We made our annual trek to Union Gap to stock our freezer with these wonderful tamales. The drive is beautiful and the food es el mas bien! They're currently featuring seasonal asparagus & pepper jack tamales as well as cactus tamales. Heavenly! My only issue is that they continue to use thin plastic bags and include throw away plastic utensils as well as styrofoam packaging. I wish they would transition to more eco-friendly packaging. read more

I was just driving by and I like tamales, so I decided to stop in and pick up a few to go. I didn't have the nerve to try the asparagus tamales, though I like asparagus, but just got a few pork, my usual favorite. These were authentic enough, a fact of note since so many tamales are sort of fake in style, and rather good but not quite up to the best I've had in size and meatiness. read more

I had no idea that Los Hernandez Tamales had a second location. I was really questioning the GPS when it was leading us there but it didn't lead us astray at all. I knew only of the Union Gap location which is not far from the Interstate and just a little south of the Yakima city limits. But this location does indeed have a Yakima address. In some ways I like this location a little more. There is just a few more tables and seats at this location than the other and if you want a beer to go with your meal you can have one. Menu is a little bit expanded as well which I am sure is good but we can never pass up these James Beard award winning tamales when we are in the area. The tamales are as good as ever. I had a pork one and a Jalapeño one and they were just out of sight like they always are. We get the meal usually and the rice and beans that comes along with the tamales are just stellar. So very glad to know that another location exists in Yakima. It's a bit of a drive from the Interstate, twenty minutes about but the extra bonuses would make it worth it not that the Union Gap location doesn't deserve just as much love. read more

We had gone to the Union Gap location before, but decided to try out this location. It is newer with an industrial building feel. Got here about thirty minutes before closing. We felt a little rushed as they seemed to be focused on closing up. Went with the tamales with beans and rice and some dozens to go. Lady forgot about my single tamale that i ordered and took a while to get someones attention since they were busy trying to leave. All in all, just an okay visit. When my friend told me of this popular hole in the wall tamale spot, I just HAD TO visit and see what the hype was about. This tamale spot was featured in many newspapers and in the news! They had chicken, pork, jalapeño, and cactus cheese tamales (which were my favorite) You can order them fresh or frozen which was perfect for eating them the next day on the mountain Plus they give you heating instructions! A lot of people have told me I need to come here. Is it 'all that'? Short answer: Yes. THE ROSES: Easy to find location. Ample parking. Warm, friendly staff. A dining space that is modest but operating theater clean! And yes, truly amazing tamales! A tamale platter served with beans and rice comes at a reasonable price and is truly delicious! THE THORNS: Menu is a little on the limited side, but it appears everything they do, they take the time to get VERY right! I was super disappointed as I was really looking forward to these amazing tamales I heard about. I am all about the jalapeños and cheeses tamales, my favorite. They had none, in fact she said they were seasonal, they only make them starting end of august through I think end of September how are jalapeño tamales not and every day thing? It's not like jalapeños are a seasonal pepper... They had pork, chicken and a " seasonal" asparagus with pepper jack cheese........ Iykyk James beard classic award winner. Their masa is amazing. Tamales are so good that you do not need any salsa but that green one is delicious. You can't get cooked and frozen to take with you to remember how good these tamales are. I always stop in when passing to the east side of the state. read more

Know what's better than getting tamales at a place that's won a James Beard award for them? Having a second location to do so! This week, the now world renowned Los Hernandez Tamales opened a second location that continues to serve up some of the best tamales you'll ever taste! This spot is located out in West Valley, across from Walmart, making these heavenly meat packed masa bombs closer than ever to the west side of the city. They've also created a space that has more seating and is easier to get in and out of. Our little man and I had a dude date to check out the newly minted location. Half a dozen tamales were around $9 and were perfect for two of us. He downed a couple and I had three - the perfect number to be just full enough but not overly so. The chicken and pork were excellent and, like most people who've been here, we can't wait for the asparagus tamales! We sat and chatted with the owners who are an absolute delight! They're excited about what their doing and despite the accolades, remain incredibly humble. End of the day, this is somewhere you need to be going. Literally a national treasure (no, not the Nicholas Cage movie) in our town! If it's good enough for James Beard, it's good enough for you! You'll love it as much as we do! read more

Best. Tamales. Ever. We never miss an opportunity to grab a few dozen of their Tamales when we are in the Yakima area. You can get them fresh/ hot or frozen. They have a couple of tables for dining there, and the staff are very welcoming, but it's not a full service restaurant. Really, it's all about the product (including seasonal specials like asparagus tamales) and it's ohhh so good. read more

Probably worse shrimp tacos I've had. For the price, I expected bigger portion size since it was $3.99 a piece. Seasoning was bland, toppings were just too putty to even mention. No lime or other spices on the side either. I don't know about their tamales but would never go back for tacos. read more

Good service, the best tamales. We tried all 3 available- pork, chicken and jalapeño/pepper jack. As a vegetarian my fave (and the only one I tried) was the jalapeño/pepper jack. My husband said the meat ones were both equally delicious. The red and green salsas are not spicy at all but refreshing and add a nice flavor to the tamales without over powering them. We ordered 6 and regret not getting more Togo as we live 3hrs away. read more

