Even though the bite wasn't great, it was still a beautiful day on the water. The mate clearly wanted everyone to catch fish and worked hard throughout the trip. You could tell he genuinely cared about helping people have a good experience. My only constructive feedback would be that I would have liked to see us change locations or try a different approach a little sooner. With only a handful of passengers on board, there was some discussion about switching things up, and looking back, it felt like it may have been worth trying earlier. That said, nobody can control the conditions, and I understand there are no guarantees when it comes to fishing. While it wasn't our most productive day on the water, we still enjoyed the trip and appreciated the effort the crew put in.

They helped with baiting the hooks, unhooking the catches, cleaning the fish, and providing unparalleled entertainment. We couldn't have asked for a better day on the water, the fish were biting and the weather was absolutely perfect. The captain kept putting us right on the fish and we ended the trip with plenty to bring to a restaurant for a hook and cook dinner. I can't recommend this place enough, the price is right and the people running it and keeping it going are great. The captain even let us know when a pod of dolphins were nearby so we could enjoy seeing them! Such an unexpected and great bonus to the day! It is BYOB if you want, but onboard they do have some beverages and snacks for purchase (cash only on board), but we brought our own which worked out well. Tickets can be purchased with debit or credit cards, but cash on board is king for drinks/snacks, tips, and fish cleaning so make sure to bring some cash for your day on the water! If you're in the middle keys and want a great value for a fishing trip without a full charter, this is the best there is and totally worth it.

I live in Miami and it takes me about two hours to get down to the Marathon Lady but it is definitely worth to drive and I pass about a dozen other party boats on the way. There is no party fishing boat that is better than the Marathon Lady, I know because I have tried them all. It's a family run business, and all of the crew always recognized me and my cousin. The Marathon Lady is the only Fishing boat that I recommend to everybody.

We were on the water for about 1/2 day and plenty long enough to get some sun and catch enough to have a mess of fish for dinner later. We fished and moved to at least 4 spots. Be sure to bring plenty of sunscreen. We also packed a small cooler with drinks and snacks. Don't forget the hand sanitizer -- you'll be glad you did after handling bait and (hopefully) any fish you catch! When we returned to the dock, the crew prepped and filleted our catch for a nominal fee. Tips are appreciated and should definitely be considered a standard practice by patrons and not just a courtesy. Well earned after the hard work of a day on the water. The boat charter can accommodate about 40 passengers; however, on the day we went, we were at about 2/3 capacity. Customers were a wide skill range from rookies to regulars. We took our fresh prepped fish home and sautéd it later for an impromptu house party for 7 diners. Great experience to be able to eat something we'd caught earlier that day!

I got in the water and panicked. Kelly, our guide, expertly made sure I got back to the boat. Spencer, our dive master, helped me up and reassured me the whole time. I got to spend the next couple hours hanging out with Spencer and robin (the captain), which honestly, was a great time. What I loved is how committed they were to safety, and also making me feel valid in my decision to abort the dives. My partner successfully completed two dives and had a fantastic experience with Kelly guiding him. If/when we're back in key west again for diving, we will definitely book with Lost Reef again!!

Lost Reef Adventures...the worst dive shop that I have encountered in 30 years of scuba diving…read more The negatives: The owner, Nick, was extremely unfriendly to the point of being hostile. He had a serious attitude problem and had no idea what the concept of "customer service" meant. He just stares at you, waiting for you to say something...it's really creepy. After telling us to show up at 7:00 for the morning dives, no one from the shop bothered to show up until 7:45. The crew was only okay. The dive master acted like this was an annoyance to be taking us out on a dive...like he just wanted to get this over and done with. He just swam around for 45 minutes until it was time to re-board. The boat pilot told us, "We're not leaving the dock until you get your gear ready." There was one guy (with a mullet and ear rings) that was pretty cool and very helpful. The equipment was fair, but had some issues. The first tank that I hooked up to only had 1200 psi, turns out that 1/4 of the tanks onboard had previously been used and not removed or refilled. The fact that they all had the rubber covers on the valve (indicating a fresh tank) made it very confusing as to which tank to use. My dive buddy's regulator was inoperable. The dives were fair at best. I guess Key West really isn't that great for sea life when compared to the USVI or Belize, buy the dive master didn't even bother to point out sea life. EVERY dive I've been on in 30 years had a dive master that took pride in his/her job and did their best to point out - things to see - during the dive. I told the travel office on the base at Sigsbee not to recommend them. There are vastly superior shops like Southpoint Divers and Captain's Corner that will give you a much more pleasant experience. I dove with Southpoint on all of my subsequent dives in Key West. The positives: The boat was great - lotsa space for everyone, safety equipment was plentiful, and the safety briefing was well done. As I mentioned before, one of the crew (lives in Roatan, Honduras and was visiting his daughter) was very helpful but unfortunately, he was the exception. The BCDs, masks, and fins were fine. There's not really anything else positive that came out of my experiences. Do yourself a favor and use one of the other dive shops in Key West.

