Made my 1st visit today after seeing a random post on reddit about this spot...and WOW!! If you are into craft beer, particularly limited edition and premium stouts, this is *THE* place to go! They stock stouts from across the US and from the known premium brewers. They have a section on the shelf and another section in the cooler...I believed it was referred to as the cave. Pricing is aligned with what I'd expect for this level of quality...which may be too steep for some, and there's other options here that will suit everyone. I have been looking for a replacement for my previous craft beer shop in my old apartment complex in Austin and so I decided to check out Lone Star Beverages after seeing some review praise their craft beer selection to see if it would be a suitable replacement. Unfortunately I don't think it is quite what I was looking for despite being a surprisingly interesting, yet different, option. The general vibe I had walking into the place was neighborhood convenience store. Up front is a selection of wine and beer paraphernalia (koozie's etc) near the near the checkout counter. I mostly skipped past this since my main focus was beer so I hope I didn't miss anything interesting as a result of that choice. There was a good selection of some non-refrigerated craft beers along part of the back wall that included a decent selection of singles (though they seemed to be slightly pricier options vs being a major focus). The refrigerated area in back seemed be stocked with quite a bit, but far from entirely, of the standard convenience / grocery store faire but I imagine that is to allow quick access and sales for people less interested in the craft beer stock they offer. I almost missed the most interesting part of the store which is a walk in refrigerated section towards the front of the fridges though. This area is filled with a mix of singles and 6 packs with a focus on the latter. I have to say this is one of the unique things I've seen in a beer shop even though I'm not sure it worked personally for me. For an indecisive person like myself, it was a little bit cold as a place to linger in but the novelty had me push through to look at the full stock of what they had. It really was a good sized refrigerated craft beer section, so that is a huge bonus for people wanting to pick up something cold and ready to drink. My expectations might be a bit high when I was trying to replace shop with a bar with 20+ beers on tap and a focus on individual bottles. This is a nice local shop with a good selection of craft beers overall that is a boon to its local neighborhood where selection is more limited. The staff seemed friendly and I'll likely be coming back to enjoy the place for what it is versus what I was hoping it would be. It might not be what I was looking for but I think there are a lot of redeeming things here for someone not looking for as focused of an experience as I was and it seems like a local business worth supporting. So long as you view it as convenience store with a good beer selection versus a beer destination I don't think you will be disappointed. read more

It's always overwhelming when you walk in with so many selections and not knowing what to choose. The service was immediate and impressive! The guy there asked me questions to understand what I like then guided me to those specific areas for me to choose from. If it wasn't for him, I'd probably still be going idle to idle lol. I travel alot and bring home craft beers for my husband that he can not get in California. I like to purchase from local establishments before going to the Total Wine. I found Lone Star on yelp (per usual) and saw they were called "the best for local texas beer" by a reviwer and they had a check in offer. Yay! When I arrived they emplyees were a little stand offish and were watching the Patriots spanking the Jets on TV. I saw they sold Hop Stitch clothing but they did not have my husbands size (boo). They have the local beers in the walk in and on the favorites shelf outside the frige. If it is on the fav shelf the limit is 2. Most of the beers were not marked (price and description) so I had to do a lot of reading. When I checked out the guy took my 5 beers and put them in a plastic bag and lifted it over to me- no wrapping or anything so it was a big cLANG! I asked for the paper bags to wrap them in (which were on the counter). He handed me 5 of the smallest ones that wouldn't even fit my giant bottles. I refused those and asked for the bigger ones. I would have been happy with a cardboard 6 pack holder... I thought he was pretty rude considering how polite I was and I just spent $50. I was preventing him from watching the game though so.... to surmize - good selection but it is unlabeled. The beer you want may or may not be cold. Service is yucky. read more