We were driving through Yakima and looking for a lunch spot. Los Hernandez popped up there we went. Good home-cooked tamales! After the meal we went back to the counter and ordered some frozen tamales to take home. Now I wish we were living closer to Los Hernandez. I would have been eating there every week! :) read more

I visited the Yakima area for a few days and this was the first place I stopped to eat, not realizing how darn good the tamales would be. They are not huge in size so the two tamales plus rice and beans makes for a very affordable (especially by Western WA standards, where I live) and delicious meal. I tried the chicken but my favorite was the seasonal nopales con queso. I bought a few to go and enjoyed them for breakfast. The masa they use has a great flavor and texture. I also think their beans are particularly flavorful, perfectly cooked and seasoned. This is really a quality place, with great service and spotless. read more

The tamales were great. Unfortunately, our order seemed to be misunderstood. We wanted two combination plates with a couple of tamales each and rice and beans. Somehow that got translated as two half dozen tamales, and a carton of rice and carton of beans and some (really good) salsa. No eating utensils. We were eating takeout as a date. The price was also far higher than we expected to pay, due to the misunderstanding. read more

So so happy they opened a location closer to this area, having to travel quite a ways for a pregnant wife for delicious tamales was a chore, now we can walk there if we want, super good tamales and either received a free tamale or soda from the owner himself, he definitely knows his tamales and super humble man i also thanked him for his service to our country. read more

They brought out refreshing cups of water, chips and 6 types of salsa, while we reviewed the menu. The "chips" are actually whole corn tortillas fried! So you use them whole or break them into chips yourself. My guess on the salsas are: salsa verde (tomatillo), avocado, pico de gallo, a smoky ancho, a citrusy habanero, and something else. They all had distinct flavors and a little light spice, but we wanted spicier. They brought out the "no way Jose" sauce and warned us it's their spiciest and it sneaks up on ya! We tried it and found it was not burning but quite nice. We drizzled this sauce all over our food. It was the most flavorful of the bunch. The menu is quite extensive, with everything from sopas to sopes, tortas to tacos, cocktails to desserts. We each got a plate of food, meaning the main entree comes with Mexican red rice and refried beans. I got the sopita (aka sope) with barbacoa and a fish taco and husband got a dipped torta (I forget the name) filled with adobada. The amount of food and meat was quite generous, the toppings (veggies) too. I really enjoyed my sope - it had the perfect crispy crust and I could taste the slightly sweet creamy taste of the masa. The barbacoa was not as flavorful as I thought it would be. It was more like stewed beef meat. It was fine but I was expecting really deep flavor. The fish taco seemed freshly grilled and was moist, but there was a bit of a "fishy" smell and flavor that kind of took over. Thankfully, the generous veggie toppings and fresh handmade corn tortilla and salsas helped mask the flavor. Have to hand it to them that those tortillas are really good! The Mexican rice was perfect. I haven't had that flavor and texture in Mexican rice in a while and thought that was well done. The refried beans were good but also had a flavor I couldn't place my finger on... My husband said everything was really good on his plate. His torta was massive! Really flavorful and stacked with things. The adobada was very tasty. I wish I ordered that meat instead of the barbacoa and fish. Overall pretty good Mexican food, generous portions, really sweet service. The interior is also really clean and nicely decorated. They have a small parking lot out back.

The meat in the tacos was good, seasoned well, there wasn't any gristle or huge chunks of fat which was nice. Salsas were self serve, and while not at all hot added some great extra flavor. Would definitely say the tacos are worth it. The chile relleno was also really good, I'd never had one before but it was cooked and fried well and the red sauce that covered it was tasty. The rice and beans were cooked nicely, nothing felt too heavy or too greasy. The rice and beans still tasted like rice and beans. Would definitely come here again.

It came with rice and refried beans, both well prepared. I used to order the Cheese/Onion Enchilada plate, which includes two enchiladas plus rice and beans, and I'd always end up taking half home (never quite the same reheated). Since my appetite is smaller, I now ask for just one cheese/onion enchilada on its own. The staff never blinks at the request, and my husband happily shares a bit of his refried beans with me. My meal was perfection. Definitely worth checking out. It's not the most extraordinary Mexican food in the area, but it's always very good--better than we can make at home--and that's why we keep coming back.

There were three of us dining, and when our food came out, only two meals were delivered. We waited patiently and a second server came and noticed we had not received our third meal. He went to the kitchen and had conversation with the staff, and one of the servers had delivered our third meal to another table so two of us only had our dinner and we started to eat. One of the guests in our party went to open their burrito, and there was no meat in it, and it was specifically a beef burrito. Another server came again took the burrito back to the kitchen, and it was the wrong order. They made a new burrito and by this time the third entrée came out so we essentially all ate our dinner at different times because they were not delivered at the same time which was awkward. When the bill came the one entrée that was delivered correctly was overcharged and there was no mention of an up charge for a cream sauce on the enchilada. I questioned the server and she explained that the cream sauce was more expensive. I have no problem with an upcharge if it's listed on the menu. The prices at this restaurant are a little high. The food was just OK. I shared my experience with the person that recommended this restaurant and they were shocked as they dine in there regularly. I hope this was just an off night for them, but based on my experience, I would not return.
