Cheap and good service. It will take you from one end of Edinburgh to other end for as small as £1.20. The buses cover the most of the Edinburgh and there is every needed route covered. If you travel alot, you can buy daily, weekly or monthly tickets, which are even better value. Busses are surely better idea than moving by car in Edinburgh, it is much cheaper, especially with parking cost, which are enourmous. read more

This is the main reason why Edinburgh doesn't need a tram service. LRT is an award winning bus service, will the trams exist? Ah, well, we'll see. I have noticed that there seems to be an upsurge in politeness in passengers, is this a result of the tram debacle? I've also witnessed a driver thanking customers as they leave (No26) and drivers paying children's fares from their own pockets (No11/?). There aren't many places in Edinburgh that aren't served well by LRT and a Day Saver at £3.20 seems a bit of a bargain if you need to visit many places in a day. The bus trackers at most stops are very helpful and even better is the smart phone app that can give you time instead of queuing up too early. My only gripe is that some drivers seem to think that when it's raining the temperature suddenly drops and that they need to put the heating on full blast, like the blast heaters when you go into some shops...but that's another matter. A trip to the lothian buses lost property department comes highly recommended. They keep your item for 30 days and only charge a small fee for retrieval and the staff are quite friendly. Items on show on my last visit included a large plush tiger and an infinite number of phones. read more

Several years ago I would have given Lothian Buses five stars but not now. As a monthly pass holder I have seen a steady deterioration in their services over this period. Prices have increased while services have been withdrawn or reduced. On the plus side they remain great value, due to the flat rate pricing system. However they could do so much better for the local people who pay them. 1 I live near to IKEA they recently withdrew the Sunday 47 buses to Penicuik. Now they run a single decker bus stopping at the Straiton park and ride not near the store 2 In August each year the population massively increases. More buses are needed but do they run any? Not likely! At this time of year buses already fairly full reach the park and ride at Straiton to find 50 people and more wanting to get on. Why is a shuttle service not operated during this month? Of course they need to notify the traffic commissioners to start and stop such a service but that is no major problem. I am fed up being squashed into packed buses! 3 The timetable is often such that buses stop in order to waste time so they don't run early. Why is the timetable not adjusted when this is a frequent occurance? 4 bus breakdowns are not infrequent. Especially in August. More spare buses and drivers seem to be needed to provide operational flexibility. 5 weekend evening buses and on a Sunday are not sufficient for those wanting to use them. read more

Due to the introduction of bus lanes on the busier streets of Edinburgh, taking the bus is becomming the way to travel as it takes a lot less time than taking the car. The bus drivers are mostly friendly and willing to help if you are unsure of what you are doing, also they have an excellent website and shops all over Edinburgh city centre where you can get information or pick up timetables. Lothian Buses also run tours of Edinburgh, buses combined with boats to tour the Firth of Forth and other specialist services. If you are looking for a longer period of time, bus passes can be a good idea, these can last a week, a month or a year and are great value for money allowing you to travel as much as you want over the specified time period. read more

Just wanted to say a massive thank you to the driver of the No.30 who sailed right past me this morning at the Ship Inn stop in Musselburgh, AGAIN! Despite seeing you approaching from quite a distance away and making sure that I was out of the bus stop and standing at the edge of the pavement with my arm held out to indicate that I wanted to board, you carried on right past me. This now makes it 3 times that this has happened. Having let it go on the first occasion, I did complain the second time, only to be promised a response once the matter was looked into, which never came! I won't bother this time either and have just cancelled my Ridacard direct debit so that when it runs out in 6 days time I won't ever have to bother your company by wanting to give you my business again! Also, when I was heading to the Jewel from the ERI a couple of weeks ago, the bus I was on was absolutely heaving, with there being standing room only. There was another 49 behind that looked like it only had 2 passengers on it. He followed the bus I was on all the way in to town and out to Portobello. Surely the driver of that bus is allowed to overtake the one I was on in order to accommodate passengers in seats? Maybe it's not allowed I thought, as the bus I was on terminated round the corner from the old Land Rover garage just before reaching Portobello, so I thought the one behind would be ready to pull in and accommodate all the passengers from my bus who wanted to continue onwards further along that route. Oh no, that would be too much like common sense. The bus behind shadowed us the whole way through town and out the other side, crawling along and stopping behind us at every single stop, only to then put his foot down and fly past us when our bus terminated at the old Land Rover garage. I presume he was too lazy to want to have to put himself out by having to actually pick up some passengers?! I might now have the extra costs involved in commuting by car to work, and the parking which won't be cheap, but I don't care. Best bus company in the UK? If so, I hate to imagine what the competition is like! read more

I'm a Ridacard holder and have been for 18 months. I pay by direct debit and I have only once experiened issues with my bus card. The buses are very frequent and keep time reasonabley well. Unfortunately the trams caused some delays, but hopefully now this is resolved we can see more prompt timetables. A great public service for Edinburgh and highly recommended! read more

