I will only dive Lost Reef Adventures next time I'm in Key West. We did a double-dip on the Hoyt Vandenberg and these guys and gals are great! I've dived around the Caribbean and these people rival anyone of great customer service for divers. They are friendly, carry your gear to the boat, make sure you have everything you need, they give a very thorough dive briefing prior to the dive on the Vandenberg, have super safe attitude, always have fun, and seem to want to make sure every diver has a great time. They hang a down line and safety bottle on every dive. Many boat never think about this but they do it for every Vandenberg dive. Our dive guide Eric was excellent. He was extremely thorough on making sure we knew the dive plan and exactly how things would go getting down, around, and back on the boat. He gave us two great tours of the wreck, in and out of nice swim-throughs, around the cool stuff, and back near the mooring line with time to swim around. Now don't think we are inexperienced cruise ship divers who love to have someone lead us by the hand. We've dove all over and appreciate an operation that give great service without being too controlling. I can't say enough about how much I like these guys after one set of dives. I've done Bonaire, Playa & Cozumel, Mexico, Jamaica, Bahamas, Key Largo, and plenty of others. LRA will compare to any on service and attitude. Thank guys!!! We'll be back soon! read more

My review is about the resort course offered at Lost Reef. I was a super beginner, never even gone snorkeling before, but I was determined to do this. I wanted to scuba dive so I decided to do the resort course where you are given basic scuba instruction in a swimming pool and then you are taken on a dive in open water later. Cool, right? Patrick was the dive instructor. He was SO PATIENT. I was having a rough time of it in the pool. My mask was not fitting right and kept being flooded with water. Being a beginner, I had no idea how to handle it. We eventually solved the mask problem and I was able to scuba dive in the pool as if I'd been doing it for years. Unfortunately, Hurricane Sandy was blowing past at the same time so the tides were high and rough and very dangerous for a beginner (boooo, hissss), so we were unable to go on the open water dive. This was the case up through the end of my vacation so I cannot review the dive portion of the resort course. I can report, however, that the whole staff was very helpful and friendly on every level in every way and that I was not charged for the pool portion of the resort course. I would definitely go back to them on my next Key West vacation. read more

Lost Reef Adventures made my Key West vacation!!!! Don't let the unassuming store front detour you because the staff and amazing wildlife you will see will blow your mind. I went as a solo snorkeler on a diving trip and was taken to some of the most beautiful coral reef I have ever seen. There were hardly any other people in the water which allowed you to feel more involved in the nature around you. I had been on snorkeling trips with two other companies while I was in Key West and both felt like I was on a cruise ship excursion. The staff on those trips were unhelpful and borderline rude. I was forced to keep my life vest on while in the water and needless to say I saw very few interesting things. The staff at Lost Reef Adventures encouraged questions and underwater discovery. They knew the reef very well and informed us of some of the things we might see down there. Most impressively was a 4.5 foot Nurse shark named Rocky who swam with me for several minutes. I swam through huge schools of Blue tang and found myself eye-to-eye with a Great Barracuda. If you want the best reef excursion in the Keys, GO WITH LOST REEF ADVENTURES!!! Im only using them from now on! Thank you to the staff and captain for making it a memorable experience. read more

My husband and I were on our honeymoon and were looking to get a few dives in. My husband dove the Vandenberg and we were signed up for another dive within 2 days. The crew made us feel comfortable and confident. They were full of knowledge and loved sharing any fun facts they could. They knew every fish we asked about and some cool history facts. Definitely a great experience with Lost Reef Adventures (Resort/Discovery Course + 2 Dives). Our instructor (Patrick) greeted us by our car at the parking lot, from there it went well to awesome ! Patrick was extremely patient and informative in every step of the way, especially with new divers in the group. From the pool to the sea, he guided us with care and patient; making sure we are well prepared for the dives. I would definitely recommend Patrick to anyone. A Star was taken away for the pool lesson. It seems like Lost Reef did not have its own pool. We were driven to a pool at bed-and-breakfast house, which is not an issue. However, the size of the pool was way tooooo small to fit the group nor to perform a practical/effective lesson sessions. Otherwise, the crew, the instructor and the dives were great ! read more

