Site 29! Had a great stay here. Stayed April 7th and 8th. First day and night were clear and we were able to see so many stars at night. As far as the campsite it self, i was a little scared that it would be too sloped, but it wasnt bad at all. We used a tent and set it up on the left side and kept the table/bench in the middle. We still had awesome views of the water. Everything was so green it looked like it was a filtered photograph. You could see the vault bathroom from our site but we couldn't smell it. The smell was very prominent though around the area where the host was staying. Bring a bucket, diapers (to soak up the pee), and thick plastic bags if you dont want to use their vault bathrooms. We didnt encounter any raccoons personally, but did see their prints all over our cooler (locked) and table in the mornings. We saw a groundhog and it spent an hour digging up a hole. Firewood was $15 a bundle. we have verizon for our cell service and had no signal at all. It actually went out about 20 miles before arriving to the campground. We were able to use the satellite option on our phones to send out a couple of text messages. Wish we lived closer cause the drive from Orange County was long. Enjoy the photos read more

Kirk Creek Campground offers one of the most breathtaking coastal views you'll find anywhere in California. Waking up right on the cliffs above the ocean is incredible and truly makes the trip worth it. There's no cell service, though newer iPhones with satellite messaging can still send and receive texts if needed. Just be prepared: the campground is very rustic. There's no water, no power, and only basic latrines. At $45 per night, it feels a bit steep considering the lack of amenities, but that's the Recreation.gov rate- and the scenery does soften the sting. If you're driving in, know that Nacimiento-Fergusson Road is not recommended for large vehicles, trailers, or anything that struggles with braking downhill. For larger rigs, Highway 1 is definitely the safer and better option. The surrounding area is amazing, with tons of hikes, beaches, and spots to explore. You can even find local jade along the beaches and in riverbeds, which is a fun bonus. The campground hosts are enthusiastic, friendly, and genuinely helpful- one of the highlights of staying here. The only major downside is the raccoon situation. They go absolutely wild at night- climbing on tables, chairs, coolers, even cars and trailers. They will try to open anything they can, so make sure everything is secured or locked up. It would be great to see the park system address this, because they're definitely a persistent (and bold) nuisance. Overall, Kirk Creek is stunning, quiet, and unforgettable- as long as you're ready for a rustic experience and some energetic nighttime visitors. read more

Kirk Creek is undeniably beautiful. The views are incredible, and you can walk to tons of great trails and beaches. But be prepared, it's extremely primitive and remote. There's no water, no electricity, no cell signal for at least 20 miles, and only latrines, so you need to pack in everything and if you forget anything or don't pack enough, good luck because the closest convenience store is 15 mins South on the 1 with price gouging that truly profits from supply and demand. No where to go North on the 1 as the highway has still not been rebuilt after the last landslide. For $45 a night, the value feels uneven. Some sites with full ocean views are absolutely "premium," but the inner sites are much smaller with limited views and really shouldn't cost the same. And honestly, any site downwind of the latrine should be discounted, the smell is brutal. Prior reviews about the host are no longer true, the newest hosts in Nov '25 are nothing but accommodating, knowledgeable, and social. They are happy to give great recs and sell firewood on site. read more

You are literally sleeping and camping right next to the ocean! Stayed here 3 nights and fell asleep to the ocean waves! Just wow! A few heads up- no water, no showers, no sinks. Pack everything in, and stop leaving trash out! Also no bear lockers- this place is filled with savage raccoons that are everywhere and they will break into your stuff if it is not locked away in the car! Absolutely breathtaking views here. One of the most amazing campgrounds in California. It's difficult to get reservations, but absolutely worth trying to get them. And worthy of repeat visits. The campground is open year round. There's no running water, but the outhouses don't smell. There's firewood for sale here. Site 31 is also home to some raccoons, so be wary of your food, there are no food storage boxes here so make sure you put everything away into your car overnight. One was bold enough to even go into the hatchback and try to open the cooler! It wasn't scary, more entertaining than anything. There's a short trail in the campground as well. It's easy access to Sand Dollar Beach, Limekiln State Park, McWay Falls and Pfeiffer Beach (45 minute drive from Kirk Creek Campground). Makes for a nice weekend and a nice road trip in California up the coast. There can be road closures that prevent access to the more famous areas (like this time to McWay Falls and Pfeiffer Beach), so it's good to check before heading out to avoid disappointment. Anyways, an amazing campground, you won't regret it if you get a spot here. read more

