Saw signs on the interstate advertising the donut capital of the word so of course we stopped! I think I was expecting a mega market or something, but this was still cool and delicious. The line was huge, but moved quickly. We made it there around 10:30 so they were already sold out of some donuts. My only complaint was since we got 5 donuts, they were stacked in a bag, so the icing had pretty much completely came off the one on the bottom. read more

Ain't no self respecting Angolanite (Angolander? Angoler?) who don't know about Tom's Donuts. Donuts is all they do and they do it well. They even set a Guinness world record in 2022 for selling the most donuts on a single day. Tons of varieties with lots of fun specialties, like their ginormous roll heaped with fresh cooked bacon (!) bits and drizzled with maple icing. It's like the staff are backstage just throwing donut magic around to create delectable oddities of donut wonder. Donuts are fresh and fast, staff are quick to tell you their faves, enter through the in door and exit through the out door. Love going here whenever we visit Lake James. Brings good memories of childhood ! Wow! Saw a billboard on the hwy while headed to Lansing. I love donuts so my husband made a detour. I knew it was going to be a good donut when I picked it up and could feel the pillowy goodness. I have been lucky enough to experience Tom's Donuts a couple times a year since childhood in the 70s. There is more to this place than nostalgia. My family has been getting these doughnuts every summer at the lake for as long as I can remember. They are seriously some the best doughnuts I have ever had. You can't go wrong. All flavors are melt in your mouth delicious. Not only are they delicious but the ambiance is super cute. It's just a little roadside building you walk up to and wait in line outside with the lake right behind you. Doesn't get any better than this for me. Not only do they have a very large selection for such a small place, they actually make really good donuts. We got a baker's dozen, and then a couple for $13.50, sweet! The young lady helping was quick and could explain all the flavors (which is super helpful). She even suggested a donut for my parent's dog who was with us (huge Newfie named Bear). So nice. I highly suggest the apple fritter, powdered blueberry, and the powdered chocolate cream. They really stuff their donuts chalk full of goodness. Who know old-fashion donuts made by hand still exist? After my family received really rude service at a nearby bistro on the waterfront that shall remain nameless we stopped at Tom's and I couldn't be happier that we did. Great donuts that are super cheap (8 donut and a dozen donut holes for $12) and everyone in our group that got ice cream said that was good too. Longtime and frequent Tom's customers and promoters - but disappointed they no longer carry bow tie donuts. This was always their signature item and the reason so many traveled to Toms. We'd heard rumors from others on our lake that the new owner raised prices and cut out bow ties, and we have sadly confirmed it to be true after our 4th visit to this location this summer. Raised prices are understandable and totally fine to us with COVID hardships, but cutting bow ties makes visits to this Tom's location a tradition ended for our lake crew :-( read more

Early morning boat rides are great, but even better when you are cruising to Tom's Donuts on Lake James. They even have a private dock for their "float-in" customers. I was there this morning and, thank goodness, there was the usual line. Waiting in line while strategizing your donut selection is part of the fun of Tom's. It is great to share this happy experience with others of the lake community. You might be in line with a CEO or a preschooler and everyone has the same wardrobe - ultra casual. Depending on the time of day, maybe even jammies. Everyone has the same status while in line at Tom's and everyone is in a good mood because they will soon have their favorite pastry and - Hello - they're at the lake! Once you arrive at the order window, if you can choose several items, alternately, from opposite ends of the display windows, then you have demonstrated that you are truly an accomplished donut selector. I love it when little kids are in line in front of me because they are more inclined to not know what they want and need to walk back and forth to inspect the selection. Watching their joy in choosing their own donut, well, it is priceless. Today I watched a barefoot three year old clutching his Tom's Donuts bag while he trotted back toward his parent's boat or cottage. He was beaming with pride with his treasure in hand. Sure, Tom's has other locations where you can score their wonderful fare but their stand on the channel between Lake James and Jimmerson Lake is a special place for precious memories to be made and relived.
