See the pic of me sitting on the edge of the all memory foam bed, with no supported siding/edges, and NO SUPPORT at all unless you are light as a feather or young. If you have back or hip issues, neck issues, or sleep with two people who literally don't want to roll into each other in the middle of the bed...these beds are torture. I had to gather blankets from the car, extra towels from the bathroom, sheets & blankets from hallway linen closets to make a pile on the floor that was better to sleep on than the bed. I toss & turn at night and get up to go to the bathroom a few times, I couldn't even get to sleep due to the slope issues. Trying to turn over the mattress would bounce up to meet my body, making turning over a huge chore. While the floor was obviously too firm, it wax far better than the bed. When we told the owner, she literally didn't bat an eye and quickly recited how everyone loves the beds & they have a list of guests to send the bed info to...it was so quick a response, with NO "I'm so sorry you had to do that" that it felt like she has heard this before and this is her pat answer. For people in the hospitality business for years, this was not an adequate response. So many of my friends said how they could've sleep in a soft bed - - so, this review is for those of you who need a SUPPORTIVE or firm bed, you will need to go elsewhere as all the rooms have the same mattresses. If I had seen a review like mine, I would have chosen to stay elsewhere - even though the themed layout was right up my alley. Between my husband being a bigger guy and us in our 60s/70s with various normal aches & pains, this mattress was a huge detriment and you just need to take it into consideration before you book. We are retired and travel 4-5 months a year around the world and I have NEVER encountered a bed like this (and they are new!!). Just feedback about the bed as the Inn is pretty and breakfast good. Was just disappointed telling them about sleeping on the floor was taken so nonchalantly.

I was also able to check in a little earlier. Breakfast was at 8am the next day and when I went at around 8:55-9am the breakfast still wasn't ready. There were a few families waiting around for it as well. A pleasant stay, wouldn't recommend if you have serious seasonal, environmental or dust mite allergies.

And the decor of the room, Inn and lovely garden, service and daily breakfasts were all amazing. And speaking of the breakfasts, they were plentiful and absolutely delicious. We had a wonderful omelette one morning, stuffed with fresh ingredients and a side of asparagus and fruite, delicious French Toast another and a stuffed crepe the other. (The other morning we headed to our absolute favorite place on the planet for an early lunch....feel free to reach out to find out where!) I also had a fantastic 4 mile run from the Inn as it is so close to the water and they have a wonderful walking/running trail right there. It features a grand entry way framed with ivy and beautiful English gardens. I could not get over how lovely the lobby and lounge were. The staff were extremely accommodating and friendly. Off the lobby there is a communal fridge available for use (the rooms don't have their own). It is stocked with some sodas, which was a nice option to have. Our room was small but comfortable. I adore the doors in the room- the main door features a bright stained glass window and the bathroom door is a solid and beautiful piece of wood. There were plenty of pillows and blankets provided, as well as a nice fireplace. Everything was very clean- especially in the bathroom where our 2-person jetted tub was. They provide robes to lounge in which is a nice touch. In the evening they had a wine and snack hour in the lounge. That made for a pleasant start to our evening as we enjoyed the outdoor fountain humming alongside the classical music they were playing. Breakfast the next morning was tasty and featured an array of fresh berries and fruit. The waffle was fluffy and served with syrup. We chose to eat in the communal dining room and enjoyed a good chat with another couple staying there. The inn is located pretty much in the middle of Monterey- it is walking distance to restaurants but be aware that there are hills in that area. If you choose to stay here (and you should!) dont forego a little snooping in cupboards! We found a few diary books dating back to 1997, and had a blast reading about everyone's adventures in Monterey from so many years ago.

I called Lamp Lighter and they were so accommodating, and got me into a room on the property within the hour. The only reason I am docking a star is because 1) the rooms can get a bit stuffy during the day, especially if you're in a room like mine that gets direct sunlight almost all day and 2) the breakfast is limited (toasts, cereals & yogurts). The windows in our room had no screens on them and you could barely open the windows enough to get fresh air. They only have parking for 9 cars under the old wooden trellises, right on Ocean Blvd. The Inn is up the hill. You take a few flights up the stairs from the parking lot to get there. We had to park on the street because the lot was mostly full except for an area where the wood was rotten and ready to fall. We didn't want to risk that falling on our car. You have to take a few flights stairs to get to the front door of the Inn. It took awhile to get our luggage and other items up there. We checked in with Pearl, the Inn Keeper, and she gave us a tour of the property and showed us to our room. After that we never saw her again. They offered a full service breakfast with a set menu with several options to pick from. Breakfast is offered 8:00am to 10:00am. The breakfast room was very nice and the food was good. They have a set menu with a variety of options. You make your selection and they serve you. All the Inn staff were very friendly, hard working and accommodating. We were so grateful for their kindness. If you needed anything they will help you. The Inn is located very close to the Monterey Bay Aquarium and the wharf, which was convenient. The property is definitely old and is in dire need of repairs and upgrades. The bed in our room was awful. So uncomfortable that it made our backs hurt. The bed squeaked with every move you made. You can tell that it was very old. The bathroom was also in need of renovation. It looked dirty on the bottom of the shower probably because of wear and tear and age. When it was time to check out, at 11:00am, there was no Inn keeper to be found. We asked an employee who was painting the front game room what we should do. He said that the Inn keeper was not there and that we can leave our key on the counter and leave. I thought that was strange, but we did what he said. Also, a week before our check in, I called nearly every day to ask if we can have a feather free room, because of an allergy I have. But nobody ever answered the phone. They had a voicemail but it was so generic and just said " leave a message". I thought I was dialing the wrong number. And I couldn't leave a message because the mail box was full. If you are in the hospitality business you should probably have a more professional message for your voicemail identifying your business, and maybe have someone actually answer the phone. I thought that was very unprofessional. I think this is a one and done stay for us. I'm glad we got to experience it once. A shout out to the staff who work tirelessly to keep that place running. It's a shame the new owners are not investing in repairs and upgrades to their property.

Pros: Spectacular historical property, perfect oceanfront location, the sound of the ocean from your bedroom window, a beautiful courtyard, incredible antiques in every room, pretty wallpaper, good breakfast served in a wonderful room with panoramic ocean view. I also really liked Yuri and Casey. They were both lovely and friendly. Cons: The lobby is odd, dark and uninviting. There should be a check in desk and it should be welcoming. There could be a luxury candle burning to make it smell nice. The piano room is strange too. There should be a small bar and lively music or classical music. The sofas should be useable. It should be a place for socializing. The wood burning fireplaces are outdated and should be gas with a switch. My room was nice but smokey because of the fireplace, which I didn't use. Fresh baked cookies in the evening would be nice. Whatever their plans are, I hope the owners make improvements but don't over-modernize.
