Another Eat the World LA Find…read more La Casita Mexicana -- another Eat the World LA find that did not disappoint! I first visited while I was in the area with my best friend, who is also half Argentinian like me and does modeling as a hobby. She had just finished another successful photoshoot on the Eastside of Los Angeles, made great connections, and got some amazing content. It was getting late, and we wanted to start heading back home toward the freeway, but we were starving. We both love food and get the munchies now and then, but we also wanted to celebrate her latest milestone, so I suggested La Casita Mexicana. The ambiance was like stepping into a little casita in Mexico -- bright, colorful, vibrant, and welcoming. The staff were friendly, too. We tried an appetizer and shared the Enchiladas Tres Moles. Granted, I've never had truly authentic mole, but I've had versions of mole that were not good. The mole here, however, was out of this world delicious. Even the mole that came with the dinner chips as their "salsa mole" was fantastic. I remember thinking, I feel like I'm experiencing Michelin-star-level food in the middle of the LA barrio. And honestly, that's the beauty of the barrio. There are culinary diamonds all over Los Angeles -- you just have to give them a chance and be willing to try somewhere new. I've since returned with my boyfriend, and the food has never disappointed. For a little personal context, I'm half Argentinian and half Mexican. Although the Mexican side of my family is from Guadalajara and Sonora, I didn't grow up eating Jalisco-style cuisine, so exploring different regional Mexican cooking has been especially fun for me. It's always interesting discovering flavors and traditions that are part of my own heritage but weren't necessarily part of my upbringing. La Casita Mexicana is definitely one of those places I'm glad I ventured out for -- and another successful Eat the World LA discovery.

I got the…read moreTres Carnes plate, which comes with carne asada, cecina, and chorizo, so you basically get a little bit of everything on one plate. The chorizo was a bit too salty for my taste, but the cecina more than made up for it and honestly was my favorite of the three. The carne asada was solid too, cooked just right and full of flavor. Before the food even came out, they brought us chips with mole, and those were perfect on their own, a worthy palette opener while we waited! Service was great the entire meal, our server checked in often without hovering and made the whole experience feel special. For a birthday dinner with the family, it was just right.

Each time I felt like I was a family friend coming in for a meal from the kindest people. On my first trip, I got a couple of tacos and a gordita. Seriously the food was so delicious. The meats were well seasoned and cooked really well. On my second trip, even though it was hot outside, I got some pozole. So glad I did. Wonderful flavors and Mexican comfort food at its best. I wish there were more places like this, but these are the type of places that have been around for decades, and most likely are closing for one reason or another. The parking lot is tricky though. It's pretty tiny and the lines were drawn not thinking that cars could get trapped inside so watch out for the corners.

My favorite appetizer are the Molletes which are toasted bolillos with chorizo and bean spread topped with cheese and pico de gallo. My favorite plates are the Carne en su Jugo, which is pork in green chilli sauce, and the Albondigas beef meatball soup. The soup is plentiful and doesn't disappoint in flavor. The meatballs are tender and have a perfect flavor profile of herbs and spice. Honestly, nothing disappoints here. The Pollo in Mole is also delicious. The tortillas are fresh and hand made. The Pollo con Rajas is creamy, cheesy, flavorful and the chicken has always been juicy underneath all that sauce, cooked perfectly. I've also had the teak tacos and they're filling, tasty, and a perfectly compliment to anything you will order. The sides are usually rice and beans and they've always been perfect. The rice is soft and the beans are addicting. Javier is always warm and friendly, he does an amazing job with his restaurant. He tends to his patrons wonderfully and deserves all praise, as well as his staff. They compliment the small dining area and make you feel like you're eating at home or with family. I'll gladly continue to eat at Rajas con Crema every time I'm in town. Parking is street parking so it can be iffy. Thank you so much for the fantastic experience!

Service is attentive, the food has its charm with in-house made tortillas. It really was a hard review to write because all the elements of a great restaurant is embodied in this hidden gem. I chalk it up to ordering the wrong items. The flavors did not pop for me. Hubby opted for the chorizo and he said it was decent and he described it as "diet chorizo"--that he'd probably needed to go back to Sinaloa to capture the true essence of "real" chorizo, the way it's meant to be. The star of his meal was the in-house made flour tortillas-now that's authentic! This is/was the reason that it leaned towards a 4 star. These looked and tasted phenomenal. The aroma took me back to the times when we visited Rosarito's Puerto Nuevo, as the lady made the tortillas by hand & pressed them in the comal, ahh, good times. I ordered the vegetarian omelette with beans & potatoes. The omelette was decent with fresh bell peppers & onions but the seasoning was so mild that I requested for salt & pepper. The potatoes appeared well seasoned in color but lacked that oomph that salt & pepper couldn't fix. My apple pancakes were average. While I appreciated the strawberry compote, there was no apple or apple taste in them. To wash everything down, I had cafe de olla, that was good. The aroma of the brown sugar & cinnamon was ever present. Estrella, our server was very welcoming, attentive and friendly, she gets 5 stars for her service with a smile & hospitality. Their lunch & dinner menu looked very appealing but we wanted breakfast items. We wish we were both molé enthusiasts then perhaps we would've better appreciated & enjoyed those offerings. Both indoor & outdoor seating (front & rear), parking is free & shared with their liquor store at this corner small plaza. Beware, no restrooms available. I'm glad we gave this little shop a try.
