Louie's is a Marshall institution. I had a few slices of their chocolate cake several years ago at a birthday party and have only now been able to come here personally. (Sadly, they no longer make whole cakes for any occasion. ) BUT they do have little square cakes, which I made sure to get two of! The staff are extremely friendly and make you feel right at home. Both ladies in front greeted the regulars and out-of-towners like family. It is small, like most good bakeries are. But so much heart. I picked up donuts for the customer this morning from Louie's and they were a huge hit. Sadly, I couldn't eat any because I'm still enjoying my keto diet. But the office devoured them! If I was going to eat one, it would have been the custard filled but I did not. Chocolate, cinnamon roll, raspberry filled, plain, sugared, crullers and more. They smelled amazing. Quaint and cute bakery right downtown Marshall. They don't have a ton of options, but what they do have is amazing. We indulged on a variety of cookies and a huge brownie. A small but pretty town. We came quite late to this bakery. We came at 2pm when they would close around 3pm. Not have a lot left to choose from which was ok & totally understandable for us. We bought 4 donuts & some cinnamon swirl sandwich that only cost less than 8$. We were asking again to make sure as it seems not right. But it was right as the confirmation from the cashier. The donuts were delicious, even we ate 2 of them one day after. Heat up in microwave like 20s and the donut was perfect. Get there early for the best choices! This sweet little bakery has the best chocolate covered long Johns! All of their donuts and pastries are delicious. Very fresh and you will want them all. I saw yummy looking desserts and pies and cookies too but it did not try them. The staff is so friendly and helpful. Wow. This is one of the better donut places I've been to and I've been to many. The dough at this place actually had flavor and their donuts were fantastic. Came from Chicago to get my favorite of all time NUT ROLL You can not find these anywhere in the USA And now that I found out that they ship nationwide and my heart rate went through the roof!! I'm a senior advisor and I rate Louie's Bakery more than 5 stars. Prices did sky rocket and I believe that it's ok to raise prices but to this extreme wow! But it is what it is . My whole Gutierrez family is from here as well As me coming here very 6 months to spend time with my grandfather and grandmother Raymond and Mercedes since I was a child and then they would drive me back to Chicago to be back with my mom Julia. My mother passed away July 13, 2015 My mother always wanted the Nut rolls and got me hooked on them as well. RIP mom My grandfather use to have his Mexican restaurant here called Gutierrez Cafe and when I came here inuse to run to the back door here behind Louie's and Louie would be making his rolls and he use to give me some to take back to my grandparents and my grandparents would send me back to Louie with some beans and rice and some of my grandmothers flower tortillas. I'm really thinking of opening up my own Mexican/Irish restaurant with a mixture of both foods together and call my restaurant "Irish I was Mexican " And hand make my grandmothers flower tortillas with her recipe and home made NOT retried beans like I've heard this other so call Mexican place makes and fake box rice!! Wow I couldn't believe they do this !! And I know exactly why, because they figure that whites people don't know the difference! And you just don't do this to people. For nearly a decade, this was the best bakery ever. We drove there just to purchase their bread and baked goods which were extraordinarily good. Unfortunately, their young girls (this morning) were extremely rude about putting my donuts and rolls in a box. I even offered to pay for the box. They said that we were the "only rude customer they had today" and referred to us as "you people." One girl stated that she had worked there for the past seven months. It will be a while before I return. I really do not mind paying high prices when the items are as good as they are at Louie's, but I will not give my money to people who are as rude as they were this morning-----and all over not wanting to please the customer. This review should not be taken lightly, as I have taught PR and Communication Skills for nearly 40 years. I realize these girls are very young. I figured I would make my one hundredth review meaningful, so here goes. I grew up in Marshall as a child and have some of the fondest memories of summers spent eating ice cream by the downtown fountain, getting a whole dollar to spend at the one cent store, and watching the old car parade from the back of my grandpa's fixed up Ford. But hands down some of my absolute sweetest memories involve a Louie's Bakery nut roll or two. I've never had any other donut-y dessert quite like a Louie's nut roll, but I am SO glad that they ship nationwide now! I haven't had one since I was probably about 9 years old, but my 30th birthday is right around the corner and I think I'm going to gift myself with a whole dozen. I'm so happy that Louie's is still around and as much of an institution as it was when I was young. It's one of the places that makes Marshall great and I hope to bring my own daughter here some day. read more

