We had a terrible experience here, and if I can do anything to help others, it's to recommend staying clear of this salon's "junior stylists". My daughters long beautiful hair was butchered by a young man with a mohawk. Her hair could have been donated to Locks of Love - it was that long, and this young, inexperienced "stylist", with shaking hands, cut her hair just under her ear! We'd asked for a long bob, grazing her shoulders. It was a horrific experience, and NO ONE from the salon reached out to check in on us or even apologize. Don't be fooled by Paula's soft-spoken manner. She is professional, friendly, and she has a knack for building rapport with her clients. By the end of the session, she really got my style, which is a huge plus in a hair stylist. I went from a mousey brown to a deep, multi-dimensional red - and she rocked it. She told me how she uses a person's bone structure and features to build color. I had never heard that before, but based on my look now, I believe her. The cut was also great. It was probably an easy cut, but she built out a lot of volume in what is otherwise usually flat and semi-fine. In and out in just under 2 hours - pretty standard. The feel of Badlands is super casual, but professional. I was offered drinks, the staff checked my comfort level throughout my time there. Price is NYC standard at $145 for cut & color. UPDATE: Since my first cut, I've worked with Paula, Katie and Lexi. Paula and Lexi for color, and Katie for a Karlie Kloss-esque shag cut. I'm not usually one to bounce between stylists, but shit - when they're all so good at what they do, it makes it so much easier to set appointments at a time that's convenient for me. So, I called Badlands last month to get a bang trim and touch up of the straightening treatment I do with my girl Paula before I went on vacation only to be told she was on a "leave of absence." No one could tell me when she would be back. Instead, I was booked with Natasha, but when I arrived for my appointment, she told me that she didn't know how to do the straightening treatment. The only other person who could was Katie, who couldn't see me until Thursday - the day before I was leaving. Grudgingly, I scheduled with Katie, who did do a nice job on my bangs, though the straightening treatment really didn't do much. But Paula's been cutting my hair since I moved to Brooklyn, and really, no one gets it quite like her. Without her, Badlands isn't quite the same. So when I discovered that she is now at Meura (basically across the street on the corner), I went back to her. May 7th, this review is an update about the hostess Maggie. My original appointment was set on May 14th. However, I really needed a hair cut so I called to change my appointment to the 7th. On the phone, I was greeted by Maggie. I asked her for reschedule appointment and she took care of it without any hassle. She was very professional on the phone. The next day when I arrived for the appointment and I saw Maggie, she was sweeping the floor. I said hello to her and she smiled back, then she said to me, Paula will be with me in a few moments. She noticed I was walking towards the bench. And, I noticed her looking at the bench and on it was full of bags and some clothing. She was very thoughtful to move those things to the side and offered me to sit. In addition, she offered me something to drink. After my hair cut was done, I approached her and I asked for the bill. Initially, I thought I heard she said about forty something dollars, therefore, I handed her 60$(20$X3, I didn't have other change). What was surprising to me is that she handed back to me about 32 or 33$ dollars with some change. Quickly, I asked her if she gave me the right amount. She said, yes. I said to her, I think you gave me too much money. She looked at the laptop screen and then told me no, the bill was about 26 or 27 dollars with change(I can't remember exactly the price she said). I thank her for her honestly. This is the right way to conduct any business. She expresses good morals and valuable virtues. People like her, in my opinion are hard to find these days. Before I go, I wanted to give gratuity Paula for her service but she went to the back of the salon. Therefore, I want to ask Maggie to assist me but she was with another client. Thus, I waited by standing next to her. She noticed I was standing, and she broke up the conversation with that client and asked me if I needed something. I apologized first for disturbing their conversation, then I asked her to help me with the gratuity and handed her the money. She smiled and said "Of course". This place has very good qualities in terms of business, environment and personnel. WIthout doubt, I recommend the Brooklynites to support this local business and keep it running to its fullest potential. read more

I've followed my stylist around for the last four years. She's moved around Park Slope a bit, but Badlands has been the best fit for both her and me. Natasha has been coloring and styling my hair since she moved to NYC. Her skills as a colorist are incomparable. I have naturally dark hair, but my blonde coloring is so well done people doubt me when I reveal my natural hair color. We did a pastel ombré thing this summer, too. People kept stopping me on the street to ask me who did it. I like the salon too; the prices are very fair for the neighborhood, and they once let me recover from a massive hangover in their backyard. read more

