Whenever I want a new cd or vinyl, the first place I think of and go to is looney tunes. There is a vast selection covering most genres and they also have band merch for sale ranging from posters to shirts to mugs! If you know a music junkie in your life, this is the spot to buy their next gift. Another thing I really like is that they give local artists a platform here and sell their music in store in it's own dedicated section. The only downside here is that while there is a big catalog, the selection for most individual artists is rather limited. Basically, I find an artist I like but there's only one of their albums in stock and this is the case for most artists I listen to in my personal experience here. That or they don't even have the artist I'm looking for and it becomes tedious looking for something I want to go home with. I've gone home walking out with nothing more times than not. There surely is something for everyone here though and it being locally owned is why I will continue to support it to the end. read more

I've been to a few other record stores in my various trips down to the City and Long Island, but Looney Tunes so far has been the best of the bunch, beyond a shadow of a doubt. I pretty much stuck with getting new records on this visit, but along with their excellent new vinyl collection, their CD section is top tier as well. Throw in the fact there's t-shirts galore and posters by the pound, plus box sets and used goodies, one would have to be Daffy not to Bug out here (obligatory bad pun... LOL) I got much new wax to add to my plethora of stacks, and only went slightly over my budget (primarily because of sales tax, but it's New York, so what can we do?). If you're a record or CD collector and are visiting Long Island, Looney Tunes is where you gotta shop. I'd go so far as to say even if you're staying in Manhattan, it would be worth your time to hop on the LIRR to Babylon and catch an Uber or walk the half hour from the station to the store. read more

Came here for the Frank Iero show and signing quite spontaneously, meaning I bought my ticket the morning of. Good thing too because the show ended up selling out. The organization was really well done and my only, only gripe was how you stand once in the store to watch a performance. They don't move the stands or anything so you are all standing ins ingle/double-file. It's not great and if there's a few taller people in the front, forget about a view, even if you're standing less than 40 feet from a musician. The stands did appear to be on wheels, so maybe just maneuvering them around the columns to make a little extra space? Other than that, the afternoon was great. I did get a sunburn, so if you are queueing up for a show in nice weather - bring shade and sunscreen! read more

Selection has variation and is neatly arranged and easy to find whatever you're looking for. Price obviously is gonna be more than like a Walmart or target however. I prefer the vibe and experience shopping at looney tunes than going to a big chain. You won't find a better experience shopping local and indie. I've been going to this store on and off for about 20 years, back when Karl's dad owned the place. This is back when I was totally awesome in Jr. High and I'd go to to get my Guns n Roses bootleg live concert cassettes. I was younger and didn't get the concept of chains vs. indie stores, but I remember thinking this was the coolest place around because they didn't cater to the NKTOB crowd that used to tease me for not knowing who Jordan Knight was. bitches. ANYWAY, over the years I saw this store grow both in terms of the selection of items they sold as well as literally, as they took over the space next to them. They started putting concerts on (including having Ozzy play on the roof, something my dad was actually involved in to some degree, since apparently the residents of Babylon weren't too keen on it so he hooked the owners up with the right legal connections to make sure the show happened. My dad rocks apparently!) They always had an incredibly selection of music, shirts, patches, magazines, rock memorabilia, all sorts of stuff that focused on the music, both mainstream and independent, with a heavy slant towards the latter. Sadly, they were destroyed in a fire this fall, which is tragic, all that rock memorabilia, all my old punch cards littering the alls, all the memories, gone. HOWEVER, I am psyched to hear that they are back on their feet, and the next time I'm down on Long Island I totally want to hit them up to see what the new store looks like. read more

Gone are the days of Tower Records and Sam Goody when you would flip through the CD stacks looking for the latest album of your favorite band....but one place that keeps the nostalgia alive is this little music store in West Babylon. Tuesday I came here with a friend for a pre-concert acoustic show and signing with local band, Taking Back Sunday. We swung by a couple hours earlier to grab the wrist bands for the event so we had an opportunity to check out the store before it was packed. I'm impressed that a standalone place such as this stays in business in this digital music world we currently live in, but the set up shows why there's still room for a couple of these record-based stores. Rows of used CDs at low prices as well as plenty of LPs dating from new to rare oldies make up a large chunk of the innards. You'll also find books, shirts, DVDs, coffee mugs, posters, and some Looney Tunes logo items if you're a truly loyal customer. One uniquely awesome spot is the listening station set up to give you an opportunity to jam to some music in different formats. The originality and passion for music shows throughout the store, especially with the signings they have scheduled going forward. There's a lot of good to say about the place, but a few things irked me a bit. When we returned for the acoustic show, there was quite a line outside to get in. This was understandable as the show hadn't started yet, but you could see there were plenty of people. When they finally let us in, there was a small stage towards the left hand side of the store and a group of maybe 10-15 of us were corralled into each of the CD aisles. People then filled in towards the registers and created a truly sardine-like set up that was a bit awkward and difficult for many (including ourselves) in seeing the band members perform. I noticed the CD racks were on wheels and thought that moving these aside (though an endeavor I'm sure) would've made for a much more open space for the crowd, but I'm sure they had their reasons not to. We also weren't a huge fan of having to exit after the show and re-lineup to reenter for the signing. But with the setup they had, there wasn't any other option. Despite this, overall Looney Tunes brought me back to my teenage years (that and Taking Back Sunday), and even though the acoustic show set up was semi-frustrating, the store itself was something respectable and refreshing to see (even if it's more vintage and old school). read more

