This is one of the oldest fish houses in the county and a must visit for those traveling along the MN North Shore. They carry a huge selection of smoked fish, of which I chose 4 to sample. Compared to other fish houses in the region, the fish is more delicate, less dry and the seasoning is better balanced. We loved the lake trout and brown sugar salmon the best but the other two (whitefish and steelhead) were really good as well. In addition to smoked fish they carry a huge selection of cheese curds, including a mojito lime flavored one which was fantastic. They have spreads, jams, jellies, crackers AND ice cream--a one stop shop! There are even T-shirts in a rotation of colors with which to commemorate your trip! Service was fast and kind, and the overall shop is clean and well kept. We will definitely be back! read more

Stopped by on the way to Castle Danger after seeing a banner for Smoked Shrimp. Had to stop. Everything they were selling was ready to eat, no cooking required. So, it was a good snack to get. We got some smoked shrimp and the cajun salmon. They had other flavours for the fish too, like peppercorn, sugar, etc. The salmon was good, absolutely loooved the smoked shrimp! I came back shortly after to grab a blueberry cheesecake ice cream, and it did not disappoint. They also sell cheese and crackers if you wanted to get stuff for a fish/shrimp version charcuterie board. read more

Big surprises sometimes come in small packages. Met the 17 year old owner and her helper and they were super friendly. Generous samples of each fish to help you make an informed decision. Their smoked fish looked very appetizing, but we were on a road trip and asked to have our items vacuum-packed. They said they dod NOT have the capability. I'm sure they are a local favorite, but how much additional business could they do by offering this service? The cost of the equipment would be negligible, and the labor minimal. We stopped by this place on our from the North Shore. We had stopped by the Holiday gas station next door to get gas, but the sign of "World Famous Smoked Fish" caught our eye and we had to check it out. It's a small place, but looks very cozy and very Minnesotan inside. The person working the counter was very nice and manages to sell us ice cream even though we went into to buy the smoked fish! The ice cream is pretty solid which unique flavors like the Unicorn and Rich and famous. You can get a small cone with 2 generous scoops for $2.30. We got 1/2 of smoked peppercorn salmon for $15. They have other flavors like Cajun and brown sugar. They have also smoked/salted white fish and shrimp too! Definitely check this place out when you're in Two Harbors! read more

Love the sugar smoked steelhead. Smoky, lightly salty and then a soft sweet finish. Very nice. The whitefish is moist but a little too salty and could be smokier. I love smoked whitefish so I'm a little picky. Still quite good. Also bought some pickled herring. Very good. Unfortunately we really wanted to try their famous smoked shrimp but they were out. At the tail end of what was becoming a spendy vacation we opted for a cheap bread & cheese dinner and stopped into Lou's for the cheese portion (cheese curds, specifically. Their cheeses are shipped in by Eichten's, our favorite cheese place). Now, I've been to Lou's many times, but have never had the courage to try their smoked fish, but it sounded like a perfect addition to our meal, so we picked up $5 worth of the smoked Teriyaki. It was great! it had a slightly fishy smell, but a familiar teriyaki flavor and fabulous texture that was so good on the crusty bread we found. Kid approved, both the 4 and 2 year old gobbled their portion up and asked for more. We'll for sure be back to Lou's for more than just cheese, their maple smoked fish has won awards and I'd like to find out why. read more

Great smoked fish. I am always sure to pick up some smoked fish from here when I have some friends or family I wish to impress with my discerning taste in smoked fish. Their ice cream is also quite good. I sometimes like to treat myself to a scoop of the ice cream, but I would not recommend eating it at the same time as the smoked fish, as it is a sub-optimal pairing. We ordered the 12 pack of smoked shrimp and had them delivered. When we got them they were thawed and we didn't eat them. I called Lou's and they were more than gracious and said they would resend some more. When we received our package to our surprise, Lou's had added a package of Sharp White Cheddar Cheese and a additional package of shrimp, WOW!! We served them to our family and everyone loved them. You really can't go wrong going to any store on the North Shore that sells smoked fish. We go to Lou's because my wife's family has been going there for decades. We usually get their smoked herring because it isn't as greasy as the other types of fish. But that's not because of what Lou's does. It's just the nature of the species of fish. We'll pick up a herring, get some triscuits, some marble jack cheese, and find some rocks on Lake Superior to have a picnic. The seagulls will inevitably join the festivities, but that's part of the experience that is the North Shore. If you stop at Lou's, pick up some jerky, because that's also very tasty. read more

I go back and forth between Lou's and Smoky Kendall's for my smoked fish/jerky needs on the north shore. Kendall's offers great former roadhouse ambiance and a better selection of "extras" (sodas, cheeses, crackers, knickknacks). For those times when you're committed to the expressway to Two Harbors, or forgot to stop at Kendalls in Knife River, there's Lou's. Fortunately, the fish and jerky at Lou's are both top notch. As an added bonus, occasionally Lou's offers smoked shrimp and/or scallops, both of which are fantastic. Service ranges from friendly to grumpy, but selection is always top notch. read more

I've only stopped here twice, but twice I've got smoked fish and twice I've been super happy with the quality and taste of the fish. It's a cute little place with a hotel attached, in the cute little town of Two Harbors. They have Trout, Whitefish, and Bluefin Herring for the local fish (which is all I really like to get, yay local). They make jerky, fish spreads, and have hats! If you are ever going to Northern Minnesota, do drive along highway 61 and stop at this place. read more

Have to give the best beef jerky in MN five stars. I have gone up and down the north shore because I camp a lot in the BWCA and have family in Grand Marais. The only must stop going back to civilization is Lou's for a locally owned fish/meat market. The service is unbeatable and the smoked salmon and beef jerky is the best on the north shore! Some years ago, I had a friend of mine who was the studio teacher for a Hollywood movie that was being made in the area of Lou's Fish House, called "The Good Son" staring Macaulay Culkin, Elijah Wood, Wendy Crewson. The movie was just ok, but my friend was kind enough to mail order out to me this fantastic box of wonderful smoked beef jerky! Man was it good! As you can see by this posted date that I still think about it and ordering a box as I have done in the past. They do have a web page (see below) but only take order over the telephone, you are not able to order directly over the internet, but that's not a big deal to call and place an order. I see that the original family own store had been sold to the new owner in 2006, so I hope its the same quality, and if it is, man order anything on the mail ordre menu items and I bet they will taste fantastic! liked I remember them some time ago. Reading these other reviews I had the feeling that they're written by Lou's firends and family. The salmon was terrible, super oily and not deboned to pad the selling weight. The four dollar prawns were tough and rubbery. The turkey jerky was left with far too much moisture, and rendolent of fish. They use the same woods for everything, and given the taste, they don't have separate smokers for changing meats. I'd buy any prepackaged smoked salmon or jerky before suffering through this. read more