We feel like they took our money and wasted our time. We waited months and planned a trip for the lionfish tournament. They knew we were coming down for the lionfish tournament and said they were putting together a boat. Then they planned us for the afternoon dives on a different boat. It's well known that these are deepwater fish can be found anywhere but usually are hundred feet. All they did was take us on a tourist boat on a shallow water reef and we were the only people there who knew anything about the tournament. Rather than getting the three dozen that we expected we saw just one single lionfish. Everybody else who did the tournament and actually went with the boat that knew what they were doing did extremely well. If that wasn't bad enough, they sent us over to the other boat for the afternoon only to find out that they had made no arrangements. The other boat was going to a sanctuary and was not doing or permitting lionfish hunting. They also were going to a place that is well known to not have lionfish. The second boat made a point to tell us to make sure we were refunded from lost reef adventures because they had not been paid anything for the two spots that were supposedly reserved on the boat. It just seems in the three months they had they could've made one phone call. The crew was nice enough and appropriately safe that was about it. read more

Me and my husband spontaneously drove down to Key West for a couple days and decided to book a last minute snorkel tour. Everything about our experience with Lost Reef Adventures was EXCELLENT! The women who collected our payment gave us a military discount and shared her gratitude for my husbands service, coming from a military family herself. The captain and our snorkel guide (Mike) were amazing! They made the experience so personable and fun. This tour was great as well bc of the time you actually get to spend in the water. Ken was our guide and did an outstanding job and had a lot of patience with my wife. The shop, and boat crew were very friendly. My boyfriend and I had a fantastic experience diving with Lost Reef. Being fairly new certified divers, we appreciated the close attention from Dive Master Mike and guide, Frank. They made sure we were diving within our comfort levels and were very patient and took time to thoroughly explain things. It was a smaller boat so the group size was really nice for our trip (14 with crew). We went to 2 different reef locations. I was extremely disappointed by this dive operation and surprised based on the high rating in trip advisor. Another reason to actually talk to people then trust random people reviews. Who knows who is actually writing these favorable reviews. I'm a certified rescue diver that has been diving over 30 years. So I've seen a thing or two. And I don't fault Harley the kid on the boat, since he is just doing as he is told but the way they run their business seems dangerous if not just stupid. First off I should have known from the first call booking that this place was not the right fit as they gave little care to explain how things work at their dive shop. I went ahead anyway and unfortunately I was disappointed. The visibility wasn't great that day but they kept saying it's great, like I would t know the difference. They don't supply anything but water, which isn't that big a deal but most operations tend to give a snack between dives. They didn't discuss where we planned to go or give options. They didn't help at all with equipment (didn't need it but just saying, they expect you to know everything). They forgot to put me with a buddy until I was in water alone and they figured it out. I assumed it would t really matter as a dive master would be joining us. And that brings me to the biggest issue I have. They don't send guide (or local) with you on the dive. In bad visibility they expect you to have a watch (nobody did and they didn't warn you ahead of time to bring one), they expect you to know how to use compass and get back to boat without issue and they expect you know just down right know how to be professional diver. Now again I'm a seasoned diver and it's like riding a bike for me but I have never gone diving where they don't pair you and a few others with a diver from the company. They can take you on the dive, show you stuff and get you back safe. What about a safety stop? We didn't need one due to shallow depths but should t they discuss it? Maybe do it just to be safe? Anyway I have never seen this before and after when I asked they said I could have hired a guide for $70 more. How about include it for - few bucks more like every other operation, like everywhere. When I asked after what the deal was they made it out like I'm the moron for not knowing and requesting one. How about offering and explaining your dive operation in the first place and don't act like I was a burden. Bottom line I wouldn't dive with this company. Ever! I booked my first vacation in four years for an August trip to Key West, and unfortunately, booked a diving certification with Lost Reef Adventures. Even though the reviews on here are great, my experience was terrible. The dive instructor, Mike P, who I was assigned to didn't engage in small talk at all, which made the two day dive experience incredibly awkward. He was thorough yes, but there really wasn't a dialogue between he and I. On top of it, no one warned me about needing to take sea sickness pills, and I threw up quite a bit on my first day. And probably on my fourth round of throwing up, Mike (the instructor) yelled at me to throw up in my breathing device. He didn't offer me water or to help me get back on the boat. Other people on the boat helped and tried to joke about my sickness to help lighten the mood. On the second day, on my third dive, Mike made me take off my BCD in the middle of a school of moon jellyfish swimming around, which I still have scars from being stung. The moon jelly stung me on my shoulder, chest, abdomen, both arms, and back. Basically, I felt like I was being electrocuted, and I screamed and tried to kick the jellyfish away from me. I swam back to the boat, and he got onto it and proceeded to sternly tell me about not kicking jellyfish without offering any sympathy. Again, someone else on the boat offered to help, not my actual paid dive instructor. By this point, I was actively avoiding any unnecessary interaction with him and went to talk to other divers on the boat, when he noticed that my mask was on top of my head. He yelled at me from across the boat to take it off and then walked over toward me to remove it, interrupting my conversation without apologizing, which was very awkward and embarrassing. This was truly the worst experience I could have imagined for a first dive trip. The next day, I called Captain's Corner and took a dive tour with Stephanie, who was amazing and made the experience fun while teaching me cool tips and tricks. I learned that Mike P was literally a drill sergeant, so that explained a lot. If anyone wants a bootcamp/military/ unempathetic style of dive instructing, by all means, go with Lost Reef Adventures. If you're looking to learn while having fun and want personable instructors, I would suggest Captain's Corner. I explained my experience to the owner of Lost Reef, and he said he would follow up with Mike but never got back to me. If I could give Lost Reef zero stars, I would. read more

