Bad vibes in a totally cool place. Not all change is good. The Big Sur River Inn has lost something, or more importantly, something has been chased off the property. Since I first started going there in 1972 it has been an oasis of cool, a shrine too chilling out with friends, family and new friends made on the lawn and sitting in the river. THAT is still there, but it won't be for long unless something is done.
I have dealt with security people from Khartoum, Sudan to Kalamazoo and they are, for the most part, cognizant of their surroundings, the businesses or government they are working for and their interactions with the public are appropriate and cordial. However, you can always tell the bad ones, the want to be detective, policeman, FBI agent or CIA covert operative. You know the guy or gal. The ones that wear combat gear in the mall, the ones that wear the jungle vest filled with detective gadget crap in the restaurant or bar and the ones who walk around the pool in a sport coat frowning at every customer in order to impress them with a perceived self importance. Please don't misunderstand, I have a great deal of respect for people in the security industry and I understand rules and the reality that rules are meant to be applied equally to all. However, it is the application and and the direction of peoples attention to those rules that differentiates a professional from a hack and an understanding of the environment and situational awareness on the part of the security entity that will, in the final analysis, determine the outcome of any interaction with the public.
I was not an active participant in the interaction on the lawn of the River Inn but was a very close witness to it. A young man walked out of his room at the Inn with a beer in his hand. Obviously he had started drinking it in his room but when his group arrived he walked out to join them. At about the same time I noticed a person standing on the path above the river. I noticed him because he was very much out of place both in his attire and his attitude . He was already in an aggressive and disturbed state. As the young man sat down the person standing on the path began the typical "glare down" of aggression. You know the one, the "I dislike you for no particular reason" stare of, well, hate. As the man moved toward the group he made no attempt to identify himself nor did he greet the group as welcome and, at this point in the Inns history, needed guests. He launched a rude, aggressive and somewhat abusive verbal attack on the young man for bringing an outside beverage onto the property. Even though the beverage had emerged from one of the Inns rooms. The young man responded almost gently admitting his error and promising not to do it again. The aggressor did not release at this point but continued to harangue and harass the young man and when others attempted to deescalate the situation the mans anger increased to a level that even my gentle dog Hazel moved on to my lap to avoid what was escalating, on the part of what was now obviously an employee of the Inn, to a violent level. The young man then quietly offered up his virtually empty bottle to the Inn employee and the man violently snatched it out of his hand and walked away.
Now, before I stop beating this obviously dead horse, I want to say how great the rest of the staff at the Inn were. Our waitress, the bar staff, the hostess all knew of the incident and did their best to ameliorate the situation and were wonderful and the band was it's usual cool self. This one individual could not ruin a great mothers day but it did take a little of the shine off of it. What this individual did do was destroy a 40 year relationship with me as a customer, my families devotion to holding events there at any future date and destroyed a perception of any good vibes that people have held of the Inn for many years to come. This person had numerous opportunities to change the outcome of this exchange however, he chose to do otherwise. I may go back from time to time to check out the vibe and see if this guy is still employed, but with no serious intent to give them my business until this kind of thing is fixed. Hmmm, after complaints were filed, it turns out this guy is, hopefully was the GM. read more