I have followed Kala around to quite a few salons (because she's the BEST), but Badlands is honestly my favorite that I have been to. It's in an awesome location and the receptionist is always super friendly. It's very warm when it's chilly outside (yay!), they always offer a drink (water, tea, even beer if you want!), and the bathroom is seriously adorable (I know, I know, a cute bathroom is definitely not a reason to go to a salon, but it doesn't hurt either!). I have very fine, thin, blonde hair and Kala has been double-processing it for years. Every time after I leave, I get tons of people stopping me on the street to compliment it and ask where I go, which is an amazing feeling. My hair is in great shape, and I always feel like it is in very safe hands. The music is always bumping, and the other stylists all seem super friendly and adept. I've seen people with all kinds of hair leave this place looking awesome, but I can say for sure that if you are rocking shorter hair you should DEFINITELY come to Badlands. I went to another place and got my hair totally mutilated, and a friend suggested I check this place out. Aimee was GREAT. She listened to what I wanted, was particularly attentive to what I DON'T want, and gave me a great cut that will grow out well. She also knows how to style my short, curly hair, which lots of people do not know how to do. Also, now when I go back I'm really just getting the sides and back trimmed, since I'm growing the rest of it out, and so when I was there last she made sure I got charged accordingly. Since I need to get my hair cut more frequently because it's quite short, this is a great feature. In short: everyone is super nice, it is reasonably priced, the stylists are delightful and creative and know how to style hair, the space is cool, the vibe is wonderful, and it is an inclusive and open environment, so you can feel good about spending your money there. read more

I love this salon. I've been here 3 times so far over the past 6 months and have never been disappointed. The first time, I was chopping off all of my hair and Paula was my stylist and she was amazing. She suggested that I spend a couple of days with my new haircut to see if I liked it and if I wanted anything at all changed to come back for no charge. I ended up returning a few days later and Paula changed my haircut from great to amazing. I returned a couple of weeks ago and, yet again, Paula knocked it out of the ballpark. She initially didnt have any availability but she was willing to squeeze me in to her schedule which I really appreciated as a I needed the haircut and styling for a wedding that same day. This is definitely my go-to place and I have recommended it to many of my friends. The staff is friendly and accommodating, the salon space is cool, and the neighborhood is awesome. On the recommendation of a friend who comes to Badlands regularly, I dropped in last week for a cut with Katie. I came in with long layers and left with a very cute bob and bangs that can be styled a bunch of different ways. Katie was super sweet and took the very little direction I gave her and ran with it, giving me probably one of my favorite haircuts of all time. (What matters of course is that I personally like my hair... but it doesn't hurt that it's gotten compliments left and right!!) Whenever I'm in New York again, I will absolutely come back to Badlands and have already recommended it to all of my friends in the city. You will check out your reflection in car windows after a haircut at Badlands. I just went in for my second cut with Deirdre, and I feel awesoooooome--it's sleek and hip but not too crazy. Plus, the first cut grew out beautifully, so I have that to look forward to. It's the best cut I've had in NYC in years. Deirdre is pleasant and professional. She really listens to what I want, but improves on it: my hair came out better than I expected. The price is totally reasonable--$68 for my medium-length, straight hair, and free bangs touch-ups in between appointments. People of Park Slope, do not be intimidated by the hip styles and badass tats of the Badlands staff! They are cool and talented, but not pretentious. Get your hair cut here. read more

I've been seeing her for a few years and I have very curly hair - she cuts better than Diva and Ouidad and without the astronomical price. I've now been to Alexis @badlands four times and it's safe to say I will be going back to her for many more visits. I wish I had a before and after, where a couple months ago I walked in looking like a calico cat from the devastation of not having been able to find a good hairdresser between my last good one (moved away unfortunately) and her. She calmly explained the process that will make my hair look best and I'm so glad I found her. I get a cut, color and balayage (for an ombré) and always walk out a happy camper. But why read when you can just see a picture? Speaks for itself. That the atmosphere in the salon is super laid back and hip doesn't hurt either.. They just raised their prices which is a little disappointing, but either way, I can't even tell you how much I loved my first two haircuts at Badlands. Katie is a stellar stylist and she's so sweet. She listens to you - if you say you don't want to cut too much, she won't cut too much. If you think your ends are horrible but you still only want to do an inch, Katie only cuts an inch. I have longer hair and feel paralyzed whenever I get a cut. Katie worked wonders on my layers and gave me exactly what I was looking for. I've come in and seen clients of hers leave the chair - I really believe she can do it all. Katie is one of the younger stylists and I really love chatting with her. Also, they serve beer, so if you're in for the long haul with a colorist, get your booze on. Highly recommended. If you're going to pay $70 for a cut in NYC, just skip the train and stay in the neighborhood. read more