Highly recommend! I booked the 4 hour, 2 site snorkeling trip for my girlfriend and I. The water and current was strong and rough but that is something that is completely out of control! The crew was great! Our trip consisted of about 12 people so the experience was very personalized. The crew was very friendly, helpful and informative. Overall we were happy. We looked at other companies and the prices were twice as much and even passed one of their boats and looked like there was about 75 people, so to me it was such a great deal to have a more personal trip and instruction for half the price! read more

Had two days worth of dives scheduled got a call on Friday the night before that we were the only two on the boat the next day so not worth going out. Gave us the number of another dive shop so scheduled with them. The Sunday dive was confirmed on email to show up at 8:30am. Called at 8:20am to make sure it was still happening. The manager or person who answered the phone asked if we were in our way. We were. He said the boat is leaving. Remembering our confirmation email said arrive no later than 8:30am. Showed up and the front desk gentleman acted annoyed so i asked are we an inconvenience and he said no i just forgot to call you. We filled out our waiver and went to the boat again he seemed annoyed. Got to the boat and apologized for being late and the crew asked if we're scheduled to have a guide and I said yes we are so they had to rearrange the guests to accommodate us. We had Rachel, she was super nice. The dive master was great as well. After our first dive Rachel seemed checked out and asked if we wanted a guide on the second dive we said not necessary. The whole experience was not great. Dives were alright, but never need to come diving again with this company or Key West again. read more

This is my first time to come to Key West. Life long scuba diver with advanced certification. So I knew the diving in Florida was not that great. Lost Reef has a friendly staff and the boat is fine. The reason for three stars is the diving today was not very good and the surface interval was too short in my opinion. The first dive "reef" had a bottom of 29 feet. Down for about 47 minutes and my assigned partner was out of air. We get back on the boat and 14 minutes later the boat had moved and they called divers back in to the water. I stated that 15 minutes is not enough surface interval. The boat captain said the bottom is only eighteen feet you will be fine. I said maybe if you are 30 or 40, but I am over sixty and I am not going yet. Always amazed by divers who let young dive masters or crew change their dive training and planning. Experience tells me to sit this one out and I did. They were very nice and canceled my dive that I had scheduled with them for tomorrow. Due to current they are coming back to the same place. If you want to snorkel .....I would recommend this shop. If you want to dive.... stay on a plane and go to the Cayman Island unless you are just looking to get wet. read more

This was an experience! My first time scuba diving in Key West and I'm glad it was with theses guys. The check in was easy and gear I rented was top notch, excellent condition. Austin the ship captain, Mike the dive Master and Cliff my dive guide were absolutely awesome. So professional, chill and took great care of all divers. They could have easily laughed at me, it was an extremely windy day. Boat ride to the Vandenberg wreck site was a very bumpy ride. I only dive a few times a year, landlocked in Texas. I was clumsy, but this crew didn't care, they just made sure everything was cool. Thanks team Lost Reef. The dives were both awesome and I'll be back. Very highly recommend! read more

