This winery presents a great opportunity to sample good old fashioned mead, that which sustained drinkers in medieval times. Nothing medieval about this winery, however as it delivers a whole range of choices along the flavor profile from light to complex and spicey. We make it a point to stop in every time we drive across country and buy a case of various favorites. Good cheese samplers, great mead flight, snack mixes, and conversation with the proprietor made this once again a highlight of our trip. These folks really know how to make mead! They have been in business since 1996, and it shows. We tasted 3 meads, 2 ciders, an ice cider and a liquor spirit. We especially liked the Northern Highlands Dry, the peach Kwench session mead, and the black mead. I really liked that they had session mead options, which had about half the alcohol. We enjoyed the lively garden and cute patio. Very glad we stopped, a meadery is such a treat. They must be doing something right, because the place was packed on a Thursday. We have tried so many other meads that were way too sweet and not even in the realm of White Winter. Definitely recommend! read more

It was so fun to find this on our way home from Ashland, Wi. It's such a treat to taste local products! Please visit this neat cozy place! I didn't get to snap much photos but they do have all kinds of Mead drinks & ciders. The couple John and Kim (Hamilton?) has been running and making these local drinks for the past 28 years! We support local and they deserve to be recognized more. They are lovely and kind people which makes it an impressive impression, surely! There are toys for kids to get busy with too! On a recent trip to the area, my mom was like "there's a winery here...let's check it out" and of course I was like "all righty, because I love wine". So it was a bit of a surprise to find out WWW is not really a winery - it's a meader-y. As in, they make mead. My previous experience with mead was not a good one - from what I recall, I drank about 50 syrupy sweet glasses of the stuff once at RenFair and then ate a giant burrito at Acapulco afterwards. That did NOT end well - so I was a little nervous heading in. You have a few options - try 3 small tastes for free or do a complete tasting & keep the glass for $5. They've got probably a dozen or so mead varieties, plus "mead coolers" (like wine coolers I guess) and one grape based variety. The person running the tasting was really helpful and explained that mead doesn't have to be sticky sweet and gross. The best tasting one, to me at least, was a strawberry mead. It wasn't sweet or heavy, it had a subtle fruit taste and it would probably be pretty tasty when drunk on a patio. If you like what you taste, bottles are about $13-15 each. Everything is made on site and they have a small gift shop with wine accessories like glasses, openers, etc. I'm not sure that I'm a "mead convert" but WWW is certainly turning out a quality product. read more

My friend and I were on a wine weekend and were at Seven Ponds winery in Bayfield and we were looking for another winery in the area. The staff mentioned White Winter Winery (which was out of our way, but we were open trying it). When we got there and did the tasting we were both very disappointed to find out that this was not a winery at all but was a meadery and distillery:(..false advertising in my book! read more

I wandered into White Winter Winery with few expectations, but I was more than pleasantly surprised! They're technically closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays in the off-season, but the door was open and Jon welcomed me inside to do a tasting. He turned me over to Kim, who was very friendly, patient, and knowledgable about the different meads I tasted. I was also pleasantly surprised about the quality of the meads and ended up buying four bottles! They're perfect gifts and I'm definitely holding back a bottle of their maple-based mead to enjoy myself. read more
