 4) I highly recommend bringing enough wood for you to last the whole time. A bundle of wood (6 pieces) here is 14$. Also, they sold us wet wood so it didn't light easy and needed a bunch of fire starter to get it to light. 5) Send emails for questions, they never answered my phone calls prior to the stay. Other than minor things, this place is well kept up and it's a nice place to camp. The tent sites are right on the river which is a beautiful spot to camp. The campground was empty because it's December but that made it more peaceful. I would camp here again but I would try tent camping by the river. read more

The campground was a bit on the pricey side, we stayed two nights with three people (brought our tent), and the total came to just over $250. Overall, it was a pleasant experience, though I'm not sure I'd return. The hot water was a nice touch. I brought my own coffee but decided to try their complimentary option; as soon as I hit the dispenser, I could tell it was overly diluted. It looked more like tea and tasted just as weak. I'd suggest making it stronger, guests can always add water if they prefer. Definitely family-friendly! read more

Stunning campsite in Big Sur on the Big Sur river. Cabins were quaint and well equipped with a fire pit, picnic table, heater inside, etc. , All you need for a cozy glamping weekend. Loved the campsite amenities including the camp store, swimming hole, and basketball courts. Bathrooms were probably as good as they could be but not much hot water in the shared bathrooms. We visited this campground 21 years ago and came back the week after Christmas. We were able to get a site directly on the water in front of the camp store. So peaceful, beautiful and serene! The new owners are super friendly and helpful and available whenever we needed them. We were in our 19' Sprinter van camper and we parked across our camp site so our awning went out towards the water and fire pit. Owner offered us a free amp converter (we were going to purchase one), but she allowed us to use theirs while we stayed. They will freshly brew complimentary coffee upon request! Showers/toilets were clean and worked great! We will be back the next time we're in No. Cal!! read more

We love this place. We have a 16' trailer, and our friends brought their 29' trailer. We were upgraded to sites right on the river, which was lovely. It's small and homey. No sewer hookups, but there are showers and bathrooms that are just fine (shower is coin operated, 3 minutes for 25 cents). It's the staff that really make this place awesome. Pam is a hoot and makes you feel like you're family. We got the vibe that this is a place you come back to and are welcomed as friends, and we really hope to do that. It's a refreshing change from the big RV resorts with lots of concrete. Don't worry about the bridge situation- if the river is splashing over it to where it's dangerous, staff wouldn't book your stay. read more

Drove by here twice in the last few years , waiting for an opportunity to book a stay as they book up fast. We would have taken an RV spot, a cabin or anything available because of how great we thought it would be BUT looks are deceiving. When one tent availability opened up for a site, didn't matter where at this point, we booked a night and thank goodness we didn't go for 2 or 3 nights. At check in, as some stated, the female camp host made that initial experience odd. The way she spoke to my husband seemed very dismissive but before this became unpleasant after a 5 hour drive, I decided to speak with the host and she was pleasant so maybe she just had an off moment. Done and time to drive to our site. An immediately, weed was in the air and we "lucked" out by being able to get a strong whiff of it every hour or so. Yes, it's legal in CA but not really the "fresh air" we were chasing. It was busier than what we are used to. Having the freedom of boondocking or finding campgrounds with plenty of space apart is what we are used to. These spots, however , were close to one another (as most campgrounds are) but it became a bit loud when different sites played music, were drinking and it felt more of a block party of which we could all see and hear everyone so we decided to get our very "old" feeling selves to bed early. Made breakfast and couldnt help but over hear an angry husband arguing with his wife and threatening to slap a B cause he don't care where he's at, while the wife argued back that she would slap him harder and don't give a....OMG this was just NOT my idea of a nature getaway at all. Lol We were so happy to leave the very next morning and thankful we never booked a longer stay here as we had initially imagined would be a "dream". If you're planning a group trip, a stream where the kids can play (shallow river more of a stream) and a place that has more smoke from weed than fire pits, then by all means. ..come here during summer haha! This may be the spot you're looking for. To be fair, every freaking dog we saw was on their best behavior (even the ones who were off leash and unsupervised) and because I enjoyed seeing dogs is why I gave this place 3 stars instead of one. I can only account for one night/day stay here so I can't knock it down because I'm sure some travelers had a better experience. Too bad, we're Definitely not one of them. This is our second time here and we used all of the amenities in our cabin. On this visit: - We stayed in Cabin 11 (pet friendly, but we didn't bring our dog) - Private bathroom with a small shower (the shower head is a little high) - Kitchenette with an induction stove - Small dorm fridge - Sink - Dishes, utensils, coffee maker, tea kettle available - Ask the office for free coffee (Note: The coffee packs make 4 cups of coffee) - Parking in front of the cabin. - Gas grill, patio furniture on deck - Queen sized bed, but if you lay down and look up, there's a small glass ledge so you can see the trees. We lucked out and saw the Persid Meteor showers. Because our cabin is next to the ADA cabin, you have to zig zag your way up to the cabin. The cabin is adjacent to the porta potties, restrooms, laundry and close proximity to the general store. The campground is along the river (bonus). There's access to both campsites next to Riverside - Big Sur Campground and Cabins and Ripplewood. We've walked through both sites. There's a trail along the river that will take you to Ripplewood Resort. There are some narrow spots, but it's the quickest way to get to either Road House Big Sur or Ripplewood Cafe. The woman who checked us in had a bit of an attitude, but both guys that were in the office were very helpful. read more

