Stopped by last night at 9:24 PM after a long, cold day in the area. The restaurant advertises that it's open until 11 PM (as listed on Yelp), so my group of four thought it would be the perfect spot for a late dinner. However, upon walking in, the server informed us they wouldn't seat us because they were "closing early for cleaning." Honestly, the place looks dead and I feel like they just want to close up shop. There was no signage at the door indicating an early closure, which was incredibly frustrating and unprofessional. We were left scrambling for another option after counting on their posted hours. Fortunately, we ended up at a nearby Thai restaurant where the food and service were excellent--10/10. Needless to say, we won't be coming back here (unless a friend really wants to). read more

For five years now I've lived across the street from Lotus & Light and have only eaten there a few times. It was OK, but it never held a candle to more authentic Vietnamese restaurants...the ones in run down strip malls found in other parts of the valley. No, Lotus & Light was bright and trendy. It was very clean...maybe too clean and so was the food. You could taste the quality of the meats and veggies that went along with the IKEA like design, but it lacked the soul that the cheaper, run down places had. Years later, on a cold spring night, my girlfriend wanted pho. Not wanting to pay the service fees on delivery anymore, we decided to go across the street and give them another try and this time, soul was on the menu. It's still the same restaurant after all these years even though there was a management change not that long ago. Wood tables...white chairs...the same fake succulents and vines hanging from the walls. Walking in years before, the air felt clean...you didn't know you were walking into a Vietnamese restaurant. This time, there was a funk in the air...that wonderful combination of fish sauce and various broths stewing away. The menu looks pretty much the same...pho...bun...spring rolls...teas. I got the steak pho and my girlfriend got the chicken pho. Even though the place was packed that night, an hour before closing on a Wednesday nonetheless, our bowls of steamy goodness were brought out to us fairly quickly. When the bowl of pho was placed in front of me, you immediately got a waft of that carefully simmered and well seasoned broth. I remember having to add so much flavor to their broth before...hoisin, fish sauce, salt, basil...this time the broth was almost perfect. It just needed that squeeze of lime to brighten it up and enough jalapeños and sriracha to turn up the heat, something I'd do with even the most flavorful and best phos in town. If I had one complaint, the steak wasn't sliced thin enough and there wasn't enough. My girlfriend on the other hand basically got an entire chicken breast in her bowl. It was a bit chewy though, probably better suited to be shredded than sliced like ramen chasu. The greatest sign of the pho being good was there wasn't any left to take home. Even at the best of ramen or pho places, we usually never finish it, but this time the bowls were left a drop or two. Shoutout to our blueish green haired server that night. Just about every table had a couple or a group to it and he was the only one seating and serving. Things were clearly frantic for him, but he was nothing but kind and helpful and accommodating. It's a shame we slept on this place during the cold, winter months when that bowl of pho could have been so comforting, but as my girlfriend reminded me, pho is for all seasons, especially summer. read more

I had the vegan pho which I find to be normally bland at other pho spots, but this place was amazing. Their booth seats are pretty intimate so it was nice to catch up with my relative in a corner. read more