This could be because the "humor" was at his wife's expense, and he was in the presence of a lady, a child, and a senior. This is not the type of humor that I would consider appropriate for a family fishing trip. I also found it distasteful, the names that he was calling his ship mate, and his comments about rape. This man seems to have quite the Napoleon complex. I will never recommend this charter. I have also notified my local friends of our experience and lack of respect from Captain Brent.

I need to preface this with the experience being 100% my fault for not recognizing the finesse job…read morefrom the beginning. My brother in law and my self were going to Marathon for a fantastic vacation in an air b and b for the last week of March and both loving fishing we thought it would be an excellent time to charter a boat and have a local give us a DEEP sea fishing experience as that is something we both havent had. Marathon is known for its Marlin, Tuna, Grouper and Mahi mahi to name a few and we were excited to battle these monsters. We by passed the group charter because they really cant do any deep sea fishing and mainly stay static. We ended up choosing to charter a 3/4 day trip for $1050. The first day was canceled due to high wind ...understandable. Second day we were up bright and early only to be told he was going to be late. We were on the boat by 8:15 and the first thing JJ says is "Ok whos got the money?" So we paid the man and then it got interesting with the rules of the boat. Basically none but if we had any questions just ask and oh yah if you need to pee just pee off the front of the boat and if your shy ..."here just pee in this cup and throw it overboard". I kid you not this is what this man said. And #2 we dont even entertain that thought even though there is a head on board the boat. It was starting to feel like we had been friends for a long time and he just borrowed the boat so we needed to be extra carefull with it especially when he busted out the soft scrub every 5 minutes to clean the boat. We then end up at the bait store and he purchased some frozen Ballyhoo I guess thats all you need. From there it was a five minute jaunt to the reef so I thought we could catch bait fish. We were using #2 not 2.0 but #2 hooks without any weights and just letting the tiny piece of Ballyhoo he put on the hook sink it. He cut up 2 Ballyhoo to use and we caught tiny fish after tiny fish( not keeping any of them)and I finally busted out my own rod and set up with a simple leader a 1/2 oz weight and a larger hook and what do you know we caught the only keeper on that rig. THis went on till around 10 when the group charter boat showed up and fished not far from us. That was a clear sign that I ignored but JJ moved the boat after that to another spot just 2 minutes away. No 7 mile bridge no marathon hump and still no deep sea fishing. Now to be clear JJ offers 2 different types of fishing experiences to choose from one being reef fishing and the other being deep sea fishing and we were clear on wanting the deep sea experience. At this point we were pressing for the deep sea fishing and he gets frustrated and says we dont have enough time but goes below to rifle through his gear and 1/2 hour later he pulls out these 2 ratty old lures which sucked because you cant even use all four lines if you only have 2 lures. That wasnt stopping us so I rigged up a split beak Ballyhoo rig I learned from you tube and used it as our third line. 20 minutes and wham zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzrzrrzzzzzzzzzzzzzrrrrrrrrrrrrrzzzzzzzzzzzz the Ballyhoo rig got hit hard. The line was spooling out so JJ stopped the boat to grab the line...I kept asking what he needed like should I get the other lines out of the way and such but he didnt say anything just started to reel it in and it kept taking the line. I was super excited and all the baloney that happened earlier was the furthest from my mind as this was a big fish. ZZZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzzzzSnap.... dam it was pure adrenaline and then complete silence. We set the lines back up just the 2 this time so we could maximize our time while I set up another Ballyhoo rig. I grab the pole that had the original rig that broke and started to pull the line out so I could feed it through the eyes of the pole and guess what ZERO drag. At this point I was getting sick to my stomach and needed to use the head. He is not happy that my inner Grogoo has to use the force on his boat but reluctantly he moves a bunch of stuff around so the toilet can be accessed. He then says im good to go and lets me in and shuts the door. What do you know there is no light to turn on and its pitch black ,,,,go figure. Not sure what he was thinking as this could get a whole lot messier for him lucky my aim is true. He calls it at 1 and says we need to head back in....back in with 1 9 inch fish that he cleans for us ...thanks man you rock JJ. What ever you do dont let him pick what to do because he will pick the easiest least gas using least fish catching least boat cleaning thing to do. Bait used - 3 frozen Ballyhoo , didnt have enough lures only 2 Fish caught - 1 Keeper