Had high hopes upon booking this trip for my fiance's birthday. I booked a SNORKELING trip but upon arrival to the boat found out they had combined our trip with a SCUBA DIVING trip. This was very upsetting not only were we cramped on a boat with little to no sitting room but now we were with a bunch of divers. The snorkelers were treated like low paying trash and made to sit out in the heat for 45 minutes before even taking off while the divers got geared up in the shade. The snorkelers had to bake in the sun the entire trip and only the divers were allowed to sit in the covered area of the boat. This was miserable as it is summer time in Florida and we got sunburned sitting there baking. When we finally arrived at our first location the snorkelers were told to jump off the boat and play around in this small area. All attention was paid to the drivers while we were ignored. To make matters worse we only saw a hand full of average fish, nothing unique to even brag about seeing! I have seen more fish hanging out at the beach. This is not a reef snorkel trip like they advertised. Both stops were very disappointing. I would not recommend this trip to anyone actually wanting to see fish. We stayed in Key West for 5 days for my fiance's birthday and we both agree hands down this was the worst experience we had. Everything else we did in Key West was absolutely amazing, this was just the worst! Do not waste your money! Go to Zachary Taylor Historic State Park and snorkel, you will see more and have a way better experience. read more

For a first time diver in Key West, I had no expectations except to be able to have the dive the way I wanted to enjoy it within the reasonable protocol of being a safe diver and in according with the shop. I called Nick, the owner, and I asked many questions, he was very prompt. I wanted to dive with my deco bottle and I still can manage to stay within same bottom time with everyone else. He suggested to send him my dive plan, which I did. His crews had similar attitude, very open and knowledgeable enough to understand what I was doing and 100% supported. Mike is a great DM, his brief was succinct, short, and fluid,  fully covered on all grounds. His attitude and his assistant DM, Alex , is commendable and making the dives much more relaxed. They are flexible but you have to communicate, and demonstrate your understanding of the risk and what your plan is. I highly recommend this shop. I will come back to them again. Mike and Alex have the best attitude and helpful in answering the problems that arise which I won't go into detail. As a pro diver, Nick is the kind of dive shop owner that would want to work for, no stress whatsoever and it sets the tne for the rest of the shop. Nuff said, go dive with these guys. read more

Great dive on the Vandenberg. Thanks to Mike for taking us around the wreck. It Was awsome to have the dive master take us to all the cool swim -throughs that we never would have found on our own as well as a stop at the must see satellite disk, which looked like the old deathstar after it blew up. I was suprised at the value for the money, so tried to make up for it in tip to Mike and crew. Probably still not enough. I told the shop I really wanted to go on the Vandenberg. They recommended I take a refresher dive lesson which was cheap. Easy call /money well spent. The girl at the shop told Mike that I wanted to go on the dive, and at the conclusion of the refresher, Mike offered to take us around the wreck personally. read more

Awesome place if you want to learn how to scuba dive or already know how. Our instructor was Mike. He was beyond informative and even has a cool life story! Knowing that he has been diving for 25 years made me feel that much more comfortable. After our morning in the pool going over basics, the boat took us out 2 different dive spots. The entire crew was phenomenal! The coral and sea life were breathtaking. Diving was the highlight of our trip. Key West never disappoints! Thank you Lost Reef Adventures for the lifetime experience! This dive operation was very friendly and professional. They setup gear for those who rent it. We just happened to have our own gear so we setup our own but they offered to help us out none the less. The guides were very serious when it came to safety and made sure everyone had a good time. Most of the people were on the boat were getting certified so they pulled us aside and described the sites to us in detail rather than just letting us figured it out which was nice. I would definitely dive with them again. They even provided me with tools to do a quick regulator swap at the shop before we headed out to the boat. read more