Kasandra is a five-star stylist, and has given me basically my favorite haircut and dye job ever. If faced with a questionnaire where I could list hobbies, I would be sorely tempted to list my hair because I enjoy looking at it and am going in far more frequently than I had at other salons just because I want to maintain it perfectly. Indeed, my interactions with everyone at the salon have been great; whenever I've needed to wait at all they've kept me sipping tea and reading contentedly. The only reason I omitted a star is just something other patrons may want to know about, though it doesn't affect my loyalty at all. The space is small and set up such that the cutting spaces are very close to the street. This has perks -- I've been there when clients from the neighborhood have stopped in and said hello, which gives the place a cozy, Mr. Rogers feel, but it does mean that getting your haircut doesn't feel like an escape or a spa treatment. I'm going back next week and already looking forward to having my hair restored to the perfection of five weeks ago! read more

I meant to write this hours ago, but I can't stop playing with my hair since I had it colored by Paula tonight! I decided yesterday to go from a medium natural brunette to an all-over blonde, and Paula got me there with the utmost attention and professionalism. You can tell from the minute you sit in her chair that she knows exactly what she's doing when it comes to color. We did a double process, and she took me through every step, making sure my scalp wasn't burning, that I was liking how things were looking, and that I knew what she was planning on doing before she did it. Luckily, my hair lightened up to a great color in one trip to the salon, but Paula repeatedly told me that the integrity and health of my hair was priority numero uno. It's reassuring to know she won't do something incorrectly just for the instant gratification factor, but makes sure to do color properly and thoroughly. Besides her coloring skills, she gave a great cut and styled it exactly how I wanted it, AND she was sweet as pie. (I was kept in cold PBRs throughout my four hours at Badlands. My friend also stopped by to wait for me, and Paula even gave her a beer, too.) I couldn't be happier to have found such a great salon down the street from me, and will absolutely be recommending Paula to all of my friends. read more

Solid haircuts in Park Slope. I've had my hair cut twice by Katie, and she is very friendly and professional. I used to go to High Horse in Williamsburg, and started going to Badlands since moving to Park Slope. The prices are comparable ($65 for a haircut, free bang trims). Unfortunately, they are cash only now (used to accept credit cards). biggest downside: the receptionist is really rude. I've called several times for appts. and she is always very unpleasant to deal with on the phone. almost bad enough to want to take my business elsewhere. read more

Chelsea is all the woman you need, and possibly more. Seriously--I am thrilled with this hairdresser. She is not only skilled and intuitive, but has a great "bedside" manner. She's friendly and warm and actually listens when you tell her what kind of look you want. Look, I'll have you know that in some parts of Park Slope I am known as Rocker Chick, NO LIE. I was devastated when Corrine left her last salon - I had no idea where I would find another stylist as talented and warm and she is. A few weeks later, I was so happy to discover that she had moved to Badlands. A friend and I both swear by Corrine and won't trust anyone else with our hair. Her cuts grow in perfectly, which is great for me because I wear my hair short but not the best at keeping up with regular trips to the salon. My friend has also gone to Corrine for color and is always thrilled with the results. Corrine listens to what you want and then takes it from there to give you a great haircut. read more

This barber shop/Salon is well on it's way to being the quintessential spot in Park Slope for men who are looking for the "New" barber specializing in the high and tight, fade or blend as it is also known to be called. I met with Rubi a cute stylist with a cool style and warm vibe. She was fun to talk, joke with and really listed to what I wanted from my cut. She admitted she hadn't done many fades as she is known as the cut and color specialist there but was learning the barbering techniques. She mentioned that they give FREE hair cuts on Wednesdays for barber training class....get 'em while they last as I'm sure that won't carry on forever. I would recommend Badlands to anyone!