Lone Star is the perfect neighborhood store. They have a pretty great selection of craft beer, and the owner Sam, is the nicest and most knowledgeable business owner I've ever met. My husband and I came in because we are regulars at Lone Star Taps & Caps, both of these businesses are owned by the same family. We were greeted and asked if we were looking for something in particular, and we talked to Sam about beer for about 30 minutes after that XD. Their beer selection is perfectly curated, they have stuff that I haven't seen anywhere else in the DFW, lots of Jester King, lots of The Brewery, lots of New Braunfels brewing (by now you probably already noticed I am a fan of sours). I think that they may not have the quantity that Total wine or Specs has, but they do have much better quality than any other place. I honestly couldn't even tell you about the wine because I am not a wine person, but they do know their stuff and everyone is super happy to help. I drove by this place for a year or two before stopping in. Now that they've redone the front sign / facade of the store, it's more eye catching, but I used to think it was just another beer-n-wine quickie mart. I couldn't have been more wrong. The first time I walked in, many years ago now, it was magic. The walk-in beer cooler... if you don't hear angels singing in your head when you walk in, you're not a beer fan. The selection has only gotten better over the years, but service and expertise is the same - reliable as always. Love talking beer with these guys. And Sam and Rick aren't the only beer heads there. Everyone there is fun to talk beer with. And the Friday tastings are, of course, awesome. I've also bought mini and full size kegs here for multiple occasions. Prices are higher than the big box stores, but hey, BUY LOCAL! I love supporting the smaller local guy. And I'm not the only one. Sure the grocery stores have the more famous of local selections like Revolver and Deep Ellum, but after that it's tough to find what you're looking for. This place is awesome! The staff is beyond helpful... they're able to assist in picking beer one on one (since it was for my husband- not me). They were able to take the time to help me pick my beer based on what my husband requested. And they ALSO have USPS inside so if you're sending beer else where this is super awesome. They won't pack it for you, for regulations purposes. However, you can pack it in your car and ship it; so be prepared to do it solo (insider tip.). But it saves a trip around town! First of all, I don't even drink beer or liquor. With that said, my son from Iowa came to visit me and he is a beer junkie, though not a snob. Makes his own and loves all the micro brews throughout the U.S. Wanted some Texas brands so after looking at these reviews was glad to take him by Lone Star Beverages. I could not have been more proud of the Texas beer selection here. The owner was more than helpful and took the time to explain each beers (who knew!) and a little history about each. Full Disclosure: I am friends with Rick, the owner of this store. That said, I started coming to Lonestar before I knew him personally and was impressed by his service and selection from the first visit. A buddy told me to email him asking about a few beers I wanted. Having never met me, he responded within minutes and engaged me in a dialogue that ended with me getting what I wanted and him soliciting suggestions for similar items to carry in case he didn't have it on the next visit. The store is a great size. Lots of choices set up in both cooled and non-cooled sections. The wine and champagne selection is usually not the focus of my trip, but I have asked about a few items and Rick was able to order them if they weren't already stocked. The walk in cooler is where it's at: no turntables, no microphone, but lots of ready-to-drink beer! I also like the addition of Friday afternoon tastings. The employees attempt to snag everyone in the store to sample the week's offerings, whether they're seasonal specialties or a themed selection (pumpkin beers, beers from a new brewery). This has helped me bring home a few bottles I'd otherwise have left on the shevles. Bottom line: customer service first, selection a close second. Best beer store in DFW. read more

Who would have thought that one of the best beer stores in the area would be in Carrollton? Apparently, Rick did. There's a shopping strip in the far part of Carrollton up where my girlfriend's mom lives. If it weren't for that, I'd have probably only heard about Lone Star and never shopped there. It's impossible not to hear about them, though. They word-of-mouth advertising that people do for this place is incredible. Kind of a medium-large store. Big in terms of what would have been a liquor/beverage store before. Medium now that Total Wine and the larger Spec's exist. The front is full of a great beer selection. Some of the beer is amazing stuff, some is good local stand-by stuff, and some is that kind of beer where it's the "new thing" and hyped beyond its wildest dreams. It's worth noting that this is also where I see the most Jester King. I