This place did not smell vintage so they must clean their pieces well. The pieces also seemed in pristtine condition for things that old (I was trying on items from the 70's.) The prices seemed a bit much ($60 for a dress from the 70s in pristine condition) but I'm no expert on vintage. There were accessories too and mens in the basement. The employees were friendly but by not means stylists (which I would have loved!) Meanwhile, I got a unique dress to wear to a concert from a band from the 70's (and looked like a cute dress while out and about in regular sandals) but my plan is to get some white go go boots and other mod accessories and jazzz it up for Halloween. Great selection and quality. I've bought and sold to them and both went great. The staff is very knowledgeable and very friendly and helpful. When I brought in items that it turned out ther were not interested it. They still geve my some useful info and suggested others who may be interested. When I was buying they made some great suggestions, but no "hard sell" and were, as usual, very helpful. I highly recommend them if selling or buying. Nice selection of garments and collectibles however the staff were snobby and unprofessional. There were two people behind the cashier's area when I walked in talking about their personal lives therefore I was not met with any kind of a greeting, which was disturbing and awkward as I was the only customer in the store at that time. One of the young women that worked there even walked by me and made eye contact and still did not speak to me. At one point I had to come back and disturb them in order to ask if I could have a dressing room to try on some boots, jeans, a few t-shirts, and a leather jacket. What's funny to me is that I spent over $250 in there and the staff seemed shocked. After the transaction they were suddenly somewhat nicer maybe even embarrassed by their showing. Living in New York and coming to visit a very small town like Royal Oak, I was expecting perhaps some good old fashioned hospitality that the Midwest is known for. Instead I received a level of disrespect that not even the snobbiest of shops in Manhattan or Williamsburg would throw at an individual. A great little gem located in the Royal Oak area. I think it's the perfect fit for Royal Oak. This vintage shop is a little different from the others that I remember seeing. First off: they are fairly priced. You can walk out with some really great pieces like a couple of bracelets, dresses, sweater and a jacket for under $100 if you want. It's not your typical over priced vintage shop that jacks up all of the prices for who knows why. I mean, you will definitely find some things that are steeply priced. Second: their jewelry selection is amazing! And all of it is unique. They sell local pieces and I believe the owner even makes some pieces and sells them if I'm not mistaken. Third: the employees are actually friendly and talk to you. And they keep this place very organzied! Royal Oak is lucky to have Lost & Found as one of it's many eclectic stores. L&F may be the best vintage clothing store I've ever been in. Located on Washington Street, Lost & Found is actually pretty easy to find. I've been here many times with friend and yelper Jeffrey B. First, the vintage clothes are all nice and in good condition. Tommy, the owner, and the other employees do a really good job with buying. They only have interesting, true vintage pieces that are hard to find somewhere else. This isn't the local resale shop who thinks 2001 is vintage. You can find dresses from the '20s, suits from the '70s, coats from the '60s and t-shirts from '80s. The selection is large and is always changing. Second, this place isn't the biggest store ever, but it's not over crowded. The clothing is laid out and organized in a logical, helpful way. It's easy to browse the clothes and find exactly what you're looking for. The upstairs is women, the downstairs is men and the front is accessories. Third, (I think this is what separates L&F from others) the staff here is amazing. All of the women who work here are friendly and professional. From the instant you talk to them you can tell they love their job and they know what they're talking about. All of them love vintage clothing and they want to make sure you walk out of the store with some great new vintage clothes. I have friends that shop second hand all the time. And I always admire the items they find. Myself, on the other hand, have tried vintage shopping many times and have always walked away frustrated and empty handed. It is too overwhelming for me. When I shop, I want the garment to jump out at me and scream "Buy me!!". I just don't have the patience to sift through racks after racks. And as a result, I completely avoid second hand stores. While hanging out the other day in Royal Oak, I decided to stop into Lost and Found Vintage and give vintage shopping another chance. Lost and Found Vintage is Michigan's premier vintage clothing store. It's also the go-to vintage spot for traveling celebrities, bands, film crews and