We stayed in Cabin #1 for my birthday and we LOVED every single minute of our stay. The staff is friendly, the Sushi Jawn food truck on site is delicious, the river is a blast to go tubing in, and the overall ambience is just so awesome and laidback. We enjoyed hanging out by the fire each night and waking up to the sounds of birds in the morning. There are many beautiful blue birds around which were darling! The only drawback was that firewood was not provided. We stayed at Glen Oaks previously and assumed that this cabin would provide firewood as well. Instead, it's sold separately at the camp store for a hefty price, so we ended up picking up some from Home Depot. Overall - our stay was wholesome and we recommend it to anyone who wants to getaway and unwind. read more

Came to Big Sue super last minute and this place had a same day opening. We booked that day and stayed in Cabin 9, and the cabin itself was very cozy! The staff there were super welcoming and very chill. We were able to check in any time which is great. The store was super convenient, fairly priced and complementary coffe/tea was great! It was a little on the pricey side and the wifi was kinda meh (since their satellites weren't set up yet), but the showers and bathrooms were clean and nice to use. I stayed here for only one night, but I wish it was many more. I can't speak for the campsites because I stayed in a cabin. The cabin was fantastic, I loved the feel of it. The ceiling with the adorable fan was my favorite feature. All of the staff were very friendly, hospitable, and welcoming. As a Monterey native, I think this was the best campground I've ever had the pleasure of experiencing in Big Sur. It's pretty small, but quaint and peaceful which is exactly what I needed. I was able to bring my two dogs, which is mostly what this adventure was for. Cabin #1 has its own deck with a gate so they were contained when needed. My senior dog isn't able to walk much, but she was so happy napping on the deck for her last adventure with me. My other dog had a blast in the river for his first time. Thank you Riverside Campground & staff for making this possible with my pets and helping me make my last memories with my furry best friend. I really don't have any complaints. If I had to pick something out, I'd say I wish there was a little more space around the river to relax. I know this is mother natures doing, so it's not a deal breaker for me. Love this campground! I've been here in 2017 and recently came back during COVID last month, and it's one of my favorite campsites. Big Sur is known for many sight seeing landmarks and its state parks. Maybe you know it for the drive along the wind roads of highway 1 or the picturesque McWay falls or the Bixby bridge. Big Sur is a beautiful place and one would need 3-4 days to truly get the most of what it has to offer. And that's why camping here is such a solid idea. Riverside campground is along the river. Both times we got a site along the river. 14 and river site -which is closest to the entrance meaning you're right there when cars come through. It's not that bad, but if you want a more secluded spot, I highly recommend 14. Both are great though because you only have one neighbor. The river flows so nicely and makes for a relaxing time while you cook and eat a good meal, read a book, chat with loved ones, and cozy up near the fire with a drink. Each site comes with a table and fire ring. The campground allows for RVs, has clean bathrooms and showers, a small shop that carries what you need when you least expect it, and all the necessities too. There are also cabins. If you're considering a trip to Big Sur, or seeking to getaway during these hard times with COVID, then come here. They practice social distancing, enforce mask wearing when you're not in your site, and keep the amenities and shared spaces well maintained and clean. Andrew Molera State Park is up north a bit and Pfeifer State Park is south, so plenty of options for hiking and exploring. I loved both, each offer it's own unique beauty. But explore all of it, and it can be done in 3 days. Beware that with Verizon, I did not have signal at the campground. They have WiFi, but it's slow and maybe of use for sending emails and when you're close to the office, other than that.m, just unplug and enjoy what's around you. I didn't get service until driving north and getting into Carmel, about a 30 minute drive. Please note they fill up fast. If you're planning a trip for 2021, book it now. You have to call to make a reservation. Highly recommend this spot. I love that all of us outdoor camping lovers can still enjoy times like this during the pandemic and so can you. read more