I've been dreaming of camping at Kirk Creek for about 4 years now after stumbling across a YouTube video that highlighted the epic views and serene atmosphere. Fast forward to a couple of months ago, I got lucky and snagged site 22 due to a cancellation. It's the last spot along the bluff and, from what I could tell, the only site with some shade thanks to a lone tree. You get a fire pit, grassy area, and a bench--all with an incredible, uninterrupted view of the ocean. I was a bit concerned after reading some reviews about raccoons wreaking havoc at night, but I didn't experience any wildlife drama (thankfully). Coming from SoCal, it felt similar to beach camping, but with a more rugged, isolated vibe. While Kirk Creek is breathtaking, if I return to Big Sur, I'm doing river camping at Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park or Fernwood cause that never gets old. That said, if you can get a reservation at Kirk Creek, especially site 22, grab it! read more

I don't know how many times I have read about Kirk Creek being one of the best campgrounds in CA. I had been wanting to go for years (yes back when it was first come first serve). Luckily this year I scored a last minute cancellation and was able to stay over fourth of July weekend. I must say as campgrounds go I wasn't that impressed. We had a campsite on the cliff (site 11) however, there wasn't much of a view unless you walk to the street by the bathrooms. The site was completely surrounded by poison oak and there was a family of racoons that would jump on the hood of the car and use the windshield as a slide at night. Now that I would have loved to see, sadly, we only saw the footprints in the morning. The racoons were also pretty bold and wouldnt even wait until we went to bed before they came to introduce themselves as we sat by the fire pit at night. There is also no shade whatsoever, so bring an easy up. The weather was lovely and hot. The beach from the campground was pretty rocky and full of poison oak so we opted to drive up and down the coast to other beaches during the day. Overall, I think I had built this place up in my head based on all those campsite top lists so it was a bit of a let down. As always, had a really good time being out in nature. P.S if you take Ferguson Road over be sure to check your coolant, engine and brakes before. It is pretty narrow and windy over multiple mountains. read more

I just stayed here for 2 nights with wifey and our lil schnoodle. We got really lucky and scored one of their best spots at the last minute! You'd be hard pressed to name a better coastal camping experience on the West Coast. The key is preparing before your arrival as there's little to no grocery stores nearby. Theres a trail that takes you to the ocean, there's another trail a short distance from the campsite that overlooks the campsite and Highway 1. The scenery is breathtaking! Just be careful as there's a ton of Poison Oak everywhere! There's many cool things to see during the day. My favorites were driving to Salmon Creek Falls. Be careful as you hike for that perfect view, the rocks are wet and slippery. Close the campsite is Mill Creek. The beach there is lovely/ we didn't make it to the trail but maybe next time. The ocean is very loud here so bring your earplugs at night! Beware, this place does have raccoons that will walk up to your campsite while you're making s'mores so be warned not to leave out trash or food, they will snatch yo sheeit! They even creep near the tent at night, I think our schnoodle wanted to pounce and protect our campsite. The hosts were really kind and happy to give info for nearby spots to visit. This whole experience was very emotional for me with now 3 parts of Big Sur closed. The southern most closure is 2 miles from this campsite. With the constant landslides and freeways breaking I worry how much longer Mother Nature will allow us to see this part of the coast. Important- with all this tall wet grass in the area, there are ticks, so use caution for yourself and your dog, a big one was crawling on our tent but I flicked him into oblivion with ease. Lastly,know in advance that there's no running water, Bring your own in advance. Bring your wet wipes to avoid being stank AF. read more

It'll take a stroke of luck to get a site at this campground. You'll either have to plant yourself in front of the computer at 6:59am six months prior to your desired date while frantically pushing the *book now* button, or you'll time it just right and swoop on a cancellation. Either way, totally worth it! This campground is often listed as one of the top campgrounds in California. It doesn't get better in terms of location: situated on a bluff overlooking the Pacific Ocean. Million dollar views at $35 a night. Our site (21) had a fire pit, grill and lots of space! We shared with a few resident bunnies who weren't intimidated by us at all. One night, the two of us saw a shadow float down from a tree and immediately turned on our flashlights to investigate. It wan owl trying to catch a gopher! What an experience! No cell service. No water. Pit toilets only. All of that didn't dissuade me, and many others, evidently. Breathtaking views of the crashing Pacific Ocean waves and the sun setting down on an April Tuesday (4/23/19). There is no phone service here. Glory to all the gods in all religions. If you really have to have your WI-FI, the nice host on duty told us that the Lucia Lodge charges $3 for an hour. It's a short drive further north. Nature is your religion here at Kirk Creek Campground. The stars at night! Only downside is the noise from cars on Highway 1 on until about 10PM, but not many during my slumber spell. Three raccoons snuck up on my husband and me while we were finishing our bottle of wine and letting the campfire die. Scared the curse words right out of my mouth. For me, they're at a cross between "stealthy little creeps" and "cute lil' scavenger gangsters." They scattered as soon as we jumped up, and came back like 15 minutes later. They didn't find anything at our campground, but the next morning we saw pawprints on our upopened cooler. (It had only cream sodas in it. Lol.) I hope you get a site that is oceanside. (They are reservable online, but those go fast - not sure about the others.) That way you can walk along the paths to view whales passing by. Sites are fairly close to one another, but not too bad and there is quite a bit of shrubs between the sites along the cliff. Firewood is $12 (yikes) and starter is $5, CASH ONLY at the host's site. Primitive camping. Pit toilets. Dogs allowed. I'm a fan. read more

