Great service good beers and local guest taps. I'd come back to get some food and sit a bit to enjoy the brew and food

For the children theres the animal farm where they can see and pet the animals, and tractor rides around the entire farm, including fascinating tours to show how cider is made including a cider museum and distillery, even a jam kitchen! And for the adults, if the above doesn't interest you enough, there is of course the farm shop which sells over 40 varieties of delicious fruit products, including a wide range of ciders produced at the farm, brandy, fresh jams and fresh pressed apple juice! And if you like to stock up on cider, you'll be doing your wallet a favour too as you can get great deals such as 20 bottles of Cornish Rattler for £19.99! A great save considering they sell single bottles in supermarkets for £2.50+ each! And if like me you have no idea where to start in the farm shop, they have free taste testing stalls, allowing you to taste all of the best selling ciders and wines the farm produces just make sure you don't get too carried away! I would recommend drivers to be limited to only 1 or 2 drinks to taste as some are rather high in alcohol. And of course, if you need a break from all of that, there's a lovely restaurant and cream tea café just next door to the farm shop.

You can take a tour of the miniature farm, as well as a ride around the fields where you can learn a little bit about the history of cider making. My particular favourite was getting to sample all the different kinds of alcohol and jam that they make (for free!) and I ended up spending quite a lot in the shop on the jam, which I became quite addicted to, and the strawberry wine which made a great present in it's beautiful glass bottle. Definitely worth a visit if you're heading to/from Newquay.

The lady serving is polite and helpful. It's a small shop/tasting room downstairs that doesn't hold many people and we didn't venture upstairs, nor did we try any of the five or so beers offered on draught during our visit. The server offered to let me taste some but if I'm drinking I'm not driving, period. They were also selling food but it was prepared offsite and once a food order is placed a runner sets off to obtain and return with food. They also have a restroom for customers use. One chap ordered a crab sandwich, as I stood by the counter, and it was priced around £17. I would refuse to pay £17 for a crab sandwich but then Rick Stein is charging £18 for a cod & chip in a cardboard box and chef Paul Ainsworth wants £160 a head for dinner in this town. So we bought three 8.8 pint barrels at about £95 and off we went beer in hand.

The brewers are really friendly and helpful, as well as being highly skilled and imaginative. Their products are just excellent, with a wide range of modern, hoppy, carbonated beers, available in cans and--often--mini-kegs. Our favorites included the lightly fruity and cloudy Florence IPA, and their smoky Rauchbier-style dark; but unlike most breweries there were no dogs: everything we tasted was just great. Padstow Brewery also produces more challenging bottle-conditioned traditional English beers and ales, which are really lovely and come only in bottles.

The layout of the pub clearly indicates an emphasis on food rather than booze, but upon my visit I found the menu rather disappointingly small and conventional. Because of the location and atmosphere it is busy with families and groups of (mostly) younger people. The "restaurant pitch" is further reinforced by the generous layout of the bars for drinks and food. The range of ales is, again, dominated by St. Austell Brewery, and they're kept nice and fresh. But the highlight of The Fort Inn is its spacious outside seating to the back, from which you get a splendid view of Towan Beach (and the Great Western Beach in the background). Unfortunately the furnishings could be more comfortable - it is a strain to sit at those big, raw tables the way they're constructed - you simply cannot stretch out your legs. I've seen these kinds of benches at other pubs, too - maybe it's their way of telling you not to linger. Atmosphere is friendly, clean, "open".