Best Vietnamese food I've had a in a long time. We ordered the eggrolls, springrolls and the charboiled ones, all terrific. Plus the veggie banh mi and chicken fried rice stir fry. Everything was delicious, fresh, well seasoned, not overpowering but just right in the amount of flavor, sauces spot on, such a great meal and not heavy. And affordable and easy parking. The food is fine and the staff is nice for the most part, but the restaurant is grossly understaffed and under stocked. I've been here during the week when it was not busy and I'm here right now on a Sunday night where it's full and they have one poor girl doing all the serving and there's a rude little man with a superiority complex with his family interrupting the single server in the restaurant while she's taking orders. I've watched him before we were even seated and all he does is act like he is the only one in this whole restaurant. He already received their appetizer, their main food and drinks and decided to interrupt the server while taking our order for yet another "request." So inconsiderate and entitled. Also they have "run out" of bean sprouts and basil which I've never experienced at places that serve Pho. It's only 7ish pm on a Sunday night when most people probably eat. Staff your restaurant properly so that the server isn't cleaning, seating patrons, giving out the to go orders and serving. We ordered the pork vermicelli bowl and were severely disappointed with the serving size - this would be a small kids meal at best. It was empty when we arrived, however it quickly filled up with 5+ more parties within the next 30 minutes. I felt pretty bad for the server as he was the only one working front of the house during a huge Saturday night rush. Despite this, he was still pretty timely with his service. The pho was good with a pretty flavorful broth. I wish there was a bit more meat included but the broth was the star. What a trendy little gem nestled away in Burbank! I loved the decor and I appreciated that they also had bar top seating as an option too. The food was great - my only regret was that I was too full to try the "Lotus Cake", which is a pandan butter cake (sounds soooo good). I got the shaken beef with garlic noodles. The noodles were so yummy and garlicky + the cheese was a great addition. Shaken beef was AMAZING! I tried some of my boyfriend's pho and I actually really loved the broth. It hearty and aromatic! My boyfriend got a side of oxtail too; it was so tender and a great addition to the pho! I also really loved that the "Fresh Coconut" was legit a coconut (LOL) vs something in a bottle. I had a to-go order. I was disappointed. The broth lacks flavor. It's like it's made from bouillon or powdered base. The beef meat combo is pretty bad. It has what feels to be frozen meatballs cut into quarters so you don't even get a full one. The place is nice but I think that's the only plus. Well, this place isn't bad, but it isn't good either. For all the frou-frou new-agey attitude that it tries to project, it isn't really that in terms of food or service. "I am a warrior of light." is painted on the walls in the front. Right. This place uses two bad things in its food right off the bat that show it isn't any damn different that most average local slop-houses: MSG and canola oil. Most disappointing. It is somewhat veg-friendly, which I will say is a plus, although the choices in this category are meager. The service isn't exactly bad -- it is a small place usually run adequately by just one server -- but those servers are usually younger people that just expect to put in the bare minimum and aren't used to (admittedly) difficult customers (like myself). Such patrons need certain questions answered and concerns addressed. I was told different things by different people on different visits about certain ingredients in the food, and I don't appreciate being lied to. OK, enough with the negativity. Here's the good side. They serve a VERY strong Thai iced tea, and a nice quantity, too. You'll be a-zoomin' through your day. But then again, they have to compete for your caffeine dollar with the Starbucks next door. The "Curry Bites" are crunchy little sambusas generously seasoned with Vietnamese curry. Although dunk-fried in a mix that includes the afore-mentioned crapola oil, they are veg and tasty and served with the proper garnishments. I was willing to overlook a lot about this place because of these little suckas. Although lousy with "headache powder" (MSG), the veggie pho was satisfying and served with the appropriate accoutrements. And you can always get a fried egg or two on the side if you're feelin' the need. L&L recently added a semi-smart thing: a weekend breakfast menu to attempt to capitalize on neighboring Bea-Bea's copious morning overflow. (Bea-Bea's is one of the finest breakfast places in the area!) I don't know what they have that would be comparable, though; fried eggs served on a banh mi bun? I don't think anyone who just couldn't wait for BB's would be satisfied with this last-minute substitute, but I don't know. I can never get there early enough to try it. They stop serving it promptly at noon, and only on Saturdays and Sundays. "Om?" No. More like, "Eh." read more

Spring rolls were lacking vegetables but the peanut sauce was yummy. The vegan pho was not good at all. We were both so hungry so we ate a lot of our huge bowls but we struggled through it. It was very salty, sour and bitter. Only contained bitter vegetables such as kale, bok choi, and I think daikon. It needed more flavor and less bitter. We took it home to try to doctor it up but it was impossible to fix it. I think it actually got worse. Right next to starbucks on the corner, it's a very modern Vietnamese restaurant. Ample seating inside with lots of modernistic wood decor which looks nice with the natural light that shines through. We were the only customers at the time in the restaurant at the time so our server was very attentive and friendly. The Pho Dac Biet wasn't all that good because the broth was really bland in my opinion. Compared to other traditional pho places, this one doesn't taste traditional but its just passable on a whim.
