My Hobie drive unit was having some issues. I dropped it off with Dallas on a Sunday and mid week I was told that my bearings were worn out. I trusted Brices diagnosis and parts were in stock. They installed a Mod 1 Goss outdoors kit. They repaired it and I never missed a day of fishing. I absolutely LOVE LowerGear!! We were backpacking in Havasupai Falls and got the 2 person backpacking package for a 7 day rental and it was everything we needed and the price was very reasonable! The backpacking package we got came with 2 backpacks, 2 sleeping bags, 2 sleeping pads, 2 water bladders, a water filter, stove, 2 pairs of hiking poles, 2 head lamps, and a pot and it was perfect. The only additional things we got separately were backpacking chairs and a pillow but you can get those from them as well. The staff were super nice and made this whole rental process super easy with picking up and dropping off. We were very pleased with our experience using LowerGear. We were staying in Scottsdale and wanted a baby carrier pack to do a few local hikes in the area with our 20mon old. We rented an Osprey Poco w. sun shade for 3 days during our trip. Both pick up and drop off were super quick and efficient. I was planning to hike mount Whitney. There were a bunch of items which were required for hiking and the overnight camping. I didn't want to invest $4000+ in hiking and camping gears that I would use not that often. Renting seemed to be a good option. I came to know about this store, from the several blogs I read on hiking Mount Whitney. It was a perfect one stop shop. My review is based on the online store experience. They have a vast selection of camping, backpacking and travel gear items for rent at an affordable price. The customer service is amazing. I had booked my rentals and later I realized that I needed to add few more items. I called them and they modified my order. As far as the shipping cost and returns are concerned. I would say, it is reasonable, and hassle free. LowerGear ships the items via FedEx. I'm embarrassed to say that while looking through my reviews I noticed I never reviewed LowerGear....this is far far far way overdue. For any and all of your outdoor need you need to go see Dallas at LowerGear. I first rented all my gear from Dallas when I was new into backpacking, I then bought used gear from Dallas shortly after... Well it was supposedly used gear but it was in brand spanking new condition. Dallas has great prices for rentals, purchasing new and used equipment... And I can't express how knowledgeable and awesome he is and his staff are .... Dallas, I told you I was back in Phoenix... You need to put your best sleeping bag, one person tent, mattress pad... and knows what else I can come up with aside for me because I will be in to get it very soon... This was the easiest kayak rental process I ever had to go through! As long as you have a trailer or truck that can hold a kayak then it's an easy rental. You can take their kayaks anywhere! Took a backpacking trip to Nepal to stop human trafficking. I'm not much of a camper, so renting made perfect sense. GREAT service. They answered (very politely) all my dumb questions. Ordered up a backpack, tent, sleeping back, air mattress, camp chair and backpack rain cover. Everything showed up right on time. Gear was in great shape. In Nepal we were camping on a mountain top and a corker of a storm blows in. 50 mph winds, hail and a frog drowner of a rainstorm arrives. My tent took it like a champ. Dry as a bone and no stakes came up. Just awesome. Two other guys with me had enough water in their tents to launch a boat. Very impressed with the balls of the gear LG rents out. Very friendly Dallas was more about giving me information rather than the sale. I felt very comfortable. I went back today and bought it. I live in Dallas and was traveling to Europe for vacation.. I needed a backpack but I didn't want to invest $300+ and buy a backpack that I'd only use once. That's when I came across LowerGear which turned out to be a great experience. The prices are extremely reasonable and the customer service is amazing. I booked to rent a backpack last minute and as soon as I booked I got a call to go over the details of what I needed it for to get the proper size and to make some modifications to ensure I got the backpack on time.. which I did! The backpack came in when I was promised and it was perfect for what I needed it for, it fit everything and was easy enough to carry! Just to show how great their customer service is, as I was traveling back home, my airline lost my luggage (my rented backpack) causing me to not make the deadline for returning my backpack on time. I talked with LowerGear about the luggage problem and they were extremely understanding and waived the late fee!! Horrible experience! I rented a 5 person tent and two sleeping pads for a 400 mile bike trip. I specified the day before for delivery and got it at 7pm that day. I was leaving early the next day so I didn't have time to setup the tent to check it. Well they shipped me a broken tent. In what way does repairing fiberglass poles with electrical tape constitute an acceptable fix? So on the trip , I had to rent a different tent and so doubled my cost. Lower gear never responded to my email nor to the note I included when I shipped it back. I am now disputing the cost with them as receiving a broken tent is not acceptable. read more