I loved my time at Riverside Campground. Pam, Ernest and others there were very helpful and friendly, making me feel like a welcomed guest and friend. The bathrooms are clean and well-stocked. The camp spaces have shade and light and enough space. There is a camp store if one needs things. The river is lovely and peaceful and since everyone rushes off for their hikes or site-seeing it is quiet and almost private during the day. It is a place to just be and enjoy. Yoga at the river's edge is glorious. I stayed on my way up the coast and then on my way down the coast as well because I liked it so much. Thank you! read more

What an amazing getaway spot! We loaded up the Jeep in preparation for whatever the weekend brought us, and Riverside Campgrounds didn't disappoint. Super easy to find, simple check in with friendly staff and a store on-site for extra wine and firewood was clearly quite a few notches above what we'd had in mind when we left home. Blown away by the campsite (#14)... Fell asleep and woke up to a riffling river that was feet away from our tent. Clean picnic tables, campsite and fire pits were just perfect, as were the potable water spigots scattered about every 2 sites. Super flat tent areas were part of the package no matter what site you get, and you can't go wrong with any of them. Did I mention we slept right next to the Big Sur River? Wow. One thing I'd really like to commend the owners and staff on was the cleanliness of the restrooms and showers. Thank you! And they are free, unlike another well known campground. Lastly, the prices at the store were beyond reasonable. We grabbed a good bottle of wine for $15.99. Try doing that at any other store, inn or campground in Big Sur. Firewood about $10 for an all night bag. Please be aware that they start quiet hour at 10pm. That's when everything starts winding down. We didn't have any issues with other campers being rude, noisy, etc. Riverside was just an excellent place and we'll be back as soon as we can. read more

Omg what an adorable campground. We stayed in Cabin #11 and I loved every minute of it. Huge points for being dog friendly (with a reasonable fee) we were able to get away from the city without the guilt of leaving our pups behind. The cabins are equipped with heat/air conditioning, a queen sized bed, HOT SHOWER, flushable toilet and the most adorable kitchenette. Our patio had a huge gas grill, so we were able to have delicious grilled dinners. Our cabin had a 'guest journal' and I loved pouring over the stories of people who stayed in the cabin and why they decided to stay there. Definitely a great place to recharge and disconnect, or reconnect with your SO. There is no TV, and wifi is available only at the main camp store. Extremely relaxing and serene campground. Had an amazing stay at the Riverside Campgrounds. Greeted with a happy smile and great energy from Pam. Pam was the manager all weekend while we were there and she was so helpful. We stayed on the river that was absolutely beautiful. There is wifi that worked on my laptop that I could "WFH." Not so fast but it did the job, I was able to send emails. Best wifi spot was in front of the office. I would recommend to all my friends and would come back if I make it back out to Big Sur. Easy drive to all our sightseeing sights. Pam made everything very welcoming and actually upgraded us to a larger cabin with no extra cost!! It was very clean and cozy! The only issue I would say was the river going right through the entrance but we made it through And Big Sur campgrounds next door allows campers to exit/arrive through their entrance so it was no problem! Cabin Review of Riverside Campground My wife and I stayed at Cabin #7 of the Riverside Campground (Queen bed, pull out bed, full bath, towels & linens provided). Glamping to the max. I enjoyed my stay here. The cabins have a rustic & old school feel to them. It looks really cool inside. The river is really calm and my daughter loved playing in it. I'll say this, I was a little disappointed in the fire pit; we ended up not using it as it was more like a BBQ grill than an old school "stone fire pit" which I was picturing in my head. Maid service changes towels & linens. There's a general store which has all the necessitates (and even has a respectable craft beer selection); prices were reasonable. The adjacent campsite has a playground 2 mins walk which my kid also enjoyed playing. The location is really cool and it feels like you are in the middle of the forest. Kids & families will love it. We didn't use the public restrooms so I can't comment on them. TIPS -No cell signal in the area. The wifi allows you to text/call, that's pretty much it. -General store has -Food around the area is really expensive, and most of it tastes whatever. I didn't find anything in the area which knocked me off my feet. read more