My college aged daughter took her open water diving instruction from Lost Reef. They did a FABULOUS job. Her instructor Frank was outstanding and made the learning FUN but thorough. I dove on several of the days and had a great time. The Vandenberg is a great dive. Their boat is new and beautiful, the crew is great and we had a very positive experience. Shawn was our dive master and gave great preview and instructions for a safe dive. I dive a fair amount (multiple times a year) and will be back to dive with Lost Reef again. read more

After two horrible experiences trying to rent bikes on Key West, the people at Lost Reef were a breath of fresh air! My boyfriend and I stumbled upon their shop on Margaret Street and signed up for an afternoon snorkel trip. Customer service was great - we were even given a hand-drawn map with directions to the dock. We got wetsuits at the shop but fins and flippers were available on the boat. Our captain, Austin, and Lily, were extremely friendly and accommodating throughout the trip. We made two stops to pretty similar reefs but were able to see a lot of cool marine life. If you're planning on going in the winter time, be sure to bring a sweatshirt because the boat is all open and it was very chilly on the way back! Overall, it was a good trip for the cost. read more

The first day we went out the seas were pretty rough but Captain Chris and Dive Master Ethan made sure we all got in and out of the water safely. Visibility was great. This was the first time my husband & I ever did an open water dive & I'm so happy we went with Lost Reef Adventures!!! Carolyn was our instructor and she was everything you could hope for in an instructor. She provided a safe environment for us, was warm and engaging & answered our myriad of questions. Her instructions were clear and under her guidance I knew everything was going to be A okay. We did two one-hour dives (as well as some pre-dive training) at a depth of 25 feet. My favorite moment was when Carolyn stumbled across a sea cucumber and we all got to take a look. The staff on board the DreamCat were awesome - friendly, energetic & very helpful. I had never been snorkeling before this trip, so I didn't really know what to expect, but I had a great time! They also take divers. The groups are much smaller than they are with some other snorkeling companies in Key West, so you get a lot more individualized attention and space to explore than you might on the bigger boats. We explored for about an hour at our first location, then got back on the boat and went to another reef and explored for another hour. The time seemed to fly so I'm glad it was as long as it was. Dive Master Mike was very nice and knowledgeable. I would definitely recommend this place to others. read more

I will always think very fondly on Lost Reef Adventures (Key West), thanks to a few of the dive instructors and crew. My wife and I went on a snorkeling jaunt at Western Sambo, the next day I completed a refresher dive course at the beach, and then that afternoon I went out on a guided shallow reef dive--all after 10 years since I had been diving. FABULOUS, completely comfortable experience all around, the captain and crew of the Dream Cat were true professionals--but there are some superstars. First I have to mention Sara, whom I liked from the first phone call from CA (& not just because she spells her name the way I spell mine-haha). She and all the staff were super helpful and accommodating! When I didn't have a doctor authorization (spank your bottoms Lost Reef for not having warned me) she and the owner Nick bent over backwards helping me get in touch with my doctor and get that paperwork done. She was also GREAT about letting me exchange a bag when the first one didn't wear well after a day, and she called up PADI central to get me information about online manuals. That plus keeping a smile on her face even when the very LATE people finally arrived (boo, hiss) for one of the trips. Secondly, let me thank Sophia, the guide for my reef dive, whose pristine dive skills I tried to emulate the entire time (learning along the way). She took us through the Haystack and along the fingers of the Cannonball Drop, where we saw so much. She also was a lovely person. But saving the best for last, a RAVE REVIEW for dive instructor Charlie, with whom I completed my refresher course. New to town, he freely admitted that the beach entry where we did our water portion of the refresher was new to him as well, and that we would explore together. I love it when a man can admit he doesn't know something! But what he does know is diving, dive instructing, and guiding!! He was so thorough in his instruction that I felt perfectly clear about what I was doing, then he did excellent demonstrations and followed that up with plenty of encouragement. Then when we were tooling around the little area off the beach, he showed us a ton of cool stuff underwater! Crabs, difficult to spot camouflaged fish, shrimp, sunken structures and even a tiny bottle that had been covered in stuff. On a total random note, I appreciated his recommendation of the casual Latino/Caribbean "Bien" restaurant, and I had an excellent meal from there (no inside seating). Nick, thanks for founding this place, keeping it going so long, all the interesting commentary in the van, and for hiring such amazing staff. If I ever return to Key West, I'm coming back to Lost Reef. read more
