My fiancé and I booked online with Lost Reef Adventures for our first ocean dives. We were certified back in October in a fresh water quarry. The day we went, the waves were pretty choppy. I got in the water and panicked. Kelly, our guide, expertly made sure I got back to the boat. Spencer, our dive master, helped me up and reassured me the whole time. I got to spend the next couple hours hanging out with Spencer and robin (the captain), which honestly, was a great time. What I loved is how committed they were to safety, and also making me feel valid in my decision to abort the dives. My partner successfully completed two dives and had a fantastic experience with Kelly guiding him. If/when we're back in key west again for diving, we will definitely book with Lost Reef again!! read more

Lost Reef Adventures...the worst dive shop that I have encountered in 30 years of scuba diving. The negatives: The owner, Nick, was extremely unfriendly to the point of being hostile. He had a serious attitude problem and had no idea what the concept of "customer service" meant. He just stares at you, waiting for you to say something...it's really creepy. After telling us to show up at 7:00 for the morning dives, no one from the shop bothered to show up until 7:45. The crew was only okay. The dive master acted like this was an annoyance to be taking us out on a dive...like he just wanted to get this over and done with. He just swam around for 45 minutes until it was time to re-board. The boat pilot told us, "We're not leaving the dock until you get your gear ready." There was one guy (with a mullet and ear rings) that was pretty cool and very helpful. The equipment was fair, but had some issues. The first tank that I hooked up to only had 1200 psi, turns out that 1/4 of the tanks onboard had previously been used and not removed or refilled. The fact that they all had the rubber covers on the valve (indicating a fresh tank) made it very confusing as to which tank to use. My dive buddy's regulator was inoperable. The dives were fair at best. I guess Key West really isn't that great for sea life when compared to the USVI or Belize, buy the dive master didn't even bother to point out sea life. EVERY dive I've been on in 30 years had a dive master that took pride in his/her job and did their best to point out - things to see - during the dive. I told the travel office on the base at Sigsbee not to recommend them. There are vastly superior shops like Southpoint Divers and Captain's Corner that will give you a much more pleasant experience. I dove with Southpoint on all of my subsequent dives in Key West. The positives: The boat was great - lotsa space for everyone, safety equipment was plentiful, and the safety briefing was well done. As I mentioned before, one of the crew (lives in Roatan, Honduras and was visiting his daughter) was very helpful but unfortunately, he was the exception. The BCDs, masks, and fins were fine. There's not really anything else positive that came out of my experiences. Do yourself a favor and use one of the other dive shops in Key West. read more

Dave was an awesome master diver for our group, we were snorkeling and diving, he ensured we were all thinking safety first. We went to two reefs and they were both great though the second reef was awesome! None of my phone pics turned out or I'd have them on here. We were here for a month during the boat races of November. With weather and vacation plans changing by the day the shop was very helpful and flexible with our schedule. They were undoubtably focused on ensuring that my wife and I felt well taken care of. Can't say enough positive about this staff and our extended interaction with them over the length of our stay. We did the Discover Scuba course. I'd never been sucba diving before and was honestly pretty nervous leading up to the day but our instructor and guide, Dave, was amazing! We spent the first half of the day learning material and then practicing in a pool and then the fun began! By the time we did the actual dives I was totally comfortable. On my first reef dive, we descended upon Maker 32 and I used my brand new GoPro rig to capture my favorite moments. On my swim back to the boat, my GoPro somehow disconnected from my set up. I didn't notice until I was to the boat and I was crushed. Two days later, I get a call from Lost Reef. Another diver FOUND MY GOPRO, and the same instructor who was on our boat two days before, Dave, secured it for me. I was elated, and I cannot describe what this meant to me. First off, I am an experienced diver, and have dove with many dive shops around the world. I dove four days, back to back, for a total of eight dives. Four were on the Vandenberg. If you do visit the beautiful Vandenberg, understand that this is an advanced dive due to depth and the possibility of a current. Complaints that I read below: "There were no snack during the surface interval." So? Is this a restaurant or a dive shop? Bring some Gatorade or a can of soup. "They didn't explain things very well." You have to listen during the briefing. They run through it. If you can't hear, ask. "They don't send a dive master down with you to dive." I prefer greater freedom during my dive. If you need someone to dive with you, ASK and work it out with them. As always, listen to the briefing. Go over your buddy's equipment, so you know where things like his low pressure inflator, weight releases, and alternate air are. PUT together a dive plan based on your diving skills, Especially on the Vandenberg. read more