Awesome experience, would recommend LowerGear Outdoors to everyone! We began looking at kayaks at LowerGear Outdoors in May and were blown away by the high level of customer service and knowledge. Dallas took the time to find out exactly what we were using the kayaks for, made recommendations based on our needs and then went through all of the different features that could be beneficial to us. We needed to save up before we could make the purchase and there was absolutely no pressure from them. We went back in July with a few more questions and once again, Dallas was extremely helpful and made sure all of our questions were answered. We picked up our kayaks this past Thursday and Dallas went over every part of the kayaks with us to ensure we were educated before ever taking the kayaks out on the water. He made sure we understood how to use the pedal drives, gave us suggestions on what to do when we are coming to shore to ensure we do not damage the pedal drive, and really made us feel comfortable about switching back and forth from the pedal drive to paddling. It meant a lot to me that he took the time to go over everything on both kayaks to help ensure we have a great experience using and transporting the kayaks. We loved that we could get everything we needed in one place. We got a roof rack for the kayaks, paddles, life jackets, and a kayak stabilizer at the same time. They even helped us install the roof rack and load up the kayaks to ensure we knew exactly how to safely transport them. We took the kayaks out to Butcher Jones on Sunday and had a blast kayaking around Saguaro Lake. Everyone was commenting on the pedal drives and how easy it was to move around, I love that I can go backwards and forwards! I was in need of a cooler for my week long vacation traversing Arizona . Lower Gear came up on the google search. I was very pleased with picking it up . We rented camping equipment for a trip to New Mexico and Arizona. The good: They delivered the items requested to our hotel in a timely manner. All the equipment that we asked to have was there. It was really easy to ship everything back via UPS drop off. The bad: When we unpacked the tent we found that it was filthy and had several holes along the seams of the tent. What's worse is that they didn't provide enough stakes and several of the stakes in the bag were completely bent and useless. Luckily, it wasn't windy or rainy during our trip. We ordered two camping chairs. One of the chairs was fine, the other was dirty and the leg kept popping out of the bottom. The lantern we rented was a lot different than I expected. They should show pictures of the actual equipment they send. The headlamp didn't work as expected, either. Overall, we were disappointed. I called them right away about the condition of the tent. I played phone tag with them for several days and then finally talked to someone about getting a $50 refund (covered about 1/3 of the total cost of everything we rented). I love the idea of renting equipment, but they really do need to do a better job of making sure everything they send is in good condition first. read more

I rented a Spot GPS personal locator over the interwebs from LowerGear for a hiking trip to the Grand Canyon, Zion, Sedona, etc--- they shipped it to me where I was staying in Southern California and helped me do all of the online setup over the phone. When the trip was over, I put it back in the box and used the return label they provided to send it back. Then I got a thank you email saying they received it and that I could expect the charge to go through. Seamless! They were ultra helpful on the phone and even gave me advice on where to find some specialized items that they don't carry. I wish we had a LowerGear in California, I will definitely be calling them again if I need a GPS rental or can think of anything else they can help me with. I want to give them my business! I live within a dozen miles of Lower Gear and have been wanting to check them out for backpacking equipment. I would love to try before I buy, I suppose. The staff was very friendly, helpful and very knowledgable which was comforting. I only rented sleeping bags and pads, but looked a little at their several packs hanging on the wall. The equipment was clean and in good shape, and their warehouse seemed pretty well stocked to me. I have no issues with the place, and I'll give them another try on different things. They aren't in your face about sales, and I had to track someone down at some point to get some additional info. I think these guys are usually out and about, not really salesmen...which is just fine for my needs. read more

Very disappointed. Upon recommendation from someone else, I placed an order to rent a GPS for an international trip two weeks ahead of time. I received an email that the order was received and that I would get a tracking number as soon as it was shipped. Unfortunately, when they never happened I called. Had to leave a message but no one called back. I called again only to find out that they were out of the product but had never bothered to tell me. Had I known sooner, I could have gotten one from someone else. As it is, I'm basically out of luck. I was told to use my phone. Definitely not happy with this very poor service. read more

