I rarely go to bars anymore let alone consume alcohol - I haven't had an adult beverage since…read morebefore COVID - but yesterday, I had the chance to check out this interesting nightspot in Houston's Spring Branch neighborhood called Eighteen Ten Ojeman. My friend's band, Zenjii, had a live performance there. A power outage befell the establishment (thanks for nothing, Centerpoint!) so the show was switched from inside to the patio. I'll say that the patio is a bit on the gritty side but has a really cool, summertime-in-the-backyard kind of vibe. I was drawn to the numerous street signs and license plates that were strewn throughout. Thankfully, the weather was cooperative enough. I did have a chance to check the interior. While virtually pitch black, I was able to see some pinball machines and a pool table. On a normal day, the place is likely buzzing. If the patio presented itself as a place for tailgates and barbecues then the inside was a badass combination of dive bar, honky tonk, and punk rock club. And because I don't drink alcohol, I settled on a Mexican Coke, which was a decent $3.25. When I took my first sip, I was taken back to the summers of my youth when I went home to the Philippines after the school year. The opening of the bottle left a bit of a weird taste in my mouth so I decided to pour the rest in a complimentary plastic cup. And Coke - no matter what flavor it is - tastes better in a plastic cup, but that's a different story for another day. As for the staff, everyone from Becca to Jeremy is pretty cool. Even those who served me the Coke were down-to-Earth. They didn't ask me for ID. *Laughs* But seriously, Eighteen Ten Ojeman is a great place to pull up to in Spring Branch after you have some legit Korean BBQ, which the area is known for.

My coworkers and I visited this really cool Japanese-themed speakeasy after work one day and even…read morethough I was going through a sober challenge so couldn't partake in any of the beautiful and delicious-looking cocktails and other drinks, I greatly enjoyed the mocktail the bartender made me based off of me telling her what I like and the food from Hando next door (geez I think that was the worst run-on sentence I've written in a while). The mocktail made for me was expertly made even with my vague answer to her question of "what do you like"? Plus, it came in a super fun red fish cup (see in pictures). Unfortunately, I could not take the cup home but it was fun drinking out of it. The food from Hando next door was good for small bites while sipping on drinks; not too overwhelming and not underwhelming either in terms of size. I did think that the taste could be better though. Every dish felt like something was missing. Service was amazing. There was only one bartender when we visited with a party of eight and she took care of us masterfully.

Totally attentive and a total sweetheart! Josh was our bartender :) drinks were superb! I don't even drink gin! Loved all three of my craft cocktails! Jeremy Joseph! A vocal beast! I like a good dive bar, but I was surprised to find The Railyard on the edge of River Oaks. Even…read morethough it's in an affluent area, the bar is very laid back. I stopped in on a Friday evening for a night cap. The bar is a pretty decent size and they have their own parking lot. They have a large patio out front and there was plenty of seating indoors as well. It's a sports bar so there were a lot of TVs throughout. They also have arcade games including Skee Ball and Pop-A-Shot. The menu had beer, wine, and cider, but they do have a full bar. I didn't see any specialty cocktails on the menu so I just asked the bartender, Marc to make me a gin based cocktail. Marc came up with his version of a Corpse Reviver. It had a tart, yet fruity twist to it. I can't recall all of the ingredients he used, but I liked it. I also had a Gimlet which was really good. Marc informed me about The Railyard shot special. Any time a train rolls by, you can purchase a vodka based shot for $2. I'm not much of a shot person, but I went ahead and ordered a White Tea shot. It was really good. Everyone in the bar was friendly and I appreciated the diversity of the clientele. Super chill place, just as a dive should be.

Sassafras is all that, plus some Hasselhoff razzle-dazzle. I usually only get a few hours out every other week, so I am that annoying customer who asks for creative shots to speed up the drunk process. The bartenders at Sassafras never miss a beat. They've whipped up some concoctions that would make even Baywatch-era David Hasselhoff blush (in a good way, of course). They're patient with my indecisiveness and always manage to send me on my way with a drink that's both potent and delicious. Two thumbs up for strong cocktails, chill vibes, and a staff that knows how to have fun.

Happy hour daily from 4-8PM was $1 off draft beers that I could tell (my happy hour drinks were between $5.50-$6.50 each, and one off happy hour was $6.50). The staff were very considerate in raising the umbrellas outside so that we could see each other across the table. Inside was clean, had some cool little retro options and a pool table. Would definitely come back.

I appreciated that they have their own private parking lot so I didn't have to park on the streets or pay for parking. As soon as you go in, it is so dark you have to give your eyes a moment to adjust, especially if you're coming from the sunlight, but it did remind me of bars I've seen elsewhere. It's got that cool dark vibe definitely expecting some kind of rock band to play. It does seem small, but there is ample seating behind the stage on the way to the bathroom. Bartender was great super nice. She was very patient and also made recommendation for us as we didn't know what to drink. They also had a happy hour which is always a plus the restrooms as well. We're clean another plus. We didn't stay long so I know they were supposed to have somebody come play, but I highly recommend recommended. I don't know if they had food. They probably did. We didn't order any or ask.

I called back again to make sure there wasn't a minimum or anything, and they confirmed my reservation. When I showed up on game day, I walked into the full bar that clearly had no tables and went up to a man with a Decoy shirt on who said they don't do reservations. I told him I had just spoken to someone yesterday, and he "you have wrong information, there's no way we can do reservations with this many people - you probably called the corporate office (it's the number listed on their website so that made no sense)" and was very dismissive of me and not apologetic whatsoever. It's totally understandable that reservations wouldn't be possible on a World Cup day. Seems like the staff are not all on the same page, or I was misled to just get my group into the bar (which has happened at other bars during the tournament so it's not unheard of). Had to take my three nieces elsewhere at the last minute and don't imagine I'll be returning after that experience.