The doughnuts are good. But this place isn't worth it. Went in and was told it was a 20$ minimum charge for card. 20$ lol. It's 2020. They should update there paying system. There is no reason in the world why I should have to pay 20+ dollars just to get a a doughnut. We stopped at Louis after a lunch at Win Schuyler's. The place was quite small but they still had quite a selection. I had the cream Horne which was filled with real pastry cream not that awful marshmallow stuff at most places....delicious!! We ordered several long Johns which were good but not my favorite. The coffee was good but a few tables were necessary to make it perfect. I know they are limited for space but tables in an extended location would really help. It was 1 pm and they had already sold out of their cinnamon nut rolls which I really wanted to try but we should have stopped before lunch. Really quite a treat! read more

I'm a tough critic when it comes to anything involving sweets. It's true. You may have read some of my reviews of bakeries/candy stores/ice cream parlors/sweet shops on here. I can be prett-tty brutal when I think a place that peddles sugar doesn't deliver. This is why I'd like to take the opportunity to give props to Louie's for having the best pies in the galaxy---if not the universe! I'll start with the lemon meringue pie. It's my all-time fav at Louie's--which is weird because I normally avoid lemon meringue at all costs anywhere else. I mean, c'mon. Think of the typical lemon meringue pie they serve at a Greek diner. It's a flavorless cardboard crust, some Jell-o instant lemon filling, and some soppy meringue that tastes lake pure egg whites. Then there's this gross, slimy perimeter of God-knows-what between the meringue and the custard that makes the meringue slide about like a roller skate on a sheet of ice. Disgusting. Then, there's Louie's lemon meringue. Oh Louie, how do you do it? Your filling is perfectly sweet-tart. I can see and taste the bits of lemon zest in your homemade curd, and your custard isn't dyed a disgusting sun-yellow but it remains a natural buttercream color. Delightful! Then there's your crust! And WHAT A CRUST! Is it shortbread? Is it phyllo dough? I can't tell, but whatever it is, it's sweet and it has flavor, almost cookie-like. And now we come to my favorite part. The meringue. To tell you the truth, Louie, I'm not even sure you can legally call this meringue. I think you're lying to all of us and you're really just making some homemade marshmallow fluff, piling 5 or 6-inches on top of the filling, and then lightly scorching it to a shiny, glistening brown. Is that what you're doing, Louie? Is it? Are you fooling all of us? Because that meringue sure doesn't taste anything like beaten egg whites. It's too sweet, too characteristically vanilla, too fluffly, too CREAMY. Louie's other cream and meringue pies follow the same equation. They're unbelievable unless you try them. Oh, and then there's this peanut danish that Louie makes that is apparently world-reknowned. It's an unrealistically tasty snack, but give me a slice of that meringue pie! read more

I tried to use my debit card and I couldn't use it because my total was 1.70 not 20 dollars which was their requirement. The worker said that I couldn't use it and that I could buy a 20 dollar gift card. Ma'am I could barely afford this cookie how the hell do you expect me to buy a gift card. We ate breakfast across the street at Kate's Diner (see my review on Kate's) and saw the bakery. Who can pass up a small town bakery!? Walked in to a small yet nicely arranged bakery. The staff was nice to answer questions about various pasteries. I ordered a cream filled, chocolate glazed long John to take with me. I ended up eating it later in the day and it was still delicious but it would have been better immediately after ordering it. There was ample filling which was a very nice surprise. Stopped in to purchase danish and was pleasantly surprised to find a wide assortment of products. This is not your everyday donut shop. Giving 2 stars because they have very poor management, when they screw up your order (My daughters 1st birthday cake) they offered nothing not even an apology, within 10 minutes of leaving they post the cake on Facebook for half price. Not a good way to treat a long time customer. read more