Great campground. Located right on the California coast, this campground is probably one of the prettiest in the state. Camping here means you are basically cut off from the rest of the world: no wifi, no cell signal, just you and the waves. Each campground has the basic amenities, fire pit, table, parking space but no running water in the normal non-trailer sites. Bathrooms were decently clean. It is quite cold here so bring a jacket. I did have an intense allergic reaction to some kind of plant or pollen in the air here that made us have to leave early so just be careful if you tend to get allergies and bring benadryl. read more

I was aiming for Julia Pfeiffer but the sun was setting on me so I stopped here on a Thursday night with no reservations. I was only staying for one night, so I was lucky to find a free site. I stayed in #30, which is closest to the highway (furthest from the beach) but has great views because of a slight elevation and you can still hear the sound of the waves in the distance. You are pretty close to your neighbors, but everyone was quiet and respectful. Many people had dogs on leashes and there were families with children. Every one was well behaved friendly. Sites are $35/night. I saw the camp hosts but didn't interact with them much. There are pit toilets with ample toilet paper (I was there on a Wednesday night, weekends might be different). Each site has a fire/BBQ pit, a picnic table, and space for one car. Since there were signs warning us about raccoons, I kept all of my food in my car. I took a walk towards the more secluded walk-in sites and all of those had lockable food containers, which is nice. I stayed in mid-March and loved all the white calalily's blooming within the campground. There is poison oak everywhere, but just be mindful of where you walk and wear long pants and tops. I saw MANY rabbits near my site, #30 borders lots of trees and shrubs for bunnies to hide in, but they didn't really bother me. It was a bit difficult for me to find a truly flat space for my tent in #30, but I did ok. I did the hike down to the rocky beach. The hike itself was lovely, you cross Kirk Creek on a small "footbridge," but the beach was just rocks that morning, so I didn't stay on the beach very long. It was nice to listen to the sound of the creek meeting the ocean, but it was difficult to spend much time there, balancing on the tips of rocks. When I visit again, I would explore the inland Kirk Creek trail that starts just across the hwy from the campground. In the end I am really glad that I didn't drive on to Julia Pfeiffer. When I drove past it on my way home, the park was closed! Apparently they had some severe storm damage this spring and are closed until further notice (3/19). read more

Nice camp ground, but you don't see the big trees that I hoped to see. Dry camping. A little run down. The road north was closed down in September 2024 three miles north of this camp ground. Didn't see or hear the raccoons that other reviews talk about. Also when we went the fog didn't burn off much. We may have had 1 or 2 hours of sunshine every day. By camp site 12 there is a trail down to the water that has been cleaned up and cleared. Easy to hike! read more

After getting back from Big Sur this past weekend, I couldn't stop raving to all my friends about the amazing views from our campground. Most of the sites were very visually secluded -- lots of bushes/plants between you and your neighbors, giving your party a very intimate space to camp. We picked site #32, and we had a great panoramic view of the ocean and much of the campground. I was concerned after reading reviews about the steepness of the ground onsite, but the ground was actually pretty flat. We were also right next to the restrooms, which was perfect (there were no odor problems either). There was zero cell service here, but it actually made a pleasant weekend to "disconnect to reconnect". It would probably have helped to do a little more research beforehand, but we asked Bob (the campsite host) and he had plenty of advice for where to go during the day. At night, the raccoons came... Don't leave your food without locking it up in your car! We left a bag of marshmallows on the picnic table, went to the fire for about 20 minutes, and came back to the table... Didn't even notice it was gone until we heard something rustling in the bushes. Frantically turned the flashlight on the bush and caught a raccoon on top of the marshmallow bag, looking at us haughtily with its beady little eyes! NOTE: Bring your own water!! They have NO water onsite. Overestimate to be on the safe side. RESERVATION TIP: Campsites fill up quick. Book your site 6 months in advance, and this means 6 months TO THE EXACT DAY. Set an alarm on your phone for 12am if you have to. Although the campsites are all pretty great, some of them are definitely better than the others. Scour the rest of these reviews, and look at the facility map on the recreation.gov website for what sites are good (hint: pick one close to the water!). NOTABLE NEARBY ATTRACTIONS: - Beach under campground: walk to the north side of the campground and there will be a sketchy trail going down to a secluded beach area. A great place to watch the sunset since it's so close to the campsite. Hike at your own risk! - Sand Dollar Beach (5mi south, 5-minute drive) - Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park (17mi north, 20-minute drive) - Limekiln (2mi north, 3-minute drive) - Pfeiffer Beach (30mi north, 45-minute drive) -- worth the drive!! I've already set a reminder in my calendar for the end of the year to remind me to book again for next summer. That's how great this campground is! read more

