If you have a passion for cheese, or if you are randomly in rural northern Wisconsin and looking for something to do, definitely check out this cheese shop. You may or may not see a sign for it on the highway, and you may wonder where you're headed turning down rural roads into farm territory, but when you make it there you'll be surrounded by all the cheese in its most glorious form and in its natural setting, (close to some cows). A wide variety of cheeses...I want to say too many...but there's no such thing as too many cheeses...but if there were... Lots of local goods of both the grocery and souvenir variety. Cheese samples. It was kismet. I was about an hour outside of Duluth/Superior when a commercial came on the radio for Benoit Cheese Haus and then there was a sign pointing the way. Well, now I have to stop. I ended up buying about $50 of Wisconsin cheddar and Wisconsin cheese curds (the Buffalo hot are HOT) and a block of balsamic bellavitano and a block of farmer cheese and even a couple of meat snack sticks. The cheese curds and the snack sticks made it a day or two. The cheese blocks made it home. I'm not sure what came over me. Thankfully, I managed to avoid the more expensive and exotic cheeses, but yes, they do have those if you're interested. I had to rearrange my fridge so it would stay fresh in there until I got home. Was visiting Duluth, Mn for a few days and wanted to pick up some Wisconsin cheese before I went home. It was an hour drive for me but well worth it! Small building but on the inside there are tons of cheese, meat or maple syrup to choose from. I was able to taste test most of the cheese, the staff was super friendly and gave me 1:1 assistant that is rarely seen these days. However, in our current state of affairs, I've decided that I can no longer give this business my money. They refuse to wear masks when dealing with customers and do not follow social distancing guidelines. There are plenty of other places around here to get cheese. You know what I love? Cheese. You know what I really love? Free cheese samples. At Benoit Cheese, I got both of those things I love. And for that, I am grateful. If you are in the Ashland area with a little time to kill (or a pressing need for cheese, which you should always have a need for cheese), take a little side trip out of town to Benoit to visit the Cheese Haus (what is the name of this place exactly? the signs on the way there say Cheese Haus...). The store is rather small, but they don't waste space with the walls lined with coolers full of various cheeses. Pretty much everything you'd expect to find from a Wisconsin cheese store are here. Your standard cheeses, your standard fancy cheeses (chocolate whatever, truffle cheese, flavored havarti and smoked things), and some tasty meat things like summer sausage. Everything you need for a meat and cheese platter. They also sell a number of premade cheese pizza things, it seemed. Would be handy for a party when in a pinch. The prices seemed good with some solid deals to be had as well. Perhaps the best thing about the store is that the woman working wants you to have some cheese. As I was perusing the coolers, I was brought a slice of an aged cheddar without asking or expecting it. And then a slice of another cheese... and another... It was no pressure, free cheese sample service and it was great! So if you want some cheese to try and buy, this is a great little shop that is worth going slightly out of the way for. If you go, I highly recommend the smoked rope cheese, it's delicious! It never fails I bought cheese today half as a gift and the rest for my consumption. I bought enough for a free chunk of cheese got that and a BOGO cheese . Problem is I got over charged again and it's not the first time. I didn't figure it out till I got home. I was charged for something I did not get . My fault partly. We were passing through on our way to Fargo, ND and got caught in the middle of a big rain storm. We stopped at the Welcome Center where a lady was passing out free samples of Benoit Cheese. We decided to go to the Cheese Shop which was about 1 mile off our route. The person who waited on me was very nice and let us sample cheeses. We wound up buying 4 different kinds. Horseradish Chive, aged Cheddar, Olive Cheddar and Buffalo Wing. Excellent!!!! I will order by mail from them. You will NOT be disappointed with this Company. The cheese selection and quality is quite good at Benoit Cheese, however the execution of this business leaves a lot to be desired. My partner and I were extremely disappointed with the entire service experience. The sample cheese wasn't labeled and had no toothpicks or anything to sample it with other than your hands which is not sanitary and we were not offered any samples. When we did try to order there was not a list of cheeses available. Why? Because there is ONE paper sheet that is "the list" and it was in use by another customer who was shopping for other items. It was expected that we should retrieve it. Not my job -- apparently not anyone's job. Once we were finally able to request cheeses another customer was allowed to cut in front of us literally while in mid-sentence requesting a sample. After waiting for that eight minute check out process we were given sliced cheese that we requested specifically as chunk (never corrected even though we mentioned it), then given the wrong cheese and once that was rectified and we were given the correct cheese and it was the wrong amount by 1/2 a pound. Also the woman never washed her hands or wore gloves to give us the one sample we managed to request. Terrible, awful, no good service. It would take a lot of something for us to ever return to this shop. It's Wisconsin -- there is literally cheese everywhere and competent people to serve it so go somewhere else. read more

What a hidden gem! Going up to Bayfield with Kayaks on roof, to tour the SeaCaves, We noticed a small sign off of Hwy 2, that stated "Benoit Cheese, 1 mile" I am so glad we took the small detour. The gal that worked there was just wonderful. She allowed us to sample, she was very knowledgeable and passionate about her job. Other locally crafted items were for sale.