fashion designers seeking inspiration. I browsed through some of the racks and found a really cute jumper but I was too lazy to try it on. I think I went through 2 racks and was already tired of browsing. I put the jumper back and started walking to the front door when Amanda, the sales person, asked if I wanted to try on anything. I am going to a wedding in Scotland this summer and I am looking for a navy dress to wear. Like most vintage stores, a lot of the pieces are for smaller, even more petite women and I found a sequined dress in blue that would've been killer, if I could have only comfortably fit it through the torso. Anyways, nonetheless, I found a vintage hand-hooked rug with the most beautiful floral theme. I also found a pair of emerald green, leather booties that were made in Italy. And, furthermore, I found a vintage pair of oxfords in my size. I bought three pieces that day. I struck vintage gold for sure that day. I have also bought a vintage turquoise and silver ring that I adore from them, as well as a vintage Army jacket that everyone talks about when I wear it. The prices are better than vintage in most other cities. Not quite as cheap as rural places, but not as expensive as Austin, TX or New Orleans, LA. It's the closest vintage store to my house to boot! It wasn't THAT long ago that Royal Oak had several great vintage clothing stores, but sadly this is the only one remaining from that heyday. I think Lost and Found is an exceptionally well merchandised store and I'm glad it's still around, but nowadays they mostly cater towards 70s/80s style as I'm sure that's what sells best for them. It's a great store for 70s tees and jeans, but I collect 20s, 30s, 40s, and those pieces in the store (all 8 of them, the same 8 that have been there all year) are untouchable because they're displayed high on the walls. Obviously, I'm not going to ask an employee to take down all of those dresses so I can inspect the condition, price, size, etc. If you're that worried, put them on a rack near the counter with a sign that says "fragile"! The other bummer is they have a really low turnover rate for everything but their tees, which I suspect is related to their higher prices. read more

I didn't think I would be allowed into Lost and Found, because I am not hip or cool or any other such adjective. I did make it inside, and I was very impressed. First of all, there was 70s mood music playing in the background, which made me feel like I was in a Boogie Nights sort of movie...well almost. I found a really nice tie I ended up wearing to a party that very night. And also a blazer which fit like a glove, a very old glove. The prices were quite decent. It's not dirt cheap, but it leaves you with enough dough in your wallet to go out and show off your snazzy 60's digs. I wish I knew what the secret of Lost and Found Vintage is. Or vintage shopping in general, to be honest. I need the cast of Portlandia and Zooey Deschanel to gently take me by the arm, my vintage fairy oddball-mothers, and whisk me through the aisles on an instructive journey that leaves me the belle of the everyday ball. Maybe that's the problem: I need clothes to wear on a regular basis instead of 'sometimes outfits' made of tufted chenille, satin, and a crinoline. I don't find many pieces here that work into my everyday wardrobe, either for work or for play. The other strike against me are my proportions, too tall for most eras and built on a curvier frame than earlier periods accommodated. I have more luck with modern takes on vintage, like the Stop Staring brand, than actual brands from the day. I'll defy this for any Christian Dior or YSL dress from the day though. Lost and Found is a whirlwind of pale colours, cowboy boots, and cute twin-sets superimposed over whimsical designs and happy, slender people in adorable dresses. Size 0-8 functions great in here, though I think it helps to be slim hipped and modest in proportion for most dresses. It's definitely a stop for a cocktail dress or a special occasion outfit, since many of the frothy concoctions beg for a fresh night on the town. I found one too many items straight from the 70s which resemble and probably are nightgowns (they were interchangeable), but that's preferential taste. Clothes are clean, elegant, and will definitely put a dent in your wallet for the privilege of something very few others will possess in their closet. They aren't unreasonable, but the vintage market can be so topsy turvy for costs. I was disappointed most of the shoes seemed to be in sizes 6-7.5, hardly anything larger than a 9, but maybe they get snapped up super quick. The boot selection is impressively wide. Accessories are a dime a dozen, adorable, and a major selling point. They have something at most price points, though serious damage happens for complete outfits. What appeals most are the abundance of colours and textures like nothing in TJ Maxx, the mall, or typical apparel stores. Shirts, skirts, dresses, and pants are represented in abundance, most with a definite feminine slant. My extra star here comes from their gorgeous collection of well-priced accessories. Come in for the vintage clothes, stay for the jewelry. Cocktail rings, fanciful necklaces, and charming pins are all sumptuously displayed, and definitely catch my eye every time I come in. read more