The views were unparalleled. The problem we had was the group of girls camping next to us. We were in a trailer and had just gone to bed around 10:00. Then the explosions started. Initially, we thought they were lighting fireworks. They were actually hitting our trailer! We flew out of trailer to their site where we found one girl asking us "not to yell at her because she was in a fragile state". She admitted that they left a huge box of whip-its too close to the campfire and now she had a box of explosives. We would have gone to the campsite host BUT we were told earlier that day they were "off duty" and to not go over to their trailer. Not only could our trailer and others' tents been set on fire, but they literally could have killed someone. The next morning we collected whip-it canisters all over our campsite and on top of our trailer. Was the site beautiful? Yes, but without someone enforcing campsite rules and safety, we won't be back. read more

This is one of the most beautiful campgrounds I have ever visited. The site is literally by the Highway 1 so if your tent is close enough you might hear cars run by. The views are unbeatable and the trail to the beach is one of the most beautiful experience I had in a while. Hosts are super nice and very helpful. Make sure you come prepared with water as there is none onsite, firewood's if you don't want to get them onsite (They cost $15) and remember that there is no internet there! Closest place where you get wifi is Lucie (About 4mi north) for $5. Other than that it's such an amazing experience to be here and there are also a lot of fun hikes around the Los Padres Forest. One of the BEST times we've had camping!! We will be back!!! This campsite has the views of the coast and gorgeous sunsets. Check-in was super easy, just drive around until you find your campsite # with your last name. We stayed at site #32. It sits up a little higher so you don't have too many campsites in your view. We walked around and scouted where we'd like to stay next time. #9 takes the cake, perfect views of the coast line, you're right by the hiking trail and right on the edge of the water. Parents! Be warned, this entire campsite is riddled with poison oak. Be very, very, careful. We took the hiking trail down and was incredibly disappointed, because we had read online that this campsite has the only private stretch of sandy beaches. All we found were rocks. The hiking trail is in major need of trimming back the ivy, plants and poison oak. Wear long sleeves and long pants. However, this didn't deter us, we'll be back for #9. They have wood for sale, just note if you're getting there late they close the gate for the wood at 6pm (per the sign). read more

Beautiful and central to a lot of fun activities! We took our 22' travel trailer, the drive On the 1 going North was brutal I suggest going the 101 up North further and driving south on the 1. Other than that this place was Amazing! Beautiful views from the camp site and a great short hike down to a rocky but nice beach. We also traveled North to Phifer Big Sur state park with Redwoods and then South to Salmon Creek which had really cool waterfalls and pools. The Camp hosts we met (Shelly and and Cory) were really nice and sociable with everyone. Our kids loved all the grassy areas to play on and we felt safe with them running around the grounds. .Everything was clean. We had a great time and will be back as soon as we can get another site. read more

Finally gave in & booked 18. Seems to depend on speed of internet & how close your computer is to their primary server. The rest room is clean, and always paper there. It even has light at night. There are trash cans. No bear box. just need to put your food inside your vehicle. It seems that no beas live nearby. Kirk Creek Campground surpassed every expectation that we had! My boyfriend and I came camping here for 3 nights over New Years and had an absolutely incredible and magical experience. Shooting stars and gorgeous sunsets, you really feel like you're escaping from city life when you come to Kirk Creek. The camp hosts were friendly and super helpful when it came to finding hikes throughout the area. We camped at Site 18, and had a terrific view of the ocean and mountains. This is a dirty campsite - you're literally camping in the dirt - so be prepared to get messy and have mud under your fingernails for the next week. I wished we had bought a water filtration system so that we could have used the fresh spring water that runs near the grounds. Keep in mind that this site does not have running water, and no flush toilets. Other than the smell, they were totally fine and neatly kept. It's also a great idea to screen shot maps of the distances between the campsite and hikes that you want to do since there is no cell phone service at all in this area. 10/10 I would instantly want to come back here with friends and camp. read more

