I had dinner here with a large family group, and the staff did an excellent job getting the food out fast. And they did an even better job of helping several people remember what they ordered. But in defense of my dinner companions, I think they were confused about what they ordered because every dinner plate looked like a huge party platter. I had my suspicions about this and ordered an enchilada a la cart and a salad, but they too were huge! You definitely get a generous serving here so wear your stretchy pants and be prepared to take home your leftovers. Food was decent. I would come back again. Sorry I forgot to take pics. The only thing I was not a fan of was the margarita on the rocks. Too much sweet and sour flavoring, and I believe it's batch made. Los Aztecas satisfied our craving for Mexican Cuisine. We pulled into the parking lot off a busy road. There were a lot of people from the motel next door hanging out nearby. It gave off a shady feel. When we walked in we were pleasantly surprise. The restaurant was clean and decorated in a cute way. There were several rooms so it wasn't too noisy. Our server was super quiet. Not rude but not personable. However, as we were leaving he was animated and super friendly. I enjoyed my bowl very much. My friend was disappointed with her meal. The service provided by our waitress was really good, the food not so much. The salsa provided had no tomato flavor and was just straight up inedible. The salsa tasted like air and gasoline in your mouth. For my meal I got a chicken salad, they covered the entire plate in white cheese sauce to the point it made everything on the plate soggy, and the bacon which came with the salad was stone cold and hard as a rock. Decided to try this place out for lunch during our visit to Dubuque, IA. We were greeted promptly and shown to our table right away. Our server then provided us with a complimentary basket of tortilla chips and salsa. The salsa tasted fresh and had a nice kick to it. We ordered the Las Yolandas (three chicken enchilads served with rice, lettuce, sour cream, and guacamole) and the Huevos con Chorizo (served with beans and rice). The chorizo was cooked perfectly and not too greasy. Everything we ordered was tasty and hit the spot. I wouldn't say it was the best Mexican food I've ever had but our overall food experience was good. Service was casual but friendly. Thankful for a terrific recommendation from a Dubuque resident, because this was a very good dinner stop. Visited on a busy midweek night, greeted warmly, and my server, Ramon, was not only spot on regarding suggestions but also a kind man with positive, friendly customer service. Their chips and salsa starter was quite good, homemade chips with a tasty, homemade salsa that was tasty. Ramon's selection of carne asada was superb! Served on a 12" oval plate, it was a large portion with delicious beans, rice, tortillas, and guacamole. I loved it, cooked perfectly, would have again in a heartbeat. We stayed at motel next door and walked over. Saw mouse station baits and shredded snake skin outside. They still had masks required signs still up. We didn't have along and get it's Iowa who have no mask mandate. They let us eat. We shared 3 enchiladas beef and chicken. They also had a white cheese sauce on them. We've had better. We brought in a very hungry, energetic group of 16 here on a busy Friday night after calling ahead for reservations. They were on it! They kept drinks filled, were attentive without being intrusive, and were super friendly with a good sense of humor. I liked this spot ....so much I'm probably going again today. They have something I haven't seen in awhile and that was the combination options. Like 1 taco , one burrito beans and rice, one taco one chili relleno w/rice. I wasn't to big of a fan of the ground beef but I was a fan of the tortilla chips being served warm. The price that I paid including tip was cheaper the ....chipotle....five guys....olive garden...yeah that's right i named names. Beans and rice were mushy like they came from a can. All food was under seasoned and under spiced. The crispy corn tortillas for the tostadas were soggy despite there not being anything wet on the plate. They brought me more food than I ordered. The waiter argued with me about it until I gave up, which was quickly. Arguing with waiters is not a hobby of mine. They charged me for it. This is your stereotypical large Mexican restaurant with singing waiters for b-days, lots of traditional Mexican kitchy stuff on the walls, and big booths, with big baskets of chips brought to the table promptly! The salsa was fresh too, only problem was it was the only bowl we got. My friend ordered a burrito, and I got the Veggie Fajitas with no cheese and no sour cream to make them Vegan! I got a ton of food with