Lothian Buses get a bit of a rough deal, but I really don't know why, I think they're great! With a one way ticket charge of £1.10 for adults and 60p for kids, provided you're going more than a couple of stops it's value for money as using the buses is the easiest way of getting around Edinburgh these days. They do a DaySaver deal which for £2.50 gets you unlimited travel all day on and off their buses. They've made a great effort to revamp most of their fleet, so the buses are pretty much all new and improved. I've always found them very clean and tidy. The new design of the buses means that they lower at the front to allow easy access for the elderly/infirm/wheelchair and pram users. There is a specially allocated space for pram and wheelchair users too, much more easily accessible than ever. It also has to be said that there has been a marked improvement in the attitude of drivers on Lothian Buses, and it really is a pleasant journey of one of their buses nowadays. read more

So many very very rude drivers! Today I was on a number 4 bus trying to catch a 44 just in front. Both buses were stopped at the same bus stop, the 4 just behind the 44. I asked the driver if I could get out to catch the 44, and was very rudely told "you get off when the driver decides" or something like that. Needless to say I missed the 44 and had to wait 20 minutes for the next one. It would have taken no effort on his part and drivers regularly let people off at the bus stop before driving forward to pick passengers up. Terrible service, and unfortunately drivers being rude like this are not the exception. read more

Efficient bus service that is usually on time. One thing that could be improved are the bus stops and maybe posting a route inside the bus. Unless youre familiar with the city, you have no idea where your stop is. Really inconvenient for tourists! read more

I work in Leith and live in Glasgow so my commutes are long. I take the 11, 14 and 7 from work to the train station and they are pretty much always late. They make me miss my train many days, and other days I've had to literally sprint to make it when according to their timetables I should be at Waverley with plenty of time to spare. It's extremely frustrating when you get home later and later because of the bus. And it does make a difference when your commute is 1.5 hours each way every day. Disappointing and if I had another inexpensive option I'd take it in a heartbeat! read more

I would like to say a HUGE thanks to all Lothian Transport bus drivers. They are, without doubt Heroes ! I have such great respect for them as, without them, myself and so many others could never have got where we needed to go in such terrible weather over the last week. When most people were stuck at home because they couldn't get their cars moving, our bus drivers were like soldiers going into battle and didn't flinch as they fought to get us to our every destination. Well, a few buses were re-routed or cancelled, but in the main, most were running. I honestly think that many of the citizens of Edinburgh who use the bus service don't realise just how fortunate we are in Edinburgh to have such a comprehensive and punctual service with mostly polite and thoughtful drivers. I know......there are a few grumpy ones, but they are the exceptions and that's the case the world over. I lived in Texas for a long time and never once ventured to try out their public transport as, believe me, it's a very, very far cry from what we have here. Having lived in a place where a car was an essential, not a luxury, and having had to drive hundreds of thousands of miles with many a huge traffic jam and a lot of stiff necks because of the tremendous tension of driving on 6 or even 8 lane freeways, it is a joy to hop on a bus here in Edinburgh and my driver takes me anywhere I want to go while I can read the paper, watch the scenery, have a nap or daydream. I tell you, we really are so well looked after. So, next time you take a bus, tell the driver you appreciate him and, of course, in true Scottish humility, he'll likely think yer daft : ) I had nothing but admiration for my driver on the 23 bus going to Glenlockhart on Saturday around 6pm. When he turned left from Balcarres Street into the steep Craighouse Road, the bus just couldn't move and I thought, Oh no! We're going to have to get out and push But, he continued to work on it and slowly got the bus moving up the hill. He had another tough manoeuvre up the street a bit, but again our hero managed to get his vehicle going and take us safely to our destination, only to turn around and face this same daunting task on his way back. my daughter was getting off a number 33 bus at the royal infirmary stop at around 4.50pm when she fell and did her ankle in. not only did the bus driver not ask if she was alright but as she hobbled to the a&e and was crossing the crossing he was glaring at her for taking so long. i was with her for two hours as we waited to be seen by a doctor. eventually we found out that she hadnt broken it but badly wrenched it with the main ligaments swollen so she is on strong painkillers and calling that driver everything but a gentleman. so if this driver reads this please if someone falls off ur bus just make sure they are alright before u drive off. read more

hello, we recently had an Easter break in Edinburgh. we decided the best way ton see the other parts of the city, was to use its bus service. we noticed on the bus "it's the people that make us..." We approached the bus driver, " is this the right bus to the tourist attraction Britannia?" he replied with a grunt "eugghh" so I asked him again! and he grunted twice! so I asked for 2 adults 1 child, "is it best to get a return?" I asked, he told me the price of the tickets, I went to pay with a note, "no no no!" he said, and pointed to the box, "NO change" "correct money..." can you change this note for me?... "NO" luckily enough, I managed to find the right change. Then the journey from hell began, the bus set off at break neck speed, "...accelerate...break...accelerate.. break...." A local elderly gentleman got on the bus, and greeted the bus driver "good morning!" he never replied!, so he said it again! and he was ignored again! the journey made us feel nauseous! we were pleased when we got off the bus overall a terrible customer service! read more