AMAZING LOCATION. We booked week of (I think we got really lucky) and stayed at site 22, at the end of the lot, with ocean views. The spot is shaded with direct views of the ocean. Flexible with # of people and cars, responsive to emails to help us with planning. Somewhat expensive (it's Big Sur - what do you expect). And firewood costs $15 for a small bundle.... But the campsite is clean. Dog friendly! The hosts are friendly. Bathrooms available, clean. There are raccoons all over the campsite. We didn't see any but we did see claw marks on my car door handle the next morning. I'd take raccoons over bears though! A little south of "Big Sur" but overall great location. Don't skip over the short walk to the beach between sites 9 and 11 and if you have time definitely cross the street to hike Vicente flat trail (you can hike as far as you want, the views just get better and better). Pro Tip: If you don't want to pay for extra cars or want to get there before check-in and hike, you can park on the street directly across from the campsite. read more

This site would get 5 stars for on exception. Start with the good. Many sites are near the cliff with amazing ocean views. Bring binoculars, you can see killer wales jumping and shooting water through their blowhole even without binoculars. I was there late August and although many sites were reserved people didn't show up. There is a rule that allows you to show up at one of these sites but you have to leave if whoever reserved it shows. I'd say that if you find an empty spot after dark it's unlikely the person who paid will show. Camp host didn't even ask for my ID when I pulled up but showed it anyway so I wouldn't be bothered. I was at site number 21. Ground was uncharacteristicly hard, I think a large fire was recently lit. I'd suggest bringing an air mattress or additional cushions for a better sleep. My site had a grill and fire pit. There was a path to the "beach" but really it was a bunch of boulders along the shore. I was expecting a sandy beach to lay on so this was disappointing. However along this path there was a great small waterfall which was ideal for bathing. No showers but the outhouses were clean and didn't smell. Ragged Point is not far plus another campground north so if you want a real bathroom or shower you might be able to head there about 20 mins away. But Kirk Creek is all about location location location. Now the bad, the raccoons are a problem here and should be mitigated. Make sure all your trash is in the trash can and your table is clean before dark. Droves of raccoons come out at dark. I had a bag of garbage they immediately went for. Scared them off but they kept coming. Family across the path had a raccoon in their car. When it gets dark probably best to stay in your tent or camper. I was able to scare them away, they didn't attack me or my tent. Campgrounds 10 and 11 are probably the most scenic and I think with less raccoons. Lots of friendlier wildlife: the squirrels will eat from your hand and the rabbits are super cool. I will definitely be back but they need to get some of the raccoons out of there, it would be nice not to have to hide as soon as it gets dark. UPDATE: A tick gave me Lyme Disease at this campground. Honestly it was amazing!!! Camp host was the best her name Is DARA!!! Super nice and attentive !! Always asking if we were okay and if we needed anything !! Love her! Very understanding finds the best to make us feel comfortable! Totally recommend especially if you want an amazing view to the ocean and camp sites are clean! No trash.. she's always walking around to make sure everything is clean and very chatty ! Can't get enough of how nice and best host ever!! This campground was amazing, I went June 10th for one night and it was my first time camping solo. I read a lot of reviews, honestly the no running water wasn't an issue for me, it's camping! The bathrooms were pretty clean and there wasn't an awful smell like some reviews said. The host is new and it was her 3rd day there and she was amazing, super sweet and social and just very helpful. I was able to secure a first come first served campground (2B) and it was absolutely perfect. I got there by 11 am and there were plenty of hikers sites and 2 first come first served. I almost even scored site 8 but a guy beat me to it. It was quiet and nice and people in general were super friendly. The views were breathtaking and the temperature was perfect, hot during the day and it cooled at night. The breeze slows down for sunset which by the way is one of the most amazing sunsets I've ever seen. There is really not a bad site on that campground but the best views are obviously the closest to the water. Lots of poison oak but if you're careful you will be ok, I was able to manage . The hike to the beach is short and beautiful once you get down there. There quite a few hikes to do in that area. Sand Dollar Beach is super close and it's a beautiful beach where you can lay out in the sun and surf. Make sure your tank is at least half full when you get there, there is only one convenient store and a tiny gas station where gas was $7 a gallon. The site was $35 a night and the hiker sites are $5 per person and if there are hiker sites available you can pull over, drop off your stuff and go and park on the street. I personally loved it and will definitely will be visiting that campground at least once a month. read more