We were on the island for the Lettuce show at the Paramount and had a wide open afternoon. Why not drive to the south shore and do some record shopping? I'd never been here (the last time I was at a record shop on Long Island it was the one in Oyster Bay... a loooooong time ago) but am glad we stopped in. Very. Nicely. Organized. That was great. Decent balance of old and new stuff. Also, it smells amazing in there. I like that it's independently owned but comes across more like a Purple Haze than your boyfriend's attic. Well lit and easy to navigate. The staff was a bit "too cool for school" for my taste but at a record shop it's pretty easy to avoid staff and just get lost in the music. They have an incredible collection of socks. Yes, socks. And the socks merit mention because they are so cool. Some were punny. But others were feminist. Feminist socks?! Yes, please! They also have a nice selection of apparel (strong island!), incense, candles and even crystals. I was VERY tempted by the mystery bags. 5 records for $4.99. They had these with CDs too. Seriously tempted. But I have to image, based on the other prices, that this is stuff they REALLY want to push so I resisted the urge. Although, now that I think about it, I have a friend who would love that as a gift. Okay...note to self...definitely going back for that box of 30 CDs for $11.99. Kris found an album he's been looking for (Herbie Hancock). I wasn't so lucky but it was still great to walk around. They had some used records I wouldn't have minded but they are about $2 more expensive than a nearby shop so I think I'll use Looney Tunes for my new stuff and stick to the other one for used. I used to work next door 13 years ago as a teenager. My favorite thing to do on Fridays was to go there and spend most of my paycheck lol. I bought my favorite CDs there (yes I'm a weirdo who still uses them). I've seen bands play on the roof and got autograph signings inside. I always bought band clothing too. Everyone who worked there was always very nice and you could tell how much they loved music also. I remember when the store went on fire, I was so upset that my favorite place wasn't going to be around anymore. Thankfully they rebuilt; things were different and more updated, but I still felt at home. Once in awhile I still make the trip to Babylon - I live a half hour away now - and it's worth it to feel that nostalgia and of course, walk out with a bunch of music. :) read more

You can even purchase record players as well as many versions of Monopoly, posters, tee-shirts and other music memorabilia. They also have an extensive CD collection as well. Listen, by all means, if you like the TGI Friday's of record stores, keep getting exploited. This place is absolutely my jam. I have a pretty extensive vinyl collection, so I come here often to browse the latest new & used vinyls that have come in. I grew up coming here to see some of my favorite bands and still have such fond memories of this place. The staff is awesome. Karl (the owner) truly loves music and will take the time to chat with you about every genre imaginable. He makes it a point to hire people who also love music and I've had so many great conversations with them as well (and some great recommendations). Looney Tunes has become my favorite music store in all of NYC and Long Island. I never mind taking a 20 minute trip out east to see what they have tucked away in their record section. As an avid vinyl collector, I'm thoroughly impressed with their selection. Although it may not be the biggest selection i've ever seen, I always leave with a couple of records that I haven't seen in other stores. They have a great metal and punk selection, better than any store that I've been to. I've even seen a few rarity records that I never though I'd see poking around in stores. They also have a really great folk rock selection, as well as hip hop and rap. Plenty of used LP's to dig through and a separate 45 section. The CD section is huge, multiple rows to skim through and a very helpful staff. Looney Tunes also does in store performances which is really cool, I believe they also have a recording studio. If you're searching for a fantastic music shop with a great selection, look no further! read more