Lost Reef adventures was great for my children to get certified. They both completed the online/classroom and pool check offs but were in need of their final open water dives. The dive master was very patient with them. My husband and I were able to go on the 4 dives with them over a 2 day period while they were in training with their dive master. They processed my children's new Padi cards and we were well on our way to more additional dives once they were certified. My husband and I tried our hand at SCUBA diving. I've been once before YEARS ago. My husband was a newbie. I don't remember the resort instruction being as involved when I went 18 years ago. Our instructor Travis was patient and calm and had tons and tons of experience. If it's your first time, ask for him. You won't regret it. My husband probably would have been done in the first hour if it wasn't for him. I can't speak highly enough of the way he handled the two rookies he dealt with today :). Went down to the keys for a few days to get in some time on the Vandenberg, Joe's Tug and some fish spotting. The shop offered a very reasonable rate for a 3 pack (2-tanks per set). Pro-shop was sufficiently stocked for your needs (no hoodies though, boo :)) Our captain and crew were all very knowledgeable; and adhered to all the normal safety provisions. Boat was clean, tidy, with a sea head that included a shower (which was a nice touch). Like every dive shop in the Keys it's bring your own snacks. Don't expect fresh fruit between dives. Unlike the dive shops "Up North" like Key Largo, Isla Marada, etc... In water guides were extra and many people brought their own. This was a first for me. It was interesting. Fortunately the reefs, and Joe's tug didn't need them, but definitely consider one for the Vandenberg, it takes an "Okay" dive to extraordinary. They did let us dive our skill levels, so when we were down on the wrecks, it wasn't as "You have X minutes from the time you hit the water." Which is VERY important when you have divers of different skill levels. Deck hand and captain got everyone in and out of the water safely, quickly, and efficiently. They handled our one panicked diver with complete calm. Ultimately, this is a great shop, I'd definitely recommend them. read more

This review is for Lost Reef, the fantastically helpful and organized scuba shop that escorted me to the deep (not really) and wild underworlds of the sea. I'll tell you who was NOT lost: https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/2/29/Epinephelus_malabaricus.jpg ^^That handsome fella.^^^Here I am, swimming along (read: flailing because finding your proper buoyancy in a bikini is no joke) and THAT guy comes up around a reef with his big ol' mouth out and I was SCARED. I attempted to hide from him by flattening myself against the white sands (I guess I was better at being not so buoyant than I thought) because I forgot he doesn't give an eff about me, he's actually just looking for little fishies to stuff in his piehole. Also, I was an idiot. Grouper aside, Lost Reef did an excellent job of organizing everyone, making sure everyone felt comfortable whether they were snorkling or diving. The reefs were about 20 minutes offshore and while a little crowded on the boat, the divemasters did a great job of helping everyone get ready and answer questions. They described the dive well, what areas to aim for, and even switched out our tanks for our second dive. Also a positive note worth mentioning- the gear. Each kit looked and felt new with great masks, smooth breathing regulators and non-rubbing fins. This was my very first tropical dive after being trained in 50 degree waters and I was nervous how it would go given the radically different water temps (I could live in 83 degree water, seriously) and without a thick wetsuit- Lost Reef was extremely accommodating for divers of all levels. I thought about diving outside of Marathon, but Im extremely happy with diving with Lost Reef out of Key West. Pro tip: Grab a high-octane cuban coffee across the parking lot with a big sandwich to fuel up prior to a couple of fantastic dives with Lost Reef. read more

We had such a great time diving with the folks at Lost Reef. My boyfriend isn't certified, so he did the discovery scuba course, and I did the refresher course in the morning of our dive. We were staying at the Perry Hotel, which was perfect because Lost Reef teaches the scuba skills at the Perry Hotel in the morning and brings all the gear you need. Sage, our instructor, was very calm and explained scuba diving skills in a step-by-step manner that was very reassuring and took away any concerns about diving. She took the time to make sure we understood everything before the next step. My boyfriend felt ready and reassured going into our afternoon dives. For the dives, sometimes there's an option to leave on Lost Reef's boat from the Perry. This time, we had time for lunch and met Sage at Lost Reef's dive shop downtown. It was easy to grab our hotel's shuttle and walk a short distance to their shop. Sage, the two Mikes, and Jay (captain) were fun to be around on the trip out to the two reefs. Saw some awesome fish, spiny lobster, and more. Lost Reef is great! read more

My friend and I recently rented SCUBA equipment from Lost Reef. The gentleman working behind the counter was unfriendly and unhelpful. He rented out a tank which didn't work and when we told him about it after returning the equipment he just shrugged his shoulders and said "oh well." This cost us a dive, which was really disappointing. Furthermore, the BCDs were really aged and one of the octopuses had a slow leak. This place seems like a tourist trap, spend your money elsewhere! read more

