Those bbq beans are T.D.F. - you can tell they are homemade. The hotdog itself was ice cold, but I had ordered it with slaw (which was also very good, but those BEANS, y'all...seriously!). They did put a lot of slaw on the dog, but the dog was so cold I had to wonder if it ever got cooked or heated at all. Next time I'll get the slaw on the side, and see if any improvement. The (beef?) dog had a very fine texture and loads of flavor, even cold...but it would be T.D.F. if they could grill them. We'll be back for sure, though. read more

After more than two decades on the First Coast we finally tried Lubi's, which is one of the most beloved local sandwich shops in Jacksonville. I had the Lubi's classic sub "all the way" except for mayonnaise, which is a steamed sub on a long hot dog-like bun with ground sirloin, onions, mustard, Kraft American cheese and hot jalapeño peppers so spicy my companion tried one bite and had fight-or-flight response. A sign advises you have to eat the steamed subs with a knife and fork and that was accurate. The bun is woefully unequipped to carry this glorious slop of steak, peppers and cheese. Breakfast was available at 11 a.m. so my companion got eggs, cheese and bacon in a pita and called it the best breakfast sandwich in town. However, on that Saturday, I decided to finally give this place a shot. Going in, the restaurant was quiet, but clean and had those classic fast casual food vibes! I ordered the famous Lubi with everything on it: meat, American cheese, mayo mustard, hot, and sweet peppers with a side of macaroni! Moving on with my review, the sandwhich overall was very tasty! For starters, meat tasted very fresh, and condiments plus sauces contrasted really well! My only critique was that this sandwhich is pretty soggy given its steamed, and would be perfect if the bread had more weight. Also, macaroni was just mayo and noodles, but wasn't good nor bad. Despite these things, the meal was a real value for your buck! And overall, I'd be down to try the other sandwiches as they looked really good! The shop itself needs some TLC. It's old, uninviting and not very clean. No staff were wearing masks or gloves while preparing food. I could go on with more but I'll stop there. The sandwich I got was ok. Ordered the camel rider and although it had a decent flavor it was extremely wet and soggy. Lubi's is an institution that's often overlooked. @danamorse reintroduced me to these delicious rolls of sloppy goodness when we were first dating. This location on Beach Blvd is the last holdout and walking in, is like stepping into a time capsule. The wood paneling brings you back to grandma's dining room and the flavor from that first bite solidifies that nostalgic bliss for many of us that grew up in JAX. The building is easily missed tucked between a car wash and gas station; just down Beach Blvd from the iconic Orange Dinosaur. Haven't been to Lubi's in several years and really wasn't sure what to expect, given some recent reviews. But I base my opinion on my opinion-and the facts! When we arrived yesterday on a sunny Saturday afternoon @ 2, the place appeared to be packed, according to the # of cars in the parking lot. So we opted for the drive thru. It was a fairly long wait (at least 15 min)-but this is not fast food, as their menu states! I thought the cost was a little on the high side ($8.99 for a Stroganoff sub). I also ordered a side of potato salad and a side of macaroni salad. $1.39 each. Again, a little much for the portion size. The potato salad did not taste homemade to me, but it did have some paprika sprinkled on top, which made it visually more appealing. I enjoyed the mac salad quite a bit. The pasta was firm, not mushy, and it had a creamy consistency. Both my sons and I decided on the Stroganoff Sub and we were not disappointed! I'm not a bread person or really even a sandwich person...but hey, this is Lubi-in a class all its own! The roll was soooooo soft and steamy. There was ground beef, topped with sour cream, onion, sweet & hot peppers, mushrooms, gravy, and cheese. My only complaint is there probably could've been more meat. The explosion of all these different tastes thrown together was wild, yet comforting, all at the same time! I ate half of my Lubi and saved the rest for later. It was every bit as good as a left over for dinner! The bread had soaked up some of all that yummy-ness and was to die for! If you've never been to Lubi's...it is like something out of the 1970's, so don't expect anything bright & shiny. It is like going back in time. Which I like. I cannot attest to the cleanliness of the interior since I didn't go inside this time. I will say when I was inside Lubi's maybe 4 years ago, it appeared to be very clean, but the perception might be otherwise just because the furnishings are not new. For a piece of unique Jacksonville cuisine, try a Lubi sub. But don't come here expecting a light meal. No, these crazy subs are so packed they give you a fork and knife to plow through it with. You can easily divide the sandwich and get two or three satisfying meals out of it, since its so packed with so much ground beef. My favorite is their mozzarella Lubi which I was once addicted to. I'd come here at least once a week. It's awesome. Ground beef and mozzarella with your choice of sour cream, onions, mustard, mayonnaise, and hot peppers. I usually get mine with just sour cream and mayo. New York is known for its cheesecake and pizza. Chicago is known for its hot dogs and pizza.
