This was a bit of a tricky one to figure out how to review. There are few places that one can…read moreactually physically purchase Curio Spirits because they're a relatively new company. I came across Curio initially when I was given a bottle of their gin by my in-laws for Christmas. Glossing over how this makes me feel a bit of an alcoholic, I was interested because their gin is not your typical "London Dry" but rather "Rock Samphire." Eager to try it (again... not doing so well on the alcoholism front) I made myself my go-to cocktail of choice, a gin and tonic. I won't say I was blown off my feet immediately, I didn't fall into a cartoon like trance with images of juniper berries and samphire dancing around my head; rather, everything about this gin was subtle and... dare I say it, artisanal. There's a slight saltiness to their gin and before you get turned away by that description it's not like drinking the sea, more subtle and fleeting than that. It's a difference that is noticeable but pleasant, like the smell of the salt on the ocean wind. I was sold, pretty much immediately. It wasn't until by chance when my husband and I took a trip to Helston for a short holiday did I have a good stroke of luck of coming across their stand at the Helston Farmers' Market held monthly at The Old Cattle Market. I hastily purchased a bottle for my sister, also a gin drinker and asked about their other ventures. I found that, in fact, Curio is a very VERY VERY small company. After chatting to the people who were at the stall, I found they were actually the owners and distillers of Curio Spirits. A husband and wife, the two began their journey - perhaps amusingly - trying to distill for fun and after making hundreds of mistakes they realized they were pretty good at this stuff. I was shocked to find they had only being doing this for a year. However like their gin, their appearance on the spirits scene has been subtle and understated but it's what made me fall in love with what they're doing even more. It had heart and soul to it - I chatting with these two people and they responded earnestly and passionately about their drinks. I sampled a few of their other products, i.e. cardamom vodka and cocoa nib vodka, perhaps a bit too early in the morning but was again struck by the subtleties in the flavors. They weren't overbearing like the flavored vodkas I had drunk in my wild youth but they were refined, smooth, and clean without drowning out the taste of vodka. Even though I'm not a vodka drinker, I could happily drink it neat. Ultimately, I had to admit to myself I fell in love with the distillers journey as much as I did with their product. I think the two often go hand in hand. I can't help but root for their success because you can see their passion for their spirits in their nervousness as they wring their hands when you try a sample, you can hear the edges of genuine curiosity when they ask "How do you like it?" It's warming to see such love for their craft. Unfortunately, currently the only way to purchase their product in London is online through their website where they have a list of places that sell their bottles: http://www.curiospiritscompany.co.uk/11216-2/ And as it is, as I have said many times, their prices are higher than Gordon's but you pay for exactly what you get. I have no qualms in recommending a bottle, as a unique gift or just for yourself. It's definitely worth the money and I can't think of it going to support better people.