The best of a dying breed. I used to be a big fan of Slipped Disc in Valley Stream, but as more and more music stores shut down, this is about all that's left. Not to say that's a bad thing. What can I say? I am old enough to remember a time when going to a record shop was the highlight of my day, digging through crates to find an oldie but goodie. Ipods killed that, most record shops have folded, but when I moved to West Babylon I found the coolest record shop ever. The staff is tops, they know music and really that is the key. They play cds and records, you can look for hours and there is no presure to buy. Oh and if they dont have it they get it and in a good amount of time. They have a great section for used merch as well as local bands. I love the idea of the local bands section, it helps keep Long Island music alive and kicking. Great Live performances, meet and greets and signings. I am not talking about bands you havent heard of, they get todays new artists as well as great artist who have been around. They have occupied that little strip group of strip stores moving a knocking walls etc. I had quite a few punch cards on their walls. I've been coming here since the 90s. The selection is hit or miss if you're into the underground extreme metal scene. Always check the used bins. They have a good rewards program which entitles one to free CDs after so many purchases. I've probably turned in my freebie card 10 times or so. The staff are always helpful and are willing to listen to any suggestions, gripes, or inquiries. Today was Record Store day, and it wasn't as mobbed as one would expect. I walked in the door just after 10 and was able to purchase 2 of the 3 items which I was seeking. Support local music! This is one of the last older brick and mortar music stores on Long Island. Despite a couple of flaws, Looney Tunes truly is the BEST Long Island has to offer in terms of record and memorabilia stores tailored specifically to music fans. I've visited this store twice, and always have a great time visiting. There is just such a great variety of items that pretty much all record stores don't ever carry. While most stores basically have your normal CDs, Vinyl and crap DVDs, Looney Tunes offers t-shirts, collector's items, record players, incense, posters, promotional items, buttons, box sets, trinkets, books (new CLEAN ones, not bent-up dust-ridden junk), and even "mystery CDs" if you're feeling risky. I'll begin with the positives - first, the store is legit, spacious and CLEAN. Everything is organized extremely well and all music items are separated by their various genres and artists in a very clear and concise fashion. You will have no trouble finding what you're looking for and items are always binned correctly. They even have a 25 cent CD rack which I was able to find some descent stuff in. Secondly, staff is very nice. Now, while this seems a given for record stores, it is always welcome. I've been to other collectible shops where staff are just there to be there, and don't really care for the items they are selling. This seems best with toy collectible and comic shops. Most of the people at these places are just jerks. Anyway, they'll help you if you need it, but otherwise will let you do your own searches. Next, prices. This to me, especially at a place that sells used items, is most important (as it would be for anyone, really). New CDs range from about $10 to $17ish, depending on their popularity. Undertandable and fair most of the time. Yet in terms of used CD shops, Looney Tunes carries the CHEAPEST selection. Used items range anywhere between $2 to $5, again depending on the demand, but ALL CDs are very fairly prices. I've been to other stores where they expect up to $10 for a USED item that has been released for more then 10 to 20 years, which is just ludicrous. Looney Tunes is one of the only places that seems to understand that when it comes to music media, stuff can EASILY be found online for a cheap or cheaper price, so they NEED to compete. The fact that they are able to afford better facilities than other record stores shows this is working. I also mentioned the bargain bin which is always fun to look through. Ok, next is selection. No, they don't carry EVERYTHING, but they carry a LOT. This store can tailor to ALL ages of music lovers, but I'm talking REAL music fans, not middle school kids looking for the next Justin Beiber album (although they probably carry that too). I couldn't find SOME death metal CDs I wanted, but they did have others and for good reasonable prices. You'll have no problem finding ANY genre you'd want. When it comes to positives, overall I'd say the place is just plain FUN to sift through. I had a blast looking at the books on sale as well. They were all retail prices but they had some AWESOME stuff I've never seen anywhere else. Negatives are small but enough to warrant taking off a star. Firstly, I just wish the store was BIGGER, so as to be able to carry a better selection than they already have. If they were one day able to afford it, I would only see them making more money if they expanded. Long Island is filled with music fans who really would LOVE a nice BIG music and memorabilia place to shop at. Next flaw I'd say would have to be the t-shirts. Sure, maybe i'm nitpicking, but you could find likely the very same tees at Hot Topic. Their selection of bands on shirts are pretty much all the same ol' mainstream bands. Yea I'm probably nitpicking with that one but it would be cool to see a wider selection. Plus I wish stores would be able to cut down on the $20 tag for all shirts. Isn't there ANY WAY to get tees under $20? I'd say that is it with complaints. I have a hard time finding more. So if you've got a friend who is really into music, this would be the PERFECT place to go for a gift. Or just you treating yourself. Ok, so you walk into looney tunes, which by the way has been there forever even though destroyed by fire and now thankfully rebuilt, and the delicious smell of incense hits you and you are immediately sent back to 1970 something. I've lived in this area all my life and for as long as I remember Looney Tunes has always been there. Its funny cause it seems that the people working there have also been there forever (even though some are quite younger than me) The point is that they are so friendly, helpful and knowledgeable and really seem to love their job so they treat the customers with honesty and respect. Aside from all that, the movie and music selection is awesome! Not to mention all the "extra's" that go on there. Let me preface this by saying I haven't purchased a CD in at least 5 years. However I have been to Looney Tunes several times within the last 5 years a bunch. They always have signings and random shows for bands that just came out with a new album. When I DID buy CD's, this is where I would come because they always had what I was looking for. Their hardcore/punk selection is huge but they also have the regular chart toppers as well. The prices were never too bad....definitely better than those big chain stores. They also have a big vinyl section thats not organized the best. Buy local....don't buy from those big box stores. read more
