Best ice cream in Indiana! (Even though I've only had ice cream at a couple places in Indiana haha) As a kid, I would head to Pokagon State Park to camp every summer and Scoops was always a tradition for us! Their ice cream is so tasty and they have so many different options, including dairy free! The store has outside and inside seating, can get a bit cramped at times but it's absolutely worth the crowds they have at times! Lastly, the service here is incredibly nice, helpful and efficient. This was my first visit to Scoops. I usually like zesto but scoops is the hands down winner. This is a great ice cream shop that has both scoops of hard ice cream and frozen custard soft serve that they turn into a "blaster". A blaster is their name for a blizzard. The ice cream is excellent quality and has some unusual flavors. Fortunately they allow for sampling to assist in decision making. They also have vegan ice cream made with coconut milk. My triple chocolate peanut butter was filled to the max with peanut butter and mini sized "Reese's". The two scoops cost was $3.00. The scoops were huge. My husband and I made a little detour for ice cream while driving on the turnpike from Chicago to Boston. Anything is better than going to a rest area, but this place is so charming and welcoming. I Googled ice cream shops in the area and saw a listing for Scoops. As a pastry chef, I look for items out of the ordinary, and I don't like too much in my ice cream. While they had moose tracks and other flavors that get exciting and full of components, they also have some nice, simple flavors. They give samples, so I tried several. My decision was a small sundae which is 2 & 1/2 scoops. I was a little disappointed that they don't use real whip cream (it appeared to be Cool Whip or the like), but the lemon ice cream and orange pineapple ice cream were heavenly together! I skipped the topping because the ice cream was so good by itself. Anything more than the whipped topping, nuts, and cherry would have ruined it. My husband wasn't going to get anything. He said he was full from dinner. Whatever. Like that ever mattered before! He got the coconut almond fudge in a kiddy scoop and he really enjoyed it. Bookmarked this place on yelp a year ago when I was new to the area and had no idea it was so far from where I was living. Happened to drive by it on a road trip and it did not disappoint! We had the triple chocolate, sea salt caramel, super man and mint chocolate chip and they were all delicious! Only draw back was it was SO BUSY! Well, it is not homemade on the premises, but they do import Nafziger's ice cream from Ohio for their ice cream, and judging on the amount of people coming and going on a cold June night, their efforts are appreciated.. Prices are quite reasonable and they have a multitude of flavors in the typical run-of-the-mill cones or cups. Their lot is not paved, so don't drive your freshly washed car there. Came across this little place while driving around right outside of Angola over Labor Day Weekend (2010). Just moved to the state and new nothing about the area. When we saw how many cars were in their parking lot, we knew we'd have to stop. They do have generous portion sizes. My single scoop (Caramel Caribou or something like that) would have been a double anywhere else. I love their neat trick of hiding a marshmallow in the bottom of the cone, so that it doesn't leak. They also sold us a banana at a very reasonable price, so our 22 month old daugther could have a healthy snack. Can't vouch for the shakes, personally, but they are the reason for the 4 stars (versus 5). Who uses vanilla ice cream to make a chocolate shake? My husband said it was okay. (They do add the cherry and whip cream on top). Would absolutely go back and would definitely recommend it. Also, their prices are very affordable even in a bad economy! (Would give it 4.5 stars if Yelp let me). Bottom line my ice cream cone with all of it's caramel goodness was nothing short of YUMmy! read more
