This place came highly recommended by a friend who's a total car nut, so we're glad we listened…read more Our car had a serious transmission problem (she ran, but in screeching protest), plus needed some brake work. These guys were honest, fast and competent - all good things in a mechanic. Not especially cheap, but that's to be expected. But it was a reasonable price for the amount and quality of work/parts required. The only downside was the length of time we had to wait when going to pick up the car up. I really don't know what they were doing back there with all the paperwork... the guys are super nice, and they do like to chat, though. Which leads to another little downside - being totally disabused of my notion of owning one of those cute little Minis, like the one I saw in the shop. According to the mechanics, Minis are prone to transmission problems - and for whatever reason, cost thousands more to fix than our Honda. Which, incidentally, is purring like a kitten and stopping on a dime.

After driving over 20 hours, in the driving rain, in an older Honda from San Jose, it finally…read moredawned on me why my visibility was a bit impaired. It wasn't the rain, it wasn't the darker skies of the Northwest nor was it my failing eyesight and glasses. It was because one of my headlights blinked out. Piece of cake. I pulled in, waited a bit, and they popped in a new filament. The guys are nice and liked to chat. Since I only had Yankee dinero, he accepted it in lieu of Canuck Loonies. I probably owe him 40 more American cents, since it was $0.964 CDN to $1.00US dollar today. Oh well, this should make up for the $1.31CDN per litter gasoline (do the math, about 4 litters per US gallon), that's over $5.00US/gallon. I won't cry any more about our Bay Area gasoline price.

When Home Depot, Canadian Tire, and Rona doesn't make the cut…read more You come here. I had plumbing issues. The nut surrounding a faucet cartridge was too big for any of my wrenches and sockets. Online searches for a larger socket/wrench lead me to sets of sockets and wrenches in the hundreds of $$'s. I didn't need that. All I needed was one size, since I have the ratchet. Princess Auto popped up on my search. Lo and behold, they sell the individual sockets from ~$10 - $15 each! Exactly what I was looking for! A far cry from the 100's of $$'s. Problem solved. I also had to get a driver adapter for the 1/4 in to 1/2 in size for the socket. I ended up getting 5 sockets in total, because I didn't know the size of that nut. I did this over two visits. Returns and exchanges were a breeze. No questions asked. I only needed the one socket an they happily delivered for my needs. It's out of the way for me, but it meant that I didn't have to buy an entire set of tools that would end up sitting around. In search of an odd tool? Recommend you do a search here. They just might have it.

Good old Princess Auto. I haven't shopped here in ages. I work nearby and was asked a friend to…read moredrop by to pick up some hex screws. Wow nothing has changed since last time I was here which was like at least 7 years ago. Princess Auto can be compared to Harbour Tools in the USA. Their prices are at the low end but there is a reason for that. You are sacrificing quality too for the price you pay. Overall, it is not bad. There are plenty of parking here. But to get to the store is quite tricky. It is not easy to find the entrance. They do have a giant sign that say Princess Auto. The store is big.