There is A LOT of polyester here! No joke! Definitely a bona fide retro store in that aspect. I personally would love to see more cotton or fabrics that don't make me smell like an acrid slab of meat at the end of the day but that's just me. That aside, there are some good finds here! Aaaand they're not horrifically overpriced like most 'vintage stores.' Women's wear on the top floor, men's on the bottom. Dressing rooms are on the bottom as well. No bathroom inside (but you can go across the street to Five15 - free wifi there, too). On the women's floor there are mostly dresses in ALL sizes - also some skirts and two-piece suits, sweaters and shirts. What I like most is that the sections are divided into type of garb and COLOR, not size. This really helps me since I am the queen of black and grey. Narrows down my choices. Besides, sizes vary too much to rely on numbers anyway. There are also some fur coats on the second floor - if you're going to buy fur, for goodness sake buy it used! Keep the garment alive and wear it for all its worth. That's my take on it, anyway. Then at least you're not supporting the industry. But what I really love? The great collection of women's '40s and '60s styled hats - their selection ebbs and flows but I find this to be the most impressive part of the store. On the entry-level floor there is a sizable selection of vintage-y belt buckles, jewelry, postcards, and the like. Fun to poke around in and particularly good for gifts. The men's floor has so much flannel you'll think you walked into a lumber jack outfitters! Also has lots of t-shirts. And a whole room dedicated to military garb with some seriously nice coats. From what I noticed, mostly larger sizes here - not much heroin-chic. The women working here are remarkably outgoing and friendly, especially considering that this is a vintage shop (a genre of stores infamous for fashionista clerks who just don't give a damn about much of anything except proving their superiority). The friendly staff might also account for the cross-section of shoppers. From the elderly, to middle-aged, to young bloods - from hipsters to Americana - lots of people browse about. And if you finish browsing before your company does, there is a comfy bench (and I think sofa on the other side?) where you can rest your weary butt. Er, head. Feet. And back. Overall not a lot of clothing in my style - more '70s hippy inspired or scrunch-wasted summer dresses (hence I would rate it three stars). But any time I'm in the area I have to pop in and rummage. Lost and Found definitely has a pretty good selection as far as vintage stores go, and it's less overwhelming than Mother Fletcher's in Ferndale. However, the prices are sometimes a lot to handle. Their t-shirts usually run at about $20, which is a lot when something at the Salvation Army is $3 and there's no difference in quality. (After all, it's just a t-shirt; can we call a spade a spade?) I definitely enjoy shopping here and looking around, but more often than not, I talk myself out of something because it's just a little more than I think I should be paying for it. (Of course, this is a dilemma with almost any secondhand store, which is why this gets four stars. This issue is by no means unique.) read more

love this place! they have a much bigger selection than it looks like at first glance. the clothes here cover a really wide range of styles and i love that each tag has the decade it's from on it. the prices are really reasonable - i got a beautiful shirtdress for twenty-four dollars (because they were having a sale with a percentage off a certain color tag) and a a pair of awesome pants for sixteen (regular price). these are deals people! also, i like that not everything is really costume-ish. you can get some weird stuff here, but mostly i found it to be all very wearable and stylish. everyone who works here is really nice and friendly and helpful. they also have a really big men's section but i didn't really get a chance to scope it out. there are a bunch of stores on this street really close to each other and i visited all of them, and none of them have as good of a selection or prices. i'm counting down the days until i can come back! read more

