    Caldo de pollo
    Wendy C.

First time here. I got the shredded chicken chimichangas with rice. I normally don't get shredded chicken in anything because it's dry but this was not at all. It's was very juice and flavorful. Excellent dish. My husband got the caldo de pollo and he said it was really good. The bowl it comes in is 2 sizes too small because it was spilling everywhere. Now for service... terrible and that's why I gave 4 stars. Took a bit for anyone to take our drink order and the waitress was just slow and not attentive. we should have spent half the time here but we kept having to wait for her. We'll be back.

    Rock in my food!

Food is good but I got a rock in my big burrito and it chipped my tooth bad. The offered to make me a new burrito and they did and when they brought it out only had one piece of shrimp compared to the original that I opened to see if it had more rocks. There was 5/6 in there.

When I go to Los Jalapenos I like to watch sports on the big flat screens. Baseball, football, soccer. Doesn't matter to me. The waiters are big soccer fans, of course. They don't get into American football so much, but they've got so many TVs they don't worry about it. I order a steak fajita salad and I drink lots of iced tea. Also I get a side of jalapenos with it, or one of those other Mexican dishes that mixes avocados and jalapeno and cilantro or something, I forget the name of it. Los Jalapenos seems like a franchise but it is not, I'm told.. They also serve cold beer and margaritas, which is a small miracle in Unicoi County, in case you aren't aware of our local history. They are near the Super Wal-Mart next to I-26 in Unicoi, south of Johnson City about 15 miles. I like the place. Glad they're there. And yes, you can practice your Espanol there.

Very polite waitstaff! I've received excellent service!

Food is great! And prices are great! BUT, they are a little stingy with the cheese..but overall, friendly and serve fast.

There is handicapped parking close to the entrance door, so just watch as you are crossing the traffic lane. The host/ hostess counter is directly in front as you enter. We were greeted right away and taken to a booth. One bench cover was torn and the table had an annoying wiggle every time you changed positions. We also noticed the overhead music was slightly too loud. There were several other groups eating and we heard their conversations as they tried to talk over the music. Our server was very friendly and did his job well. He took our drink order and then gave us the right amount of time to make our selections. We received the chips and salsa just before our drinks arrived. The food took no more than 15 minutes after we placed the order to arrive. The salsa was disappointing. It had a strong tomato paste flavor. There were bits of onion and a few pieces of cilantro but neither of those flavors made it through. The carnitas was pretty good. The amount of pork was a bit less than expected but the flavor was good and it was very tender. The rice and refried beans were average at best. The salad was nice, with fresh lettuce, avocado and jalapeno slices, and tomatoes. The chicken and shrimp was also pretty good. The chicken had nice seasoning even without the cheese sauce and the shrimp was cooked perfectly. This dish had the same rice and refried beans. BTW, the accompanying tortillas were hot, so be careful as you unroll them. Other than the excellent service, the best part of this experience was the salsa bar. There were about eight different salsas to chose from. Each had a unique flavor and ranged in consistency from pico to creamy. One pico even included cactus. Any of these salsas were an improvement over the initial salsa and also made a great addition to the main meals. The bottom line for me is this is an average Mexican restaurant with above average service and salsa bar.

I usually go for tortas (carnitas, steak, or al pastor which is seasoned chopped pork) . With everything including pineapple, jalapeños, and extra green sauce. I'm told that the red sauce can be a little hot. I like it, but prefer the flavor of the green sauce. In the summer I love Aguas frescas. Pineapple is my favorite and they make a delicious example here. I got hooked on tortas honestly. Back when the world was a kinder place, a bunch of GIs would go to Ciudad Juarez on weekends. Partly because we weren't old enough to drink on our side of the Rio Grande. Fresh out of the combat zone, I would drink enough to believe that I could dance. There were three fun girls. Kayra, Kenya, and Keira. Blondes. They had their own money, but indulged me to buy the occasional drink or late night meal. They would navigate the back streets to the best places that I'd never be able to find on my own. Always tortas. I think they were trying to sober me up. Turns out that would take another 20+ years. El Lagunero takes me back a few decades in the best kind of way. I'm still in touch with most of the guys that served together then. I hope they enjoy a good torta from time to time.

Since they are angled, you can only get to the ones near the entrance you use. There is a lot more parking behind the building. I didn't notice specific handicapped spaces, but you'll want to park in front if you have mobility issues. We entered through the front door. The foyer is brightly lit and colorful. We were greeted on entering and told we could sit anywhere. There is seating on either side, as well as down several steps to the bar area, which also has booth seating. The tables are closely spaced, so it would be difficult to maneuver if it was crowded but we were the only customers on our side. Initially, the background music was rather loud, so we picked a spot away from speakers. The music was later turned down to a manageable level. Our server came for our drink order right away. FYI, they did not have unsweet tea. He returned with our drinks quickly, but we needed more time to decide what we wanted to order. The menu is a mix of Honduran, Salvadoran, and Mexican. Most items are explained on the menu, but we also had to ask our server about several items. We decided on the Tajadas con Pollo (plantains with chicken), the Baleadas Especialies (sort of a burrito but folded instead of rolled), and an order of pupusas (pork and cheese, jalapeno and cheese, and loroco, a salvadoran flower). The Tajedas con pollo was a full plate of food. The protein was about a 1/3 section of chicken on a bed of plantains. There was also slaw and a nice pico. Although the chicken was a bit dry, the flavor was excellent. The plantains were nicely cooked, and the pico had a solid spicy bite. The Baleadas Especiales comes folded in a large tortilla, although the tortilla has a different consistency than a typical Mexican-style tortilla. It is more robust and takes a knife to cut if you want to eat it that way. Otherwise, just pick it up like a burrito. I selected beef as the protein, and it was excellent. Fillings also included avocado and a scrambled egg. This was more than filling, and very tasty. The pupusas were wonderful as well. The pork and jalapeno fillings were flavorful. The loroco was interesting. It had a veggie taste, but with a more earthy flavor. I would certainly order this again. We also found they have a drive through along the side of the building. There is also an entrance there as well, so if you park in the rear you do not need to come to the front of the building to enter. This restaurant is a great addition to the Johnson City restaurant scene. The flavors are different from the typical Mexican spices. The menu is definitely worth exploring.