mine, I really enjoyed the guac, salad, beans and rice. As for the veggies it was a nice mix of onions, red and green peppers. Mostly onions so my breath was on fire after the meal! It was a lot of food and even though I had no eaten all day I could not finish my meal! This is probably the most authentic mexican food you can find in Dubuque. The restaurant attempts to make the atmosphere feel like you're in Mexico with a ton of cultural paintings on the walls, hanging attire and hats, and mexican music playing throughout the restaurant. I think the food is delicious. However, I agree with Anne B, you have to make sure your palate can take spicy. Much of their sauces are already pre-made to be spicy, the salsa they serve can sometimes leave your mouth asking for water, and lastly, I think their pico de gallo is spicier than their salsa. If you like beef and cheese, I would recommend: quesadilla rojo with shredded beef (my favorite), or the beef fajitas, or combination #16 (1 beef taco, 1 beef burrito, rice and beans). Although, while there, the ONE thing I would RECOMMEND you getting is their HORCHATA! It's a drink made with rice, water, sugar, and cinnamon. I believe that Los Aztecas makes the best horchata anywhere. It has just the right amount of sugar and cinnamon that screams "yum" in your mouth. As for a few negatives, I noticed that then the waiters do not write down my orders (since the majority of the time I substitute the beans for just more mexican rice), they always seem to get my order wrong. !Fantastico! For starters, the Parking lot is full. Good sign and I assure you, not a disappointment whatsoever. Walk in and the delicious smell of chips welcomes you. And let me tell you, warm corn homemade chips with a delightful red salsa with a hint of spice which really comes through in a effective pairing. We sheepishly must admit that we devoured 3 whole bowls and two baskets of chips. The bilingual staff greeted us warmly and the food arrives muy rapido. And we asked if our high school students could practice their Spanish skills and the our waiter was unbelievably accommodating and spent extra time asking all questions slowly so they could comprehend and even offered some tidbits of advice to watch movies with the subtitles on. And before you might think this is not welcome, I assure you it was very much appreciated. Damian and Jesus were so professional and kind to us. Big tips are coming their way. They earned every penny of it. And now on to the main attraction: la comida (the food) Authentic entrees served on piping hot plates. The menu was plentiful and price was very reasonable. We had been at jimmy johns earlier this day and this amazing sit down meal (during covid) was mere $5 per person more. And that includes the margarita. Which was so delicioso. The portions were large. Only one of us were able to claim the "clean plate club". But I assure you it is not due to the flavor. It was spectacular. All in all, we will be here again. read more

After moving to Minneapolis, I was still singing the praises of Los Aztecas. It seemed kind of ridiculous, as there was quite a population of authentic Mexican restaurants to be found, yet I was dreaming of a restaurant back in Iowa. So most of the times when I head back to Dubuque, I want to go to Los Aztecas just to reaffirm in my head whether or not I was just romanticizing the place or if it truly does destroy nearly every authentic place I've visited in the Cities. Bottom line? Destroy is right. Don't get me wrong, there is plenty on Los Aztecas' menu that is not authentic. However, the important point to make is that it's all delicious. I have yet to find one thing that I haven't loved, even though I usually order the Mazatlan or some other seafood pile. The portions are ridiculously huge and the cheese may be a bit over generous, but that's midwestern influence for you. The tables come with a grip of hot sauces to spice things up. And that's not to mention their regular hot salsa that they divvy out free with their house-made tortilla chips. There is delicious at every turn. I might continue to get that "pffft, Iowan" look whenever I mention my affection for Los Aztecas when I'm back north, but whatever. Pffft all you want, you're not getting any of my crab quesadilla and you should be heartbroken about that. read more

The place was referred by the Hotel right next to it. Now I don't quite remember, but I believe you get a discount with your stay at that Hotel. I came here a couple of times. Food isn't all the good here, because they primarily use ground beef for anything. Actual beef with anything will cost you more than your average Mexican restaurant. Yet, their main hit here is half priced Margaritas Tuesday. It's so popular that it packs all the parking, including the Hotel's side as well.