The state of MI as the backdrop and a fish in the foreground with a hook in it's mouth and the saying "Catch Our Allure." Get it? A - lure? Get it? Alright slightly lame but I did think it was funny enough to buy for my girlfriend for one of those "thanks for sticking around" gifts and she seemed to enjoy it... although she didn't think it was near as funny as I did. This store pretty much rules. The clothes are slightly off kilter from your standard vintage store and the belt, boot and hat selections are killer! I need to go back when I've got some time to try some stuff on... there are a lot of really cool spring or fall jackets here and even a couple of really awesome winter ones. One girl, Amanda, spent a half hour with me, picking out things that looked like they would fit well with my personal preferences and body type. This is probably by far the best vintage boutique I have been to in the metro detroit area. It is located in downtown Royal Oak and there is usually street parking. My sister who is really into vintage clothing have gotten several unique dresses, skirts, and jewelry. Luckily my mom is a seamstress so she is able to tailor all our clothing to perfection. I have gotten 4 jewelry pieces and each time I wear it, I always get compliments! That's the thing: the clothing is not organized by size, but most vintage stores aren't. You will need plenty of time to browse and make trips to the dressing room. If that doesn't bother you, then you will love it! The ladies who own/work here are super nice and don't bother you if you want to be left alone, which is important in my opinion. I hate being rushed when I'm shopping! But if your heart belongs to the 40's and 50's like mine does, you are in luck. Not only does L&F carry a hearty stock of these gems (dresses, suits, shirts, skirts, shoes, accessories, etc.) but they are all priced MARVELOUSLY. I have to HEARTILY DISAGREE with any of the posts beneath mine who say this store is "too expensive". Have you ever shopped for vintage before from a VINTAGE store? There is a big difference between VINTAGE and THRIFT stores my friends; the amount of time and energy it takes to maintain a true vintage shop, find the pieces (via open markets, estate sales, or trips around the country in the style of American Pickers), clean the pieces, and finally put them out for sale--THAT is why it takes work and yes, these pieces aren't thrift store cheap, but that is because of Q.U.A.L.I.T.Y! The only thing that competes with the awesomeness of the prices are the amazing managers and full-time staff of the store. Oooh, how on Earth is it possible I'd never been here before Thursday? I really have no idea (well, it probably hasn't been there very long, and I no longer live in MI, so I haven't spent tons of time there in a few years), but man, I'm glad I went in. I love vintage dresses, and have lately been on a quest for a new one. I haven't worn a vintage dress in years, but only because I live nowhere near any vintage stores in Chicago (not that they don't have them, they're just out of range for me). So I was excited to walk by the other day, and I knew I had to go in. Everything is so reasonably priced, unlike many other vintage shops. That's a big plus to someone on a budget like me. The staff was friendly when we interacted, but the two that were there were more interested in chatting with each other and fooling around. Honestly, when you've been working ALL day and it's an hour and a half before closing, is totally understandable and I had no problem with it-they were there when I needed help. I'm pretty sure they were both sleep deprived, they were so goofy. Anyway. I didn't find anything that worked for me that day. See, back in the 50s-70s, most women didn't have the bust size I do unless they were large everywhere (I take a small), so the dresses that I tried on fit until I got to the top, and then they wouldn't zip. Oh well. So I went home disappointed. There was actually a really pretty pale yellow dress that was too small on top that I kept thinking about. I figured I could re-purpose (read: Have my Momma do it, because I have no skillz) it into a skirt and figure out something else to do with the extra fabric (it hit me halfway down my calves). So on Friday, I grabbed my backpack and umbrella and headed out. I had much better luck on Friday. Yay! I found a great peach colored summer dress for $28, and a cute brown & blue floral print fall dress for $24. On my way to check out, I stopped at a table with several clutches, and I spotted one that was a few shades deeper than the peach dress for $18. Score! It goes perfectly with my new dress. Annoyingly, somewhere along the way, the tie for the peach dress got lost, so I'll have to find something for it because it's just a little bit too big. I wore it today to the flower shop and got lots of compliments. Even more exciting is the fact that I discovered the peach dress has pockets! I love pockets in dresses, they're so much fun. I'm actually sitting here writing my review on the couch in it. I love this store. It's organized really well-I love that the clothes are fairly well organized by color. It's actually pretty impressive considering how many clothes they have. I did not purchase the yellow dress because it was just too long and too big to turn into a skirt. Would've needed taking in and a lot of work. Probably wouldn't have been worth the money. Oh well. Saturday had two very helpful and nice ladies working. THIS IS THE BEST VINTAGE SHOP OF ALL TIME!! everything here is reasonably priced. they are all vintage enough to be legit vintage. i got a lace top for 5 bucks. salvatore ferragamo shoes for 18. their vintage tees can get pricey. each shirt runs about 10-15 dollars. all their shoes are from size 6-8 mostly. too bad i had to squeeze in mine. but all the shoes they have are really cute. the staff definitely have the eye for good stuff. if you are into that 40's 50s 60s retro look definitely look into here. they have some legit coats, hats and dresses from those decades. read more

