Chips and Salsa
Janet G.

We stopped in for dinner after hiking some at Roan Mountain. It's very festive inside. To the right is a little market. The restaurant is straight ahead and to the left. We were seated to the left against the windows that overlooks a nice green area. The hostesses were very nice. Our server, Joel, came right away and took our drink order, followed by a nice lady who brought chips and salsa. Our server asked if we were interested in some spicy sauces. We said yes and he brought two bottles. One was jalapeño based and he said the other was hard to describe but it was spicier. We tried both and really liked the jalapeño based. I ordered guacamole, which was a huge portion and had just the right amount of onions and diced tomatoes. We ordered carnitas, which came with tortillas (we ordered it with flour but you could get corn instead). It also came with roasted jalapeños and onions, refried beans and rice. It was a HUGE portion. I'm glad we split! Joel was a delight- so very nice and also attentive. The food was DELICIOUS! This will definitely be a place we return to!

Costa Chica chips & salsa are better than the average Mexican place!

Well, I love Mexican food, and this is above average. Everything made fresh. Huge portions that don't leave you wondering where all the toppings are! A little pricey.

Onions and jalapeno peppers, plus an excellent salsa.

Located back a bit from N. Roan, you can enter from the main large parking lot or a side street that opens into the lot. The lot is shared with another business, but there is plenty of parking near the restaurant. There is parking adjacent to the building with two handicapped spaces in front of the entrance with a large walkway to the door. The remaining parking is across a travel lane. Everything is paved so walking is easy. As you enter the foyer, the restaurant entrance is to the right. Once you enter the restaurant, the host station is in front. Seating is a mix of tables and booths. We were greeted as we came in and taken to a booth along the outside of the seating area. The window looked out onto a nicely landscaped area which added a nice touch to the ambiance. The previous restaurant occupying the building was a Chinese buffet, and the booths are definitely from the previous occupant, but everything seemed to be in good condition. In addition, the tables are not crammed together so it is easy to move about. Although we did not walk through, there is also a grocery area to the right as you enter the restaurant. The selection seemed pretty large with dry goods, fresh produce, and refrigerated/ frozen items. We received chips and salsa right before our server brought the menus and took our drink order. The chips were fine and the salsa had a slight chipotle taste. Overall, an above average start to the meal. We needed several minutes to work through the menu. While it had many typical items, there were several which are more unusual. The descriptions of each item in the menu as well as several pictures made deciding difficult. Once we ordered, our food took about 15 minutes to arrive. The carnitas was an excellent choice. The meat was well seasoned and cooked perfectly. It fell apart with a fork. The rice is not typical Mexican restaurant rice. While not exotic, it was different enough to be noticeable and was quite good. The refried beans were typical. The carnitas also came with three tortillas, some sautéed onions and jalapeno peppers, and a nice salsa which had decent heat and great flavor. My dining partner had the pollo asado, several thin pieces of chicken breast cooked in a red sauce. The sauce is almost charred onto the meat. This was another excellent choice. The sauce added a wonderful flavor and the chicken remained moist and tender. Sides were tortillas, rice, and refried beans. Interestingly, they also offer a breakfast menu six days a week. Based on the menu over the grill area, it consists of expected items like breakfast burritos, but also the typical eggs and sausage. I expect I will be trying this part of their menu in the near future. If their breakfast is as good as the rest of the menu, there may not be a reason to ever leave.

Steak Tacos

I went on a Saturday it wasn't packed , going in the doorway it's just a beautiful little entrance and was very cleaned. I walked in and was happily greeted and seated immediately. I ordered the Vegetarian Quesadilla and my friend ordered steak tacos. Our food didn't take long to come out and it was good as in a good 6. It would've been nice to see Vegetarian options but it's only like 3 options. I noticed they had a grocery store as well on the inside which was a tad different from my pov but it wasn't bad ...I just don't have no opinion on it. But I do enjoy the Mexican snacks I was slightly tempted on buying a few. The waitress was very sweet, but I think she should learn to time herself checking on her tables because I almost felt rushed to eat, rushed to order and rushed to leave ( I'm a previous waitress and I always gave enough time in between) Will I go back ? .... No Only because their vegetarian options on the menu doesn't peak my interest for a return visit.

This was delicious! Had a little (no, a lot) of everything!!! Each bite amazing!!

This was such a delightful meal and the people were all so fun! We enjoyed every morsel and the service was wonderful and personable!!! Will return and spread the word! Great place to dine!

Our new favorite. They do the best chile rellenos in JC. Prices are great for the size of plates. Friendly service and outstanding food.

I asked the girl someone that I had saw many times always unfriendly seems to be above everyone to be above work if she could get me a can tell it pissed her off she walked back got me a can never did speak next thing you know she was gone just left me there I finally saw her she went back over and started ringing up groceries never said a word left me standing there like an idiot ask her what the problem was she said I'll get to you when I get to you.. now this is the way priceless is letting employees treat their customers because this has been going on sometime with this girl I wish I had got her name but all I can say she was working self-checkout around 12:00 noon Saturday November 22nd. If you watch your cameras you'll see me walking over and asking her and I told her to forget it and put a can of cat food that I was going to get also I just tossed it in a buggy that would be me...this girl needs to be straightened out like I said is it the first time honestly I'd rather seeing her when I saw that she was going to have to be the one that I asked because I knew it was time till I got pissed off.. you can let her know I'm not some homeless bum wondering around the parking lot . I have been telling a lot of people the good prices on cigarettes and snuff at price less word of mouth goes a long ways

She saw me standing at the customer service section and never tried to assist me. I went to the express lane and asked the gentleman there for assistance he went to her. While I understand Covid has changed everyday life for everyone, common courtesy shouldn't be that hard to come by. A simple hey sorry we aren't taking returns now (when the sale sign was completely misleading) instead of the curt smart response I received. I too work with and have worked with the public for 34 years. I will NOT be back to any of these stores. I will encourage everyone I know to avoid them at all costs too.

They also do a good job of keeping up with having carts inside so you rarely have to get a cart from the parking lot. Selection is above average and they have a lot of local produce. This location has a nice deli which is underrated or maybe unknown. Their burgers are surprisingly good and more than reasonable size for the price. You can get a burger, fries, and a drink for under $10 as of this review. Sometimes the wait is a little long but that is generally due to them making your fries fresh. They also offer other sandwiches and have a good selection for dinner as well.

Food City has a strange bakery section. It's a long string of tables from nearly the front of the store to nearly the back of the store. It's not consolidated like other stores. It's not an aisle either. The "fresh" seafood department is nearly non-existent. The one thing to their credit is that the cashier unloads the shopping cart for the customer.

They do supply local businesses so sometimes my favorite items go by fast and are not in shelf until there next shipment which can be extended depending on the supplier. That is not a negative, just an unfortunate side effect of their success. I won't go into their entire inventory but they have a nice variety of items, not all "Asian" stuff. I Recommend you visit and see for yourself. The staff has always been very friendly to me and they will even go out of their way to special order an item that you may be requesting. a down side to this place is that the owner plays the music WAY WAY WAY too loud. I get it, he REALLY likes his Christian gospel music but it's almost so loud that I can't hear myself think. I know the all the cashier have commented on it being disruptive before. Meh... It could be worse but I hope they turn the volume down to an enjoyable level. lol. Parking is sometimes an issue. There are not very many spots. I've had to park next door once but it was not an issue. 5 stars all the way for this place.