Big Sur books up fast and can be hard to get a place to stay if you don't plan ahead. Luckily we booked cabin #2 at Riverside and had a great 2 night stay! The lady who was in charge of things was incredibly nice and sold us a ton of firewood for $10. I'm talking enough to last more than 2 nights. The cabin was clean and was exactly what I was hoping for- wooden walls and simple. The heater made it nice at night. The area is beautiful and the campground was a lot of fun. We went tubing down the Big Sur River.. just grabbed 2 tubes from the general store for $12/pop and blew it up with their air pump. You can tube right from the little road that leads from Highway 1 to the campground. It was freezing but worth it! You can also walk to a few other campgrounds and an inn that has a restaurant.. we got burritos there since it was the cheapest food around. Overall a great place- just be sure to make reservations. Some people from up north showed up on the first night we were there in a taxi (STUPID) looking for rooms and they were pretty much getting laughed at whenever they stopped at cabins since there weren't any vacancies. Ps. I'm not sure if I would camp here. Although it is beautiful and you can set up tents along the river there is 0% privacy, no trees really blocking one tent from another, and kids running around/biking everywhere. That's cool if you have a family but if you want your own space you should probably get a cabin. read more

There is no booking system online so you do have to call. Pam reserved the cabin for me and was pleasant to be serviced by. Once at the campsite I was helped out by Pete was gave us the rundown of the place. He was very helpful in answering all my questions. The cabin was a great size and was everything we needed for our stay. Everything was clean and well kept. Despite being right next to the cabin store and campground facilities, we had a lot of privacy. We will be definitely coming back. read more

My wife and I stayed here a few days for my birthday. She surprised me with the trip down and after a beautiful drive down Hwy 1, we arrived and it was just as we hoped. We parked at the office and upon check-in we were greeted by Pam. She was awesome and walked us around and gave us a tour of the grounds. She was such a delightful lady and was very attentive to show us how everything worked. We stayed in cabin 10 and it was just as cozy as my wife had hoped. Pam walked us down to the river to pick out a fire pit so we could enjoy the night sky and the wonder of the water running by. We chatted with Pam about hiking other places to visit during our stay and she was more than helpful. A short drive to Pheiffer State Park then to Pheiffer Beach. I highly recommend this place and we will definitely book again. read more

The negative reviews are all very old and don't represent our experience. We chose this campsite for our first trip in our new rv. We travelled with two other families and stayed in sites #4, #5, and #6. No complaints. The guy at check in was friendly and helpful. A gal came around at 10pm the first night and asked us to turn off our music. It was very, very low, but sound carries and she was just doing her job. We had no problem turning off the music. The sites were well maintained and spacious. The restrooms were always clean and well stocked. Our group has already decided to return! read more

A lot of people drive out to Hwy 1 - not making reservations ahead. During raining season (fall - spring) reservations may be canceled due to hazard road conditions. I've stayed in Big Sur many times (usually at Fernwood Campground) but this time ended up staying here. I WILL NEVER COME BACK. The staff person at the front desk, Sarah, was the worst customer service experience I have ever received. She was on such a power trip which immediately put me on the defense. She even came to our camp site a few hours later and threatened to kick us out because we didn't have good "energy" at check in. After making friends with a few other campers, I discovered that literally all of them had a bad interaction with her at check in. Big Sur Campground and Fernwood are far superior in facilities and customer service. read more