see it around other places, but usually only a few bottles of one or two. My favorite Jester King is the creepy little prince beer. Lone Star usually has it. If not, they have the hop lion Noble King. Behind that is part of the store. Especially in Texas summers. The Walk-In Fridge! It's not huge, but it's packed from floor to ceiling with cans and bottles of all kinds and sizes. There's several singles in here as well. The guys behind the counter are knowledgeable, helpful, and friendly. They understand the market and often have great contacts with brewers and distributors. I was excited to find several items that had sold out in other location (well, Austin locations, but still). Lots of various rarities. And the beer cave is impressive and very, very cold. It's not obvious just from driving by that this is one of the best beer stores in the metroplex, and apparently it's got some people fooled based on the number of customers they have who walk out with a case of Bud Light. But at least they make you walk past a great selection of craft beer to get to it. If you want to find out how good the store is, stand out front and poll people on how far they've driven to get there. You'll be amazed. Should be your first stop for specialty craft beers from across the nation, especially if you're looking for some tips. They certainly don't have everything in existence, but they focus on a well-rotating stock of what's hot and what's seasonal. These guys are the sole resellers for some beers and can be counted on to get at least a little bit of some of the rarest stuff on the market. Fun fact - they also have several meads in a portion of their wine racks. The employees are great - come in regularly and they'll know you in no time and make recommendations. Beers by the single bottle, by the bomber, by the four-pack, by the six-pack, on the shelf or in the walk-in cooler. They even have a free tasting almost every Friday, sometimes hosted by a brewery and sometimes just a selection of great beers. Living down the street from this place is as good as it gets. There are the 3 same guys who are always working and ALWAYS smiling. it's great to see a familiar face when you go in. They are the first to offer to help me carry stuff from the back to the counter (maybe I'm drinking too much?), which is always nice. This is by far the best craft beer selection that I've come across in TX. The owner is a great guy and really tries, along with his staff, to help you find what you are looking for. The "Beer Cave" is a walk in cooler that is organized by beer type and region (Belgian, Texas, Colorado, etc.)-rather impressive. The prices are very affordable as well, granted the type of beer sold here is a little more by nature of the product. I priced them out against SPEC's for kegs and they won my business based on three things: -Knowledege of the keg beer they had -Backstocking the kegs themselves instead of having to order -They offer full "Party Packs" with everything included -They had better selection than SPEC's My wife and I love this place, you'll see things in there that you just wouldn't come across elsewhere. read more

By far the best Beer store in DFW! Not only is it super affordable but the have one of the best selections in town. I regularly special order kegs from there and the turn around time is amazing. Free craft beer tasting every Friday from 5-8pm!?!? That's just kick ass. I grew up in Carrollton just around the corner from where Lonestar is located now. Carrollton was dry up until the early 2000s. We used to have to drive to The Colony or to Addison just to get some beer. Hell, now I could walk from my mom's house to get beer from Lonestar. The owners and staff are phenomenal. They are friendly, patient, and full of knowledge about anything beer related. They pride themselves of having a diverse selection of beer and routinely accessing new, unique, highly-sought after beers. I love stopping in just to see what new items they have and going to their Friday tastings. Don't hesitate to check it out. I had an absolutely wonderful experience here. Lots of Oklahomans will go to this store to grab stuff you can't get in Oklahoma. I went by in the middle of a Friday on my way through town. The store is easy to find, clean, and low pressure, all of which make for an easy shopping experience. The owner SAm struck up a conversation with me. Talk about A+ service! The backstory; I'm in town from Austin visiting family and, being a craft beer geek, send a Tweet out about DFW local beers and where to get em. After a few replies from the DFW beer geek folks, get in touch with the fine folks at Lone Star. They say "come on down, we got ya covered." So, I head on over on my way out of town and get exactly what I was looking for. As I'm leaving, Sam the owner shows up and helps me load the truck! Very nice selection of local, Texas, and nationwide craft beer plus all the usual imports, Neo-Craft(TM) beers, and domestic canned water.