This place was amazing! My boyfriend and I went snorkeling at 9 am and had the best time. It was a nice small group, which was perfect. It felt like we were out with our friends. Shaina and Captain Mike were so helpful and offered lots of tips and suggestions to make our trip great. We saw several large sharks, some kind of ray (think Mr. Ray from Nemo), a turtle, and of course schools and schools of beautiful fish. My 3 sons and I were greeted and checked in with a friendly smile and she assisted us in getting all of our necessary gear including fitting my 13 y/o son with his own mask with great attention to detail and patience. I did a morning dive to the Vandenberg one Saturday and then did an afternoon dive to the reef with them. They had great customer service when I called to book a few weeks in advance and I didn't even have to put money down in advance. I had two friends do a discover scuba lesson, which was reasonable at $169/person for the pool lesson and then for a 2 tank reef dive. The price for a 2 tank dive is great at $70, but the gear rental is a little bit expensive, I think $45 in total. Because two of my friends were only Open Water Certified we had to pay $75 extra for the Vandy dive, but it was definitely worth the money as our guide Dave showed us a lot of the cool parts of the boat and had great swim throughs the Vandy. Our first stop at the reef had terrible visibility and a strong current. It was easily one of the worst dives I've done, but they managed to salvage the day by sending us to another reef further away where there was great coral reef. Overall, I was really happy with my experience and the customer service of this dive shop. read more

My family and I are still relatively new to the scuba scene. I booked two-two tank dives two days apart a little over 1.5 months prior to the trip. This also included my 12 year old son's final 3 & 4 dive for certification. We came into the shop the day prior to ensure that everything was on track. All three of us tried on our rental gear and the young lady at the counter checked our dive logs to ensure our certifications. At this time, we informed her that we would meet them at the dock and did not need to come to the shop to be picked up, either day. We were provided a map and the lady asked me again to clarify if my wife and I needed a separate dive master as a guide, to which I replied yes, as we did not want to make our son nervous with his certification dives. We provided her our OTS masks as agreed upon with the gentleman I initial spoke with and from there, it all went down hill. We arrived at the parking area about 10 minutes prior to the recommended time to find out the map that was drawn for us was incorrect. When my wife contacted the shop for clarification, she was spoken to by a man that seemed upset that they had waited for us at the shop, even though we made it clear we did not need a ride. We made it to the boat and later would find out that they forgot our OTS guardian masks that were brought to the shop the day prior to hook up to the Octos. The Captain asked if we could use regular masks, but was told no, because we paid a lot of money for these masks and planned to use them. Our son was approached by Hunter, his dive master, who took him aside and talked to him about his final dives and what to expect; however, he did seem a bit upset that we did not have a referral form with us. To be fair, we were informed of this both on the phone and in the email; however, our dive shop in Colorado, A1 Scuba, stated on three occasions that the book serves as the referral form now. After getting on the boat and receiving our briefing, we departed to the first dive site; however, it wasn't until the boat's mate informed all divers to put their gear together did we realize they neglected to have our guide there. We were able to hook up our gear as required, but at this point my wife and I were a bit upset that they never even bothered to tell us and after over a month and a half to prepare. Also, even though the depths did not exceed 30 feet, we did request dive watches, which again were not provided. The Captain informed us as to our heading in the water and area of best sights. My wife and I went down and followed the compass religiously; however, the current was so strong when we surfaced we found ourselves over a football field away from the stern of the ship. If you had a chance to look at our video with only 12 dives under your belt, a good portion of those in an aquarium, you would have freaked out. My wife and I used every bit of our strength to get back to the boat, swimming against the current for about 20 minutes, and to top it off, the Captain decided to try and lecture us while still in the water at the bottom of the ladder, to which my wife asked him if he could wait until we were back in the boat. Once back on the boat, they told us we should have followed the directional heading given by the dive master, to which I replied, "What Dive Master" "Your company did not supply us with one." Needless to say, the boat went to the next dive site, which took less than 10 minutes and then we were told it was time for the second dive. My wife and I declined to take that dive; however, we did during this time call the dive shop and cancel our next dive. Our son got his certification dives completed, which is all that mattered to us. Once back at the shop, we explained the scenario to the very professional lady at the counter who discounted our overall bill to accommodate for the problems, which I appreciated. She also went on to verify that even if I followed the East heading on the compass religiously, which we did-as I reviewed our video, the current could continue to move us and we would still be on the same heading. Something I guess could have been handled by the guide we requested. Oh, and to top it all off, the Captain smoked on the boat and allowed others to do so as well, to include one guy that smoked at the back of the boat inches from the fuel tanks. You all must make up your own minds regarding whether to book with them, but my recommendation is to ensure, multiple times, that they are doing what you have requested before you get on the boat, and if not, walk away! read more

This place is awesome! After asking around, we booked One Day Discover SCUBA course (no cert required) with Lost Reef Adventure. Charlie was our PADI certified instructor. The package includes all needed equipments. It breaks into 2 sessions: Morning: about 2.5 hours introduction & practice at beach to get used to equipment & breath underwater. It was very informative & helpful. Afternoon: 2 of one hour dives at two different dive spots. Charlie was very patient and attentive. He made sure we were comfortable with our equipments, checked with us frequently during the dive, pointed out bunch of fun stuffs that we would otherwise missed. It was great fun! We saw a sand shark swimming by (it was too fast to catch up with), a sea turtle pooping (not so pretty of image ), some spiny lobsters (looked very delicious ) and bunch of beautiful fishes!