Had an amazing time RV/trailer camping at Riverside. TLDR - awesome gentle River great for inner tubing and river hiking, great camp store, RV sites with water and electric but no sewer. Pros: * The river. This one should be obvious. This is why we came here. This is why everyone else comes here. The river is so calming. When we came in summer it was gentle, calm. Most of it was only 6 in deep with smooth rocks underneath. Perfect for river hiking - bring your water shoes. Also a blast for the kids to ride down on inner tubes, rafts, boogie boards. There are a couple of "rapids" (and when I see rapids I mean like four to five inch miniature drops) to make things exciting for the kids and to ensure that their inner tubes move along the river. This really is like a lazy river except truly in the wild. You can even put a camping chair in the water and sit there and let your feet feel the gentle current which is so relaxing. * RV camping - we stayed in RV site #4 which is right across from the camp store. The website makes it clear but just a reminder here that there is no sewer or dumping. Not even a communal one. The office gave me a handy sheet with a few dumping stations that are within 45-75 minutes away. If you are heading north I like to dump at the Chevron in Salinas which allows you to dump for free if you fill up gas. Other than that, our site had water and electric. we chose a site located right along the river which was fantastic. we were, however, next to the garbage and recycling station which was a tad unpleasant. Luckily it didn't smell but we did have all the other campers coming over every now and then campers had to dump their trash which made for some noise. Honestly nothing worth getting annoyed over and I knew that my site was next to this when I booked it. But just letting you all know. The RV spots are pretty good size as well. Plenty of space to park a car in front of a 30-ft trailer FYI. * camp facilities - I think they had some communal games that might have been closed due to covid. but honestly most of your time will be spent at the river. The camp store is excellent they are open from 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. they have everything you forgot and some. Firewood, aluminum foil, s'mores, ice, etc - they even sell inner tubes and rafts. They also have an air filling station to fill up those inner tubes! (so convenient so you don't have to pass out trying to blow air in your boat). Also, this was a huge bonus but the bathrooms and showers were surprisingly clean. The maintenance staff seemed to do a good job of cleaning this at least once daily. The water faucets and soap dispensers are touchless which I thought was quite fancy for a campground. In addition to bathrooms they have extra porta potties so there are ample places to do your business. The showers take quarters I believe we didn't shower in these because we had one in our RV. They also seem to have a friendly agreement with the nearby campsite and if you get a chance walk through this site to their camp store because they have amazing soft serve ice cream for $3 (they accept credit card with a $10 minimum purchase) * staff - the perfect balance of there to help but not in your face. The lady was strict and did go over a number of rules, but at the same time I think they have a really good understanding that this is a family campground and you are there to have fun. Some campgrounds I have been to have staff that roam around and constantly bicker at campers micromanaging them with the rules. The staff did not do this here and I so appreciate that. all the campers seem to be generally respectful of quiet hours and minding their own business. And most people seem to wear masks due to covid which I appreciated. * nearby beaches - The office has a handy sheet of nearby beaches and recommended hikes. Pfeiffer Beach is the closest which is about 1.5 mi south from the campgrounds. $10 per car for day use. Cons * Driving in and out -- honestly this isn't really a con but more of an FYI. The driveway down to the campground is quite steep and it's one way. If you are trailering take it easy and use your trailer brake control in addition to your car brakes. Getting in wasn't so bad. Getting out - several trailers and RV scraped as they began to go up the hill. I don't think there's any way to avoid this but just want you to know. * contacting the office - it's difficult getting ahold of someone on the phone * Staff knowledge of nearby beaches/parks - The younger gentleman really didn't know much about nearby attractions/parks/beaches * wifi - it is not great at all. The Wi-Fi router seems to reset often and goes out frequently. And even when connected the internet speed is similar to AOL 14.4k dial up speed. As you can see I rated this place five stars. While I listed some cons above I do not think any of them take away from the fact that this is a fantastic campground and that we had a wonderful time. read more

I absolutely love this place. We are new visitors, and they were extremely flexible when we had issues due to life chaos. Pam was extremely accommodating and helpful, even remembered our doggies names and had treats for them. I would go back in a heartbeat. First off, I have to say it's a beautiful area of Big Sur so you can't go wrong. Camping areas are available although Pfeiffer Big Sur campground is a wonderful choice too. Cabins are available as well and we were in #5 which had a table area and two large (Queen) sized beds. A coffee maker and/or a mini fridge would have been a pleasant addition. Clean restrooms and shower were an easy hike up a hill but would be difficult for those in a wheelchair, walker, etc. The cabin was adorable and had wonderful views. My main issue was with the Manager. When I called to make a reservation a year in advance, I assumed that there would be room for us to park our truck and 16 foot pop up trailer that we'd be towing. When the Manager called me back in December to collect our deposit, I clarified that we'd need a bit of space for the trailer. That was when we were told that there was no extra room for it. I was told to call around to other places. I did so and no one had extra space for it. This dramatically changed our camping plans. We had to tent camp instead of trailer camp which ended up fine but it was a huge inconvenience. When we arrived, we realized that there was plenty of room and it wouldn't have been an issue. The other problem that we had was with the phone system--when we called on several occasions, no one would pick up and only after a few days would someone call us back. Overall, we had a good time and it's a lovely place but the Manager really needs to work on customer service skills. read more
