This is the general hub for any long distance or between city travel. Whenever the time comes for me to travel home and back it's to this bus station I head and I'll talk here a little about both the journey and the station itself. The station is well placed; just off Princes Street and its back entrance leading into St James Shopping Centre. This is really a coach station and if it's local buses you are after you want Princes Street or Georges Street which are both a quick walk away. Once inside it's cosy enough and a lot warmer than Waverley Station can be on a cold night. There's usually plenty of seating, though last time I was here many of the seats had been taken out for some reason, but I'm sure they'll be back in due course. There's a few pricey shops here, but apart from toilets not much else, but its a bus station so you can't really expect much more. As for the journey, if you are going long distance (and I've been on a 13 hour trip from here before) it's not too bad, but you'll want to bring a variety of things to do. It always helps pass the time faster if you can swap activity every hour or so. I would recommend the buses from here mostly because they're cheaper than the train for long journeys.

Review Highlights - Edinburgh Bus Station

My trip down memory lane aside, this bus station hosts regular, reliable bus services all over Scotland and further a field too.

We used the ticket machine but a helpful employee also checked on us to make sure we're weren't having any problems. She then directed us to the next tram. It was very easy. I know that many in our tour group also used the tram when they arrived in Edinburgh and they had no problems either. The ride was uneventful, and quick until we arrived in the city. The tram was clean and quiet and we felt safe using it. As a visitor, I am aware that any discussion regarding the tram can get very political and heated but we really liked the convenience. We also had no problems buying tickets at the station when we traveled from St Andrews Square to the West End a few times. As it was festival season, the trams were quite crowded at times but the ride was always smooth and quick enough. We didn't use it when we returned to the airport as our departure was at 3am but if ever the tram ran all night, we would certainly use it.

I decided to get the tram and apparently you cannot buy tickets onboard. As a tourist I had no way to know this and was fined £10 which was my entire travel budget for my stay. Will never get the tram again and cannot afford the bus. Disgusted with your treatment of visitors to my once loved City.

Since I fall in the second group for Edinburgh, I can say that I was at first a little bit confused and slightly lost. That cleared up very quickly once I was directed to the Lothian office near Waverley Bridge. A friendly and helpful clerk (who must deal with people like me day-in and day-out) was able to explain the day ticket (£3? All day? Yes.) and provide me with a map of the bus routes. Five minutes later, I was waiting at my stop and five minutes after that, I was in the front row of a double-decker on the way to my destination. The bus ticket is surprisingly simple and very clever. I purchased three, as I'm here three days. Each one has a series of scratch offs for the day, month and year. You just scratch off the right date and you're good to go. Nice. The buses I've ridden have been clean and prompt. While the ride may be speedy, the roads are a little bumpy. I think my driver yesterday actually missed one of the drains! They also have an iPhone app (jeez, there's an app for everything!) so you can find the nearest stop and when the bus is due to arrive.

Price wise I believe is different depending on where you start. We alway stick to the return instead of one way. The station itself is pretty big. Lots of terminals so make sure to check the schedule to see where your train is at. Sometimes schedule changes so also be aware. There's a good amount of quick and easy eating places. Coffee shops as well. Right in the heart of the station, you'll find a couple of things to do. Mainly grab a drink if your waiting for your train.... lol... There alway security on hand if you have any questions about anything. The stations where you get on and off the train is pretty long so it could be a walk to exit if you're coming off from the end of train. It's a couple of flights on the escalator till you reach the top. There's an indoor waiting area as well as public restrooms. But if it's your first time, it could be a little intimidating finding your way around. Also a few different ways to enter and exit.

Visitors arriving into Edinburgh generally do so via one of two routes - fly into the city's airport, or disembark from a train at Waverley Station, the largest and most central of the city's two major stations. Waverley offers by far the most dramatic welcome into the city, with visitors emerging right into the heart of Edinburgh, with the castle ahead of you, the Old Town to the left, and the Scott Monument and New Town along to the right: it's kind of overwhelming while exiting. note: they have lift to take you to road level. Fact: it's the world's only railway station named after a work of literature. but prior to the station being named Waverley, it was formerly the North British Railway Station - run by the North British Railway company. There was a time when Scotland was referred to as 'north Britain', which may shed light on some of the country's identity issues!