Great place to grab some lightweight gear when you don't want to drop the big $$. We had planned a trip to the bottom of the Grand Canyon and needed some lightweight gear. We walked in, chatted with the guy behind the counter and figured out what we needed. We had to make a few changes along the way (added some/removed some) and everything was taken of via email. The day before our trip we picked up all our gear, received some last minute tips and headed out. We rented the whole camping gear - Tent, Sleeping bags, Sleeping Pads, Single burner (for gas stove), Steel utensils, Camping lantern. We also got it shipped to a UPS Store on our way to camping. The whole process was super easy and perfect. As we were traveling from California and camping in Yellowstone, while visiting Glacier National Park first (not camping here), we were thoughtful about carrying our camping gear all the while. We didn't want to waste time in renting it in Salt Lake city, which would put a limit on renting and returning hours. So we thought to give LowerGear a try. We called Lower Gear and the guy answered all our doubts about shipping it to a UPS Store for us to pick it up on our day of camping and return it back after use. They shipped it well in advance and the UPS Store held it for about 5 days. The gears were all clean and neat (no tear or worn outs) even though they were used ones. The packaging was also apt. Overall the whole camping experience was a great one, especially it being in Yellowstone and am happy to say that LowerGear made the whole experience a lot easier. read more

I have all kinds of gear but its in Yosemite with my park ranger husband and I'm in Phoenix, so when I got the last minute call from some friends to do a rim to rim at the Grand Canyon, I panicked. But after calling everywhere in Flagstaff and Phoenix, LowerGear saved the day (maybe the guy that helped me is named Dallas, not sure), and tracked down the exact rental pack I wanted - same pack I have sitting in CA - and made sure it adjusted properly before I headed north for a fun weekend. Coming out of the canyon and driving back, took a little longer than expected and I was a bit late bringing the pack late, but I called them from the road and they were very accommodating (they might consider a night drop for returns since weekday hours are same as work hours but they're so accommodating maybe they don't need it). Love the Gregory Deva for my gear, and am completely sold on LowerGear Store for any rental or replacement needs - highly highly recommend for selection and customer service!!!! And I thought it was very reasonably priced for rental of some high quality gear. read more

I lost my tarp kit on a hike just a week before I was ready to leave on a 5-week PCT hike. I was very upset and worried about what to do. I found LowerGear online and called right away. BINGO. They had a Big Sky light-weight 1 person tent for rent that was reasonably priced and could be delivered to my home before I left. It arrived a day earlier than they told me it would. I had plenty of time to set it up and make sure everything was good- to- go. It performed beautifully on the whole trip and was high quality as well as very easy to set up everyday. It came to me clean and with two different sets of stakes so I could choose those most suitable for my needs. I am very grateful to Dallas for being responsive and efficient. I rented a tent and a sleeping bag from LowerGear one week before my camping trip to Florida. The guys were able to urgently ship the stuff, all in great shape, at such a short notice. They almost went out of the way to ship it before the last shipment went out that day. Everything was in great shape and the people were really helpful. The sheer ease of using this service makes it highly recommended. It is cheap, reliable and very satisfying. I placed an order with this company almost 2 months before a hiking trip and was sorely disappointed with the service/organization. Firstly, I never received an email confirmation after placing my order; I had to call them to convince myself that they had my order. To be safe, I had specified the gear to arrive 2 days before I needed it - just in case! Well, turns out my conservatism paid off. I called lowergear the day before the gear was to arrive to confirm that the shipment was on it's way, but the rep told me he had forgotten to ship my gear (oops!) and that the order was currently in his hands, unfulfilled! I told him to overnight the gear in order to make good on my order, but I was told that overnight shipping would cost them more than my order total, and therefore the best they could do was a two day ship (one day late). At that point I was pretty furious (their screw-up was not my problem!), but I was in a catch 22 because I needed the gear for my trip! So I accepted the delay and they took $10 off my order. The only reason I'm not giving them 1 star is because the gear was actually just fine, but beware of this company. If you order from them be prepared to do some babysitting during the process because they cannot be relied upon. read more

I was so disappointed in Lower Gear! Every time I spoke to them, they had a different story as to having/not having the equipment I wanted to rent. They don't even know what they have in their store!! I called to make sure they had the car top carrier that I needed before I went to pick it up, and I got 2 different stories as to not being sure if they had 2 to I THINK I HAVE THE ONE, LET me check.....I couldn't believe it. They ended up finding it in their warehouse. I picked up my Car Top Carrier that I thought I could use for the top of my car, not having a rack on top, to travel to California. I was assured that it would work by Dallas. First of all it was handed to me rolled up in a ball, obviously not cleaned or cared for the last time it was used. I took it home to try to attach to my car, and it didn't work. I took it back the next morning. I was told I would not get refunded for my 25.00 because they were going to have to clean it!
