There are two Mexican restaurants within eyesight of each other. One has many many nice cars parked out front and the other has many work trucks and a Mexican store attached to the restaurant. Guess what? Hands down, no question, ruuuuunnn to the one with the work trucks. That is where the authentic cuisine is going to found. I recently spent a few days in Greeneville on business and was looking at local restaurants for dinner the first night. La Perla caught my attention. Going there was the right decision. La Perla is a local mom-and-pop Mexican restaurant and grocery. They butcher their own meats, and make their corn tortillas fresh. Everything we had was top quality. The salsa that comes out before ordering is some of the best I've had. It's a little chunky, which I love, and is obviously not processed. It's bright, fresh, and very flavorful. I ordered the aguachile, which is similar to ceviche: fresh shrimp marinated in lime juice with cucumbers, red onion, and avocado. This isn't something I ever see on Mexican menus around here, and it immediately caught my attention. It takes a little longer to arrive as the shrimp have to marinate before serving, but it is well worth the wait. Crisp and clean, with a nice tartness from the lime. This dish really made my night! I'd also ordered a classic street taco with lengua, which came out first, and it was delightfully sweet and tender. The fresh-made corn tortilla was tasty, and had just the right bit of crisp around the edges while still being a bit soft (but still holding up to the taco) in the middle. The folks who run La Perla are wonderful. I felt less like a restaurant guest and more like a friend stopping by. That plus a well-crafted meal made for a perfect dinner. My only regret is that I didn't have a chance to go back for a second meal, but I'll definitely be back. read more

This is a cute Mexican-style market that serves food, good for takeout during COVID-19! There was a slight strange smell but that may be the cooking or the cleaner smell(?) We've been here before and the food was good. Not today. Enchiladas, rice and beans were barely warm. I had the "signature" A La Perla special and it was not hot, but dried out and it came out 5 minutes after the other 2 meals. If you don't speak Spanish, don't even try to communicate with the staff.