Wow! I think I've died and gone to vintage heaven! As a girl who lived and died for great vintage finds while living in NYC and SF, this place was a crazy wonderful find! Amazing selection of scarves and dresses. Prices are super low for the quality that is offered as well. Yes, it is higher than the local Sal's boutique (Salvation Army for those not in the "know") but the owner has an obviously good eye. Largest selection of "Vera" scarves I've ever seen - all around the $12-$18 price range. Ladies: If it's a dress you are looking for - then this is the place for some unique 60's, 70's or 80's finds. Me personally, I love the 50's esthetic and was blessed to find a gorgeous cotton black 50's flair dress that fit me like a glove. Men: Amazing "western" shirt selection and vintage t-shirts. Also great Wranglers at prices that are half of what I've ever seen elsewhere. Super nice and helpful staff as well. I must admit, I felt a little out of place at first when I walked into Lost and Found. A friend had introduced me to it and I just went along for the ride. I wouldn't consider myself a 'hipster' or into vintage, but I can go with anything. Once I went in, I found tons of really nice vintage stuff that even someone with pretty basic fashion tastes such as myself can enjoy. I have gone back many times, and the help is really wonderful! I sat and chatted with Amanda for almost an hour, and Yvonne is also great! It doesn't matter how you dress Lost and Found has something for you. read more

This place is an institution. I've been thru vintage shops all across the country and since returning to the area, Lost and Found still holds up at the top. Prices are so reasonable and the stock is always fresh and cool. I've bought pieces here YEARS ago that remain beloved in my closet. read more

Awww shucks, yesterday was one of those days! Y'know, where everything makes you wanna sing James Brown! Me and my new gal went to brunch, walked her dog, and then ended up at Lost and Found Vintage...well, she had it on her radar haha! You walk in and the gals have some smooth music playing...on vinyl no less--thank you! They have some neat displays old skool belt buckles, books, art, antique stuff and jewelry up front and smartly laid out...more on that in a minute. Upstairs for the gals are a lot great vintage finds! I have a friend on the West Coast who outfits the vintage fashion show at Tiki Oasis every year and I'm guessing even she would be impressed! Downstairs area is for the fellas. Saw some neat shirts, but no impulse buys...for me. While my gal was looking/trying on a few dresses (she found a couple she absolutely loved--a Lacoste and Diane Somethin-Somethin made in Italy--great deals too!), I spied with my lil' eye a neat decorative bracelet with turquoise stones on it and the price was very right. Uh-huh, the lovely lady loves turquoise, so I asked one of the gals, "Can you please ring this up for me--quick?" She was ninja like. Both gals working yesterday were very friendly and helpful. Also worth noting, they even accommodated a family walking, well holding, their dog that wanted to look around. I was debating whether or not to surprise her with the bracelet on an upcoming weekend trip, but ended up surprising her at dinner with said bracelet and of course she loved it! I had the best experience with this team! I had to costume 6 girls for a sock hop scene in a High School play. I was there over the course of 4 days and at every interaction, we were treated so well. A special prop to Lauren who never gave up in finding each high school girl the perfect dress for the show. They were all very careful to mention their policies on final sales and worked with me day over day to make sure the fit and dresses were 100% the right fit for each person. This is my new favorite vintage shop in the United States. The women's section is organized by color, along with a few center racks to highlight extra-awesome seasonal offerings. I didn't even make it to check out the men's section because I was overwhelmed by the fabulously priced hats and shoes (mint condition Ferragamos for $24? Yes, please!) and didn't make it downstairs. Five drawers full of gloves, old unused greeting cards, well-priced crinolines, and plenty of other neat accessories. The displays are thoughtfully set up (YES, you do need those lavender pumps to go with your Easter outfit). I loved how the shop was laid out -- although I was dazzled by everything I saw, I was still able to navigate my way through the store. I spoke with the cashier about their small-ish Etsy shop, and she said they had definite plans to expand their online offerings. Excellent news! read more
